    by: catright

I wanted to write a fair review, but I have to tell it like it is. Bottom line is that we're a caring family of three, who had taken care of a stray cat for years, even so much as to spend thousands on vet care for a cat that we kept outdoors. After 12 years the cat passed (another $500 for a cremation), so we decided to adopt a house cat. Little Shelter decided to turn us down, with no explantion. All we can think of is that they were concerned we'd let the cat outside, which we agreed not to. They have over 400 cats there! It boggles my mind that they felt the cat we picked out was better off in their (somewhat dirty) shelter than in our loving, caring, CLEAN home. I suppose we should thank them, as we adotped a cat in Islip, who is now the love of our lives, and couldn't be happier.

    Pros

    Knowlegable staff

  • 3. A Wonderful Place!

    by: prestomets

We recently adopted our 2nd cat from Little Shelter. We also have sponsored a cat for over a year now, and frequently make food donations. I can't think of a more kind, warm-hearted staff to be taking care of our defenseless felines. Everytime we have gone there, whether to adopt or to donate, we are treated with remarkable kindness. It truly is a special bunch and the dogs & cats are lucky to have them.

    Pros

Extremely devoted staff - warm, friendly surroundings

    Cons

    by: Susan56

I've donated to the shelter over the years and they are very appreciative!! I also was a participant last May when I walked for Harley. Money was raised to help with his much needed surgerys! I met a few of the volunteers for the facility. They couldn't have been kinder and were very helpful with some much needed advice! They are there for everyone not just the huntington community!!

    Pros

Great and Compassionate with their animals

    Cons

    NONE!!!

    by: amerie384

my family adopted a dog from this selter a few years ago. They are a no kill shelter and they rescued him and nursed him back to health. The staff there was so nice and helpful. The woman Jodi, who still works there was so wonderful, with the way she helped us find the right dog for our family and the way she treated the animals. The shelter was very clean and all the animals were taken care of and give attention. Although it was such a great shelter they really need this makeover. It would be so wonderful to give back to them they way they have to the animals that go through there. If they got the make over I know that it would greatly benefit all the animals there. He was such a great dog im so glad they saved him!

    Pros

    a great place for animals

    Cons

  • 6. Education Awareness

    by: jct

Arlene, from the shelter, came to our school last year and enlightened us with their wonderful educational program on spaying and neutering your pets and why it is so important. The students were so enthralled by her stories, they became advocates. It is so valuable to have her come in and talk to your class about everything the shelter does-rescue, adoption, ASK, surgery....and how kids can help.

    Pros

    educate the community

    Cons

  • 8. Best place on long island!

    by: highfives

Little Shelter is definitely the best shelter I have found to adopt an animal from. The staff was nothing but professional from the beginning. They truly know and care about all the animals in the shelter. It is very obvious that they are making sure to find the perfect match for your family depending on what type of pet you are looking for, while also maintaining the best interests of the animal. I adopted my first dog from this shelter in 2000, and again recently in 2008 - both experiences ended up giving me such amazing companions. I could not be more thankful to this shelter for allowing me to know and love two amazing animals.

    Pros

    Professional, knowledgeable staff

    Cons

    None!

  • 9. Why Little Selter should get a makeover

    by: nanbrom

Little shelter is one of the most under-rated, well -kept secrets on Long Island. They are usually overshadowed by larger, getter advertised shelters, such as North Shore Animal League, and Bide-A-Wee. Consequently, it dosn't get the amount of support or funding that the larger places do. The people are committed to helping animals that would otherwise be destroyed in kill shelters: the elderly, chronically ill, or behaviorally challenged. the feeling here is one of "family" ; it is situated in the middle of a small residential community, in a park-like setting. They are very open to volunteers and are happy to get whatever hours people can give! I know they would like to have an animal hospital on the campus to better provide for their "guests" rather than transporting the patients around the area to emergency facilities or offices. They do a great job and deserve commendation!

    Pros

Beautiful setting, quiet, committed staff, no kill

    Cons

Small, not well known as an option, smaller community support

  • 10. Little Shelter,

    by: ObsidianC

I love this place. The animals and the people here are all wonderful, everybody I talk to is so dedicated to what they do and everyone is so grateful for any help they can get. Everytime I come to volunteer I'm thanked at least three times, but I really feel privelleged to be there. I have fallen in love with every animal I've made eye contact with. This place saves the lives of animals, it really gives them a second chance. Some of the horror stories I've heard are unbelievable, but I'm always so grateful that these animals are now safe here. It's beyond words to look at animal that you know would otherwise be dead, even more so when that animal is playfully tugging on your shoelace or nibbling on your sleeve. If you go there you'll never want to leave,

    Pros

No-kill shelter, loved animals, loving staff,

    Cons

    Nothing!

  • 11. Former Volunteer

    by: fozra

I volunteered there from '95 - '97 while in college, and miss it terribly. Work schedules have kept me from volunteering in any way I feel would be meaningful, but I do try to bring a donation up there from time to time (although not frequently enough) and hopefully touch base with anyone there that remembers me :-). Between staff and volunteers, the animals get the best care and attention a shelter can provide. Adoption procedures always keep the best interests of the animals as top priority.\nI remember during my time there, I stopped in on Christmas Day and - sure enough - staff members were there to see to the animals. It was a nice holiday.

    Pros

Friendly, caring, animals always come first.

    Cons

Can't think of any right now...

  • 12. such a great place

    by: xtiamo33x

i heard a lot of great things about this shelter. When i visited this past weekend, i was taking a look through and i thought it was great how much they really cared about the homes that the pets went to. They take a great deal of precautions in where they are sending all of their animals because they work so hard to take care of them. They do so much, and i really hope they are acknowledged for all of their hard work... \r\nsincerely, \r\nanna

    Pros

    great staff!

    Cons

    they need help...

Little Shelter is a really great shelter. I adopted Pocket from there and I volunteer there whenever I can. The volunteers and staff do all they can, but the shelter really needs more room. There are a huge amount of cats living in the shelter. It is a little crowded but all of the cats have been mostly socialized.

    Pros

Friendly staff, helpful volunteers, well cared for cats

    Cons

    need new facilities

Little Shelter is a wonderful place to adopt a pet. They have real life dog rooms for dogs who are having difficulty adjusting and a huge cattery where cats can roam around the room. If you are looking to adopt, or volunteer, I would definitely check out little shelter.

    Pros

    The dedicated and caring staff

    Cons

    The facilities need improvments

  • 18. Love abounds

    by: lexismom25

My family adopted a puppy from Little Shelter in 1/08. All references were checked, and I heard after the fact that one reference felt like it was an interrogation.\n\nThe puppy was ill (kennel cough), on meds for over a week, but they were concerned for the dog I had at home. My vet felt my dog at home would be fine, but they were hesitant to release the puppy. He was fine, as was my original dog.\n\nThe shelter workers were great, and allowed us to visit the puppy while he was ill.\n\nRecommend this shelter highly, they take the time and care about their animals and your family :)

    Pros

Very careful about who they adopt animals too

    Cons

may be too cautious about animals health

  • 19. Simply put, the best place to find a canine/feline friend

    by: TheSphinx89

I started out as a volunteer at Little Shelter in November of last year and I've worked my way to becoming an employee in the cattery. I love being there and the staff has been so nice to me. I've bonded with so many animals and I consider all of them to be my pets. All of us are willing to help anyone looking for an addition to their home or family. We do have some rules that people find to be a bit too hasty. I have to stand by them though because all of us at Little Shelter want the best homes and care for our animals. I love seeing people come to our shelter. It's funny when their mouths drop when they realize how many animals we really have. Seeing people and animals interacting together and being happy is what I love doing and I'll always find time for it in my life. Please come down and see our animals! You'll be glad you did!

    Pros

    Great staff and great animals

    Cons

    None that I’ve seen

  • 20. Little Shelter in my life

    by: BBetus

I have adopted two wonderful dogs, and my daughter a new puppy, from the Little Shelter. My first dog was five years old and had been raised in an abusive environment and rescued from the NYC pound. The second is a personable, rambunctious bulldog mix, also rescued from the pound. They both turned out to be fabulous pets. The folks at Little Shelter are very careful to find good, stable, loving homes for the pets in their care. You have to pass an interview to qualify! That's because each animal is a welcome member of the Little Shelter family, and will be accepted back if anything after adoption goes wrong. I started volunteering last October and got to see the operation first-hand. The first dog I walked (in training) was an elderly, overweight pit bull rescued from an abusive home. She had heartworms so bad they actually had to feed her Viagra every day in order to keep her alive. What an expense--and what a great dog! At LIttle Shelter, they see the good in every animal, no matter what the cost. Since then, I have walked lots of dogs, and been happy to see most of them find homes. If Little Shelter had a million-dollar makeover, they would make such difference in so many lives!

    Pros

Spacious, natural setting allows dogs ample exercize. Friendly, knowledgeable staff make adopting the right pet a priority. The cattery, with 400 cats, is immaculate! Every animal is treated with hope and respect. Older dogs and dogs with physical problems are not turned away.

    Cons

Aging facilities need to be updated. More dogs could be accommodated with larger indoor facilities.

  • 22. Little Shelter in Huntington New York

    by: girlonline

Quite simple, Wizard saved our lives and Little Shelter saved his. After suddenly losing Stone, our beloved 7-year-old cairn, to epiletic seizures this past July, we were bereft with grief. The house was empty without him. While browsing the Internet, my husband discovered Wizard, a 3-year-old male cairn at Petfinder.com. It said he was at Little Shelter in Huntington. We went down there the next morning and were thrilled to find he was still available but wouldn't be put up for adoption until the next day, after he was physically and temperament approved for adoption. The next day Little Shelter was holding an Adoption Fair, so we arrived as soon as they opened and staked our claim to Wizard. We were impressed not only with the shelter's cleanliness and the healthy appearance of the animals it had rescued, but also by the care they took before allowing just anyone to take a pet home. We were interviewed to make sure that we would make a good family for Wizard and had to provide references from friends, relatives and our vet. We were also counseled about Wizard's health condition (he had arrived at the shelter with a urinary tract infection) and how to treat it (we were provided with medication). We received a follow-up visit with the vet the shelter uses. Since our rescue of Wizard, the shelter has periodically called to check on how he is doing. We welcome these calls to thank them again for the joy Wizard has given us and to thank them for saving this sweet little boy. We discovered that Wizard had been rescued by Little Shelter after being placed by his former owner in a kill shelter. We are horrified to think that someone placed this sweet, loving canine in a kill shelter when there is a wonderful facility like Shelter that works hard to place animals in the best new home possible. We continue to support Little Shelter and hope ZooToo will, too.

    Pros

    No-kill, clean, humane, friendly, knowledgeable

    Cons

    None

  • 23. The Little Shelter Community Deserves a Makeover!

    by: ztT4MP93322330

I think Little Shelter has wonderful volunteers. I also think that the front office staff was as helpful as possible. I think the property is impressive and the dogs were walked and excercised frequently. I think they deserve a makeover because they make do with what they have. There is nothing wasted. I also felt that the website itself was easy to navigate and full of information.

    Pros

I received call backs when I left messages, we felt we received special consideration when we showed extreme interest in the dog we eventually adopted

    Cons

I was not fully confident in the vetinary care that the dog received

    by: JanetPirrone

A cat and a dog become what is given to them by their caretakers. My little Hallie was rescued by LITTLE SHELTER ANIMAL RESCUE & ADOPTION CENTER, whose Volunteers put their hearts and souls into each and every little boy and girl to whom they feed and give a warm, safe home. Hallie is the sweetest and most sensitive being -- animal or human -- that we have ever known. We cannot imagine our lives without Hallie. And, therefore, we cannot imagine what our lives would have been without LITTLE SHELTER ANIMAL RESCUE & ADOPTION CENTER. They give meaning to the lives of so many people and families with the gifts of the little "babies in fur" that they prepare for adoption.\n\nTHANK YOU LITTLE SHELTER ANIMAL RESCUE & ADOPTION CENTER for bringing Hallie into our lives. Janet & Doug P.\n\n

    Pros

The very best reputation, and well deserved

  • 26. You don't need a pet to love Little Shelter

    by: LindsayJWalters

I might be in the minority here, but I don't actually own a pet. However, they are an amazing organization that has a huge heart. Little Shelter came into my life a few years back with a story on the local news about puppies who were born with cleft pallets. Little Shelter guaranteed care for these adorable puppies, and I could not help but be moved. I've been a patron for a few years now and when I decide to adopt a pet, it will be from Little Shelter.

    Pros

    Wonderful organization

    by: 3LEGS

Once upon a time I was very "broken". I don't remember what happened to me but a kind samaritan found me in the street and brought me to Little Shelter Animal Rescue. I needed emergency surgery. My rear legs were severely damaged. The left one couldn't be saved and had to be amputated and the right one was fractured with torn tendons. That leg was in a cast for a long time and I wasn't able to move around at all. As a result of my inactivity, I developed nerve damage in my right front leg. The wonderful caregivers at Little Shelter initiated my rehabilitation. They patiently helped me take a few tiny steps in my little pink ace bandage (even though it hurt alot). Then one day a lady came to see me and said that I could go to her "forever home" where I would have brothers and sisters with 3 legs just like me. That lady became my "Mommy" and named me Elphaba Glinda Pretty (the "Pretty" name is because she wanted me to have good self-esteem!). I went home with Mommy on October 6, 2006 and since that time I have become strong and happy. Most of all, I am loved every minute of every day. Thank you Little Shelter for the happy ending to my story. The end...no, just the beginning.

    Pros

    Atmosphere of caring and comfort

    Cons

    Limited space

  • 28. I love Little Shelter!

    by: ScoutsMommy

We adopted our dog, Scout, from the Little Shelter in 2002. She was not the dog we went to see; she was the dog that found us. The staff at Little Shelter spent several hours with us to help us make certain that we were the right parents for her.\r\n\r\nWe were impressed with the open space at the facility, but recognized that the inside spaces were in need of substantial renovation. We have made Little Shelter our animal charity of choice, and hope that they are able to benefit from this makeover!\r\n\r\n

    Pros

The staff members are incredible--they know and love each animal and take the time to make sure each adoptee is going to its forever home.

    Cons

The facility needs updating to house the ever-increasing number of stray and abandoned animals in the area, and to allow the facility to best serve the commuinty.

  • 29. Little Shelter wants nothing but the best!

    by: nypeach17

My fiance and I went to little shelter not too long ago to look for a new addition to our family. While we did not end up finding our little one we did have a wonderful time. they took the time out to walk us through all the animals that would fit our lifestyle, any preferences or restrictions we had, etc. They had a little story behind each of their animals. They took us to the back and showed us all the animals they were medically treating. They really put the animals first and won't just let them go for the sake of turnover. they find great fits and treat their animals there with respect, care, love and praise. It was a great feeling to be there and see what a shelter is really all about. Providing animals all they need and want until they find their forever homes. I really appreciate that they get to know the adopters before just setting them up with anyone....not every person is a fit for every animal. \r\n\r\nKeep up the GREAT work guys!!!\r\n\r\n

    Pros

Caring, family based, animals come first, stop at nothing to give the best

    Cons

they need more resources to do all the great many things they have planned

    by: coty88

We love Little Shelter! We adopted our Phoebe thirteen years ago from Little Shelter. (On a sad note, she passed two weeks ago.) The staff was just wonderful-Phoebe was an abused dog who was afraid of men. My husband and I fell in love with her the minute we saw her. I remember the staff being very particular about who would be allowed to adopt her. We were so very lucky to have had her in our lives. This past November we adopted another dog from Little Shelter. Zoey was part of a litter that was nursed back to health by the Little Shelter Staff. The entire litter had ringworm and the staff took great care of the puppies and they were all adopted. We recently attended a fundraiser at The little shelter and were amazed that after four months and twenty five pounds, the staff easily recognized Zoey! It is obvious this is a caring and devoted shelter and we wholeheartedly support them!

    Pros

The staff truly knows each animal and tries to make the best match possible.

    Cons

    NONE

    by: marg5769

A year ago we were looking for a dog for my son, he is timid and afraid of animals that are to big. We really wanted him to find a best friend. We went to several larger facilities on the island and I was very disappointed with the choices and the costs. (bigger is not better!) \r\nMy friend suggested Little Shelter, it is where she adopted her dog. (who is awesome)\r\n\r\nWe went to visit, we were given a tour and I explained my sons fears. The staff was extremely patient and very accomodating to our needs, they never tried to force any one dog. They allowed my son to find his best friend. And there she was, this beautiful little puppy, he was drawn to her immediately. Ruby is now a year old and is definitely a huge part of our family. \r\n\r\nThank you to everyone at the shelter for your help in finding the newest member of our family!

    Pros

not to big that is has become just a business, great staff and choices

    Cons

I can not thank Little Shelter enough for the help they gave me and my pet family. They assisted me with vouchers and medical care for my three new additions to my home. I am so greatful, because without their help, these loving cats would have ended up in harms way. Thank you again Little Shelter, I could not have done it without your help :)

I adopted a dog with special needs from Little Shelter in 2005 and she is my sweet angel. The shelter did a thorough background check and follow up to make sure Missy was being taken care of properly. They are thoroughly devoted to taking care of these animals and ensuring that they find their forever homes.

    Pros

Passionate and dedicated staff members who care about each and every animal

    Cons

In desperate need of makeover to modernize and make more efficient

    by: Suzq31

I've adopted 2 dogs from here and am in the process of finding another. I will only adopt from here because the do a great job of screening and are really concerned that these animals find forever homes. I always reccommend them to anyone I know who is looking for a new pet. And some of my friends have adopted from here also. They could always use donations if any one is interested. Also volunteers. Go for a tour and you will se why this is the best

    Pros

Everyone is very helpful and friendly and loves these animals

    Cons

    Can't find any

  • 37. Little Shelter is Close to my Heart

    by: gabster44

I volunteered at the Little Shelter for a little under a year before I had to move away. This shelter is an amazing shelter that does amazing work. They have a house full of cats that mostly just want love when you walk through the door. There dogs are just as cute as can be. We worked hard to break bad habits and to get some of them to be comfortable around us humans. The shelter runs off donations and volunteers and them moment I'm back in that town I will be volunteering for this shelter.

    Pros

    Great people doing great work.

    Cons

Small, needs more organized places for dogs and cats.

  • 38. Little Shelter is Amazing

    by: marges

I visited Little Shelter in January 07 to find a cat whom I could love as much as my 17-year-old tabby who had just died. The folks at Little Shelter brought me to the cattery where there were about 300 cats and kittens waiting to be adopted. The staff knew the story of EVERY cat in that place. They knew which ones liked the company of other cats or dogs and which ones liked to be the only animal in the house. When I finally chose "Peanutbutter" the staff said a very affectionate goodbye to her. The shelter had provided her with surgery to remove bladder stones and make her "adoptable." I was so impressed with the caring shown to her and to each animal in their charge.\r\n\r\nUnfortunately, the buildings are old and rundown. The staff manages to keep them fairly clean and definitely odor-free but I know it is a struggle. This shelter would benefit tremendously from a major makeover.

    Pros

    Incredibly dedicated and knowledgeable staff

    Cons

They just don't have enough room!

  • 39. A good group!

I'm the transport driver for the BG-WC Humane Society and we transport a lot of dogs to shelters and rescues up north who find them wonderful homes. We've been working with Little Shelter Animal Rescue & Adoption for several years now and they're a good group! They're caring and compassionate, they've placed so many dogs from our shelter. They really do good work.

    Pros

    Great Rescue

    Cons

  • 41. What a Shelter!

    by: luvmydog15

All I can say is that I am truly grateful that Little shelter was there to take in our pug, Guiness when he needed help. He needed medical care, and his owner or someone else dropped him on their doorstep to take care of him. He was so happy when we first met him, that we didn't really want to take him away from what had become his home. It was a shame though that they had to travel so far to the vet for his care. An onsite medical facility would sure help this no kill center. It has a beautiful piece of property to let the dogs run wild on. And from the reviews, sounds like they take good home-like care of the cats too. Please everyone out there. Rack up the points for this shelter to win the makeover. by: nanyc

Some years ago they rescued a large 12-year-old white german shepherd with health problems from a town shelter. Not many places would do this, but they did and we added this amazing dog to our family (of 4 cats and two other dogs). Bless them for seeing our "magic" girl and saving her so she could have a chance to have a forever home. They're really wonderful there, and they really do care. I couldn't think of a better shelter to support.\n

The little shelter is an amazing place full of amazing people who really care about animals. They always go out of their way to find the right home for every animal that comes through and it's easy to see they really want the best for each and every animal they care for. This place is a gem on long island. The facility is aging and they do the best with what they can but operate on donations so they are doing the best they can.

  • 48. The greatest "little" shelter on Long Island!

    by: RFelice

After one of our pet past away this winter we went to just about every shelter in Suffolk County. It seemed as though the other shelters staffs were too busy or just not knowledgeable about their animals or they were paid employees and just spending their time. We were not able to find a dog that would get along well with our family, which includes an AmStaff, a 19 year old cat and an 8 year old cat. At Little Shelter they were wonderful. They took me, my husband and one of my sons to see all the dogs. They knew all of their animals and recommended which would be the right fix in our home. Then we came back with our AmStaff. They spent 1 1/2 hours with her and the puppy that we fell in love with. They made a great match. Our two dogs are in love. We could not find the great service that we found here at Little Shelter. We are so thankful for them.

    Pros

Everything! Everyone in each department is very knowledgeable

    Cons

    Nothing.

    by: szigethy4

We adopted our Great Stafordshire bull terrier from them 7 years ago. They did a full back ground check since she was abused before us. She is now the love off our life. The little shelter did every thing to make sure she would be ok. They came by our house to check and called us after. It was so nice to know they care even after the animal is adopted. We try to bring them food and drop off money when ever possible. I hope they keep up the good work!!

    Pros

Very nice staff / screen family before adoting/ great care for the animals

    Cons

    Not enough people to help!

  • 52. Caring Shelter, dedicated staff

    by: tiggr4U

The Little Shelter is staffed by a dedicated team of hard-working volunteers. When two pups were born with a life-threatening deformity, all came together to obtain professional assistance and whatever funding was necessary to provide emergency medical care, follow-up and training to make these pups well and adoptable: one of many happy endings for The Little Shelter. They make a difference in our community while reaching out to other locations wherever there are animals in need.

This shelter is absolutely wonderful. Animals are the number one priority at this shelter. They do amazing work within the community and in other states as well. They have helped with the Katrina disaster as well as many other disasters involving animals. by: Linny53

We've gotten two dogs from Little Shelter and recommend them to everyone. The Staff is totally dedicated to finding homes for these animals and are wonderfully honest about the animals. I've been to other places where the breed and condition of animals is completely fictitious, in order to move them out quickly. This is never the case at Little Shelter. They let you take your time and find the perfect match. They allow you to take the dogs out for walks on the grounds and really see if this is the best match. They are very careful with their screening process as well.\n Arlene and Mike are amazing as well as the rest of the staff. They are truly dedicated dedicated to the animals.\n They even have a program where a Kill shelter in Virginia sends animals up to them to prevent euthanizing them. \n That's where Nissa came from. I saw her when she first arrived and went back as soon as she had been cleared for adoption. They let me bring my daughter and her dog back to do a compatabilty test play date. He also came from Virginia to Little Shelter.\n I can't say enough about what an great organization they have there. \n

    by: narpet7

Although I live a few states away and haven't been able to personally visit, I have transported and sponsored animals that were being taken in by Little Shelter. Dogs and cats who would have otherwise been euthanized in the rural shelters of Southern Virginia get a second chance through this wonderful place. What I particularly love is that they take all kinds of dogs, not just those who have a high adoptability profile. They also have wonderful fund raisers that I usually take part in. I can't say enough good things about Little Shelter!

    by: Yodasnuggs

My family has adopted two dogs from Little Shelter in the past three years. One was your average dog looking for a family, one was a terrified dog who would have been put to sleep in a normal shelter. But Little Shelter treated them exactly the same, and found them both a great home, because that's what they do. They don't discriminate and believe that every animal deserves a good home.

  • 81. Little Shelter: Teaching Children About Responsible Pet Ownership

    by: Catfisch

As a Girl Scout leader, I invited Little Shelter to come and speak to our Brownie troop about what they do at the shelter. The wonderful volunteers shared heart-warming stories about the animals they care for and how they help to find them loving forever homes. They brought some adorable dogs and cats with them to show the troop. But the most significant thing they shared with the girls was a discussion about the importance of responsible pet ownership. The volunteers stressed how cute, little puppies grow into big dogs that need love and care throughout their whole lives. Pets are not disposable. The Little Shelter volunteers discussed the importance of choosing to adopt a new pet as opposed to buying one because there are so many free animals just waiting to be loved. They also talked about how crucial it is to spay or neuter a new pet - another part of being a responsible pet owner. Little Shelter is one of those amazing places where animals are well-cared for and loved by devoted volunteers. Little Shelter was built out of love and it genuinely deserves an upgrade of its aging facilities so it can continue to carry out its mission of love for all animals in need.

    Pros

Caring, responsible volunteers help make Little Shelter Great!

    Cons

    Needs Facility upgrades

    by: Sean518

On November 27,2007, I lost my male cat, 8 Ball , after 19 years of love and devotion. I adopted him and his sister, Inky, from a friend of mine who gave them to me when they were kittens. After 8 ball died, I had gone on the web and started to look up cats for adoption. My nephew Jake's grandfather , George Beatty , is in charge of the Smithtown Animal Shelter on Route 25 in Smithtown. I put in the heading "Cat adoptions" and Little Shelter was the first one to come up. I started to go through the web site. I also noticed that they had a program of sponsoring pets. THus, for people like me who may not be ready to adopt their next pet, they could sponsor a dog or cat to help in their care at Little Shelter. I thought this was a wonderful program and wanted to participate. I contacted Little Shelter and spoke to Arleen, a very nice person who works there and is in charge of the sponsor ship program. She told me how it worked and invited me to visit the cattery and pick out which ones I would be interested in sponsoring. I picked 5. She also asked if I wish to volunteer. At first, I was not sure, but after some thought, I thought it would be wonderful to spend sometime with the homeless cats at the shelter. I have been doing so for about 2 months and I have fallen in love with a bunch of them. Two of the cats I sponsor have been adopted and I am so happy. There are 3 that I have considered adopting myself, if Inky will allow. This is a great shelter.

  • 88. Little shelter people are good people

    by: itsblueiz

I am the Vet Tech over at Babylon Animal Shelter. I had the pleasure to speak with a lady who runs Little Shelter. I was trying to fundraise money for a young pit bull puppy that needed surgery on his leg and hips. Appearently the dog had got hit by a car and was sent to our shelter. I tryed to make the pup as comfortable as possible until I could raise money for his surgery. After talking to rescue....I was referred to a wonderful woman from Little Shelter who said she would put up the money for the puppy's leg. \r\n I was very touched by how she was thinking outside her home into others ,such as mine. \r\n THANKS !!! FOR BEING THERE!!!\r\n\r\n ( After seeing the Dr. , I had the puppy adopted out to a wonderful family in Rochester,NY. I drove him up my self...so I could ensure he was placed in the right hands. )

    Pros

  • 90. They gave me my greatest gift

    by: kkoz125

This shelter gave me the greatest gift - my dog Lexi. They rescued her at 10 weeks old after many of her siblings had died because the owner left them all outside. Lexi is now 2 1/2 years old and is the greatest thing to have come into my life!\r\nThe staff at the shelter is amazing and treats all the animals as their own. And they truley try to choose a pet owner - like they would a babysitter for their own kids. It was a process to adopt Lexi, but it warmed my heart that they wouldn't just hand the dogs over to anyone was willing to pay - as many other shelters do. They have resuced these pets and the adoption process protects these animals from ever having to experience anything like the neglect, abuse, or lonliness many of them lived through before calling Little Shelter home. And they are one of few shelters that takes in and cares for the hard to place animals - they are angels!!!!

    Pros

Amazing staff who love all the animals like their own.

    Cons

Small - could use a million $ makeover!

    by: operadiva

I have volunteered at Little Shelter, in the cattery, for about 7 years. The genuine care, love and concern shown by the staff toward the animals there keeps volunteers like me coming year after year. Many staff members foster kittens in their own homes because they must be fed every 2 hours. Some adult cats are also fostered because of medication needs. Our Vet Tech is tireless when it comes to tackling the medical needs of our cat residents. One our volunteers is currently taking care of a cat, adopted as a kitten from Little Shelter, because it's owner is undergoing debilitating chemotherapy. There are so many examples of going the "extra mile" to try to save a beloved cat and we grieve when we have to give up.\r\n\r\nMy experience at Little Shelter has taught me about the real goodness in people, and I am grateful for it.\r\n\r\n

    by: DVREscobar

I recently visited the Little Shelter as my husband and i had a futon mattress to donate. We thought it would be a great idea for something that was in good condition, not worthy of throwing out, to donate for dogs to get comfy in. We called the Little Shelter and they welcomed our donation and offered us a tour when we dropped it off. The animals are beautiful, but they are in desperate need of a make over. The staff takes very good care of the animals and i love the Cat house as the cat run free amoung many! They were courtious and we were thankful for the time they spent with us to show us around. I was verry happy the mattress will be put to good use.

    by: nylib

Twelve years ago, we adopted Max from the Little Shelter and it was a great experience. Last April, two years after we lost poor Max to cancer, my brother and I returned and brought Jack home. The staff answered so many questions for us right away. Of course, they called our referrals to ensure Jack would be in good hands. As we had adopted from them before, they did need to do a home inspection, but asked us many questions about our home. \n\nI called them several times in the ensuing months to ask about the pet food recall and my concerns about running in hot and cold environments with a long-haired dog. They were always wonderful and provided accurate answers. \n\nTheir outreach is excellent, events are well done and the fact that they take animals from kill shelters into their no-kill facility means every pet you adopt truly saves the life of another.

    Pros

Excellent staff loves animals and people

    Cons

Just wish it were bigger and they could help more pets!

  • 104. KIND HEARTS

    by: Elaina83

I have been supporting the Little Shelter for the last 5 years. I had the good fortune of being able to volunteer there one summer and it was so rewarding! Unfortunatley I had to cut my stay there short due to the unforseen death of my best friend (my Nikki Girl). But I have been sending donations and participating in all of thier fundraisers ever since. I applaud this facility for really going above and beyond to find the perfect "forever homes" for thier animals. Many other shelters that I have visited give thier animals away to the highest bidders, while little shelter's interview process is way more extensive and particular. The counselors work hard to make sure that the animal they place is going to be in a compatible home for thier lifestyle. Its not about they money with them...its about doing whats right!

    Pros

    animal placement

    Cons

Too small for the love they have--GET THEM THE MAKEOVER!

i adopted my dog from little shelter and it is just fantastic there. they take great care of the animals and really care about what they are doing. i've been to other shelters where when i walked in the people there acted like i was disrupting there conversation they couldnt have cared less. at little shelter its the complete oppisite. they have you fill out a form to make sure you will take good care of your pet you are adopting. i am thinking of adopting another dog and i will definitly go to little shelter.

    by: Sean418

On November 27 , 2007, I lost my cat 8 ball. He was a 19 year old Domestic short hair. I had him and his sister ( who is still alive ) since they were kittens. I was very upset and started to put into a search engine cat adoptions. Now my nephew, Jake's grandfather , George Beatty, runs the Smithtown Animal shelter and it is very nice, the Little Shelter was the first one to come up on a search engine. I viewed the cats and visited the cattery. I am now sponsoring 6 cats at Little Shelter and hopefully I can bring one or 2 home soon, if Inky allows. The staff is very friendly and really seem to care. I am suppose to start as a voluteer there next week. I am looking forward to the opportunity to volunteer in the cattery.

  • 120. Wonderful place!

    by: jodistone

I found out about Little Shelter when i was looking for a new volunteering position. When I learned of their no kill ethic and free roaming cattery, I know I'd found the place. Pretty much every work night I would go for a couple of hours and "socialize" which is a fancy word for "hang out" with or "snuggle" with as many cats as would let me. I made many fantastic friends there, both feline and human! When I found out I was moving to brooklyn and wouldnt be able to make it out to the shelter as ofter I was heartbroken. The cats there are so amazing and the care they get is top notch. Before leaving I made a big decision. I was going to take one of my friends home with me. I was torture trying to decide out of the hundreds of cats there which one I wanted. Of course I wanted many, but already having two cats, I could really only take on one more. Finally a month before moving one special little cat named Peaches was returned, again. Her third time. The excuse always the same, shes too shy, she needs to much dental work. She was clearly heartbroken to be back and her and I made a very strong and special bond. I couldnt bear to leave her there. She needed me and a forever home. I didnt see her for two weeks before I took her. I was so anxious. Not because I thought someone would take her, but because I knew she was just so sad. When I walked back in with my carrier and she saw me, she meowed so loudly and started pacing. She knew I'd come back for her. Im going off on a tangent right now, but basically my point is that had "peaches" been returned three times to any other shelter she would have been immediately "terminated" Little Shelter knows that every cat is special and needs them. Tula, formerly known as Peaches, has finally found her "purr"ever home and is happily adjusting to a steady life of face rubs and a nice warm bed to call her own, forever. Thank you Little Shelter for everything!

My family adopted our Pomeranian from little shelter 12 years ago. The staff has always shown dedication and caringness, visibly seen, with the dogs. They even rescued a few from hurricane katrina! They also have a cemetary on the grounds and a walking/garden area for volunteers to walk the dogs. I met a volunteer there recently, who has been there for about 10 years now, lovely caring woman. The grounds were cleaned by volunteers too! \r\nOne of my friends dogs is buried there, yankee, and she loves the fact that she can visit him at anytime.\r\n\r\nThe dog cages and rooming place is too small for them, they really need more room! Please help them.\r\n\r\n\r\nThank you, \r\nKelly Wallace\r\nAnimal Advocate\r\n

    Pros

benefit to the dogs/cats, anyone wanting to adopt must meet their criteria, in getting the dog the best care and homelife and not into the hands of someone who would abuse/abandon them!

  • 129. Thank Heavens For Little Shelter!

    by: louisez

In addition to Little Shelter, our family has adopted dogs from two other major animal shelters during the past 25 years. Our first experience with Little Shelter was back in the mid 1990's, the second in 2004 and most recently this past fall. Only at Little Shelter did the staff take the time to extensively evaluate and listen to our needs - some other shelters are only too anxious to 'complete the sale' and overlook important facts and issues. Only at Little Shelter did we receive follow up phone calls and offer of care (should we have required it). \r\n\r\nLittle Shelter is the only shelter that I recommend. They have never lost sight of the fact that their primary mission is the safety and well-being of the animals they rescue and care for. \r\n\r\nIf not for Little Shelter, our lives would not be enhanced by our Max, 11 1/2, Beckyanne, seven, and (most recently) grand-pet, Chester, age three.\r\n\r\nThank you to the staff of Little Shelter for all that they do.

    by: Belewgirl

The Little Shelter is a wonderful organization with a dedicated and knowledgeable, hard working staff. It is operated 24/7 365 days. All the animals are vaccinated, tested, and spayed or nutured before they go to their new home, which is included in the adoption fee. There are many breeds to choose from as well as young kittens & puppies and older cats & dogs. It is one of the cleanest shelters I have ever seen. The staff works incredibly hard to give these guys a warm and nurturing, loving environment to live in, until they can find their new forever homes. It is a non-kill shelter and no animal is ever turned away. I can't say enough about all the wonderful things that happen everyday at Little Shelter.

    Pros
