    by: lizzyb2

I almost adopted a kitty from this shelter. The staff that dealt with my multiple visits were very patient. It turned out this wasn't the right time for us to adopt an additional kitty, but I will certainly visit the LYnchburg Human Society when the time comes for us to add to our feline household.

    Pros

    Good location, nice staff

    Cons

    None

I like to stop by to shop for cute t-shirts and fun toys for our dogs and cats. The offer fun "parties" as fundraisers. Our dogs enjoyed last years halloween party and the various vendors offering pet related items.

    Pros

Nice promotional shirts and other products

    Cons

I adopted a kitten from the Lynchburg Humane Society in the summer of 2005. The facility was exceptionally clean, and the staff were friendly...but I was horrified to see a huge whiteboard over the door listing out the numbers of animals they had euthanized in the past month. I know it sends a message about how important it is to spay/neuter and that there is no way for them to save all of the animals brought to the shelter each year...but it was still made me very uncomfortable.\n\nOtherwise, the experience was good and my kitten grew into a beautiful, healthy cat.

    Pros

    Cleanliness, size of facilities

    Cons

    Whiteboard over the door

This a very friendly shelter but the staff does not seem very knowledgeable in regards to breeds. Not very dog is a pit or rottweiler mix.

    Pros

    cleanliness, adoption fees

    Cons

euthanization and not very breed knowledgeable

    by: ajrfman

During the summer of 2007 someone dropped off five cats at our house. One was a friendly young male and the others were a mother and four kittens. The mother was still nursing the kittens. All of the cats were skinny. We purchased food for the cats and fed them until we could tame them enough to put in a cage to take to the Humane Society. It took several months. Two of the kittens disappeared. Finally, on January 18 we were able to put the threeremaining cats in a cage. All three would let us pet them. \r\n After hearing that the Amherst County Humane Society was overun with cats, we thought that the three cats would have a much better chance at the Lynchburg Humane Society. I have a very limited income from Social Security Disability, and I was only able to make a contribution of $50 that day. The Lynchburg Humane Society told me that they did not have a deadline on euthanizing pets, and that they were much larger than Amherst County Humane Society.\r\n On February 28 I emailed the Lynchburg Humane Society and asked about the cats. I received an email reply that the mail cat had an upper respiratory infection and was not currently adoptable. I asked about the other two cats, the mother and the kitten. I received a reply that I did not understand. \r\n On March 3, 2008 I called them and asked about the cats. The male cat had been upgraded to adoptable. I asked about the mother and kitten. I was told that they weren't very friendly and had been euthanized. I was shocked. They had not even given the mother and kitten a chance.

    Pros

    don't know any

    Cons

    Animals given little chance

  • 9. Another great shelter trying to help animals.

    by: pfisters5

The workers here do a good job of trying to place animals. We need more people like this in our area to help find great homes for the many strays. Keep up the good work.

    Pros

    Work hard to find placements

    Cons

    none

  • 10. Another local Humane Society working hard for the animals

    by: Smilingk9

I have worked with Lynchburg HS through my volunteering with HSCC. They have a great facility that is clean and well-maintained (I'm just a little jealous :-) ) They have a knowledgable staff that cares for the animals. They support our local S/N clinic and have regulations about adopting out animals only after vetting. They share cages at the Petsmart store and their cleaners do a great job of jumping in to help with HSCC cages too. They need to be a little more rescue concious in their efforts though. In the past L'burg HS has been hesitant to work out rescue options for animals in need of placement.

    Pros

    knowledgable staff, great facility

    Cons

need to be more open to rescue

  • 11. so many nice animals

    by: aprilru

They always have a lot of nice animals at this shelter. The staff is very friendly and helpful and there to answer any questions that you may have. You can tell that they are all dedicated to the animals and want to find them loving homes.

    Pros

    great animals

    Cons

    none

  • 12. Nice shelter

    by: mrsschill

This shelter is clean, with caring, helpful staff. Their cat room is a bit on the small side, and the cats don't have much room in their cages. They need a separate room so people wanting to meet a cat can have a place away from the crowd of people and other cats. Some cats get scared easily so won't show how they really are with all the other people milling around.

    Pros

    Clean

    Cons

no separate room for people to get to know a cat

  • 13. Good Shelter

    by: KathyE

Too many animals and not enough space is common for shelters, but the Lynchburg Humane Society seems to make the best of their situation. I adopted a wonderful cat from there about 8 years ago and she has been healthy and happy ever since. I do admire their spay and neuter policies, and am glad they follow up to make sure their animals don't reproduce.

    Pros

    Very helpful

    Cons

They do the best they can considering the situation

    by: BShack

LHS has provided space for my favorite trainers (Happy Tails) to hold classes. They are big promoters of the new S/N clinic in Evington, and adopt out only spayed and neutered animals. They share the cat adoption center at the Lynchburg Petsmart and do a great job placing their cats through this facility.\r\n

    Pros

Clean, and they have a nice website, too.

    Cons

Still need to think RESCUE FIRST!

  • 15. Not Rescue Friendly

    by: Trucknup

This shelter is clean and the animals appear to be well cared for. The volunteers there are great BUT they ARE NOT RESCUE FRIENDLY, hence the low rating. This comes from personal experience.

    Pros

    Clean Facility

    Cons

    Not Rescue Friendly

  • 16. Serves the community

    by: srj

They are not always the most helpful. I stopped to report a dog roaming in traffic; the person at the desk said I had to call the city Animal control dept. I didn't have a cel phone or phone book so had to wait til I got back to work to call. She didn't even offer to call for me.\r\n

    Pros

They do lots of outreach/community activities

    Cons

    Adoption rate could be better

  • 17. Helping Pets Find Homes

    by: fivspeed

Overall a good shelter. I helped a friend pick a puppy from there several years ago. That was a good experience. However, when I was looking for a cat of my own to adopt, the staff wasn't all that helpful. The lady working was sick, more than one of the cats were sick and there just wasn't a friendly helpful atmosphere. I do not mean to imply that this is not a good shelter at all though, but it could stand to be improved on a bit.

    Pros

    Helping pets find homes

    Cons

Had sick animals available for adoption. No one around to help

    by: TRS

THIS IS A VERY CLEAN SHELTER WITH LOTS OF VOLUNTEERS TO HELP. THEY WILL KEEP AN ADOPTABLE DOG FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES TO GET THEM A HOME. THE ANIMALS HAVE LARGE RUNS INSIDE AND OUT.\r\nTINA

    Pros

    VERY CLEAN AND WELL LOCATED

    Cons

Still using euthanasia because there is not enought room to hold all that comes in.
