    by: SabrinaNoel

They treat their animals so well and are good at promoting and finding homes for their animals, they are a non-kill shelter. :)

    Pros

They treat their animals so well, and they are a non-kill shelter

    Cons

They don't always have room for homeless animals

  • 2. NFAW Christmas Craft Fair

    by: daboc24

I have been going for years and it is my favorite Christmas Fair by far and it is a great bonus that all the money goes to the animals. It is such a good selection and fair pricing that people should go even if it is a long drive!

    Pros

Absolutely great fair and great prices

    Cons

    Only once a year

  • 3. I love this shelter and what they do!

    by: 14nyr92

They have a christmas sale every year to raise money for animals with donated items, I have always gone and bought most of my presents there. I donate when i can and can't wait to be 16 years old so i can hands on help.

    Pros

Accepts all animals and cares deeply for all of them.

    Cons

I wish they could afford more space.

  • 4. Great Staff!

    by: BarbieMable

My toddler, for his 2nd b'day, "decided" he would not accept gifts for his b'day party. Rather, he asked all guests to provide a pet/dog donation--whether food, litter, toys, etc. In Sept 08, he pulled out the big garbage bag chocked-full of goodies and dragged it up the front steps--what a day!

    Pros

    Friendly and caring

    Cons

    none known!

  • 5. New Farifield / Sherman shelter

    by: aeaaea

In my dealings with the New Fairfield / Sherman I found them to be most caring for the dogs and cats that come their way . The staff is very knowledgeable and is most concerned about insuring the adoption is a proper fit for both the pet and the new family - which may include other pets ... Of course often the other pets are invited to the shelter to again help make sure their is a good match . I volunteer and work with the dogs .. the dogs are given opportunities to exercise and equally important to socialize with other the dogs ( sometimes cats) and of course with people ... When a dog is adopted there is a follow up with the new family to make sure all is going well .. support to the dogs and to the families is a priority . The dogs are well cared for - veterinarian visits are routine - one dog needed knee surgery and she received it .. She was later adopted and the family could not be any happier with her .

    Pros

    The staff is quite knowledgaeble

    Cons

    Small footprint

  • 6. great shelter

  • 7. it's addicting!

    by: kcook13

today was my second day volunteering at the shelter. i researched before i joined here and i am so happy this is the one i picked. you might think i am biased because i volunteer here but it is really an amazing place. the dogs are so unbelievably sweet and just want to be loved. the staff and volunteers all care for them so much. the hardest thing is going home and not being able to take all the dogs with me. due to my crazy schedule i can only volunteer once a week, but i can't wait for that day each week to come! there is no greater feeling than being surrounded by people who truely care about animals and want to do all they can to make sure they go to good homes!

    Pros

such a great organization to be part of

    Cons

i have to go home and leave the dogs

We adopted Jenga from The New Fairfield Sherman Animal Shelter when she was 4 months old. Now she is about to turn one and she is the love of our life. NFSAS saved her, life by bringing her from a kill shelter in Tennesse, and in return she has made our life better.

  • 9. Wonderful place

    by: bairdbetter

One day our dog "found" a kitten near our house twice in one day. We realized it must be a stray. The New Fairfield Sherman Animal Welfare Society accepted the kitten with open arms. They talked with me several times on the phone before and after we left the kitten with them. They were patient and caring and honest. I felt torn and sad because our family wanted to keep this beautiful, sweet kitten but couldn't because of a family member's allergies to cats and asthma. They were very understanding and made it as easy as possible. They worked tirelessly to find the kitten a home. I am so grateful to have such a wonderful place who take such loving care of animals.

    Pros

Friendly, knowledgeable, caring, accepting, involved in the community

    by: katieferg

I could not be happier with my experience here. I saw a pup on petfinder and thought for sure he would be gone by the time I spoke to someone. I loved the thorough application process, but was also extremely nervous that I would be passed on because I am young or some other reason. We had to wait a whole week to take the trip down becaues it is over two hours away. I am so glad that the staff could see something in us that allowed us to get our puppy. He is such a huge part of our family and has renewed our senior dog. We all love Dublin, even if Chyna doesn't like to admit it sometimes. If we were closer to the shelter, they would have a hard time keeping us from dropping in all the time! I would absolutely recommend (and do!) getting a pet here, they are a joy to deal with and I am glad we keep in touch to this day.

    Pros

    friendly staff, nice shelter

    Cons

i wish it was closer to us!!

  • 13. Wonderful place.

    by: joeyshuman

I had a wonderful experience with the New Fairfield Sherman Animal Welfare Society. I live in the Mystic area (2 plus hours away), I saw a picture of Joey on petfinders.com, called the shelter right away. I knew immediately that Joey was my dog and I had to go get him. The staff was very helpful over the phone and promised to hold him for pick up in 2 days, I would have camped out in the parking lot if I had to in order to get Joey, but I was assured that he would be waiting for me. When we arrived at the shelter I couldn't wait to meet my boy, a few minutes later there he was! Love at first sight. Joey and I got aquainted, with help from the staff (Joey was quite timid). I asked lots of questions about Joey and the staff was very helpful in sharing all they knew of his origin, health, and temperment. I must have sat on the floor in the shelter for over an hour. I cannot express the appreciation, respect, and love I feel for the staff at the New Fairfield Sherman Animal Welfare Society. Without people like them I would not have found "My Boy", my best friend, my constant companion, my joy, my pick me up, my fetch partner, my hicking companion, my new smiles and laughter, my own personal comedian, and the love of my life. Thank you all so much for what you do, and for how you do it. Respectfully, Kathy (Joeyshuman)

    Pros

Awesome staff; helpful, caring, devoted, and kind.

    Cons

    None.

  • 14. What a great experience... and a wonderful dog!!!!

    by: ToddRitter5

We had visited a few shelters before coming to New Fairfield. It was an experience, none as clean and welcoming. We ahd seen a picture of Aurora... now Haley.. and we went to check her out.. we quickly fell in love with her and put in our application. Two days later my son and I went to pick her up and bring her home. She was incredibly shy .. afraid of noises, movements.. to the point where she trembled... but after lots of one on one time her personality began to emerge.. her fear of 'things' has really gotten better... she has since adjusted fully to her new home... and she is by far an outstanding dog. Working with the shelter was nothing short of wonderful. They wanted to make sure the dog was a good fit.. and my wife and I wanted to make sure that the dog would blend in with us and our 7 year old son. We couldn't have found a nicer dog anywhere!!!

    Pros

    Best shelter around!

    Cons

None - by far superior to the other shelters I visited

  • 15. great small shelter!

    by: amgfnyc

Well, I guess I'm a bit biased because I'm the co-Director of the shelter, but NFSAW really is great! We place our animals after a very thorough screening process, so the vast majority of the time the placements are FOREVER. We have a lovely facility in a convenient location. It is kept neat and tidy by our 4-person staff, all of whom are a pleasure to deal with. Stop by and adopt a pet!

    Pros

    very thorough adoption process

    Cons

    none!

  • 17. My cat Pat was adopted here

    by: JennNicoletti

I adopted my cat Pat from New Fairfield/Sherman Animal Welfare in 2002. I also volunteered there in 2002. It's a great place and they really care about the animals.\r\n\r\nPat is a special needs cat. I knew this when I adopted her but I wanted her anyway. She couldn't see very well at all and in fact, we thought she was completely blind. As it turns out, she suffered some sort of trauma and had some neurological damage. That is causing the left side of her body to be less sensitive to feel. As well as causing blindness in her left eye and some hearing loss in the left ear. Her right side is fine as far as the doctors can tell. She also experiences seizures as a result of the trauma. Lastly, Pat also has chronic kidney failure which popped up about year ago. She is six now. Needless to say, Pat has become a regular at the vet. She has had her ups in downs in terms of health issues but she has always remained the feisty little cat she is.\r\n\r\nPat doesn't know she's special. As a matter of fact, she thinks she's the boss of the house! As far as she is concerned she has all her senses. Oh she does bump into a wall or two from time to time but she shakes it off and continues on her way. I am so grateful for having Pat in my life. She has taught me to persevere in the face of insurmountable odds.\r\n\r\nI am glad I got the chance to volunteer at New Fairfield Animal Welfare society. The took good care of Pat before I adopted her. They really care about their animals.

  • 21. I love NFSAWS

    by: Rew

Having a close friend work at the New Fairfield shelter, I know a lot about just how much the employees care about their animals. Not only do they keep the shelter looking great, they also occasionally invite them into their own homes. One dog in particular received weeks of attention to try and work him through his aggression issues. These people go above and beyond the call of duty, and deserve to be supported for the work they do.

    Pros

    What's not to love?

    Cons

    None!

  • 22. I love volunteering at NFSAW

    by: rouxg

I have volunteered at NFSAW for over 5 years in the cat room. It is a great shelter where the staff and volunteers are deeply committed to finding the right home for each pet, providing great care for them during their stay, and interacting and socializing with each animal to help prepare them for life in a new home.\r\n\r\nWorking in the cat room is a rewarding experience, especially when I can reach out to a shy kitty and encourage them to come out of their shell or provide a warm, quiet lap for an older cat who just wants companionship and a reason to purr again.\r\n\r\nThank you NFSAW for a great experience, and I encourage all to give volunteering a try.

    Pros

Animal welfare is the highest priority, caring staff & volunteers, clean & efficient

    Cons

Parts of the building are getting tired

  • 23. Our Beautiful Shelter

    by: barbaramedina

I have been affliated with the New Fairfield/Sherman Animal Welfare Shelter for several years and have adopted cats and dogs from this compassionate sanctuary. All animal welfare shelters should strive to make these homeless creatures feel they are safe; The NFSAW Shelter strives and succeeds in doing that by keeping a clean, warm, loving environment for its' inhabitants. The Shelter Manager is kind and caring and so are the dedicated volunteers.

  • 24. New Fairfield Sherman Animal Shelter.

    by: debbyrich

The NFSAW Shelter is the best in Connecticut. The shelter Manager and staff go beyond what is required of them. They loved the animal like they are their own. They make sure every dog and cat at the shelter go to loving homes. The dedication is to be admired. They rescue so many dogs and cats. It is a small shelter but with a big heart.

    Pros

    They love all animals

    by: Decibella

I love that the people at NFSAWS work so hard at keeping the place clean and pleasant, and take such pride in finding loving, responsible and well matched homes for the shelter pets.\r\nWe adopted our cats from NFSAWS, after a careful adoption process. They are the joy of our lives.

    Pros

    Honest caring

    Cons

    The building needs an addition

  • 26. This is how shelters should be

    by: FNM

My typical experience of shelters is walking around and viewing the animals in cages open to the general public. This shelter takes a fresh and professional approach. Rather than the latter, they understand your requirements by a series of questions and match an animal to your profile. Some may be put off by this but it helped us understand what we really wanted from a pet and subsequently we found our perfect match.\r\n\r\nStaff - excellent, friendly, knowledgeable and by being so we hope to regular visit and support them all the way as they deserve. \r\n\r\nKeep up the good work!

    Pros

Very professional, great service, great adoption fee

    Cons

All the fury friends that are still there

  • 27. a wonerful experience

    by: Bambarini

My husband and I were first time dog owners and the shelter answered all our questions, knew a great deal about the history of our dog, and all loved him so much. They allowed us to take the dog outside in the yard which really helped us to get to know the dog better. After many visits, and much debating, I am so glad we have him! We still keep in touch with workers at the shelter, they are always so welcoming and caring. If we look for another pet, we will definitely come back to this shelter!

    Pros

very friendly staff and really cares about the animals

    Cons

needs more space for more animals!

  • 28. Thank you

  • 32. My time with the NfSAWS....

    by: DEREKDEMANE

I've worked at the NFSAWS for almost 5 years now and I can honestly say it has been the best job that I have ever had. For such a small place it has helped so many pets that have either been neglected, abused or unwanted find their "Forever Home". Every one that works there, works there because of their desire to help and make a difference in the animlas lives. The staff and volunteers work very hard to not only keep the place looking sharp for potential adopters but more importantly to give each animal their daily dose of TLC. I would recommend this shelter to anyone looking for their perfect pet.

    Pros

The workers and volunteers truly care about the animals...

    Cons

The cats and dogs know when its feeding time even if you don't. =)

We foster cats for them now and help with socialization. It is wonderful knowing people like the staff at the New Fairfield Sherman Animal Welfare Society are working to better animals' lives.

  • 34. Two Fantastic Dogs

    by: elle423

We adopted two dogs from the shelter...The first, D.O.Gee ("Diogi") a black lab/rottweiller cross in Dec. 1996. D.O.Gee was 1 when we adopted him, and for the next 12 years he was loved so much by everyone! Sadly last month at the ripe old age of 13 it was time for him to say goodbye to all of us. We miss him tremendously BUT...his brother Hennessy (formerly "Duke") and sister Casey are doing their best to keep everyone's spirits up. We adopted Hennessy in October 2007. He's a 3 (or 4?) year old Treeing Walker Coonhound who found his way to New Fairfield via a rescue group in Tennessee. He's lots of fun and just an all-around great dog :)

    Pros

    Great Staff

    Cons

    None

  • 35. helpful and honest!!

    by: arizona860

this shelter may be small in size and quantity, but it has an amazing amount of needy pets that are rehomed every year into forever homes. They are very careful to listen to the needs of the adopters and help them to choose a pet that is right for their lifestyle and family. All animals are cared for and given excellent veterinary care prior to adoption. cost is never a consideration when it comes to giving proper care to the animals that pass through the doors! definately worth calling them when you are looking for a new furry friend!

    knowledge of pets for adoption

    by: LJ828

I have had the pleasure of adopting two dogs from this shelter and have two perfect experiences!!!\r\nMy first dog Stella had spent a lot of time at the shelter before she came home with me and it was extremely heartwarming when members of the shelter were going out of their way the day of her adoption to get a chance to say good bye to a dog they had grown to love and care for. They were thrilled to see that she found a forever home but you could actually see how much they cared for her.\r\nBoth of my adoption experiences were caring experiences and came home with dogs that were perfect fits into my home and lifestyle.
