  • 1. Not a nice place

    by: photosteve

We went there for the first time about 6 years ago, looking to adopt a cat. The employees there were just downright rude, not what you would expect. They gave me such an attitude when I even asked if I could hold one of the cats, to the point where I wondered how they even adopted any out. The staff I dealt with were not very knowledgeable about any of the animals history, and were unwilling to try and find anyone who was. The fees were also considerably higher than the Erie County SPCA, and did not include anywhere near as much. We have since adopted 3 cats from the Erie County SPCA, and were so impressed with their professional attitudes and obvious concern for their animal "guests" we have now been volunteering with them for almost a year.

    Pros

    Was clost to home

    Cons

Not like other SPCA's I've been to

i found 2 kittens in my lawn in october.. they couldnt even walk a few steps w out fallin over thats how young they were... so i took them in and raised them to 6 months old... now on the other hand i have 2 adult cats as well.. after a while it got a little hard to keep up on 4 of them so we decided to try to set the two six month old kittens up for adoption at the spca on lockport road.... they said they would take them and make sure they were healthy first and then set them up.. i know these 2 guys are healthy... so anyways.... i was reading some reviews on here and i also over heard a few things on how i should go back asap to get the cats back because they say they will put them down just to do so because they are over loaded w animals... so i called the next day to see if they were ok and the lady said no they will be put down today because one of them is vomiting... im like WHAT its prob vomiting because it is scared!!!!! i went right away and picked them up... now the one cat has been vomiting for HOURS non stop... i wonder what the hell they did to my cats for them to be this upset!!!! i will NEVERRRRR take another animal to this spca again!!!

    by: n2rrr

We were looking for a dog last year. We looked through the internet at various shelters. There were a couple of dogs we wanted to look at. The Shelter has short hours. Not convient to working parents. We had to take time off of work to look at one dog we thought we would like, no go the dog was adopted three days befor we got there, they don't update their web page very fast. The staff wasn't real friendly and we did find one we wanted and was ready to adopt. The only problem I didn't have cash, only had a credit card. Told them I would like to go to the store to get get some money and would be right back. It was close to closing time and they made no offer to wait, I wanted to leave something valuable to show my interest, no way! That was the last straw, we will never set foot in there again.

    Pros

    Nothing really comes to mind..

    Cons

    Cash Only

  • 4. Unsuccessful Attempt at Adopting

    by: pistonbp

I was very unhappy when we tried to adopt a dog here. While they have an outdoor "play area" to get to know your new friend, it was very muddy. The animals don't seem to be cared for very well - they were even shut down for a while because of it. The staff were miserable, when they even bothered to acknowledge us. For the adoption fee, I found another shelter with a lot less hassle and we love our Buddy!!!

    Pros

    nothing

    Cons

not clean, animals not cared for

  • 5. Not impressed with this shelter

    by: carcrazy14150

This shelter is dirty, the staff ignore visitors and the animals. They've been shut down for health problems. The animals do not appear to be well cared for. I would not bring an animal here.

    Pros

    nothing, absolutely nothing

    Cons

    everything, absolutely everything

  • 6. Close to my home

    by: catsfancynancy

I had a problem feral stray who I could not discourage from staying by my house. He was very unhealthy and I was afraid for the safety of my cats. I was able to catch him and took him to the Niagara County SPCA, and they did take him to put him to sleep because there was nothing you could do for him because he was so feral. I can't remember if they asked for a donation, but I did give them $20.00 because it was certainly worth it to me to have him taken care of in a humane manner. Also, we did adopt a cat from this SPCA and I was surprized that she had not been tested for feline leukemia. I had to keep her isolated from my other cats until she could be tested.

    Pros

they did take in an extremely feral stray

    Cons

adopted cat was not tested for Feline Leukemia

  • 7. No way!!

    by: pammyj3

Ok, it was alittle more than a year ago, my family came in contact with a stray male mix breed dog. It roamed around the neighborhood for about a week, eating where it could. I asked everyone if they knew who the animal belonged to. Everyone was clueless, so I scooped him up and took him to the NC SPCA. I went in and explained tht he was a stray and his fur was a matted mess and he looks to be mal-nourished. I started to fill out the paper work and the lady told me that he would be put down immediatly. Then she proceeded to ask me if I wanted to watch!! I was horrified. I tore up the paper work and in between tears I told them that this was the most heartless facility I had ever been to. \r\n\r\nI took that poor mutt to the Erie County SPCA and told them what just happened at the NC SPCA and the guy said they get alot of that. They took the dog in and evaluated him and asked me if I wanted to be notified of his progress and of course I said yes. About a month and a half later they called to tell me he was adopted. \r\n\r\nNC SPCA wanted to kill him right away, without even looking at him.\r\nErie County SPCA, saved his life!! My vote goes to ERIE COUNTY SPCA...

    Pros

    Volunteers are very nice

    Cons

    Where do I start?

  • 9. My mom's cats

    by: mikaylasmom

My mom had gotten 2 kittens from the Niagara County SPCA. They are the most awesome cats ever. They follow you around like puppies and they will just sit on your lap to be pet. I am allergic so I can not have a cat at my house but I would definately go there to choose one if I could!

    Pros

    Nice selection

    Cons

Alot of cats that don't get adpoted

  • 10. Clean but cold feeling

    by: juls61

When I went looking for a dog I went to this spca. I realize that they are not as big or don't have the funding erie county does but the environment was a kind of cold feeling. When I wanted to interact with one of the dogs the employee looked as if she wished to be somewhere else. The only place I could interact with the dog was in a hallway. The good thing about them is they are in the business of helping animals I just wish that the atmosphere was friendlier.

    Pros

    They keep place clean

    Cons

    Not a friendly environment

  • 11. Needs help

  • 15. Adopted Loving Pets

    by: lorbal

I have adopted 3 animals to date from Niag. County SPCA and have had great success with each one. \r\n\r\nOne drawback I had encountered from this facility was the inability to accept stray cats on two occassions when I phoned them. EC SPCA accepted them without hesitation. \r\n\r\nWhile I feel the Erie County SPCA is a much more pleasant environment for animals, NC SPCA does not have the funding they have. \r\n\r\nI have to support the NC SPCA and hope that if they win the $1,000,000 they would put it to good use and expand their facility. All the pets I adopted from this facility have been healthy, loving animals; therefore, my support is with them. All animals need a chance.\r\n

    Pros

Pets adopted healthy/efficient with adoption process

    Cons

some unfriendly staff; dogs kennels small

  • 16. OKAY for a small shelter

    by: Kaygo

Niagara SPCA is small and cannot provide as many services etc. as the nearby Erie County SPCA. For that reason many people feel it is substandard. I have found, however, that the Niagara SPCA does an outstanding job in caring for its charges as well as being active in the Niagara County area. I have surrendered two animals to the shelter. One was a gosling that had been orphaned after its mother was killed in an accident. They put the gosling into their farm area. The other was a stray cat who did not get along with our cats. He was quickly adopted after some socialization. I am proud that our small facility continues with quality work under some difficult situations.

    Pros

    website and newsletter

    Cons

    Not very pro active

  • 17. Niagara Country SPCA, Not So Great

    by: Nick17

I am highly unimpressed by this SPCA. Though I understand they do not get an funding from the county, it usually smells, and whenever you walk into the dog area they all bark at get all excited so you cant get a serious look at any of them. Also once I brought in two stray pups I found that they declared to young for adoption, and I came back a few days later to check on them and not only would they not let me play with them, they wouldn't let me see them. Next time I find a stray I will do it a favor and drive it out to the Erie country SPCA

    Pros

    Close to my house

    Cons

    Alot

  • 19. Rainbow Shelter?

    by: BreakfastClubber

I didn't even know there was a Niagara County SPCA, someone told me that they list themselves under "Rainbow Shelter" in the phone book, like anyone would know where to find that! I found a cat and called them (once I was able to figure out their number!) and they made it seem like I had to pay to bring in a cat. I was just trying to do the right thing, trying to save a cat from being hit by a car! I ended up going to the SPCA in Tonawanda and they said that they get a lot of cats & dogs from Niagara County for the same reason. So when I move and am allowed to have a cat, it'll come from the Tonawanda SPCA.

    Pros

    none

    Cons

can't find their phone number to save my life

    by: Willow

Everytime I come into the facility, I am greeted warmly. It is inspiring to see them take in and adopt out so many animals in any given time period. They are truely dedicated as individuals and as an organization. If I have any questions, they are answered honestly and timely. I highly recommend adopting a shelter animal, they make excellent and rewarding companions.

    Compassionate staff

  • 22. Cost savings through euthanizia

    by: Middlecat

I have adopted animals from here. I have volunteered here.\r\nThis shelter has a great layout, it is clean, most of the staff have worked 15+ years at this shelter and dedicated and care about animals. There is no vet tech on staff.\r\n\r\nThe leadership at this facility however are a different darker animal.\r\nWorking with a veterinarian technician from Lockport: “Cost savings through euthanasia is their motto.”\r\nAdult male cats are almost immediately euthanized. Young Kittens too.\r\nCats over 7 years old never make for adoption.\r\nDogs that bark, get the needle. Dogs that wish to run get the needle. Old dogs are certain to be put down within hours of surrender.\r\nAnimals that are rescued or surrendered sick are certain to be put down. NO effort is made to aide the animals. Only maintain.\r\nThey are “crowded with animals” but you will notice that more than half the cages are always empty.\r\nThe only shelter in the area with a fully operational crematorium for disposal.\r\nDont take my word for any of this, find out for your self. \r\n

    Pros

    Loving caring staff

    Cons

Old school administration unwilling to change

  • 23. Very compassionate

    by: catlady14092

I recently brought in a stray cat that had been injured in a cat fight. A staff member cleaned up the animal and made sure I was capable of caring for him at home. The compassion toward this single cat is indicative of how they care for each and every animal that comes through it's doors.

    Pros

    Very helpful and caring people

    Cons

They don't receive enough community support

  • 24. A wonderful SPCA!

    by: melissa03

I have always loved this SPCA. My family and I have always adopted our cats from here. The staff is great and the website is very informative. I especially like the constant updates on adoptable pets. I highly recommend this SPCA to adopt a pet from!

    Pros

Wonderful website that is always being updated.

    Cons

I wish adoptions had an evening time once in awhile.
