  • 1. They are very inhuman

    by: apierluissi2000

In December 2009 our family had to go through a happy and disastrous event at the same time. We received our third child, but, our beloved puppy had to go to the shelter. After I got pregnant we had 9 months trying to figure out how to keep our german shepherd dog. Astry arrived home when she was a baby during the summer of 2008. We took her to vet checks and to training. Our two daughters loved her. She played with both of them all the time without any problem. She was very gentle and carrying. However in 2009 I unexpectedly got pregnant. We wanted to stay with her; however, we didn’t want to sacrifice her health, food, and commodities. Therefore, we thought she would do better with a family that will also love her and take care of all of her needs. After some research, we learned that shelters interviewed families before giving them any pets. That they will visit the families to ensure the dogs were safe and happy. Thus, we decided that because we wanted the best for her we had to take her to the shelter. When my husband took her there they told him: “Don’t worry she is going to be fine”. Nevertheless, we never stop thinking about her. We loved her then and now more than ever. Thinking about her I asked my husband to call the shelter, I couldn’t stand not knowing how she was and I still can’t believe what we found out. After a few minutes on the phone they told my husband they put Astry to sleep. Why? Because after a MONTH there she bit one of the guys and they had to do that. To me that does not make any sense. Astry was about 18 months; she was in a new place, scared, and still young. What they did to her that she felt she needed to defend herself? My daughters (at that time 3 and 5) played with her without a problem at all. If she misbehaved we would tell her that we disapproved her behavior and Astry would put her ears back and her tail between her legs and she would give you the look of “forgive me I’m still a puppy”. She was all black; she had her AKC papers and also the training papers. They didn’t give us a call. How hard could it be? “Hey you remember the black german shepherd you brought; well she bit someone and we are about to KILL her. Is there anything you can do? And, believe me we would pick her right back to us. We loved her. We though she was going to be in a better place. We didn’t want to risk her freedom or her wellness because our status changed. She was the best dog nobody ever had.

    Pros

    None

    Cons

They don’t know anything about dogs.

  • 2. A shelter with heart

    by: midnitestarz18

They are very caring and concerned with where pets may be headed once they arrive at the shelter. They don't turn away pets, they've even made accommodations for animals such as ducks before. The only problem is the amount of space they have there, though they will find a way to keep an animal there if needed, they need more space. They are very caring about animals there.

    Pros

    friendly, knowledgeable, clean

    Cons

    space

  • 3. Caring Shelter

    by: penguinkitty

It is definitely not their fault that they have not enough room, they have a high rate of animals going in, and they have not enough going out to make it comfortable, but it is plain to see that they do everything possible in their power to make the animals comfortable and happy. They encourage people to come in and volunteer, and its great to see older people come in and help both the animals and themselves by going into the cat room and playing with the cats and giving them the love they need, or going on walks in the mini trail they have behind the shelter. They did everything to make my mice that I could not care for for a few months comfy and loved, and when one got sick enough that he had to be put down for his own safety, not just the volunteers or anybody else's, they told us well in advance and kept us updated every day or so, and really made everything run as smooth as a situation like that could go.

    Pros

    Very Caring, Knowledgeable,

    Not enough space

    by: Fooseberry

I have adopted a cat and a dog from there and the people that work there are always friendly and know all about the needs of a pet. I like that they care more about the animals than the people. They won't sacrafice the quality of a home for the pet just to find it a home.

    Pros

The staff is very knowledgeable and truely caring for the animals

    Cons

Wish they were open more hours.

The Cape Cod Shelter is an important part of the community: providing shelter for animals in need, support for people with pets and a place to go when you're looking to add a furry friend to your family. They do great work and deserve any support we can give them!

  • 13. A Wonderful Shelter!

    by: Koda79

This shelter is a wonderful place to adopt a new pet from. The staff is friendly, knowledgable, and the animals are very well cared for and loved. It is a very organized shelter as well. My experience with volunteering here has been rewarding, and I'm very glad I found such a great place. I have walked dogs, played with cats, and cared for bunnies, as well as help with the special events. I love seeing the animals go to great homes. I adopted my pet rabbit, Lyla, from this shelter a few years ago, and it was a great experience. I higly recommend this shlter; it's a wonderful place for homeless animals to dwell until they find loving homes.

    Pros

Great staff, clean, great dog park

    Cons

    Can't really think of any!

  • 14. A Special Place

    by: Tam30

Volunteering at the shelter has been a rewarding experience for me. People ask how can you not take every dog home with you. I tell them that most of the time the dogs seem happy and healthy. The staff are watchful for problems and the care of the animal's health is remarkable and quick. this shelter does need some help and more room. anyone reading this should help add more points to this shelters cause. thanks

    Pros

A nurturing environment for all the animals there

    Cons

Wish the space was bigger and more up to date
