  • 1. Very Good Experience

    by: devonlucille

My husband and I adopted our dog, Audrey, from PAL in April and the experience was just fine. We were taken to a meeting room, where a staff member brought in Audrey to meet with us and our other dog, Willie, that we had brought along. We stayed and played with her for about an hour, or so. By the end of the hour we were filling out all of the adoption paper work and we left with Audrey that day. PAL also put a microchip in Willie, free of charge! I think that a few of the things that helped expedite the process were that we had been in contact with PAL online and over the phone, previous to going in person to the shelter. Also, we had all vet records for Willie, as well as our deceased dog, Dolly, with us when we went to the shelter. In short, we had a great experience at PAL and Audrey has made a wonderful addition to our family.

    Pros

Nice staff, nice space, animals well cared for.

    Cons

A little out of the way to get to.

  • 2. worst experience ever

    by: lalapeepers

Barb "the DIRECTOR" as she will yell to you several times before you get a word in has no social skills and would rather a dog sit in a cage for 3 more days than let someone adopt it that is going to love it. She claims her volunteers give out the wrong information and yells at you for it. She would be better off working at a womans prison!

    Pros

    nice selection of animals

    Cons

BARB THE DIRECTOR HAS NO SOCIAL SKILLS

  • 3. New Shelter

    by: helpingthehomeless

We have recently completed our brand new dog shelter here at the Pet Adoption League in Yukon, PA. and are currently working on completely our new cat shelter. We guarantee our shelter is like nothing you have seen before. It is a shelter that does not look like an animal shelter---totally unique in this area. Please come and visit us and see for yourself! Call us at 724-722-3670 for hours and directions.

  • 4. Complaint Pet Adoption League

    by: poodlepaula

My experience with the person who is the director of this establishment who calls herself "Barb" treated me in a way that turned me off from ever wanting to deal with her again. I've searched online and have discovered some very distasteful truths regarding the conduct of this person. Somehow, I'd rather not deal with such an individual.

    Pros

    none per my experience

    Cons

    Director/Manager

  • 7. Charlie

    by: eme10

This shelter was great! We had visited many others, and we were not thrilled with their staff, the cleaniness or the shape of the animals. We found our dog Charlie there, and fell in love with him! Since this was our first dog- Barb gave us treats and a couple of toys. He was completely up-to-date with all of his shots, which was a less expense for us. After we took Charlie home, I received an email from one of the volunteer's who raved about Charlie, she even went as far as to send me pictures of him. You could tell that this shelter and the staff really cared for the animals. We had a great experience there.

    Pros

Area that we could get to know Charlie and play for a little while

    Cons

    Knowledge about our dog's past

    by: Sqeezin

Pet Adoption League is tiny compared to some other shelters but the volunteers give so much love that the dogs and cats don't even realize they don't have their forever home. Pet Adoption League opened its doors when 8 wonderful dogs lost their master in an automobil wreck. They were all taken in and loving homes have been found for most. It is hard finding homes for traumatized dogs. But there is someone out there for everyone and WE will find that home for them and all animals at P.A.L.\r\n\r\nSusan Rae

    Pros

So much love to go around. Everyone is loved equally.

    Cons

More room is needed because Pet Adoption League opens its doors to all furry friends.

    by: lambrhondal

WHAT GREAT THINGS YOU ARE DOING ON A SHOE STRING BUDGET. I ESPECIALLY LIKE THE EMPHASIS YOU PUT UPON ADOPTING OLDER DOGS. I HAVE A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART FOR THEM. MANY TIMES THEIR OWNERS HAVE DIED, LEAVING THEM ALONE. IT IS TRULY A SOLID BONDING THAT THESE DOGS DO AND IT'S LIKE THEY KNOW THAT YOU HAVE SAVED THEM.

I've known Barb for alot of years and she is a kind, caring, and competent caregiver. She really cares about finding good homes for the cats and dogs. She does her job in reviewing adoptions to be sure the animals are going to the best homes possible. She does alot of adoption weekends and spends alot of time with this shelter. I've known people who have adopted from PAL and have never heard any complaints about the animals health.

  • 22. Saving lives!

    by: hdevine

I've heard good and bad things about this shelter. For me, it's hard to hear the "bad" things. This shelter is saving the lives of homeless pets everyday of the year. They work with almost nothing to achieve results. Thank you for the work you do and the lives you save. It does not go unnoticed at all. Good luck in this contest, you're not as far away as you say. I also would like to give kudos for educating on the benefits of adopting "senior" pets. I could not agree with your feelings on that more. I have a special place in my heart for senior cats and dogs as well.

    Pros

    saves lives

    Cons

not enough staff, volunteers and money!

  • 23. Good for being no-kill

    by: lmpickford

Good luck in the contest. As a volunteer in another no-kill shelter in the contest, I agree with your philosophy and mission as far as no-kill shelters go. Your organization sounds very compassion.

    Pros

    No-kill shelter

    Cons

    by: xxnessaxx24

I Love PAL! They are so caring and really look out for the animals! im in the process of adopting a dog that i absolutely fell in love with and the process is so easy! barb and the volunteers have alot on their shoulders, the only thing i wish would change about the shelter is that more people would be willing to volunteer! but as for the shelter itself it is very well taken care of, very clean, very warm and heated when its cold outside. WE LOVE PAL!

    Pros

One Of The Best Shelters In South Western Pa!

    Cons

    Not Enough Volunteers

    by: landautst

Pet Adoption league is a wonderful shelter! They take great care of their animals and look out for what is in the animals' best interest. It is kept clean and the animals are well taken care of. If you're looking into adopting a dog or cat and live around the Yukon area, PAL is a GREAT place to do so.

    Pros

    Cons

Can be crowded with alot of people

    by: ShermieK

We found my sister's dog Roxie here, when they were at Petsmart in Greensburg and honestly, she is one of the most briliant dogs ever. She's a sweetheart and couldn't imagine finding a better dog for my sis!

    Pros

    Cons

  • 29. This is a deserving shelter!!

    by: ShirleyVeahman

The marvelous work this shelter does should be heralded. Every dog and cat is cared for with compassion and dignity. With no time limit to an animal's stay, they are in no danger and have constant care. Bravo to you all.

    Pros

    A no-kill shelter....a wonderful thing!

    Cons

    No funding means non-stop fundraising

  • 30. Review of Yukon, Pa. Pet Adoption League Shelter

    by: dadofive

First went there a few years ago and fell in love with Rocket a Border Collie/Huskie mix. Rocket was just a pup and was very sick so we fostered him and took him to North View Animal Hospital. We could not stand to take him back so we adopted him and volenteer services when ever we can. The people there are very caring and do not just give the animals to anyone, which is a good thing. The shelter is well kept and clean it could use some additional room since Barb does not turn any animals away.

    Pros

Take great care in finding the right home for the animals not just any home.

    Cons

Too small for the amount of animals that pass thru there, needs expanding.

  • 31. dedicated volunteeres

    by: rb1717

this shelter has the best volunteers that are very good at pairing up new owners with dogs and cats that need adopted. They are match makers for shelter animals. But it is way too small. They need more space for the dog to be able to run and work out their frustrations.

    Pros

    great volunteeres

    Cons

    small

  • 32. Well Done!

    by: suenfelix

My experience with The Pet Adoption League was very positive. I met with Barb, the owner who seems passionate about her calling. She was very clear in emphasizing what life would be like with "an active breed". She wasn't simply unloading her dogs. Most weekends they take a group of dogs/cats to a local pet store for a wider audience. It seems like a very selfless, time consuming job. Thank goodness there are people with hearts large enough to get this important job done.\r\nThank you.

    Pros

    Their passion for helping animals.

    Cons

    Small, in need of repair

  • 33. Please dont pimp puppies for Christmas

    by: works4theanimals

I'm sorry, but after seeing your picture and the caption "who wouldnt love a puppy for Christmas" I had to say something. \r\n\r\nPerhaps you are not aware of what a terrible gift idea a puppy is. Perhaps you dont know that shelters are overwhelmed with "Christmas puppies" a few weeks to months after these "gifts" lose their cuteness. \r\n\r\nYour own shelter statement talks about the importance of adopting an older dog, yet I see you pushing these puppies for Christmas. I really wish people wouldnt do this, and as a shelter you should be more aware of the potential for problems when people adopt animals to give as a "gift".\r\n\r\nThank you.

    Pros

    Hard working

    Cons

    Contradict themselves

  • 34. PAL

    by: i4swim

I am adopting my first dog from PAL, and they have made the process so easy for me. Robin has been kind enough to answer my endless questions and hasn't put any pressure on me to pick one dog over another. The dedication that everyone I've met shows is awesome. I especially like that they don't try to force a dog on you- it has to be right for BOTH parties. As a dog lover and someone who has always grown up around dogs, I can't wait to bring my girl home!

    Pros

The staff, knowledge, dedication to the animals

    Cons

So far away from where I live!

  • 35. PAL in Yukon PA

    by: Sambones

PAL in Yukon PA is a non-profit no kill shelter. I started volunteering there a few weeks ago and am truly impressed. I wish we had more people coming out to the shelter to volunteer their time with the shelter animals. Barb, the owner is a true animal lover who wants nothing but the best possible home for her furry friends. She and the other volunteers give all they can to support these animals by trying to care for them and place them in loving and permanent homes. I truly enjoy spending time with the furry ones and the volunteers. How many shelter owners/managers actually have the shelter on their property and live with the task of helping the animals 24/7? Not many that I know of.....that's true dedication!

    Pros

People who truly care about the welfare of the animals

    Cons

Shelter is not big enough and needs some updating

  • 36. excellent volunteers

    by: sbraun

I been out to this shelter several times and seem them at Pet Smart, I have even volunteered several times and I can say that these people are truely dedicated to their cause. They all love these dogs and cats like they were their own.

    Pros

    very caring

    Cons

    none

  • 37. PAL Performs a Needed Service and Does It Well

    by: MicheleZ

A lot of shelters seem to "do a lot with so little resources", but this is especially true of PAL. The all-volunteer staff is highly dedicated to their cause and truly care about ALL the animals. I was really touched by PAL staff's willingness to even help rescue Katrina victims in New Orleans--despite already being overworked "at home". They make a lot of sacrifices in the interests of homeless animals, and I can't think of a more worthy shelter to receive a make-over. Good luck!

    Pros

Great selection of dogs and cats; dedicated staff

    Cons

    Run-down facility that really needs a make-over!!!

  • 38. PAL

    by: psujulz1

Barb is truly dedicated and it shows! My daughter is a volunteer at PAL, and she really respects what Barb is doing there. When we first got involved with the shelter I immediately noted how particular they are about the adoptive "parents". This shelter does not just want to get rid of their tenants, they want solid, knowledgable people to become her animals' families. PAL has a beautiful rural setting, and it needs this makeover so it can utilize the area to maximum advantage. For all the lack of building space, there is an abundance of love.

    Pros

    Caring, Happy Animals, Hard working,

    Cons

    Space

  • 39. My Love for PAL

    by: Meems29

I have been volunteering with PAL for about a year now and have just about seen it all. My love for animals is what drives me to work so hard and dedicate my time in helping these animals stay healthy and happy in our shelter. I'm only 16 and the things I can do are limited but I do what I can, with the help of many amazing volunteers along with me. I am the youngest of them all but I give up my weekends to go up to PetsMart/shelter to clean, walk, feed, water, bathe, and anything else that needs to be done, and none of this would be possible without Barb--the founder. Please join us and help us win that 1million$ makeover, which is so desperately needed! We are not funded by the state in anyway and all of our money comes from the kind people in the public that donate money to us and for that I must thank you. I am in a club at my school called Paws 4 a Cause and we have raised a lot of money for the shelter's heating bill over the winter months!! We are a great shelter with many hardworking volunteers but we need more of you to join us in this! I am DETERMINED to win this!\r\n\r\nThank you!!

    Pros

The wonderful staff of all volunteers, the great dogs and cats etc..

    Cons

We know our shelter needs improvments but we can only do so much

  • 40. GREAT JOB!

    by: RHO123

THIS SHELTER DOES A TREMENDOUS JOB TRYING TO FIND HOMES FOR THE ANIMALS. THEY ARE A NO KILL SHELTER. THEY HAVE A FUND RAISER EVERY YEAR THAT I DONATE TO BECAUSE I KNOW IT'S FOR A GREAT CAUSE. I SEE THEM AT PET SMART ON SATURDAYS AND THE ONLY THING I WOULD ALSO SUGGEST IS POSSIBLY HAVING 2 FUND RAISERS A YEAR. PEOPLE LOVE ANIMALS AND CAN'T ALWAYS VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME BUT EVEN AROUND CHRISTMAS TIME MAYBE MAKE THE PHONE CALLS YOU NORMALLY DO IN THE SPRING OR HOW ABOUT PUTTING UP A CHRISTMAS TREE AT PET SMART FOR DONATIONS (IF ALLOWED). JUST A SUGGESTION BECAUSE I WOULD CONTRIBUTE.

    Pros

    HELP A LOT OF ANIMALS

    Cons

    NO CONS
