  • 1. A wonderful Experience

    by: Stephany71

I adopted my dog, Caramel, from the Shelter back in August and it's the best thing I've ever done. She is absolutely the best dog ever as are most shelter dogs. The staff was caring and considerate, willing to answer questions and they do their utmost best to place the animals in the best home possible. When I'm ready for a new family member, I will be going back to the Shelter. It's sad to see so many unwanted animals due to human irresponsiblity. The Shelter offers all kinds of educational information and assistance to help people be responsible. They are a great resource.

    Pros

Concerned about the animals, friendly, educated, honest

    Cons

Application process is slow, but I would guess due to volume

  • 2. Really active group

    by: blacksheep

I have so much loyality to this shelter. They were responsible for the 1000 dog rescue at the Puppy mill in Aug 08 and that is where my little Ginny came from. With two wonderful shelters so close to each other Pburg and Marietta are only 10 mins apart. We need this so bad in this area and both are so deserving.

    Pros

    Very well run facility

    Cons

In Competition with Washing co ohio group urgh

  • 4. Not Impressed!

    by: anonymous24

I'm NOT impressed with the HSOP at all. My cat Ariel was adopted from the HSOP as an office cat. There was no backround check done on the person that adopted her and she was not taken care of! Luckily I had a friend that worked in that office and she introduced Ariel to our family. We fell in love right away! The HSOP claims that any animal that passes through their shelter must be fixed, they recieve vet care, and they claim to do a backround check. Well all of the above were wrong in Ariel's case. Ariel had worms when she left there - so appearantly she was not checked by a vet! Ariel was not fixed it cost my husband and I a good $70. When I contacted the HSOP they swore up and down that it wasn't possible and that she probally just had a urinary tract infection. Trust me we took her to the vet and had her belly shaved and just to be sure she was tested for a UTI...the only problem was she HAD NOT been fixed and yes I have papers from our vet verifying that we had taken her and done what any responsible pet owner should do! I also asked the HSOP for any records they had on Ariel...you know so we could have a better understanding of what treatment/care that she had while in there care- surprise surprise they don't keep track of the animals that come through there. I found that odd considering isn't this how they get their statistics? Sounds funny to me... they're out there begging for help and donations all the time, yet they don't give their animals vet care, they don't fix them, and they don't keep any records of the animals. So how do we know what our money is really going on? When you walk into the place its NASTY for any human or animal!!! I know one of the volunteers there and I know that she gets food for her own animals from the HSOP. Mind you they're not fostered animals, but her own family pets. Why should we give money or food to them if the employees and volunteers are just going to take it for their own pets or use??? \r\nOn to another reason I'm NOT impressed with the HSOP. About 3 months ago HSOP had a little viewing thing set up at the Grandcentral Mall. I stopped and fell in love with one of the cats. This cat was 6 years old, she was in great health, and had only been in their care for about a week. She was taken to them because her previous owners had gotten a divorce and decided that neither of them wanted her. Noone else showed any interest in her so I filled out an application for my supposed "backround report" and I waited. About a month had passed and I heard nothing about her. So I went into the office and asked if she was still available..I was told that she had been adopted. Later that same day my husband recieved a phone call from HSOP concerning the cat, and he was told that they could not find our vet and that the cat had been put to sleep. I don't know why they couldn't find our vet considering it's pretty well known, also how hard is it to find The Parkersburg Vet when I gave them the address and phone number on the application. And I don't know why we were told two different things. My personal oppinion about the HSOP is that they're a bunch of scandlers and liers. They beg for help for these "homeless" animals, yet use if for their own personal use and pets. I'm all for helping animals that need it and anyone thats honest about helping animals, but I will NEVER again adopt from the HSOP nor help them in any way. I'm so glad that we have Ariel now, I'm surprised that they didn't put her to sleep when they had her considering she's 7 years old...instead they neglected her. \r\n\r\nNow I don't care if anyone else agree's with me, because this is MY opinion and yes we are all entitled to one! Hopefully those of you that "love" the HSOP are honest and maybe this will encourage you to check into where your donation is really going and what kind of health care your animal really recieved from them! Oh yea and to the HSOP... you might want to watch your employee's and volunteers a little more closely!

  • 6. The best pets

    by: vella40

I found the people at this shelter to be very helpful. You can tell they really care for the animals they take in. I got Toby from here almost 13 years ago (his Mother was there really sick with heartworms. They weren't sure the puppies would even be delivered but they were and Toby was one of them). Then last year I moved to the country and went to another shelter, wasn't happy with it. I went back to the Parkersburg shelter and got Gracie, a plott hound dog. Every body there was caring and helpful.

    Pros

Friendly, clean and very helpful staff

    Cons

  • 7. Amazing Shelter!

    by: vocalsgsc

The staff and volunteers at the Parkersburg Humane Society care about every animal not only the ones that come through the doors of the shelter. I was at an event this weekend and while at the event staff saw a cat walking in the park and they wanted to take the cat go get it neutered and then bring it back to it's owners. I was very impressed by tis as they did not have to think twice about this kitty. These are the typ of things that I have seen in the staff many times. Recently there was a Puppy Mill seizure and everyone involved become personally involved with every animal. Many still speak about specific dogs that were involved and several staff and volunteers took puppy mills dogs home to ensure they had a great remainder of their lives. Keep it going Parkersburg!!!

    Pros

Great advocates for animals, cleanliness of facility, review of applicants to ensure safety of placement for animals in shelter, training of both staff and volenteers.

    Cons

Needing more publicity, a bigger facility, offering more community assistance for private pets.

  • 8. Did a great job handling a Puppy Mill Bust

    by: GinaS12345

I haven't been back to see the animals, but I have only heard good things about this place. I stopped in to make a donation after the recent puppymill bust. The staff was great, friendly and helpful to everyone in the waiting area. From what I followed in the paper and heard on the news I thought they handled the bust very well.

    Pros

    Good Location

    Cons

Tight parking when it is crowded

  • 10. Parkersburg Humane Society

    by: knf14

The Humane Society of Pakersburg is the best you can get. My dog Charlie, was there 12 times because he kept escaping from his olld owners. My dad found him at his work and took him in. The Humane Society wouldn't let his old owners keep him, when my dad heard that, he went straight to go get him. So know he's ours and no one else will get him.....I am so glad the Humane society of Parkersburg was there to help Charlie and take him away from his old owners and give him to us.!! YAY.!

    Pros

    Its a great place.!

  • 12. Friends and Caregivers

    by: Rozann

I have gotten almost all of my cats from the Parkersburg Humane Society. I am over fifty and I have had many animals in the past. I always go here to find my loved ones. The HSOP is a clean home for the animals and has lots of support from the community. If I am going to make a donation it is going to be for the animals. The staff are kind and considerate and very caring people and there are many volunteers that dedicate themselves to the caring of the animals. Thank God for these people. The only problem I have is actually going in to the HSOP because I want to take all of them home. I hate leaving and I cry everytime I do. If I ever "hit the lottery" I would care for the animals first before anything else.

    Pros

    Caring, Kind and Clean

    Cons

I want to take all of the animals home when I go in.

  • 19. Volunteering

    by: jmmpuppy

I volunteer at The Humane Society of Parkersburg and every time I walk into their building, I feel as though I am walking into a room full of helpful, caring, and loving people who care about animals. They have an organized book of all the volunteers' time that they've spent working with the animals. Everything is easy to use and to understand. They do have a policy about adopting: if more than one person wants the animal, the person who they see is most fit to take care of the animal, gets it. \n Their main goal is to help each and every animal find a loving home, and that is what they are doing. They even suggest food for your pet and they have a selection of toys, collars, and leashes for you to get when you pick up your pet. \n It is a small building, and they need more space, but they manage. The kennel space is getting smaller, and the amount of animals they get is getting larger. The Humane Society of Parkersburg truly needs the money.

    Pros

animals are taken care of very well, clean, organized

    Cons

    not enough space

I live in marietta, ohio, and my dog was stolen from me, and later found in wood county west virgina. My dog was stolen approx. 8 months ago, and has apparently turned wild.I see him almost everyday, but he seems very scared, so i was told i needed to set a trap for him.At the time I was working for the Humane Society in Marietta,OHio,and they knew my situation, they loaned me a trap, but never showed me how to set it up or anything, one of the employees set the trap for me,but never showed me how to set it.it was used only for approx 3 days.A racoon got in the trap & i have never dealt with wild animals, so the humane officer went out let the racoon out of the trap, and took their trap back, not caring about my dog.... So i went to the Parkersburg Humane Society, These people were really really helpful. I told them my situation, and they were very eager to help, They loaned me a trap, with no time limit to return the trap, they also were very understanding and caring of my situation. Their humane society although very small, was very clean, My wife had told me even the dogs smell really clean, she thought that they must give those dogs baths everyday. The Parkersburg Humane Society should be granted this reward, for the simple fact that no matter how small a place is, or how old a place may be, it can still be clean. They show that they care for their aniamls,as well as the people that they come in contact with, It is a very clean and professional environment. They have been very helpful and wonderful people, \r\n\r\n With many thanks and praises\r\n Kevin"ZEUS" Lutchmansingh

  • 22. proud of our shelter

    by: dhines

I have to say I am very proud of our shelter. I have been involved with them for almost 14 years and I have to say we have come a long way. We are saving the lives of more animals through adoptions and rescues. The shelter staff works really hard to keep the building clean and the animals healthy and clean. What our shelter needs more than anything is a spay/neuter clinic so we can begin to end the over population of dogs and cats in our community. Lets all band together and get this done. I am impressed on how many people of our community spent hours after hours on Zootoo for the past several months. I thank each and everyone of you.....

    by: SharonLinch

Well, less than an hour to go on the zootoo contest.\r\nIt's been a real learning experience on so many levels.\r\nI always knew our community was strong and caring\r\nand whatever the end results that strength was shown tonight. I feel like I have already met many of the Parkersburg Shelter's staff. We've traded the ups and downs of this adventure for a while now. We have spent countless hours trying to do what we can to help animals and each other. \r\n Fourteen years ago and a time or two before that\r\nwe got our Sunny at the Parkersburg Shelter. I can\r\nstill remember how tiny she was and how she was the last in her litter to get a home. I thought how\r\nalone she looked and never ever regretted a moment\r\nof taking her to be part of our family. The Parkersburg Shelter has grown more and more important in our community and I believe that the people recognize that. Thank you for the hard and continued work. As promised by adding myself as\r\na volunteer, a batch of homemade doggie biscuits\r\nwill be delivered in a day or two. THANK YOU!!\r\n

    by: Jessie2147

Everytime I find a stray dog or cat (or rabbit) I end up calling the HSoP. I try first the tags on the pets, but if I am out and about and pick up an animal, they are always willing to take the animal in and find it's owner or a willing foster parent. They have never turned me away and usually are thankful that they didn't have to send off their already busy officer and that there is another animal off the street.

    by: ZachS

I've adopted from this shelter before, and they're great if you're taking an animal home. But I brought in a small dog I found along a VERY BUSY stretch of highway by my house. I got a very nasty attitude from the workers because I brought her there. I couldn't keep her because we already have a dog. I almost felt like they were put off because of it. I didn't want to just let the dog run and risk her getting hit by a car. I was very disappointed in the service I received that day. I would adopt from this shelter again. And I plan on getting a shelter dog for my next pet. I just wish they would understand that people do bring animals in for legitimate reasons, not just to dump them off.

    Pros

    Good to the animals

    Cons

Don't like it when you bring an animal in.

  • 41. We adopted 6 of our 7 animals here

    by: amma1254

Went to our local shelter last week twice, once with my grandson to check out a dog found on their website. We were so impressed to find on this rainy, cold day that people were there taking the dogs for outdoor walks, they were cleaning the holding areas, and taking time to just talk to the many adult cats. \r\n\r\nWe fell in love with this great German Shepherd mix, and the next day my husband, and two other grandaughters went back to see her. The staff were great about letting us put on a leash and take her for a walk. There was a new fenced in area we used to let her off the leash and just play with her!! We had a terrific time and she loved my grandchildren!!\r\nGuess who is coming home with us this week?? Catie (her new name) will be spayed and we will be able to bring her home on Tuesday. \r\nEveryone at the shelter was so helpful in our adoption and we were impressed with the excellent care provided the many animals there.\r\n GREAT JOB. • 46. Parkersburg Human Society Rocks!

    by: jkordell

My family and I have lived in Parkersburg for almost 25 years. For all of those years we have been dog lovers. All but one of our family pets have come from our local humane society. Our family has been greatly blessed by each one. First a little background, the facility is near the local plants and the river so it's not exactly the most attractive place. I have always imagined that in the distant past it was put there by the city fathers so that the animals wouldn't bother anyone - sort "out of sight out of mind". Despite their poor physical circumstances the staff/management of the facility works hard to help the animals. The facility is well managed and the animals are well cared for. The Humane Society conducts adoption fairs at the local mall and they go out of their way to locate homes for new arrivals. I have been told that one of the facility regulars donates all of her disposable personal income to keeping the place running and meeting the animals' needs. The dogs that my family adopted had all been fed, walked and played with regularly. The staff got to know them really well and were careful to match us up with animals of the right temperment. After we adopted the animals the staff contacted us repeatedly to make sure that everyone was doing well - both the dog and me! The facility has been there for us during the sad times too. Over the almost 25 years we have had a number of pets pass away. The Parkerburg Humane society was helpful and sensitive in cremating our dog Mike a couple of years ago. He was a great friend and they took care of the whole thing and relieved us of that difficult task. Shortly thereafter they introduced us to Daisy - a "little" Great Dane. She is now a full member of the family. Many of my associates at work have adopted pets from the facility. I have both overheard and personally benefitted from advice and counseling about pet topics offered by the staff. I think that one of them would definitely qualify as the mid Ohio Valley's "Dog Whisperer". I just wish that I were rich and could give them enough money to update and improve their facility. Over the years we have donated some money and food. And, our daughter volunteered there for a while until she had to go off to school. But, they need more money than any one person can give. I have recently heard that the city of Parkersburg has been trying to cut the amount that they pay the Humane Society to perform animal control services. If that happens I know that the organization will be stretched even thinner. It would be such a miracle if they could win the makeover. However that works out, I just wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to the group for all of their hard work and the major contribution that they have made to the lives of both the human and canine members of our family.

    Pros

The people involved are all deeply committed to the animals!

    Cons

The facility doesn't have enough money to meet all of the needs that the staff has recognized

    by: joriddle

I had a stray dog wander into my yard two days ago without any ID other than the dog license tag. After calling the tax office and getting a number for who they had listed as the owner,(though he lived 20 miles away from me) and calling said owner with no luck, I took the dog to the HSOP for help. They checked their own books and found that the person registered with this tag was someone that lived just around the block from me! This made much more sense, and I was able to return the cute little beagle to his home! Thanks for your care and help! Apparently the new owner had adopted her from our shelter. I hope everyone will make sure their dogs have proper ID on them!

  • 50. Great place to get a dog

    by: HappyNancy

I have adopted two dogs from this facility...no problem with Abby, she was a puppy. Charlie a Boxer was said to be 8 years old...took him to my vet for a check up and he said Charlie was more like 12. I had Charlie 7 weeks and one day. He had a stroke and I had to do the humane thing and put him down. I know that was not the fault of the facility. I loved Charlie so much, he was the most amazing dog I have ever seen. I learned so much in those few weeks and when I called the facility they were very sorry! I would adopt from there again in a heart beat.

    Pros

You can tell the staff really cares for the animals

    Cons

I am not sure of who the vet is that cares for the animals but they might want to consult another one.

  • 51. Wonderful place

    by: sfsanders

This is such a wonderful shelter. The staff is very supportive and knowledgable about animals. They are always willing to help anyone with a problem. I have adopted 4 animals from this shelter. I have fostered hundreds of cats and several dogs. I volunteer practically everyday. What they need is money to add a strictly cat area to the shelter so the cats and puppies don't have to share the same area.

    Pros

    Hard working staff

    Cons

    limited funds

  • 52. Doing a great Job !

I adopted my first pet from this shelter in 1980. Over the years I have adopted 3 other pets. Each time I visited the shelter to add to my animal family, the staff was friendly and very helpful. All of the animals were clean and very well cared for. They do a great job providing TLC to the many displaced pets waiting for a loving home. This shelter should be the winner of the make over !\r\n\r\n\r\n

  • 53. Wonderful Caring Shelter

    by: ryan0303

I adopted my dog, Bella from HSOP. She is a wonderful dog. This shelter is very clean and the staff and volunteers love all of the animals unconditionally. Bella had been socialized well. She was housebroken and walks well on a leash. It is sad to see these devoted people trying so hard to do all that they want to do for the animals in their outdated facility. They have to use their kitchen/break room to draw blood and do testing and their lobby is really a multi-purpose room. Even with these problems to overcome they do a great job.

    Pros

    they do a terrific job

    Cons

    they need more room!

  • 54. Molly

    by: justgrandma

When I was a child, we always had a dog. Then when I had children and a house of my own, we always had a dog. Now that my children are grown and my husband and I ramble through the house, we are never lonely because we always have a dog. All my precious pets that have honored my family with their love & devotion, have been adopted. Some found our house on their own, others picked us out when we visited the Wood County Humane Society in Parkersburg, WV.\n\n7 years ago I saw in the newspaper this beautiful dog with soulful eyes just begging me to come get her. I quit work early that day to get to the Humane Society just so I could bring that little girl home with me. Imagine my disappointment when I walked in the building and there was a lady holding her and signing the adoption papers. I started to turn around and walk out, but something made me go back to the area reserved for the older dogs. The 3rd pen I came to held this mixed collie/german shepard sweetheart with big brown eyes. I coaxed her to the front of the pen where she gently licked my finger. I told her I would be back, and understanding me, she sat and quietly waited. I walked around the entire area looking at the other dogs. By the time I got back to her, every dog in the holding area was barking. Every dog except Molly. She sat patiently waiting……..for me. I walked out with her that night, after the employees at the Humane Society followed up on my references. \n\nOn the way home, Molly sat in the front passenger seat as if she knew this was going to be permanent and this was her spot. We discussed our future together and arrived at the agreement that if she promised not to mess in the house, I promised to walk her twice a day. In the 7 years we’ve been together, both of us have upheld our promises. She is my exercise trainer. On the wet, cold, or snowy days when I would rather stay in bed, she pokes me ever so gently to remind me that I had a promise to keep, and I better hustle up if I wanted her to keep her promise to me. \n\nOur Humane Society in Parkersburg, WV employs dedicated, animal loving people who search for similar people to care for the animals they house. For our area to be part of the winners in the ZOOTOO, would be wonderful. It would be a show of support for those kind hearted, big eyed strays just waiting for a good home. \n\nThank you\nMarlene Sheridan\nParkersburg, WV 26101\n

    Pros

  • 58. In search of a forever home

    by: Iluvpappion

I have been a supporter for many years by giving money and supplies but July 2002 I became a volunteer/foster mom. I have always had a soft spot for animals but didn't really think I could do more that give a few dollars when I thought about it. I met the most wonderful little boy named Bruiser, a Rotty, he came to my house one Sunday afternoon when we were enjoying some outside fun as a family. Well he stayed and we tried to ask around to see who he belonged to and nobody seemed to know. So he spent the night. I took him to the Humane Society the next day but couldn't bear to leave him so I agreed to care for him while we found him a home. He stayed 8 weeks before his dreams of a loving family came to be. That was my first experience with fostering and I have fostered 87 animals since. I now know I can do more than give money, which I still do but I can make a small difference in these helpless animals lives for a period of time until they are lucky enough to find a family. I have many wonderful friends at the Humane Society ( 2 legged and 4 legged) Thanks to the great staff for all their hard work giving every day.\n\n\n\n\n

    Pros

The staff are always very helpful and they love animals

    Cons

  • 59. Great shelter--Great staff

    by: koala58

This is a great shelter to have in our area. The staff is there first for the animals and their welfare, then they will help you find the right pet for you. They take the time to listen to what you want in a pet and try to pair you up with the right one.

    Pros

I have adopted several animals from this shelter and have never been disappointed in the information they have given me or the pets I have gotten. The staff takes time out of their hectic work load to answer your questions or to help in anyway they can. You need to stop by and visit this great group of people

    Cons

    none

  • 60. Love this place!

    by: smileygirl

This shelter has a great volunteer base that allows them to care for more animals than they can house. They have many animals in foster care and also transport several animals to shelters in other states. They have always supported me as a foster parent and given me what I needed to make sure my foster pets are healthy and happy. They provide many ways to find my foster pets homes, via rescues and adoptathons, and internet. So I never feel like I'm "stuck" with an animal. \r\n\r\nThe staff truly has a heart for helping animals. They know them each by name and work with the animals to make them more adoptable if the animals have any issues or behavior problems.

    Pros

They truly love the animals in their care, have community support

    Cons

not enough hands to take care of all they want to

This shelter works hard to provide good care for the many animals that they are trying to place. The staff is very knowledgable and passionate about what they are doing.\r\n\r\nUnfortunately, they are limited by funding and working against the same problems as shelters nationwide - a growing population of unwanted pets that need good homes.

They are so loving to every creature that comes in. They make volunteering enjoyable. Although I haven't adopted from them I have recommended many others - because our Humane Society is trustworthy. And having seen many many Shelters - ours is one of the nicest I've seen. The pets that get placed because of the shelter are truly blessed and the workers are a godsend.

Our family has been blessed to adopt pets from HSOP--most recently our lovely dog, Lilly. The staff was always helpful and caring. We have called upon them when we were able to make room for another pet. But they don't just say okay, take one home. They do check you out, make sure the pet is going to a loving home, and do a follow up for spay and neuter. This is so very important. Our family supports this shelter when we can and praise the wonderful patience of all the staff and volunteers. Respect all of the wonderful HSOP workers!

    by: ztT4MP88554898

Our area school districts have benefitted by inviting staff members from the Parkersburg Humane Society into the elementary classrooms. They discussed pet overpopulation and what should be done to prevent this problem. The staff also discussed proper pet care and the responsibility involved with being a pet owner. The presenters definitely LOVE animals and have a great deal of knowledge to share with our community. The children were given flyers that contained important information that could be discussed with their parents. I know some of my students ended up adopting pets from this shelter. The third graders discussed the pet care presentations for weeks. We even wrote paragraphs about their favorite pet stories! We truly appreciate our area shelter!

I really like going to the Humane Society of Parkersburg, it's just 30 minutes away from my town's shelter (the humane society of the ohio valley). It's always clean and they are always busy doing what they can to keep it that way. It's nice to see actually, there have been a few shelters that I've visited that reek, but you won't find that here!\r\n\r\nMost of the time the staff is really friendly and willing to help, but every now and then you get a "bad egg" but where don't you anymore!!\r\n\r\nI have not personally adopted from this shelter but it would be one of the first places that I would look if I was able to! Last year, I wanted to add another dog to our household. Unless someone gives me a dog, I get my dogs at the shelter and this time would be no exception. I knew what I was looking for and dropped off my info. at the shelter one day and was called AND EMAILED PICTURES of the cutest dog in the world 24 HOURS later! They had listened to me and matched me up with the perfect dog and I was instantly in love (as was my mother and grandmother who live with me). They are the greatest. I always see people with the animals there. The cages are clean. They are such advocates for the animals and clearly want them in good homes. I thank them for the cutest, sweetest "baby" I could ever have imagined.

Thanks to everyone at the Humane Society for helping us find these great dogs and allowing them into our home. The staff helped us find 3 kid-friendly, kind, loving dogs, and they are a perfect fit.

    by: PoochProtector

The Staff at Parkersburg have been a wonderul shelter to work with. I have a small dog rescue and they have worked with me for 5 years now placing dogs. We have placed so many wonderful animals that would have never had the chance to have that *Happy Ending* if it werent for them. Kudos to all of you and if I could have one wish it would be for them to win a new shelter. They deserve it. The homeless animals deserve it. I have never worked with a shelter that has gone above and beyond the call of duty as they have. My rescue is in Pittsburgh PA and they are in Parkersburg WV and they help with transports and vetting. All my adopters are voting for them also.

  • 91. HSOP -Huge Success of Placement

    by: manxmamma

I could not find any Manx cat or kitten in my area, so I went to Petfinder.com. After many months, I finally saw a kitten who had arrived that very day at HSOP. I read their informative website and was introduced to the concept of volunteer transport. \r\n\r\nEventually I adopted the kitten and his mother cat and they were transported to me by volunteers; many of whom are now friends for life. HSOP was instrumental in arranging foster care until the departure date. \r\n\r\nThe staff are courteous and knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions a prospective owner might have. \r\n\r\nThey checked my references with my Vet. I was very pleased about this. It told me they are VERY serious about placing each animal in a safe and loving forever home. \r\n\r\nThese two Manx are AMAZING! For all they have gone through, they are very sociable and healthy. \r\n\r\nI would recommend Humane Society of Parkersburg to anyone looking for a professional team who always keep the welfare of each animal as their first priority.\r\n\r\nI must say my first clue that I was dealing with a first-rate organization was the impact of the photos of each animal on their website. Wow! A picture is truly worth a thousand words. The unique personal description of each animal was an extra bonus! Much care went into such detail. \r\n\r\nBRAVO HSOP!!!!!

The HSOP is a great place - but I wouldn't wanna live there! I just adopted my 2 newbies - after, unfortunately, leaving one there forever... The staff was absolutely wonderful in all situations - the difficult one & the joyful ones! I am amazed daily at how many unaltered pets come in! Every one should use the tag line "Please have your pets spay or neutered!"

    Pros

    Very nice facility

    Cons

    Have none!

    by: psliderc130

This is a nice shelter and they really try to make everyone aware they are around and have great pets that need good homes. They always advertise their fundraisers, including this one and try to get everyone to help out in any way they can. I like that they reach out to the community.

    Pros

try to get whole community involved

    Cons

    none

    by: janlincicome

I am the volunteer coordinator at HSOP. We have the greatest, most dedicated volunteers. Any time they are asked to do something they always come through, even at the last minute. They never let HSOP down. The animals are thankful that these people are willing to spend time with them. Our shelter is very fortunate to have such a caring group of volunteers.

    Pros

    Clean, caring staff and volunteers

    Cons

    HSOP HAS FANTASTIC VOLUNTEERS

I respect this shelter that they make you go through a volunteer program orientation before you can volunteer, even if you have volunteered at other shelters. I think that is a good idea, especially for new volunteers. They really care about the animals in this area and try to get the whole community involved by advertising special events for fund raising or adoption days.

    Pros

really tries to get the whole community involved in helping animals

    Cons

    none

  • 99. Very Wonderful Staff

    by: pinkcosmos

I've been to the shelter a few times and it breaks my heart to see all the animals waiting for homes. I commend the staff and volunteers for their time and caring. I had to have my dog put down and found out I could take her to the shelter for a fraction of what the vet would charge me. They let me go with her and pet her while they put her down. It was the most touching moment to know I could be with her and she would not be afraid. The staff was wonderful. They are there and very caring during all aspects of our fur angels lives.

    Pros

    Clean, caring staff, very helpful

    Cons

Can't think of any other than it is small

    Pros

They go out of their way to raise awareness to the plight

    Cons

too many animals, too few rescues

    by: TrishW

A few months ago I was given permission to work at the shelter through Community Service. I had no idea of the how well the shelter was run until I was a part of the daily activity. Every employee is a stong animal lover. Every pet in their care is given love and attention. The kennels and cages are kept very clean. Which is an ongoing process. The Manager and employess are very knowlegable of the health and well being of each pet. This is a team of pet lovers that go way and beyond their jobs to take care of these animals. Being around them encourages me to be a part of their team as well. While I am cleaning, I thank God for the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful organization.

    Pros

Very clean and well run facility.

    Cons

They need more room and improvment updates.

    Pros

    Friendly, caring staff, Clean facility

    Cons

Could use more donations or adoptions!

The shelter staff is knowledgeable and cares about the animals. They even take time from their busy lives to foster animals. The humane society accomplishes a great deal considering the limited funds they receive.

    Pros

    Excellent staff and volunteers

    Cons

    Need to upgrade shelter facility
