  • 1. Ventura Humane--Not so humane

    by: Rescuerealtor

While shopping in Ojai, my friend and I found a dog running loose. Young dog, very friendly. Very thin. We took him to Ventura Humane. They assured me at the desk that they do not kill their dogs simply for not being adopted or claimed. After a couple weeks, my friend called to check on him. We were told he had not been claimed, nor adopted so he had been transferred to Ventura Animal Regulation in Camarillo! I was stunned. This is a high kill shelter! I have since found out that this is common practice by Ventura Humane. We immediately checked Camarillo's website and sure enough there he was. I have never felt so betrayed in my life. In the past, my family and I have donated a great deal to the Ventura Humane because they assured us they were "no kill". They neglected to mention that they send the animals out for someone else to perform that task. I checked with some of my colleagues who also donate to them and they were not aware of the way they "do business". The public needs to be aware that animals in their care are not necessarily "safe". The word "Humane" is being used loosely by too many organizations in order to secure donations.

    Pros

    Nice facility

    Cons

Dogs not adopted get shipped to high kill Camarillo (Animal Reg)

    by: ssgunter

My name is Linda Hodges. I own Unity Thrift Furnishing and Outreach in Taft California. \r\n100% of my store income goes to the dogs.\r\n\r\nThe Kern county area of California is flooded with puppies and dogs. I run a "non-profit rescue organization" using my store for our funding, selling new and gently used furniture with the help of volunteers. I run an advertisement in the local Taft Midway Driller Newspaper offering to take litters of puppies and dogs at any time, and help with the cost of spaying their female. \r\nThis is the only way we know how to stop the handing out of these puppies which would be dead or end up back out on the streets to repeat this sad cycle. When I started this organization I was told about a very special place called The Humane Society of Ventura County. \r\n\r\nThey are a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter celebrating their 75th anniversary. They do low-cost and no-cost spaying and neutering and a low-cost shot and microchip clinic. They have a great volunteer program and they have a humane officer who investigates animal neglect and abuse.\r\n \r\nThis place has been a Huge Blessing to us. They have taken at times up to 30 puppies a week. They are willing to help us in any way they can. We love them. They make us feel very welcome and when I say we, it is my friends and others who have stepped up to the plate to foster these dogs when necessary because Unity Thrift has no kennel. All of the dogs and puppies that we handle are either kept by the original owner until we can take them or by foster volunteers.\r\n \r\nThese women who run the shelter deserve the "MILLION DOLLAR MAKEOVER" They also take time with kids in the community and so graciously help the challenged and disabled as well. I just can’t say enough about them. They really care about the animals and people. Most other shelters aren’t willing to help out of other counties. Thank God they have. They have taken LOTS of dogs and puppies that would have been killed in our local shelters.\r\nTaft does not have any no-kill shelters locally. "City of Taft Animal Control" has a 90% kill ratio. \r\n \r\nWe hope and pray that if the "The Humane Society of Ventura County" doesn't win, is that there be another alternative to helping them get a new shelter.\r\n \r\nPLEASE HELP THEM.\r\nIF THEY HAD A BIGGER SHELTER, THEY COULD SAVE MORE DOGS.\r\n \r\nWe love Ojai, CA with The Humane Society of Ventura County.\r\nThey are wonderful.\r\n \r\nThank You \r\nLinda Hodges (Trixie)\r\n661-577-6903 cell\r\n661-765-4950 store\r\n661-763-3099 \r\n

    Pros

Clean, friendly, helpful, caring, WONDERFUL people

    Cons

  • 4. genuine, dedicated, and compassionate

    by: AlexisLovesDogs

In December, we lost our girl beagle to cancer, and we had to act fast because our boy beagle had lost his soulmate. We couldn't risk him being depressed because he's a twelve year old dog, and we were worried about his health too now, so when I asked the vet how long we should wait to adopt, he said "ten minutes ago"....So I started my search. We had always had beagles, but all I wanted was to save a dogs life because I hadn't been able to save Laura's, so I just wanted a healthy girl puppy that could get along with Skipper. I went to shelters all over Southern CA, and I kept coming back to the humane society. The second I spotted Isabel, I was able to hold her and find out if other people had a hold on her. The yard check happened within days, and we brought her home not even a week later. The staff was so helpful; I feel like I owe so much to them. We were so desperate to find the perfect puppy, and without all their help I don't think it would have happened. I'll never forget the lady Cheryl at the front desk; the first puppy we found had a hold, and she called the woman up right away to see if they were serious and yadda yadda yadda...she was so proactive and willing to help. The other lady who took us down to the kennels did the same with scanning the puppies and then introducing Isabel to Skipper to make sure they'd do well together. Everyone was so happy, and I could tell all the dogs there were so loved. It's so hard to go to a shelter and leave behind all the desperate faces. I don't live near Ojai, but I hope to volunteer at the Humane Society as much as possible as soon as my puppy isn't so needy of my time.

    Pros

quick addoption; got the job done; efficient

    Cons

I couldn't adopt all the animals!!

  • 5. Great care for my horses during Day Fire evacuations!

    by: dianajl

In the fall of 2006, the Day Fire threatened our community of Upper Ojai several times. We were notified that we were on evacuation orders and that all large livestock should be evacuated immediately at 2:00 AM. I called the Humane Society and within 15 minutes two voluteers arrived with a stock trailer. The wind was gusting and ashes were raining down. I was so nervous I could barely halter my 3 horses but the volunteers kept me calm and reassured me that at least my horses would be safe. They also told me my dog and cats would be welcome at the Humane Society if needed. Over a three week period the Humane Society of Ventura County took wonderful care of my horses. Because the fire continued to be a threat, they encouraged me to keep my horses with them where they were safe until the fire was under control. It was wonderful to know that my "Big Babies" were safe.

    Pros

Great caring staff, Very concerned about animal welfare!

    Cons

  • 6. the BEST!

    by: Gwyndolyn

We locals always call Ventura Humane Society when we find a lost pet or are missing one. They keep track of people who have lost pet. I've been able to return dogs to their homes with information they shared.:-) They gave me a me crate for my new puppy! Staff is helpful and knowledgeable. I have my dog's picture taken with their Santa Paws every year. Many of my neighbors have adopted dogs and cats from their shelter - they are a no kill facility and when every they have room, accept dogs from Pound, Katrina and out of the county. it's the first place I'd look if I wanted another pet.

    Cons

some classes still permit choke chains

  • 8. Ojai Shelter

    by: CynthiaA

I have used the Ojai shelter to find a pet, train my dog, get needed shots for my pets, and euthanize our old faithful dog Bronson.\r\n\r\n The staff was very helpful and accomodating while I looked for a cat. The cats all seemed healthy and I left with one I named Mickey. The shelter also works with local trainers to give dog training classes which have been especially helpful for our dog Gus. I also appreciate that they host the low cost clinic one a month in their parking lot where pet owners can get needed shots for their animals at reduced costs. And lastly when we needed to euthanize our old dog, they were very compassionate.\r\n\r\n This good work needs support to update and improve the facility!

    Pros

    Lots of pet support

    Cons

    Needs money to improve facility

  • 11. On Adopting the Perfect Kitten

    by: JudyWillett

Last year we adopted a beautiful kitten from a litter that was accepted by this shelter from a shelter in Oregon that could not care for them. She is now a year old and is healthy, sweet , and very loved. The Humane Society of Ventura County in Ojai has for years been THE place to go for unwanted animals.\r\nThey really need this makeover to make these pets more comfortable and maybe even enable them to take in more animals then they now can. The staff is wonderful and caring and I know they would appreciate this makeover with all their hearts!

    Pros

The perfect place to adopt a beautiful, healthy pet.

    Cons

    Absolutely none

I have a lot of fun working here. I like to bathe the animals and help customers. It makes my day when an animal goes home with their new parents. We all help each other and we're like a big family. It's my home away from home. Please help us win the million dollar makeover!

  • 18. A difficult job

    by: lindaloulou

I volunteer at this shelter and have for apprx 3 years. It has got to be one of the most difficult jobs. What they do day-in and day-out could wrench your heart right out of your chest, but...these people do their jobs with understanding and with grace. Along with the difficult times comes thankfulness for each and every dog and cat that has been placed in a home where they will be loved and cared for. Arleen, Cheryl, Suzanne, Rhonda and Daisey (she's the official greeter) always have a smile for the volunteers and a thank you. Becky gets the job done and done well. My personal thanks to you ladies. You make it happen! All points for this Humane Society shelter are appreciated and well deserved. Please help any way you can.

  • 19. This Shelter is Awesome

    by: Nattie

My friend and I visited the Humane Society every Wednesday for about two years, not as volunteers, but just to say hi and give the animals some love. It hasn't changed much, and it'd be nice if they could win the makeover! I'm in total support of them! The animals there are extremely well behaved, lovable, and well taken care of.

    Pros

I love that this shelter doesn't put animals to sleep even if they can't find homes for them. That makes me, and hopefully others feel that their pets are in a safe environment

  • 24. Public Outreach Program (Networking)

    by: kinkyturtle

I work with many animal shelters and human societies in California and one of my most favorite to wok with is the Ventura County Humane Society. They reach out and network with animal rescue organizations, treat animals very humanly, handle very difficult public situations with professionalism and have a dedicated staff. They have always been professional and never been rude. They are one of the most active Humane Societies I have encountered. There public outreach programs is excellent. They attending many local events each year and have a great presents with-in the community. They have an excellent Director that makes sound decisions and a highly qualified staff. I commend this group for their efforts.

    Pros

This is an excellent facility to adopt from. The staff is friendly and knowledgable. They attend many local event to educate the public.

    Cons

    None

  • 25. The best people, the best care and love for all of the animals ever.

    by: kjhinorbit

This shelter is run primarily by the Hoffman family and they truely care about all of the animals. They are dedicated professionals that have devoted their lives to making things better for Ojai and the surrounding areas. People do some horrible disgusting things to animals and actually has made them sick to their stomachs sometimes. That just shows me how much they care. They have given up sleep, money, health care and other niceities that they truely deserve and have done it for many, many years. I cannot say enough good things about them and the way they run the shelter. There just are not enough good words for these people.

    Pros

The most careing and knowledgeable staff of any Humane Society I have ever been to. These people are true pros!

    Cons

None that I can think of.

  • 26. The nicest shelter

    by: Scarlett70

The staff is very hard-working and their love of animals is obvious. They offer many services, especially for low-income households. They're great and I love them!

    Pros

Friendly and knowledgeable staff, great spay and neuter clinic

    Cons

Non-profit so there's not a lot of funds

  • 27. The Best Animal Shelter Ever!!!

    by: SweetSusie

This shelter is by far the best I've ever come across. It's in Ojai but serves ALL of Ventura County. They are no-kill, which is not something that all shelters can say and means that they give animals as long as it takes to find them the best homes possible. The staff is like a big, happy, welcoming family that smile and greet everyone the second they come through the front door. They have a low-cost and no-cost spay and neuter clinic three days a week, a low-cost shot clinic twice a month, a humane officer that goes out around the county and investigates animal abuse and neglect cases, a free humane education program for the schools and libraries, and a great volunteer program for animal lovers of all ages. Not to mention all the great animals for adoption there. They are sooo deserving of this makeover. Please vote for them!!!

    Pros

The friendliest, most knowledgeable, and most pet-lovingest staff you'll ever meet!

    Cons

The building is very old and run down, desperately needs remodeling.

  • 28. Investigations

    by: hof1man

The Humans Society of Ventura County takes the business of investigating animal abuse and cruelty very seriously. The investigations office used to get more than a thousand complaints a year. Because of the work the officers have done, the case load has dropped to less than half of that amount. \r\n\r\nHumane Society officers work closely with all law enforcement agencies in Ventura County to stop any form of animal abuse and neglect.\r\n

    Pros

    Professional

    Cons

    None

  • 29. Best Humane Society

    by: hthbala

I have adopted all of my animals from the Humane Society of Ventura County, and I would never go anywhere else. They have a free roaming cat room, and lots of dog runs for the dogs to get exercise and play with possible families. They are always quick to help people with spays and neuters. The staff is always friendly. It is a very well kept facility. I only recomend the Humane Society for adopting animals and for Spays & Neuters.

    Pros

    Great, Clean, Friendly Environment

    Cons

    None

  • 30. Best place to adopt an animal!

    by: MellyBelly

We've adopted our family dog, Vinnie, 10 years ago from this Humane Society, as well as my cat, about 7 months ago. It is, and will always be, my family and I's first choice to go to if we ever wanted to adopt an animal. The staff there are very helpful and informative, and the kennel manager there is EXTREMELY hard working. I love this place. :)

    Pros

Friendly service and the staff truly care about the animals.

    Cons

It really could use a makeover.
