  • 1. This is sad

    by: HopeK

Dogs in this so called shelter is in horrible conditions. they left on the sun with no shade and very little watter. And I can't call a staff friendly at all.

    Pros

    Do they care?

    Cons

They need a new facility and employees

  • 2. Dog attack

    by: duckgills

I was attacked by 2 dogs on the street. The dogs were locked in the owner's garage after that. The owner called many times and so did I to request that animal control pick up the dogs. They said it was the owner's responsibility to bring the dogs in. At the point these dogs ripped my arm apart should have been the moment that these dogs were not allowed to be in contact with anyone except "professionals". When the owner finally got a hold of someone they were told that they had to bring the dogs in within a few hours. The owner was unable to do it so her mother had to do it. While the mother was loading a 110lb dog and 70-80lb dog into the truck an animal control officer drove up and did not offer any assistance. He even had the truck for animals. When the mother arrived at animal control the 110lb dog lunged forward and pulled her to the ground and she ended up at Urgent Care. My concern is that at any point those dogs could have attacked another person. How would you like to walk out of animal control and be face to face with two very large dogs that attacked a person. The owners were irresponsible which resulted in the attack. After the attack animal control was irresponsible in not taking care of the public. They my be overworked and understaffed but at minimum their job is to protect the public.

    Pros

    ??

    Cons

Not protecting people from dangerous dogs, communication

  • 3. JCAC needs updated!!!!

    by: kittnfaery13

I have been to JCAC a couple of times. My mom got a dog and a cat from there. First off, The shelter is very hard to find. You have to go down several different gravel roads and the signs for the shelter are so small they are easy to miss. Also, this shelter is basically a trailer for an office, one small building for dogs (that have to lay on concrete floors with no blankets or beds)and 1 room for cats. That is no where near enough room for all the animals they recieve. This shelter is in DESPERATE need of updating. You can ask anyone who lives in Jefferson County. Please vote for Jefferson County Animal Control. Being the only Animal control in such a large county is hard, but having no where to put the animal and resulting to unnessary euthanizia is worse. Just because there is no where to hold the animals.

    Pros

    clean environment

    Cons

    too small/hard to find

  • 4. please help them

    by: jonmre

I believe they would do alot more if funding were available to them sometimes doing what you can and wishing for the ability to do more can be frustrating. I couldnt do their job but if no one could the ones that are saved wouldnt be so kudos to them for trying.I think for what this facility is its pretty good.Alot of the other facilities wont even try or even let the ladies post the animals to try to find them homes.

    Pros

they seem to do what they can from what Ive seen

    Cons

need help to update to inable them to do more

  • 5. jefferson county animal control

    by: SarahLincoln

I personally have worked with this facility through my school. I attended Jefferson College for a year and we worked on the animals and gave them some training and adopted them out. this was a very good experiance for the students. this facility could use a makeover but I know that their budget is very tight. they are running off donations which are very appreciated.

    Pros

they try to fimd homes for as many animals as they can

    Cons

some of these animals are so aggressive that they are immediatly euthanized apon arrival

  • 6. Useless

    by: nowwhat

If doing the best they can means not doing their jobs, then you are absolutely right. They are discriminative against those who they will help. Why does it take a week for them to come drop some papers in my neighbor's yard after their dogs came onto my property and killed my 12 week old puppy? However, when these same people called animal control on my grandmother's dogs they were there within the hour. All her dogs had done was escape and bark out in her driveway. They didn't kill anything.\r\n Also, why was I lied to? I called and made a report Thursday afternoon. Noone came Friday morning like promised. When I call Friday afternoon they tell me someone has been dispatched and will be there within 2 hours. Noone comes. I call at four fifteen in the afternoon and am told to call back in five minutes. I call back and noone answers even though they didn't close for over half an hour after that. I call Tuesday morning and the secretary who was off Thursday and Friday tells me I wasn't even in the computer. She also says she will send someone out immediately. Noone comes.\r\n I call again Wednesday morning and the secretary tells me a woman named Diane has been sent out and that I have to talk to her to get the report on what happened. I leave message after message and still noone calls me back.\r\n Finally, Thursday morning I get in my car and drive the 35 miles to animal control. They dispatch someone, even though they told me they already had. All the woman does is come and sit in my neighbor's driveway, fill out some papers, and then throw them out the window because shes too scared to get out with 5 huge dogs circling her truck.\r\n The dogs are still loose, they still bark at my 5 year old child and I as we wait for the bus. I would call animal control but I know it would do me no good.\r\n My puppy's name was Chubby. He looked just like a cute little fuzzy teddy bear. When the German Sheperd and the Pit Bull attacked him he didn't have a chance. When I went after them to save him the German Sheperd picked him up by his stomach and tried to carry him away so he could get him away from me.\r\n My daughter got off the school bus 2 minutes after this happened. We put her and the puppy in the car to try to make it to the animal hospital but he died about five minutes into the trip. It only took nine minutes for him to internally bleed out. My daughter cried as she watched him die.

    Pros

    I found none.

    Cons

They discriminate and lie to you. They try to make the one who reports the offense feel as if they have done something wrong.

  • 7. nice people

    by: corgigirl

They took my pit bull when no other shelter would, for that I thank them. I hated the fact pit bull rescues wouldn't take her. I had to get rid of her so jcas was my only option.

    Pros

    they took my dog

    Cons

    they need more space

  • 8. Help our 4 Legged Friends

    by: GinaS

I have adopted 2 dogs from Jefferson County, they both have been great and lived long lives. The people that work there are very knowledgable and do the best they can with what they have to work with. THe animals are well cared for.\r\n I have 3 dogs of my own and would love nothing better than see this shelter get more space and recognition they deserve.

    Pros

Staff is great with the animals and people

    Cons

    Crowded

  • 9. Let's help them out!

    by: hippiepanda

They could use the space. So many strays in Jefferson County, and not enough loving homes. Expanding the shelter, so they could go no- kill, would be awesome. People say that we need to spay and neuter our pets. How about humans? They are the main reason why there is over population of unwanted companions. Not to mention why our planet is slowly dying.

    Pros

People who really care work there.

    Cons

    The place is so small.

  • 10. JCAC

    by: ztT4MP28697604

I have lived in Jefferson County for 13 years. I have to say this since Jim was hired there has been a dramatic change there. In the past they did not try and find a rescue group to help save the animals. I have resuce several animals from there, put my own money into getting utd on shots and spayed/neuterd. Please vote to help JCAC get a much needed make over. Attached is just one of the dogs that I recued, after the owner was found and decided not to come and get him.

    Pros

They have limited funds and do the best that they can.

    Cons

    NEED MORE MONEY AND SUPPORT

  • 11. JCAC

    by: Apacheblase

These people do a wonderful job helping animals. I wish people would be more responsible and not breed surplus animals.

    Pros

They do the Lord's work taking care of animals

    Cons

They need more money and help

  • 15. They need a makeover!!!!

    by: taylor4848

This shelter is almost always overcrowded. The employees do everything they can to get animals adopted out as quickly as possible yet still have to euthanize far too many lovely animals. With a makeover they could maintain more animals and get more into forever homes instead of having to euthanize them. The employees work hard and deserve to work under better conditions. The animals so appreciate the efforts, but would benefit from a larger and more up to date space as well.

    Pros

    lovely and caring staff

    Cons

    too small, outdated facility

  • 19. Please help if you can...

    by: fluffythang

Anyone who can, should try to help this shelter. They have a huge area to deal with...and have little money to work with. They're very nice people and work very hard. These are people who only do their work out of love. Please donate.

    Pros

    Hard-working staff

    Cons

    Limited funds to work with

  • 20. Save Our Shelter

    by: jawideman

This shelter really needs help. It is very old and outdated. They are overcrowded and their office is a single wide trailer. I am part of the Jefferson College Veterinary Technician program and we get our dogs from them. We get them, make them healthy and happy animals, then find them forever homes. This shelter makes it possible for us to work hands on with animals and become skilled Vet Techs so we can help even more animals. So... please help the Jefferson County Animal Shelter!

    Pros

They really do care about the animals.

    Cons

They cant afford to care for all the animals, so unfortunately they do have to euthanize some.

  • 21. Trying to help

    by: Sketchyboy

I've never actually been to this shelter, but a rescue group gets a lot of animals from there. From what I understand, they do a great job with the limited staff and budget that they have to deal with. They always work with the rescues to get their animals saved.

    Pros

    helpful

    Cons

    location

  • 22. What a great shelter!

    by: Nakedinthesun

Jefferson County Animal Shelter is the primary shelter for the county, so they get most if not all the animals from that area. Even with limited means they manage to find a way to give these animals a chance. They could really benefit from the million dollar makeover, or any help that you can offer!

    Pros

They do their best to find homes for the pets that come in.

    Cons

They euthanize after only five days due to limited space.

  • 23. In need of an update

  • 24. Doing the best they can

    by: JulieHundman

The last time I visited this shelter they were out of kitty litter and looking for donations. They try so hard and do the best they can for the animals in Jefferson County. \r\nThe facility is overworked and overwhelmed but still functioning.\r\nThe staff works hard and is SO efficient with what they have it is encouraging rather than depressing.\r\nKeep up the good work.\r\nWe are cheering for you.\r\n

  • 25. IN DIRE NEED OF FUNDS!

    by: mrdvc

This shelter doesn't get the attention and funding others in the St. Louis/Jefferson County area receive, but it is rurally located and therefore the recipient of many more animals than they can handle with their poor funding and ramshackle facility.

    Pros

staff works very hard and is caring

    Cons

no money and too many animals coming in!

  • 26. Great Place!

  • 27. Please help!

    by: skimogirl

It's a shame that not only does the shelter suffer, but the poor animals because of mindless people who want a "new toy" and then get bored with their "new toy" and dump them. Not only are those people depriving their "new toy", they are depriving the shelter of what little money they have. Hats off to the kind wonderful people who work and volunteer at the shelter!!

    Pros

    The people are wonderful

    Cons

    The facilities need help

  • 28. Please help Jefferson County Animal Shelter

    by: 2Weimaraners

WhenI read the article in the Leader, our local paper for Jefferson County, I cried. I saw the picture of the facitlity and the dog and being a dog lover, I had to do something to try to help this shelter. I have been involved in rescue and adoption of Weimaraners. When I read that this shelter has a traffic flow of over 4,000 animals a year, I knew they needed help. I am willing to do whatever I can to help them.

    Pros

This is the county I live in

    Cons

    The shelter needs updates

  • 29. About JCAC

    by: suerhoades

This shelter is so outdated and small that it cannot hold all the stray and abandoned animals in our county. Over 1/2 of them are euthanized every year because of this. These are family pets, cats and dogs who have lost their way, animals who have been literally dumped on the side of the road to die by careless and heartless people. This shelter takes the responsibility for all of this and does it the best way they can. You cannot have a heart and enjoy this job -- not when you have to kill a dog you became fond of on Thursday.\r\n\r\nA large group of citizens are seeing this problem for what it is and we are working very hard to find a solution.

    Pros

They try to rescue as many as they can

    Cons

Employees have a heart but can't use it

  • 30. Great shelter, loving staff

  • 35. I have been there!

    by: doglover1974

I took my dog BJ there. He started getting very aggressive towards me because I was the disciplinary owner of him. He also got his momma pregnant 2 times and I could not have him continue. At that time I could not afford to get him or Sissy fixed so I did the inevitable. I took BJ to Jefferson county animal shelter and the lady there told me that if noone adopted BJ in so much time he would be put down. They told me that I could call and find out what happened with him. I didn't want to know unfortunetly so I don't know if he survived or not. But other than that they were pretty nice..

    Pros

They take in animals spay and nueter and microchip and adopt out

    Cons

They are not a no kill shelter.

  • 37. DON'T FORGET THE ONES WHO HAVE NO HELP!

    by: beckywiseman

You can say many things about the shelters and rescues in the state of missouri. However, the pounds, this one especially receive little or no help when it comes to any type of support, under staffed like most are, under paid, and of course the worse of all OVER CROWDED! I applaud the workers here they really are people who have big hearts. This shelter needs better care for not only its employees but also for the many unwanted and uncared for animals looking to find a home where they are loved and cared for like they deserve. PLEASE DON'T FORGET THIS POUND!!!

    Pros

The staff really tries to help as much as they can.

    Cons

The pounds are under paid, staffed, and crowded.

  • 44. Great facility to adopt from...Very helpful

    by: courtneyd

I recently adopted a dog from this shelter through my sister and they made it extremely easy. The dog was pretty sick when we first met her, but the vets did a great job getting her meds and getting her healthy.\r\n\r\nI had no problem adopting from the shelter...I am an animal lover and live 2 hours away, but still everything went smoothly...even down to getting out new dog spayed and home with us safely.\r\n\r\nOur new dog is a wonderful addition to our family.

  • 46. Save These Animals

    by: ztT4MP44014634

This facility is in a county that has a general fund and like most unchartered counties, the money is always spent on people needs first and the animals are not a priority with the county government leaders. The workers and volunteers are dedicated but the shelter is a disgrace. The shelter is understaffed and over-populated. The manager does much of the work and facility maintenance himself and the kill rate is deplorable. This shelter desperately needs a makeover! Please save these animals.

    Pros

    Dedicated staff

    Cons

    Overpopulated and high kill rate

  • 47. They do need help bad

  • 48. JCAC really needs help

    by: Davebu

This shelter is in the middle of nowhere. Most residents don't even know it exists. There are peoples pets there all the time, and they don't even know it is there to look for them. The place is so old and outdated and the staff work in terrible conditions inside on old trailer. They really need help.

    Cons

  • 50. Our story

    by: ddismang

I knew when adopting my next puppy that it would have to come from a shelter. We chose a docile and sweet dog that we felt would match our family. Three hours after we had her at home, we knew something was wrong. We took her to our private vet, and they gave us the news that she had parvo. The good news is that 8 days later, she did get to come home to stay. She survived! JCAC told us we could bring her back to the shelter, but I knew her fate. I know first hand that this shelter could use all the help it can get.

    Pros

able to get a beautiful new pet

    Cons

she had parvo when we adopted her

  • 51. JCAC

    by: alocheed

This shelter needs help badly! Covers a very large rural area, many people just drop there dogs in this area if not wanted, also they can't keep animals in shelter so long because of little room that they have, so many are euthanized before owner can locate them.

    Pros

staff works well with what little they have

    Cons

    budget getting cut soon

  • 52. great intentions not enough support

    by: cherilee

This place needs the makeover if any. \r\nThey are so overwhelmed with animals it is unreal. Everyone should band together and see that this shelter gets what they deserve!!

    Pros

    kind people, caring staff,

    Cons

    no space, no funds

  • 53. Jefferson County Animal Control

    by: stlboxerlover

This shelter is old, outdated, small and in an area that is not easily accessible. They are grossly underfunded and have very little community support. JCAC is in an area where spay/neuter seems to be a foreign concept. However, this shelter is staffed by many wonderful people that truly care about the animals and do their best with the little they have. They try hard to find homes for the animals and have formed many terrific relationships with area rescue organizations in effort to place these homeless animals. I'm sure there are shelters all over the country that are in dire need of a new or updated facility, but JCAC is in my "backyard" so I am keenly aware of how desperately they need help and have received my vote. I would like to encourage everyone to lend their support to JCAC for the $1,000,00 Shelter Makeover!!!!

    Pros

    A caring staff

    Cons

    An outdated, undersized facility

  • 54. They Need all the Help they can Get

    Cons

    They need more room

  • 56. They Need Help

    by: finkelover

I beg everyone who can to help this shelter. The staff there is very good to the animals and care so much but due to people not having the sense to spay/neuter their animals, this shelter has to euthanize alot of poor babies. On every visit there, my heart has been broken by the pleading in the animals' eyes. I try to donate when I can and urge everyone else to do the same!

    Pros

    Very Friendly Staff

    Cons

    Dingy Living Conditions

  • 57. They are challenged here

    by: dwigambler

The Jefferson County Animal Control, JCAC is overcrowded with animals due to lack of spay/neuter laws in Jefferson County. They need this money more than any other shelter, all it takes to know this is one trip out there.

    Pros

Willingness to work with rescue groups

    Cons

Horrible location (middle of nowhere), very high kill (not their fault)

This shelter does the best they can with what they have. Which isn't much and will be even less really soon. The staff there is very helpful and they try their best to get the animals adopted but due to funding limitations, they have a facility that is too small to hold to mass amount of animals coming in. The animals who come there generally have a 5 day hold and are then euthenized to make room for the next round that gets dropped off. The hours are limited and there isn't always enough staff to be open on Saturdays. They do work with various rescue group and that helps some. However, if they had a better location and a larger, more updated facility, these animals would definately have a better chance!

    Pros

Very Friendly staff, willing to work with rescues groups

    Cons

Horrible location, limited hours, HIGH KILL SHELTER

Unfortunately, the JCAC is overcrowded due to irresponsible pet owners. They deserve this money more than words can describe.

    Helpful workers

    So many animals

JCAC does the best they can with the limited resources. Their employees have not had a raise in two years and the budget is expected to be cut this year. The staff still tries to get animals adopted and work with several local rescue groups to save the dogs and cats that come to them. They were able to save 600+ dogs and cats over the previous year with a larger amount of animals coming in. It is hard to imagine a shelter needing this make-over more than they do! With more resources who knows what they could accomplish.

    Pros

    Great employees

    Cons

Worst location, no resources or support from county
