For the size of the area and the amount of animals that come in the staff keep up to date on each of the animals, and if they are not sure will go get the info for you. The kennels are clean and the isles are clean, They run a top knotch operation with what they have. Keep up the great work!

    Pros

Staff is knowledgable, kind and willing to work with you

    by: KEYCOLLECT

Not sure why - but the director never seems to last more than a few months before getting fired. One even charged with embezzlement or something. But it does not seem to affect care of animals.

    Pros

    treat the animals well

    Cons

    administration problems

  • 6. A Heart of Gold!!

    by: JillAlbers

The Humane Society of the Black Hills is a wonderful facility. My daughter and I have been a volunteer there for 1 1/2 years and enjoy the time we spend there. The Staff is wonderful and they treat every animals they care for with compassion, joy, love and respect. Some of these animals have never known happiness until they were rescued and received the love they always deserved from the shelter staff and volunteers. This staff puts everything they have into caring for these animals and I feel they greatly deserve this make-over so they can continue to care for and provide better accommodations and educations for the animals and the public.

    Pros

The animals are very loved and well cared for.

    Cons

    Not enough room

  • 7. We need your help

    by: LaurieJ

Our facility and staff really do a great job of taking care of the animals they take in. Unfortunately there are needs for updating cages, isolating sick animals, etc. that would be met with a makeover ! If 95% of petowners would spay and neuter our shelters would sure be in better shape too.

    Pros

    clean, caring staff

    Cons

    old cages, no quarantine area

  • 8. our humane society really needs this makeover!!

    by: marmour

Because of budget cuts, our shelter no longer has the outdoor drop off cages for found strays. I understand the financial side, but what do we do when a hurt or dangerous stray is found and no one is around to answer the phone or help? On one such weekend, a stray dog wondered into my yard. I tried walking up and down the street and also drove around the neighborhood trying to find the owner. I left many, many messages with the shelter and animal control. Law enforcment was of no help either. Finally, on the first "open" day of bussiness, I took the dog into the shelter. Guess what, they knew the dog. He had been there before and wore no tags. Staff not very friendly. This dog was not friendly and bit my grandaughter pretty hard in the face without any warning or cause. He also attemped to bite others. I felt like I had to keep him contained in the yard until I could find someone, what if he attacked another child or worse? No one available for emergencies, no drop off boxes or weekend help. Boy do we ever need some resources for this shelter. No wonder people have been shooting strays, not a lot of choice given when dogs are chasing cattle or threatening children. They might also be more successful in finding homes for their animals if they would lower the adoption fees and attempt to work with the public.

    Pros

    a valuable service

    Cons

    not available when needed

    by: dakotahj

We looked for months for just the right "baby" to start our family with, but the minute we saw Buster we knew he was meant for us, and us for him. Even though he had a horrid background, he was healthy when we took him home. When we picked him up, it was like we were celebrated even though the staff deserved the real reward. We knew he had been cared for when everyone we mentioned him to knew him, and all said they were going to miss him. Without people like this, he would have been left on the side of the highway where he was found. Please, I beg you, don't let this facility get buried under beaurocratic red tape and a community with little money. Help save future family members!

    Pros

Some of the greatest people you will ever meet in this business!

    Cons

The building needs more help then the community itself can give

  • 12. Need more space

    by: pearlruby

Our Humane society is a very small shelter in a very large area. They have worked very hard to improve their space but they need more. In Western South Dakota domestic pets are still considered livestock. Many animals are desposed of every day because people do not understand what the Humane Society can provide. Our shelter is in dire need of a quarantine area. Please help us

    Pros

Trying their best with what they have

    Cons

    need more space

  • 13. My home away from home!

    by: HowlerTabby

I've never really worked in a location where the entire staff pulls together as a whole and moves forward no matter what obstacles they come across. For me, this job is exactly what I've always wanted. My supervisors are amazing people who understand any issue or any concern I have, and the rest of the crew (both the front staff and the back) are all amazing individuals. It really just takes your breath away to see so many great people pull together for such a great cause. Even before I found employment at the HSBH, I've always loved the people involved. I found all of my dogs at the shelter, with wagging tails and bright eyes. The staff have always been very pleasant people to associate with, and any concern or confusion on my part, has always been addressed with no problems at all! I owe everyone involved so much, for helping me find my 'kids' (as I put it ^^), as well as a great job. Keep up the awesome work guys! We -will- make this shelter an even greater place in the future~!

    Pros

    Amazing staff

    Cons

Wish we had a little more room...

    by: harleyNrodeo

We did not adopt our dogs from the Humane Society of the Black Hills, but we did get their licenses there and also got a chip put in one of the dogs and plan to get the other one chipped there. The staff is kind and helpful and they know what they're doing. We've also dropped off a couple of strays that found their way onto our property and the staff was helpful with that.

    Pros

    Experience and willingness to help

    Cons

    Don't open early.

  • 16. This is where I got my Tippy Ann

  • 17. Best job I have ever had

    by: mischalynn

This is an amazing place to work. There is so much work to do. The bad stuff makes it very hard, but one good thing can make ten bad things worth it. I love knowing I have an oppurtunity to make a difference every day. Even if it happens to be small.

    Pros

Knowing I am making a difference every day

    Cons

    The horrible stuff I see

  • 18. HSBH Rocks!!!

    by: blackpanther22

The Humane Society of the Black \r\nHills is a wonderful place. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly and do an excellent job keeping the place clean.

    Pros

    They have lots of volunteers

    Cons

    NEEDS A MAKEOVER!!

  • 19. As a volunteer....

    by: youresomoney

As a volunteer I get to see how united the staff and volunteers become and how caring everyone is about the animals this shelter intakes. I come every weekend to help out and it's a great atmosphere to be a part of.

    Pros

    Moral of staff and volunteers

    Cons

Shelter needs to be much bigger to accommodate the animals, staff, and volunteers.

  • 20. HSBH should win!

    by: Galataya16

We have such amazing staff and volunteers at the Humane Society! They are very kind and very knowledgeable. No matter what the situation they can anticipate what is needed and get it taken care of. Although the shelter is small and full most of time they do such wonderful things for the animals and try to make sure everything is clean and taken care of for them which should be and is the number one priority. They also help owners with animals out with microchipping and other services but have limited space to do so. They really need a better facility maybe with a better lobby and/or waiting room for people while they are waiting. I know they also try and make sure that the animal is going to go to a loving home and that they will be cared for. Its great to see people doing what needs to be done for the benefit of the animals. We need more people like that in the world. They could desperatly use the makeover!

    Pros

friendly staff, very clean for being a shelter

    Cons

needs some work and needs to be bigger

  • 21. Great group

Overall great facility. I saw them on the local news today at noon with Betsy, the yellow lab. I am impressed with the Executive Director and wish them the best. I really hope they win!!

    Pros

Clean, everyone cares for the animals tremendously

    Cons

Dogs could be walked more often and given individual love

    by: bl0ndeeo2

a few years ago, i adopted a cat from the BHHS. i took the cat to the vet, and it was really sick, with kennel cough and who knows what else. i went back to the BHHS and told them about it, and they let me pick out another animal in return of the cat. i was sad to do it, but at the same time, i had to do what i could afford. i thought that it was nice that they let me do that. thanks.\n\n

  • 24. South Dakota animal friends

    by: pauladem

The Humane Society of the Black Hills faces the same problem many shelters face.....too many unwanted, unneutered pets, illness, and lack of funding. Wouldn't it be a wonderful day when every animal finds a loving home? The shelter has a new director who is doing her best to do just that. Please help.

    Pros

The staff is very compassionate and hard-working.

    Cons

Facility needs updating. Too many animals to be adopted.

  • 25. New director of the HSBH

    by: Butterfly1

I feel that the new director of the HSBH is very motivated and has great ideas. Her agenda seems to have the animals best interests in mind. In my opinion that is what it should be all about, the animals quality of life and care until they can find their forever home. I look forward to seeing what kind of changes she will be making.

    Pros

Ensure all pets are altered and vaccinated before leaving the shelter

    Cons

There are lots of animals and a space shortage.

  • 26. We Need Your Help!!

    by: lewsbaby

Despite the fact that we DESPARATELY need a new shelter, the staff and volunteers are awesome, and the care the animals receive is second to none. \r\nOur facility is far to small to accomodate our needs, and badly needs an upgrade in equipment, and environment. They do the best they can with what they've got, but its not enough. BHHS is outdated in nearly every way imaginable. Size, available room for care of the animals, drab appearance..... We could do so much more with a bigger, better facility. When you go in, the staff & volunteers are very friendly, but visually, it is not an attractive place, and not condusive to a "happy" place. A place that you go to find a lost, or a new pet - both happy occasions in one's life, deserve to have a colorful, eye-catching appearance to add to ones experience. \r\nI got my youngest dog there about 8 months ago, and she'd been a wonderful addition to my household. It's a really good thing that I had an idea what I wanted/needed in order to avoid my older dog losing his "alpha" status. If I hadn't gone in with a plan, I'm not sure how I would have chosen one!! \r\nPenny seemed to fit the bill. I walked around all the kennels, and looked at many different dogs, but was very attracted to her. She was really cute, but very sedate, unlike many of the dogs there. She would come to the gate if I called her over, but was far from being excited and rambunctious. She was 3 years old, according to the info card, so not a "cute little puppy". I asked one of the staff if I could take her into the visitation room and spend some time with her, which we did. She was rather aloof, and still sedate, but I was still very attracted to her. I had already decided to take her home, so it wasn't an impulsive decision based on sympathy, but when the staff person told me that she'd been there for about a month and I was only the 2nd person to even ask to visit with her......well, my heart melted, and that was the clincher. So, the next day I brought my older dog, Jake, in to meet her. They largely ignored one another, but no hostitlity, so home she came. Other that the first two days or so, when Jake felt he had to reinforce the fact that he was, indeed, the alpha dog, they've gotten along wonderfully well. Jake is much more active and playful, and Penny is no longer anywhere near what one would term as "sedate". She's very happy and playful. She even tries to engage the cats in play from time to time, which they do not always take very kindly to!! Never again will I look in the newspaper for a "free puppy". Any time in the future that I choose to add another member to my family, it will be from the wonderful people at BHHS. Kudos to all of you!!!\r\n

    Pros

Wonderful, caring staff; animals are well cared for

    Cons

Way too small. We desparately need more room and updated facilities

  • 27. Makeover Madness

    by: stephwaters

My family and I visited the shelter soon after we were stationed here. The staff was great and love what they do, but it was obvious that the shelter needed help. If I were to choose one shelter that I have ever been to or affiliated with to recieve help it would be the Black Hills. I hope that you consider helping this shelter get the help they need to go with the loving staff that volunteer and work there.

    Pros

The friendly staff and quality of love they have for the animals in their care.

    Cons

The facility is in much need of a face lift, although the staff is great the facility could use some help.

We started working with the HSBH as foster parents. We take any dogs that need help. So far have foster 28 different dogs, from a mother with 9 puppies to three puppies that were just three weeks old. We like the people we work with and the help we get from them. • 33. Make Over Much needed

    by: cprzer

I have lived in Rapid City most of my life. As a small child the Humane Society was the pound as we did not have a HS. Over the years with the help of the community we were able to build a bigger shelter. However, there is lots of things that the shelter needs.\r\n\r\nI went to a shelter in MN. The Hennipen County HS shelter. This is what I would like to see in Rapid City. \r\n\r\nA facility were they can properly contain new arrivals and quarantine them. \r\n\r\nVentilation-needs improvement. Currently when you walk into the facility it smells of odors. These odors give the impression the faciltiy is dirty.\r\n\r\nMore Space-Black Hills Humane Society sees or should have has over 7000 animals per year and this is growing. these were 2006 information.\r\n\r\nBlack hills has rooms that isolate cats from dogs but it could be so much better. \r\n\r\nthe facility is boring gray and white not sure why those colors but that definatly needs to change.\r\n\r\nIt would be nice to have a veterinarian on staff fulltime at the facility but even to gain one of those we would need a better facility with a surgical suite and immunzantion center and a small pharmacy to help treat the pets in a timely manner.\r\n\r\nIt would be nice to have an educationaly area as well for training on kennels, housetraining and behavior training.\r\n\r\nGranted this all takes time and money but our community had a faclity that smelled good and proper quarantine areas and air exchange, we maybe able to bring on a fulltime or partime veterinarian to care for these pets on a regular basis.\r\n\r\nI would love to be on the board of directors but I am not sure how to get to that point. I have over 20 years in veterinary medicine as a Practice manager and I see so much potential for our local Humane Society but we sure do need a new facility.

    Pros

Place for Incoming animals in our Black hills area

    Cons

Facility does not meet the needs of animals

  • 34. The Best Shelter

    by: jlilangel

My fiance and I recently lost our cat, Louis. He got outside one night and never came home. We went to the shelter twice a week for a month to look for him. After two visits the staff there new us on site and new which kitties they had that could be ours. Unfortunately, we didn't find him. When we decided we were ready to adopt a new kitten, the people at the shelter were really excited for us and showed us the perfect picks! After 30 minutes (and a lot of hemming and hawing) we decided on Jasper, a 2 month old gray short hair. We still stop in about once a month to see if Louis has been found, and they still know who we are and ask about our newest kitty.

    Pros

    Friendly, helpful employees

    Cons

Not a lot of room for the animals

  • 35. yay!!!!

  • 36. Deserving of any help

    by: dspetersonak

I have only visited the black hills animal shelter once. As a spouse of a military member we move quite often, and take all of our pets with us each time. My oldest cat, Pumpkin, is a rescue cat and he is the greatest cat I have ever had. Its true when they say that animals KNOW. My other two cats I saved from being taken to the shelter. \r\n\r\nI think the Humane Society of the Black Hills needs this more than anything. The building is small and they are only able to serve a certain amount of animals. I come from a larger town, and as such a larger shelter. The area that they have for outside romps for the dogs is a joke and they need to expand the area. \r\n\r\nThe new director is trying her hardest to get community support, and is doing a fantastic job so far. This would only further help out our animal shelter in good ways!

    Pros

    The good work they do

    Cons

    staff

  • 37. Wonderful!

    by: iceblackrose

The staff and volunteers really care about the animals. As soon as you walk though the door you can see that it is a loving animal environment. The animals are clean and the facility is too. I just wish they had a newer facility because it is old and needs repairs.

    Pros

The facility is clean and the animals are all loved and well cared for

    Cons

The building is old and really needs to be fixed up so they can give even better care to the animals

All three of my adopted pets, Clancy, Seamus and Bailey have all come from the Humane Society of the Black Hills. It is the best shelter I have ever worked with. • 42. Lifelong pet

    by: briarwood

In 1989 I walked through the shelter and found the dog of my dreams - literally. I was just curious, but the nose that pushed between the wall and the gate would not leave my mind. I called my husband the next day and he agreed to meet me at the shelter. We fell in love with the beautiful springer spaniel who stole our hearts. When I got her home and gave her a bath, black hair clogged my drain reminding me of the dream I had two weeks prior - a deja vu dream about the same moment in time that I did not recall until actually clearing out the drain! \r\n\r\nMany people would have ruled us out as candidates - young, newly married, in the military, no children. But the organization was wonderful to work with and we had Brittany with us for the next 14 years as our only child. That dog had my heart and soul and we couldn't have asked for a better companion to travel all over the United States with us. \r\n\r\nI will always be greatful to you for helping her find a home, for keeping her 9 days when the average stay was 6, for trusting us with her, and for agreeing to a 2-week trial period if it didn't work out (I was nervous and trying to also keep my husband happy).

    Pros

    Easy to work with

    Cons

    none noted
