    by: cx1286

Every time I have been to the shelter it has been a good experience... I have been several times with friends and roommates to help them pick out a new pet and we have always found more than one we wanted to keep, but were limited to taking a single animal home each time. The staff has always been knowledgeable and helpful and we have never had any problems. I noticed that the shelter is always overly full, but that is just a sad fact in the daily life of animal shelters... I always notice a number of volunteers cleaning and otherwise assisting with the care of the animals, I just wish I could take more home with me...

    Pros

The staff is always helpful and knowledgable...

    Cons

    The shelter is overly full...

  • 8. Best Animal Shelter in N.GA!

    by: HeatherAshley

My mother is the Vet Tech at the Lumpkin County Animal Shelter. She works her butt off, along with the other staff to make sure the animals are for the most part comfortable! But the shelter is just not big enough and they seem to be short handed at times. The county doesn't give them money to do anything for the shelter or the animals! They animals and the staff would love to win this competition! My family and I have taken some dogs in mostly older dogs from the shelter because the boss was wanted to put the dogs down, so we brought them home with us. Before my mother worked at the shelter we always had an open door for stray animals! Right about now we have 20 animals from ones who are hurt and need care from my mother from old rinky dinky dogs who just want to live the rest of the time they have happy & my family does that for them! We've helped out so many animals and found amazing home for them! And all of them are living happily ever after!

    Pros

    Amazing staff and Friendly!

    Cons

    Not enough money

  • 9. Need Community Support

    by: HYPERMUTT

This shelter is funded by Lumpkin County and Paws Humane Society. However, the shelter needs more community help and awareness. The shelter is always spotless and the animals all seem to be happy. Volunteers spend countless hours walking the dogs and spending time wotht he cats and puppies. Alot of these animals show up have been mistreated in some way. The patience displayed in rehabilitation and re-socialization is incredible. They do a great job here and need little help. The funds from this program can go along way.

    Pros

An Abundance of Love and Care

    Cons

    Need Community Support

  • 11. Gods gift to animals in North Georga

    by: golfvek43

I am personally involved with the shelter in Lumpkin County GA. One of my two sons came from this shelter, the little guy, Andrew Weber Cook. Nikki Weber is one of the technicians at the shelter and there is not a person I know who loves animals and takes on their causes on as her own than Nikki. Her husband Jeff, who I have the pleasure to work with and have as a friend is also a rare person who spends as much time at the shelter as he does working at our job. He does this on his own time because he loves animals. These folks donate so much time and personal money to the shelter. As usual the shelter is hit hard by county budget constraints and pressure, but they keep their head up and doing the best they can with what they get. Lumpkin County Animal Shelter deserves any help or money they win.

    Pros

    Caring loving staff

    Cons

    Not enough money

  • 12. A labor of love

    by: baileysmom

My observation is that working at an animal shelter is bittersweet. You are helping homeless pets but sometimes the outcome is not what you hope for. Paws serves the Lumpkin County/North Georgia area and attempts to place homeless pets with new owners. I don't think shelter volunteers get the credit they deserve. I suppose the wagging of a tail or purring from a cat is the biggest reward they get. More people need to be responsible and spay or neuter their pets. Emptier cages at the shelters would be a great thing! \r\nIt takes a lot of man hours and love to run a shelter so sign up for Paws and help them save animals!

    Pros

    Nikki Weber works there!

    Cons

    More homes needed.
