I visited the horse rescue in southwest Indiana this evening, and it is truly amazing! I am so inspired that people devote ALL of their time to help these horses. It's so great what the rescue staff does to help the horses, and I want to do more to help!

  • 9. If you need a good cry, check out the stories on their website...

    by: mckbryn01

I checked out IHR's website today. My daughter and I both share a love of horses, and I was looking for opportunities to get her involved in volunteer work. I cried for a good 30 minutes over the horror stories these rescued horses have endured. What wonderful people to open their hearts to these animals. Because horse require such specialized care, it takes a group of truly caring people to work so tirelessly on their behalf. \r\n\r\nThank you for the work you do, IHR!

  • 12. Horse Angels

    by: lakoches

I fostered an arabian mare for 6 mths until she was adopted. The people at the rescue work endless hours to help any horse they take in and the dedication they have is above and beyond what many people realize. Their personal lives are put on the back burner. I enjoyed working with them and seeing first hand the knowledge and love they have to care for these horses who deserve a better life.

    Pros

The dedication of the workers is unimaginable until you've seen it.

    Cons

Not enough money or supplies to help as much as they need

  • 13. God Bless the Horses!

    by: ktswalkin

I adopted a Paint gelding from the IN Horse Rescue. His name is Jake and he is such a good boy. It is awful to think that my beautiful boy might have ended up in the kill pen if it weren't for these wonderful people. Highly reccomended!! :o)

    Pros

    Very Honest, BIG HEARTS!

    Cons

  • 14. Helping horses across Indiana

    by: Thunderstruck504

A wonderful organization helping horses in need. They work solely on donations and volunteer work. I would trust them with my own horses should anything happen to me (and that's saying a lot). They don't turn horses away. They simply need more help and space to accomodate the increasing number of abused and neglected horses.

    Pros

    Horses first

    Cons

    Need more space and funds

  • 15. Dedicated Horse Lovers

    by: rjlupinskat

The most dedicated and caring people are running this rescue - they simply need much more marketing and exposure. Sadly, rescues have to be often run like businesses to the extent of 'commercializing' themselves in order to get the attention and assistance they need.\r\n\r\nThis group has overcome so many obstacles, face sometimes insurmountable odds, and yet they still do not nor will not turn away a single equine. God bless them all.\r\n\r\nSupport IHR, and save a horse's life!!!!

    Pros

    Such heart and determination

    Cons

    Need more marketing and exposure

  • 16. Job well done!

    by: missleodust

Originally from Indian, and unfortunately living out of state at this time, I have a special place in my heart for the Indiana Horse Rescue. \r\n\r\nTo tackle such a large number of abused horses from Gibson Co. at one time and give the care and love those horses so desperately needed - and some still need - is an accomplishment everyone should take applaud!\r\n\r\nKeep up the great work! I hope one day to be back in Indiana and able to volunteer!

    Pros

a little can go a long way

    Cons

    so many abused!

  • 17. Indiana horse rescue is wonderful

    Pros

I can't believe the time they spend as well as money to help all these horses. I love the way they post updates.

    Cons

I wish when you adopted the horse it was yours. Not have to send it back or ask permission to move it.

IHR gives everything that they have to the animals, and will do whatever it takes to help those that are in their care. They have benefited the state, and the equine community as a whole with their work and research. These people are altogether great people that deserve deep respect for what they do!!!!! They truely care about every animal!

  • 21. Amazing people with big hearts!

    by: ercramer

I took a horse from an acquaintance's farm to the rescue in July. Her picture is on the bottom of their page. As they mentioned, the improvement in this horse in one month from the condition I brought her in is absolutely nothing short of fantastic! When I brought her in, she had no will to live. It was estimated she was choking and they stayed up for 24 hours trying to encourage her to live. Her feet were a mess, she had never had her teeth floated and therefore, couldn't eat well. The team at IHR never gave up on her. They endured my many, many, MANY calls to them checking up on this horse that stole my heart and were kind enough to not take it out on me when the horse's former own backed out on providing the necessary donation fee. I am so impressed with these people and try to do all that I can for them. They have the ability to do so much and care so much. I think it would be fabulous to give a team like this the necessary funds to complete their mission in life. I know they've changed my life and one little thoroughbred mare near and dear to my heart no matter where she ends up. Wherever she goes, I know it will be a loving home well chosen for her by her new friends at IHR.

    Pros

All that they selflessly do for the horses.

    Cons

    None!

  • 22. Love for Horses' and Our Angels

    by: jules67

I have adopted many horses (too many to count!) and we are also a foster home for IHR. If you ever want to be apart of the miracle in adopting a horse and knowing the love that they have when they figure out they are safe and loved then IHR is the place to go! \n\nThey are the greatest bunch of people that I am pleased to call "friends" and how they can take a horse that is sick, starved or injured and watch them blossom into beautiful animals with the sparkle back in their eyes and willing to give all the love they have to give. \n \nOur family has been associated with IHR for 3 yrs. now and I have lost count as to the horses we have fostered or adopted but the whole time we have gotten so much joy and love from everyone of them and whenever we had problems, the "crew" at IHR was always on hand to help with any problem that has come around.\n\nIf you have the time, love, patience and space please consider either fostering or adopting a horse from IHR or if you aren't able to then would you please give a donation as they do not get any federal money and work only on donations to keep the horses safe.\n\nOpen your heart and help to give a horse the second chance at life and love that they deserve!

    Pros

This Organization does so much for Indiana in giving horses chances they may not have at a better life

    Cons

Lack of federal funds and help does not let them take in more horses

  • 23. IHR is supported by Indiana's trail riders

    by: nahobbs

I've been a supporter for many years. I have always felt them to be the most selfless rescue I have ever seen. They are so concerned about helping the horse in any way possible, no matter the situation. \r\n\r\nWe recently held a trail ride to raise funds for the Indiana Horse Rescue. 100 riders from around Indiana came to support the cause, including a few riding horses adopted from IHR. Some were quite young as shown in one of the photos.\r\n\r\nPlease, if you are looking for a new equine companion, consider meeting those lucky horses that have found a temporary rest at IHR.

    Pros

    Very caring

    Cons

    operate on a shoestring

  • 24. Rescue a Horse... Forget the Cowboy!

    by: PurplePoe

Our family has adopted two horses from this facility and we couldn't be happier. Even after our horses left their rescue, the staff members kept in touch with us about the horses' progress and success. The staff is very involved in their mission and passionate about horse welfare issues.

    Pros

They are passionate about what the do and make sure that the horse comes first

    Cons

Not enough people know about them...We supporters need to keep spreading the word :)
