    by: Siouxzan

Hello to all, \nI work at a nearby prison where the HSMC has a program that involves the inmates as "trainers" in the adoption process of homeless dogs and cats. (This includes puppies and kittens) \n I adopted my dog Smokey several years ago from the HSMC adoption program at Madison Correctional. He is the most perfect dog for me, my daughter, and my cat, Mattie. Even though I was advised that Smokey didn't get along with cats, he has surely proven otherwise. Not only does he take daily walks with me and Mattie around Madison Lake, (Mattie comes along on her own), he will protect her if need be. It surprises everyone who sees a small gray cat darting along behind a big black dog! \n Please adopt a needy dog or cat. We humans are the cause of the homeless animal problem. Let's work together to remedy the situation. The loving Animals will thank you every day!\n\nSusan Smith\nMaCI Dental Department\n

  • 18. They Do It For The Love of Our Four Legged Friends (Sometimes Three)

    by: afoster8781

These folks at the Madison Cty Humane Society has done incredible work not only with our 4-legged friends but also educating the community, getting the London, Ohio Correction Institute in on training and helping to care for the animals, but worked towards in getting a sheriff/dog warden hired full-time. He has done incredible work in keeping safe our animal friends. They let the community know by via our local newspaper when funds are needed to help save, protect or heal our 4-legged friends (sometimes three legs) and the support comes rolling in. They don't have to do this, just like I don't have to write this it is "FOR THE LOVE AND DEDICATION AND PASSION WE HAVE FOR OUR 4-LEGGED FRIENDS (sometimes three). \r\n\r\nSigned by a Human of her 4-legged friends.

    Pros

Given their facility conditions (which needs major overhaul and MAJOR updates they do incredible work for what they don't have. If I was a four legged creature I want them to find me a home.

    Cons

I don't have any. Just keep doing their wonderful work.

    by: ohioualum96

I adopted my two cats Barley and Hopps from HSMC. I could not have been happier with my experience. My poor little Hopster came to us as a skinny, scared, 7 lb, one year old. We quickly discovered he had a tape worm. HSMC worked with me to get the medication he needed to make him feel all better. Now, just shy of their 3 year adoption birthday, both boys weigh a sassy 13 pounds. the shelter does good work. I am thrilled for them to be in the running for a makeover!

    Pros

The animals are truly loved and cared for-that is obivous

\r\nGot my great Pyr. from this shelter five years ago. That's not the whole story though I live in Western PA and was met half way by shelter staff. We still tell everyone about how we found Zeus on petfinder and how he came to be a Pennsylvania dog who did prison time!

The staff here have their hearts in the right place--squarely in support of the homeless pets that are fortunate enough to come there. This shelter is definitely worthy of any donations--including a makeover!

    Cons

They really need a new shelter!

  • 28. A Friend For Life!

    by: nlhamilton

I adopted my dog Jada a little over two years ago. She had been through the prison program where inmates foster the dogs and teach them basic commands. I had a 15 year old Chow/Lab mix and I knew he was destined to not be with me much longer - that is why I adopted Jada. Jada and Bear became fast friends almost instantly. I had to have Bear put down a year to the day after I adopted Jada. She was very sad to lose her friend but having her helped ease some of the pain I felt from losing him. If I decide to adopt another dog it will definitely be from Humane Society of Madison County!

    Pros

    Caring staff, prison program

    Cons

lack of space - they need a new shelter, hope they win!!

  • 29. Great Staff and caring workers

    by: shathaway

I hope my review will help the Humane Society of Madison County win a very much needed makeover. The people are great and have been working so hard to raise awareness in the community. Betty Peyton is a loving, caring, leader. She helped me when I lost my beloved dog "Sniper" and told me I would know when I was ready for a new "pal". My new "pal" came from Marion County Humane Society after a good long wait just like she said. "Harlee" came from a nice shelter--like Madison County deserves.

    Pros

    Betty Peyton is fantastic

    Cons

NEED BETTER PLACE FOR THE ANIMALS TO LIVE

  • 30. Friendly helpful and need makeover

As a member of several rescues, we have visited and worked with this shelter many times. The staff is awesome and really care about their animals. • 33. Knowledgeable/helpful - Madison County

    by: MicheleJ

My sopn adopted an elderly Beagle from this shelter. These folks made sure this old guy had his extensive dental work completed / neutered / vaccinated. They were sure to apprise my son of the pros and cons of adopting an older guy.\r\nMy son and this boy were inseperable for the several years we were lucky enough to have him as part of the family\r\nThe folks at this shelter are very caring and knowledgeable - enabled us to have a wonderful boy as part of our family.

    Pros

    Very dedicated/knowldedgeable staff

    Cons

    Poor conditions

  • 34. 1,000,000 dollars

    Cons

  • 35. Our animals need a nice shelter too

    by: beansheller

For what animal shelter we have, Betty does a great job at keeping it clean for the animals. I work at the local prison and we get the prison dogs all the time. It saddens me to know that if an dog or cat doesn't get adopted from the prison, then they have to go back to the shelter. Our shelter is just a big shed w/a trailer as the office. We are in desperate need of a shelter.

    Pros

    Staff is great

    Cons

Is is very very small and is not adequate for the animals

  • 36. Linking friends...

    by: JulieP

Our hug-a-bug was adopted from Madison County three years ago. They worked with a local group to provide basic training, and our dog was house-broken and knew basic commands when we adopted him--great. They also made a follow-up call.\n\nWe adopted during one of their Pet-Smart adopting days and I know it takes a lot of work to load up all the dogs and have volunteers ready for dog walking/assisting with adoptions. They do a lot with a little!\n \n

    Pros

Put their hearts into every match

    Cons

Building/facility is too small for the #of animals

  • 37. 5 don't do it

    by: ModelATruck

I think any county that says they don't have enough money should visit Betty at the shelter. She can show them a little money and a lot of dedication can go a long way.

    Pros

    They make it work!!!

    Cons

There aren't more like Betty and her crew

  • 38. Outstanding Staff

    by: Rira

We adopted our Catahoula Leopard Dog, Winston (known then as Teller) from the HSMC on 8 September 2007.\r\nThe staff is wonderful! Caring knowledgeable hardworking folks who do so much for these neglected and abandoned creatures.\r\nWinston had been to prison training and had been neutered, microchipped, inoculated, current on flea and parasite prevention, and obviously well-cared for and loved by them.\r\nHow they do what they do in that miserable facility is amazing.\r\nThey're truly doing God's work.\r\nRita and Les Estep

    Pros

    Dedicated Exceptional Staff

    Cons

    Desperately Needs New Facility

  • 39. On a scale of 1 to 10, Madison County scores a 10 Plus!

    by: JulieKaySmiths0n

This animal shelter stands out from others in that it is staffed and run by volunteers and literally operates on a wing and a prayer -- and a shoestring. What is accomplished here by caring people is a stellar example of what can be done simply by believing that animals deserve clean homes, fresh water, good food, and another chance to be someone's special lifetime pet and friend. This shelter must look like Heaven to many of the animals that come here, lost, discarded, and in such need of love and hope.

    Pros

Caring staff, dedication, devotion, selflessness, wonderful care

    Cons

    need a new building!

  • 40. Wonderful shelter!

    by: libramom

I've been to the shelter a few times over the years to volunteer with my daughter's Girl Scout troop. The facility is clean, the staff show an obvious love of animals and the animals are well fed and cared for. We adopted a cat from the shelter 10 years ago and it was a very easy and painless procedure. Keep up the great work!

    Pros

    Kind, caring staff, clean conditions

    Cons

    Not enough room

  • 41. Wonderful Program

    by: lrochefo

We drove from NH to OH to get our dog who we found on Petfinders.com It took some negotiation as two other folks were also wanting him as well. As luck would have, they bowed out and we made a 12 hour drive to do a meet and greet. The staff was great through all the details and best of all, the Fresh Start Program gave us the head start we needed with house breaking and basic commands. We have a dog who is extremely well behaved and socialized. He is joy to all that meet him and an example that a rottie/shephard can be a terrific mix and well behaved pet. If they had the facilities to take and place even more dogs, it would be a wonderful service to many! God bless all the people that do this work! Thank you!!

    Pros

    The Fresh Start Program

    Cons

They are in desperate need of a new shelter

  • 42. Great Shelter

    by: Whitefire05

We have gotten both of our dogs from the Madison County Humane Society. We could not be happier with our pets. Our first dog Brassy that we adopted was rescued from another shelter who was out of space and was going to have to put her down. I think of how tragic it would have been to this sweet and loyal dog. She is the most sweetest dog. She is part of our family. You can tell the people who work there really care for these animals. When we thought of adopting again we immediately thought of this shelter.

    Pros

    Great people who loves animals

    Cons

They need a better facility to house the animals

  • 43. Great job!

    by: lmaschmann

I would like to compliment the staff and volunteers of the Humane Society of Madison County. I come from a much more urban area, and when I first visited this center I was quite taken aback by the meagerness of the facilities. After talking to the staff, I saw that they are truly caring, knowledgable people who are doing the very best with the resources they have. The animals are happy and well cared for. The people take a sincere interest in the well-being of each animal. One man even told me the whole life story of a dog that had been in & out several times, and how hard they were trying to find her an appropriate home.\r\n\r\nKudos to all of you! I sincerely hope that you get the resources you need, so that you can continue in your mission to help these animals find loving homes.

    by: soulcowboy

A few years ago I got my Fletcher from HSMC. They were having an adoption day at our PetSmart. I went in to pick-up some cat food, and came out with a new dog!! Fletcher has been a GREAT addition to our family. And Madison County took great care of Fletcher (then named Kermit) when he was under there care. Fletcher was trained at the London Correctional Institute where HSMC has a care program set-up. The HSMC has some OUTSTANDING volunteers and shelter care givers. They do SO much with so little. We love attending the dinners/auctions as fundraisers, as well.

    Pros

    Very caring staff!!

    Cons

Could use more space - maybe a NEW SHELTER from Zootoo!! :)

HSMC has caring knowledgable staff who provide great service. The facility needs replaced and there is not enough space. The prison training program does wonders for the dogs and the inmates. by: EmmasMommy

We adopted Emma (one of Queenie's pups) in September of 2006. She was 9 weeks old and had been fortunate enough to participate in the prison program. Being a new puppy mommy, I wasn't sure what her first nights would be like and how frequently she'd need to potty. Much to my surprise, Emma had no night time accidents because of the stellar training she had through the prison program. She knew how to walk on a leash, eat her food and stay in her crate and keep it clean. She's a love and a joy and the Humane Society did a terrific job placing her!\n\nBRAVO!!!

  • 58. Does a lot with a little

    by: PixiesMom

My experience with this shelter comes from adopting our dog a few years back. She was part of the prison training program, which made her transition to living with us much easier. \r\n\r\nThe shelter staff is incredible, friendly, and caring. Being my first time adopting from a shelter, I was shocked at the steps I went through to adopt Pixie. In the end, I think this is great and keeps dogs going to good homes.\r\n\r\nThe facilities are small, but they do the best they can with them. I cant imagine the work they could do if given more updated and larger spaces to do it in.\r\n\r\nThank you for taking such good care of our Pixie until she could come home with us!

  • 60. A Shelter with a Heart

    by: kittybinion

I met Betty the Shelter mgr. a few years ago and was inpressed from the beginning. She has a very difficult job. But to Betty it is not just a job. Betty and most of the staff and volunteers were very genuine caring people that loved animals. I helped at few fund raisers and was astounded how this shelter could even operate with all that was needed. Although I am unable to help much anymore I continue to support everything they do. If I was wealthy I would donate tons of money to help them. If I had the precious commodity of time I would be there. It is an amazing little place that needs more county and city support, not just the community.

Even though the facility isn't the best, we have a great staff and board. We have wonderful animals that come through. It is a positive environment and we try to help every animal in any way we can. So if you are ever looking for an animal come to our shelter and take a look!!

    prison program

    Cons

    low budget

    by: cpugliese

I've never been to a shelter where there are more caring people! They are making the most of what they have and truly look out for the best care of the animals.

    Pros

    Making the most of it!

    Cons

    None!

  • 65. Great staff

    by: AbbyScott

The humane society has great staff who are caring and knowledgable. They work hard at placing the animals int eh right home. Their prison program makes their dogs and puppies more adoptable. Everything is great except for the shelter itself - a block buidling for the dogs and trailers for the rest, but they do the best with what they have and are constantly looking for ways to improve things.

    Pros

    great staff and programs

    Cons

    shelter needs replaced

  • 66. #1 in my heart!

    by: minpingirl

The staff has done a great job with what they've got\r\nto do it with! I can't believe that our community can't get together and do something about the facility. The pilot program is so great. I've recommended it to a lot of people looking for pets. \r\nKeep doing the best you can! I hope we win the million dollar makeover!

    Pros

    Hometown people helping hometown people

    Cons

    We need a better facility!

    by: Care1974

This shelter has done wonderful things for the community. They care about the animals and work hard to make the best of what they have. Big hearts that work with little. If there is a will there is a way.\n\nGreat Job and keep up the good work.

  • 70. Big Hearts in a Small Space

    by: RCraft

Although it is located in a house trailer, the Humane Society of Madison County's outer appearance in no way reflects the quality of care the animals inside receive. The shelter treats all of their animals like royalty. The homeless dogs and cats might as well be living in a palace or a 5 star hotel for the treatment they are given. Coming from places where they were often little more than "trailer trash," discarded and unloved, the animals who find their way to the HSMC trailer are suddenly super stars. Upon arrival, they are provided with a warm bed, lots of food, and plenty of love--things they often did not have in their former existence. Appearances can be deceiving and the outer shell of the shelter in no way reflects the huge hearts beating inside flimsy metal walls.

    Pros

They care about all the animals who pass through their doors.

    Cons

They have very little resources and no space, but they make the best of things.

  • 71. Betty tries to help them all

    by: barbaracollier

Betty is such a loving director, an animal lover like know other. She takes time to talk to people and really tries to find the best homes for her animals.\r\n\r\nShe's trying so hard to find a home for Ty, a beautiful black lab mix that lost his owner when the owner died of cancer \r\n\r\nSHE CARES, the shelter cares!\r\n\r\n

    Pros

    small but big in love

    Cons

    needs a new shelter desperately

  • 72. A great, caring place.

    by: Trixie21

The Madison County Humane Society has saved thousands of lives of stray animals and dogs. My family and I are always impressed with the service of the kind, caring people there. I also like that they run adoptions out of Petsmart in Hilliard, since we tend to go there a lot.

    Pros

    Friendly staff, great adoption selection.

    Cons

Facilities are lacking, can be messy because of this.

  • 73. Please Help Madison County win the Extreme Makeover!

    by: angestan

This is a great group of people who are committed to finding good homes for these unwanted pets. The facility is is extreme need. Despite the conditions of the environment, the people are just as committed to making sure these animals are taken care and adopted into loving homes. Please offer your support in helping them to win the extreme makeover! Good people deserve good things! Thanks for taking care of the animals needs and most importantly proving love!

    Pros

They have tried to do their best with what they have to work with.

    Cons

    They have very limited resources

  • 74. HSMC

    by: lindseymay01

I got two of my own dogs from this shelter. I also volunteer with a rescue group and frequently refer people to this humane society. It is great that they have the prison program. The staff is VERY knowledgeable about all of the dogs at the humane society. Betty and the staff is always going above and beyond to find dogs their forever homes. It is unfortunate about the building and the setting but the staff does not let that slow them down from helping dogs and cats in need.

    Pros

The staff knows about all of the dogs, they have an application process.

    Cons

    the facilities

  • 75. Thinking "outside of the box"

    by: revpat

Many shelters do not take into consideration an animal's need for socialization and play with either humans and/or others of its kind. This shelter is to be praised for their common area where dogs are allowed to play with each other, and for its alliance with the prison where animals are placed with inmates where they are treated kindly, trained, and most of all, loved. \n\nThe staff goes above and beyond their "jobs",often paying for animal care out of their own pockets rather than seeing the animals do without food, medicines, etc.\n\nMadison County Humane Society is optimizing its use of limited funding and facilities by seeing and acting "out of the box!" Kudos to you all!

    Pros

Caring, loving staff that thinks and acts "out of the box"

    Cons

    limited facilities and funding

  • 76. Fantasting Animals, Fantasting People

    by: PetLover4Ever94

\r\n\r\nThis shelter is a great shelter. They treat the animals with love, and care. They work hard to insure that every animal is taken care of. Many of the animals are adopted, and as they've said they've taken in 4,000 animals over the course of 4 years. This shelter is a wonderful shelter and derserves all that it needs.

    Pros

All animals are taken care of, they let the animals exercise

    Cons

    Cleanliness of the dog kennels,

  • 77. Great Animal Shelter, Great People!

    by: XxshinbuxX

I LOVE the Humane Society of Madison County, it is a great shelter...The staff and volunteers 9I happen to volunteer there) are great...they truly do love the animals...but they could help out alot more animals if they had more space!!\r\n

    Pros

Caring and loving staff, and volunteers!

    Cons

The shelter is old, and could use a bigger building!

  • 78. Fantastic Shelter! They do amazing things.

    by: jrichter

I have been affiliated with this shelter for a couple of years now, mainly because I adopted my dog Whitney from there. She went through their prison program and I simply can not sing their praises enough. She is the best dog I could ever dream of owning. She is so well behaved and is fantastic with our kids. I owe all of this to HSMC. They take the time to make sure their dogs are going to not only good homes, but compatible homes. They are passionate about their work and about their animals. The prison program is fantastic and the adoption events they attend/participate in are great! I have helped volunteer at some of their events and the staff and other volunteers that I have had the pleasure of meeting are extraordinary.

    Pros

Prison program, adoption events, community involvement

    Cons

the facilities they have to work from

  • 79. This shelter is great!

    by: sarahk10

The Shelter is a great place, I have been fostering dogs since the summer of 2007. The dogs have been great and the shelter workers wonderful. They are always quick to reply whenever I have a question or am ready for another foster. The programs that they have in place are a great opportunity for the dogs to be seen by postential families and the adoption rate is great! Whenever I go onto the website to see what is going on at the shelter I always see a big turnover in dogs and comments on alot of the dogs that they were rescued from shelters who would have had to put them down. If the shelter had more space then they would be able to help more animals that would otherwise have to be put down.

    Pros

    Great Staff

    Cons

    need more room for animals

  • 80. Hard working Organization

    by: gpeyton2001

The HSMC is a group of hard working folks making the best of it. The shelter belongs to the county. The HSMC stepped up to get as many animals out as possible. There is a prison program which is "kewl" and "awesome". Working on getting dogs out of there. I have volunteered in transporting dogs for the HSMC. www.doggietransportguy.com. Maybe you can volunteer and help too.

    Pros

hard working, makes do, wonderful people

    Cons

    shelter belongs to the county

  • 81. Small but great

    Pros

    Cons

  • 82. A shelter of hope

    by: beaglemutz

Nestled just outside London, Ohio to the west of Columbus, this shelter works hard to place each adoptable animal that comes into their care into the perfect forever home. Adopters have traveled from as far as Maine, Colorado and even Canada. Their partnership with the Fresh Start program where inmates 'foster' kittens, puppies and dogs of all ages. They are able to teach basic training, including housebreaking and crate training. They get to know their fosters and provide great insight into their likes and dislikes. This allows staff to better match potential adopters with a dog or cat that best fits what they are looking for. To have these once homeless animals be with a caring person 24 hours a day will help even the most timid pet to learn to trust again. Receiving very minimal financial support from the local government, they are still able to provide similar services to those of larger nearby shelters!!!

    Pros

The people, both staff and volunteers

    Cons

    The physical building
