  • 2. adopted Fluffernutter from Hbg

    by: kathypeterson

Great organization--I collect newspapers and "pooper scooper" bags from work and deliver every other week. The place is just inundated with animals. They desperately need a makeover!

    Pros

    great staff

    Cons

    overcrowded with animals

  • 3. Volunteering at the shelter

    by: TeresaG

I recently started volunteering to work with the dogs at the shelter. I love getting the dogs out of their kennels and giving them the love and attention they deserve. Everyone at the shelter is great! Since I am new, I still am unsure about certain things, but you can always find someone to answer your question. And the Doctor on staff is AWESOME. I found a lump on a dog and she took the time to talk to me about it and what they would do for the dog! Just as if it were my own personal pet. The public (and insurance carriers) need to be educated about the Pit Bull Terrier breed as there are many in the shelter for a long time...and many of them are the sweetest, kindest animals - just have a bad reputation! PLEASE VISIT THE SHELTER AND ADOPT AN ANIMAL.

    Pros

The animals - they just need forever homes

    Cons

Not enough space for all of the animals

  • 4. ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY

    by: ztT4MP40706130

These Nazi's are out for MONEY MONEY MONEY, they have a Mercedes Benz SUV for their own pleasure that was donated for animal rescue use, They go after innocent people so they can sue them for everything they have, They kill and torture cats for their amusement, they sell and use dogs for medical research, they have political friends in high places that do their bidding, their vet on staff is a quack that kills more animals than saves, if an animal has no monetary value they kill it or sell it to the highest bidder for research or torture.\n\nLook into who is on staff and who runs this CA$h COW and you will see what I am talking about.\n\nCharity my butt, these people are Nazi crooks, milking central pa dry while worthy NO KILL animal shelters are loosing millions.

    Pros

    NOT ONE THING

    Cons

    MURDEROUS GREEDY VINDICTIVE DISHONEST

  • 5. Great Service to Animals

    by: jrmcelwee

When we visited the Shelter we were interested in adopting one kitten. However, when searching with the help of an outstanding associate we were led to two kittens from the same litter. We asked to hold one kitten and when we had it in our arms the remaining kitten was literally crying. \r\n\r\nWe were so moved we adopted both kittens. The associate at the Shelter was totally competent in her knowledge of the animals and she was absolutely and totally clear with the instructions for care when we had the kittens home. \r\n\r\nThis is the second time we adopted a kitten from this Shelter. The last was nearly 20 years ago and we had that cat for about 15 years. It was devasting when we lost him. \r\n\r\nThe associate was rught when she told us we would have no problems with either of the kittens we adopted. They have become an integral part of our family. \r\n\r\nThanks to the great folks at the Harrisburg Humane Society for their care and dedication to the lives of many animals.

    Pros

    Service and care outstanding

    Cons

    NONE!

  • 6. Life at the Shelter and Beyond

    by: SAUlrich

I had grown a habit to visiting the Humane Society's East Shore shelter on and off for the past several of years. I always found the shelter to be clean and orderly in both the areas were people occupied and that of the animals. The staff was always very friendly and informative. They seem to know each animal as an individual, not just as a “resident.” They take seriously the responsibility and have great concern to make certain that each animal’s life beyond the shelter is a full and happy one.\r\n\r\nI own 2 cats that I picked up as strays. In 2005 we adopted Honey. My son and I “found” her on one of our visits to the shelter. We just had to have her and she deserved a happy home. She was a stray picked up on the streets of Harrisburg. She is such a sweet cat and gives us lots of love and we gratefully love her back! \r\n\r\nA little over a year ago we adopted Daisy, a pit bull mixed breed. The day I met her at the shelter, I was actually there to see another dog that I viewed on the shelter’s website. This is something I’ve done frequently because, although we were blessed to have the love of our cats, we always had a yearning to own a dog. What better way to do that than to adopt a deserving animal from the shelter? The staff was very concerned about Daisy’s life beyond the shelter and took great care to make certain we were the right match for her. With the larger breeds of dogs, everyone residing in the household must meet the dog at the shelter. Then a representative of the shelter conducted a home visit, to make sure that it will be the best place for Daisy and to insure a happy life for her. Needless to say, we passed with flying colors, and she has become such a wonderful addition to our family. I don’t know what I’d do without her – she truly is woman’s best friend! \r\n

    Pros

The staff is very friendly and informative. They hold great insterest and responsibility in the well-being of each animal.

    Cons

They need more room to accommodate all the deserving animals that find their way to the shelter.

  • 7. We love our East Shore Shelter

    by: jbingaman

We adopted a Pet of the Week about 15 years ago. Kris was the best dog ever. He had been brought to the shelter after he was injured in a fight with a pitbull. He was the scariest looking yellow lab you have ever seen. (He lost his eye and had to have his jaw reset.) But his heart was so big.\nThe East Shore Humane Society does so much for the community. They go above and beyond what they should be doing.

    Pros

Caring staff, clean location, and great pets

    Cons

    Not enough space.

  • 8. Great Shelter

    by: wetoner

Last year around this time I visited the shelter looking for a cat. The staff was very friendly, helpful and didn't rush me, even though the shelter was very crowded with animals and I am sure they have a lot to do. I found Shebia that day and what a great cat she is.

    Pros

Dedicated workers who taken good care of the animals

    Cons

Often over crowded due to size of shelter and the number of animals they get.

  • 9. No kill shelter- thanks from Fernie

    by: ShelbyS

I've had two dogs from here. My current love, Fernie, was at the shelter for 6 weeks, being nursed back from starvation and straydom. You'd never know it now! They had faith in her and she has brought joy to my life (and hopefully me to hers.) She took and passed her CGC test and has a lovely disposition. She is a big dog, and she has a big heart. So do the folks at HHS. Thanks from Fernie and me (and Gramma!)

    Pros

    Great pets- no kill shelter

    Cons

    so much going on

  • 10. Save Shelter

    by: zengirl

Please help save this shelter-- we really need it now that the west shore shelter closed because of finanical problems!

    Pros

They are a great shelter with a great staff.

    Cons

the west shore shelter has closed!

  • 11. Awesome

    by: julies310

I actually adopted from the West Shore HS. But they have had to close the doors recently. It's ashame. They gave me the best pet I could of ever asked for. The staff was so nice and caring. This is all you can ask when these people are in charge of taking all of these unwanted creatures. People should really think HARD before they go out and purchase pets. People just decide they are done with them and discard them not realizing what it does to their feelings after being given away. Or tie them to a box in the backyard and forget about them. I am very thankful for Bubbles that I found at this shelter. You peole really ROCK. Thank you.

    Pros

Wish they could help more pets shelter not big enough

    Cons

I got my beloved doggie from them

  • 12. Kind and Caring Staff

    by: purpledeb8

The staff really care about the pets. They give up every inch of space to provide room for more pets. They overcome all challenges and make the best of what they have. The pets are shown lots of love by volunteers and staff alike. The animals are worked with until they are ready to be the best pet for anyone who walks in the door.

    Pros

    Staff

    Cons

    Too many pets

  • 13. Very rewarding experience

    by: Monsey

After losing my cat to cancer. I decided to go to the Harrisburg Humane Society and check out the kittens. After chating with the staff and them showing me a kitten that looked exactly like my cat that had just passed away I decided to adopt this wonderful 6 month old black and white sweatheart. The staff was correct she is everything they told me she would be. The couresty extended to me in adopting this kitten and the sympathy shown to mo over my loss was over whelming.\r\n\r\nThe only problem I could see was the lack of space for the many cats, dogs etc. being housed at the society. I would be willing to pay and additinal tax to have this shelter expanded and additional employees or volunteers.\r\n\r\nA $1M dollar cash makeover for improvements may sway me to volunteer at this great organization.

    Pros

    great and rewarding experience

    Cons

    over crowded

  • 14. Harrisburg East Shore

I got my pit bull there 6 years ago and she is the best dog ever. Everyone there was very nice and very knowledgable. I wish more people would give pit bulls a chance they are a very loyal and loveable breed!

    Pros

    Cons

    need more funding

  • 15. Should be EVERYONES First Stop

    by: crismonica

I adopted both my Obie (dog) and Diego (cat) from here. They are great pets! The people there were super nice and friendly when helping us look for our perfect fit. They were patient while we made our choice (which took us a few visits). They take in both strays and surrenders and need more space, supplies, and families to volunteer and adopt.

    Pros

    Great pets!

    Cons

Not enough space to keep them all

  • 16. People Who Really Care

    by: ztT4MP29828501

The animals at the Humane Society of Harrisburg shelter are the best cared for in the entire region. The staff works tirelessly to make sure the animals receive what they need, and the volunteers give selflessly to help out. We admire their dedication. We live more than 20 miles away from the shleter and we support it financially because we believe in its reputation as the best available shelter in the area.

    Pros

Volunteers' concern is admirable and staff is fanatastic

    Cons

The shleter is in desperate need of an upgrade because what they have is simply inadequate to care for the volume of animals they help.

  • 17. Wonderful

    by: kmc5

this shelter accepts any animal that is not wanted as well as strays. It had to close its west shore office because it wasn't safe for the animals. It needs help so that it doesn't have to put down any animals and turn away animals in need. PLEASE HELP OUR SHELTER

    Pros

helps find homes for unwanted animals

    Cons

    over crowded

  • 18. A Great Place for Animals ! Humane Society of Harrisburg Area-East Shore

    by: ztT4MP47703001

This humane society has had to close one shelter this past year, so the existing one is overcrowded and badly in need of a makeover.

    Pros

Caring staff; sharp new director; good communications with the public.

    Cons

Needs more room for bunnies--larger cages.

    Pros

    Cons

    Needs $$$!

  • 25. I know that this shelter needs some makeover money!!

    by: AnneM

This shelter works very hard with what they have to take care of the animals in their care. They have adopted out so many animals, but need more financial resources to continue the work.

    Pros

These people work hard with what they have, to place dogs and cats and to train people on how to care for them.

    Cons

None, except they need more money, more volunteers, etc.

  • 26. Great shelter

    by: slsast07

The shelter is definitely in need of a makeover especially since the closing of the other shelter in the area. The staff is wonderful, caring, and knowledgeable and they do the best with what they have. They are very active in getting the animals out and "marketing" them in the community.

    Pros

Active in community, Dedicated & caring staff

    Cons

    Overcrowded

  • 27. Kitty Cat

I adopted my 2 cats from there when they were young. There were 3 and 1 was already adopted, i felt sorry that they were split up, so i took the other 2. Scout and Sidney are healthy little boys, almost 2yrs old!

    Cons

  • 28. For the Love of Animals

    by: jenbarry

My daughter's girl scout troop had the chance to get an inside look at the animal shelter. They got a tour of the building as well as the chance to look at MOST of the pets that are waiting for a home. The girls had a great time and the "tour guide" was very informative and answered all the girls questions with confidence and ease.

    Pros

    Large selection of adoptable pets...

    Cons

Not that close to MY home.

  • 29. very active shelter

    by: joanieannie

I signed up to be a volunteer and even attended an orientation but was unable to help due to the fact that I watched my granddaughter daytime this past summer and she was not allowed to be there (too young) They are a very active group and are always finding ways to earn money for the shelter.

    Pros

    never turn animals away

    Cons

    just so very very crowded

  • 30. Love this Shelter

    by: tygrr1

We go here because it is close to where we live. The staff is very knowledgeable. They always have a huge selection of animals

    Pros

    Lots of Animals

    Cons

    A little smelly

  • 31. Great Facility

    by: twistedkites42

This is a great shelter with a caring staff. The new director is a god send. Because they had to close the west shore shelter the east shore shelter is overcrowded and needs to secure all the adoptions that it can!!!

    Pros

    Great staff

    Cons

overcrowded - not their fault though

  • 32. HSHA deserves this makeover.

    by: reddyd03

I've been volunteering there for a little less then a year and was shocked when I first started there. The staff does there best to deal with the amount of animals that come in but with limited space you can only do so much. Rooms that are for volunteers and staff are often occupied by dog or cats as overflow. A lot of the time the rooms that are set-up for personal time between a pet and soon to be owner are even occupied from the overflow. Everybody does as much as they can with cleaning and upkeep but it doesn't do anything for the space. If a shelter has ever needed a makeover it's definitly this one.

    Pros

There are plenty of great staff that are always willing to help the volunteers who come through.

    Cons

It is just far too small to deal with amount of animals they recieve all the time.

  • 33. A great place to find a pet

    by: mfranco

We had a very good experience there twice, once for a dog, once for a set of little kittens. The staff was caring and professional and the animals had personalized attention and clean cages despite the overabundance of them due to the closing of another shelter and the need to absorb more animals than the facility was built for. They really deserve a make0ver! Many committed volunteers. Comprehensive testing for diseases and a generous package about neutering and immunizations.

    Pros

Very carring staff, clean facilities despite being overcrowded.

    Cons

Too many animals for the space.

  • 34. Puppy Love

    by: ztT4MP58936241

We are looking to adopt our third time and after 2 trips we are still undecided but the staff sure knows the animals. We loved our last two dogs from shelter and gave them great lives .

    Pros

Great place to adopt a pet We are looking to adopt our 3rd

    Cons

    none

  • 35. Great Shelter but needs help

    by: Squoggy

This shelter deserves the makeover. They are overcrowded and had to shut down the other one in the area. In all my dealings with them everyone has been very nice and helpful. They truly are here for the animals. If you are looking for a new pet, please think adoption. 2 of my 3 dogs were rescues and I couldn't imagine life without them now. Once again, if a shelter deserves some help, Harrisburg area humane society deserves it.

    Pros

    Great Local Shelter

    Cons

    Needs Makeover

  • 36. A Merged Shelter

    by: vbchurch

The west shore animal shelter merged with the Harrisburg Humane Society and as a result many dogs are being housed in as many crates/runs as possible.\r\n\r\nThe management of the Harrisburg Humane Society is doing it's best to manage all the animals and to work with the local rescue organizations.

    Pros

This shelter has acquired the animals from a local shelter

    Cons

It's very noisy when walking in the dog runs..

  • 37. Awesome Shelter

    by: BONSELTZER

We adopted our Luke here and I've also adopted from this shelter 3 times before, dogs and cats. They are great. Never had a bad experience here.

    Pros

    location, friendliness

    Cons

    none

  • 38. ADOPT A FRIEND FROM HSHA

    by: ztT4MP23679611

THIS SHELTER DOES A GREAT JOB SERVING AS A TEMPORARY HOME FOR THE ANIMALS UNTIL THEY FIND A HOME.THE STAFF HAS A WARM ,LOVING HEART WHEN IT COMES TO CARING FOR OUR FRIENDS WITH COLD NOISES.I CAN'T IMAGINE THIS AREA NOT HAVING THIS SHELTER,BUT IT DOES NEED MORE ROOM.IT IS SO EASY FOR PEOPLE TO IGNORE THE ANIMAL POPULATION EXPLOSION,SO BESIDES THE ACTUAL SPACE FOR ANIMALS ,WE NEED A ROOM TO EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT OVERPOPULATION.THE ANIMALS THANK YOU FOR HAVING THIS CONTEST.

    Pros

THE STAFF TRULY PUTS ALOT OF THEIR HEART AND SOUL INTO CARING FOR THE ANIMALS' NEEDS. THEY ALSO WORK VERY HARD MAKING SURE THE SHELTER IS AS CLEAN AS IT CAN BE WITH ALL THE ANIMALS THEY HAVE.

    Cons

SPACE IS A BIG ISSUE,SOMEHOW IF THE DOG RUNS COULD BE MORE PRIVATE MAYBE IT WOULD BE LESS NOISY.

  • 39. Harrisburg Humane Society

    by: funnygirl1235

This shelter is desperately in need of a major renovation due to the fact it is now serving the east and west shore. It is a great inconvenience to the west shore people now that they lost their shelter there. It is also putting a huge burden on the east shore shelter without that facility. When visiting the shelter the last time they had animals in cages in the hallways to make room for all the tennents. It is very sad to see these conditions, and I hope that everyone in this area will support our HSHA and help to eliminate the overcrowding condition we suffer by helping to win this makeover. Please write reviews and help people to make informed decisions on different products, vet services, food choices etc. They earn points for that also and it only takes a little time to add your opinion of the products you use. Please report any abuse you see and spay and nueter your pets to help eliminate this problem.

    Pros

It is a very needed facility and located in the suburb of Harrisburg.

    Cons

It is very very undersized for the amount of animals the take in. We did lose a satelite facility on the west shore already due to lack of funds to keep it up and going.

  • 40. Adoption from East Shore

    by: ztT4MP61715049

We adopted our black Lab, Max, from the East Shore Humane Society. The staff was very knowledgeable and thorough in their review and care of Max when he was originally surrended to them. They provided us with his history which helped us get to know him better.

    Pros

    Easy to get to.

    Cons

    Overcrowded

  • 41. Our dog Boomer

  • 43. MATCHMAKERS EXTRAORDINAIRE

    by: dperesie

I am a 73 year old woman who, over the years, have found the best animals of my life at the Humane Society of Harrisburg. The latest is a dog I adopted in February of 2007. He is the best behaved little Shih Tzu named Onyx. He was 10 at the time and I was 72 -- we were and are perfect for each other. He is a much loved little pooch now -- we walk every day the weather permits. He is a total ray of sunshine in my senior years.

    Pros

They know how to match up animals with people

    Cons

    They need more space

  • 44. The best Human Society

    by: apple45

We recently adopted our dog Jody from the East Shore Shelter of the Humane Society. She is a wonderful dog. My four year old grandson spent the weekend with us and she did great! She loves to give you doggie kisses and go for a walk. She gets along with our other pet Sally.

    Pros

There are many beautiful animals to pick from.

    Cons

The noise level is difficult to deal with.

  • 45. great place, with so much potential...give it a makeover!!

    by: eversoSweet26

Every animal shelter is already a great foundation, but HHS has so much potential to make even more of a difference. The people are there to care, we have the pets, we have everything but the makeover so far to make it happen. WIN THE MAKEOVER!!

every animal shelter is a pro.

    Cons

over-crowded with the closing of the west shore

  • 46. Shelter trying hard

    by: equs2

As I frequently do when in an area, I visited this shelter while visiting my brother who lives in the area. I found the building to be clean and in good condition. I talked for a long time with one volunteer and learned that they were trying to do a good job but were in a very difficult area. Problems they dealt with were those faced by many city area shelters. Namely many more pit bulls than they could get adpoted. I learned alot about dog fighting from the volunteer.

    Pros

    Trying hard in difficult area

    Cons

    none

    by: summerx0bsession

I love the East Shore Humane Society. It is the only place I will go for pets. I would love to volunteer there but I'm not old enough. When I am and I can drive, I will definitely go there to help take care of the animals. There are a lot of animals there.

    Pros

amazing pets, knowledgeable staff, great customer service

    Cons

overcrowded with pets due to certain conditions

  • 50. Harrisburg East Area Humane Society

    by: ztT4MP21727967

It is so important for a community to have a humane Society that they can count on to do their utmost to save and help stray and unwanted or miss treated animals. I have found strays and was so thankful I had a place that took them in where I felt they would do all they could to find a home for the animal. You are at a loss when you find an animal and you just can not keep it because you all ready have pets of your own and can not find anyone who will take it. \n\nPlus it is so important to educate people on the importance of spay and neutering your pet. Shelters try to educate pet owners of this. There are so many unwanted pets and people must take responsibility and understand the consequences to the animal when not wanted. Please all large communities need an organization such as this. Sandy Gardosik from Harrisburg pa.

    Pros

Help unwanted animals find a home

    Cons

Will leave animals to suffer on the city street to be harmed or run over.

    by: dapook

No complaints really - this is a great resource to our community. My Mickey and Lou are adoptees from the Humane Society - Mickey from their former Mechanicsburg location, and Lou from a placement at PetSmart. Before them, we had Jackson, Dunkin and Huey. They do a wonderful job of caring for the animals and for doing all they can to place animals in homes where they will be a great match, be loved and well cared for.

    Pros

    Caring, compassionate, no-kill shelter

    Cons

Over worked staff are sometimes rude to people coming in

They do have a lot of animals, and I'm sure it takes a lot of time and money to take care of all of them. I hope they get the makeover so they can help more animals.

    by: lasmb1

I can't say enough about the joy the cats we have adopted from Hbg's Humane Society over the years has brought my family. We adopted one cat from the East shelter and one from the (now closed) West shelter. Harrisburg is far too big to only have one shelter so an expansion is most certainly in order.

    Cons

    Too crowded

  • 65. The Shelter

    by: dreamjumper17

This shelter is the best one that I have been to. The staff is quite knowledgeable and very friendly. They were able to answer all of our questions and alert us of any pre-existing conditions. The is very clean and organized.\r\n\r\nThe application was the longest process. But it shows that they are making sure that the animals are going home with good, loving people! \r\n\r\nThe hardest part was taking home just one... there is such a great selection but that means that they are overcrowded. It would be great to expand the facility to accomodate the great animals that are looking for a home. \r\n\r\nI would definitely return when looking for a new friend!

  • 68. Our Humane Society in Harrisburg is wonderful

    by: castlekeeper

I think the Humane Society of Harrisburg is doing a fabulous job taking unwanted or abused animals off the streets and giving them a roof over their heads, food, water and a second chance at a good life. However we are in an area of puppy mills so our discarded dog rate is higher than in some areas but the shelter isn't that big. They really need this $$$$$$ to take care of the amount of animals they get. Every cent will be maximized. Good luck,I hope you win.

    Pros

A great job taking unwanted or abused animals off the streets

    Cons

    Not nearly enough room

  • 72. shelter dogs from harrisburg

    by: blueviolet

Both of my dogs are rescues from the Harrisburg Humane Society. The staff was wonderful and helpful. They are such caring people. It breaaks my heart that they are trying desperately to care for the thousands of animals brought to this shelter and they simply do not have enough funds. The shelter is close to the city and there are alot of pit biulls that are hard to place, but the staff does fundraisers, some very creative, and they never ever give up! Their dedication to all animals coming through their door is inspiring. Even when the sister-shelter had to be closed due to lack of funds, they never call it quits - they move forward and begin again. I have the greatest admiration for these hard-working, big-hearted women and men.

    Pros

  • 74. shelter

    by: mybffmojo

we got snickers there about two and half years ago. it was pretty crowded--a lot of animals were in there. the shelter definitely needs some help, but i think it's doing the best it can. when we got snickers, he was around 10-12 weeks old. he was fairly underweight, but other than that he was a healthy little guy. considering that they're the only humane society in the area, they definitely deserve the makeover. there used to be a second shelter, but since it closed the harrisburg humane society is taking in twice the animals. the people there are very friendly and obviously care about the animals---they just need a makeover to help them out.

  • 75. needs help!

    by: Annalee86

I had taken a kitten there a few years ago when we found out it was a male instead of a female like the person who had given him to us said. When we took him in we were told that he'd be put down when we left because they were too crowded, so I took him back home, and now 3 years later he's still here. With more financial aid this place can be made larger to accomodate more animals, at that point in time what they had told me was very upsetting, he was two month old and cute as a button, we just weren't sure about owning a male cat. News like that just turned me off to the place. It needs a helping hand!

Wow, what a great place. My mom got her dog from here, along with several of my friends. A great place to adopt a pet. They really could use the makeover though: their budget has suffered due to the city/state etc. not being able to secure enough funds for their shelter. The Harrisburg area is fairly big, this shelter is in the center of about a million people in the 50 mile radius. Please help this shelter by adopting an animal, contributing to the makeover, or making a donation.\n\nThanks!

THey offered microchipping for any animal in the area at an unbelievable price. Even though I did not get my dog there I brought her in for the microchipping and they were kind, knowledgeable and just wonderful with her.\r\n\r\nI have also visited the humane society looking for animals in the past for family members and they have always taken the time to show us around, get out pets for us and talk to us about each animal.\r\n\r\nHowever, the shelter is in need of more room for all of its pets. by: jessnic

Sandy is our 3rd dog we've rescued from the shelters for the last 30+ years. The Humane Society of Harrisburg and Mechanicsburg have been great places to adopt pets...People are very helpful and really love the animals. It's a shame they had to close the Mechanicsburg location. A lot of good memories there taking my kids to "shop" for a new puppy, good place to drop off old newspapers, and our latest addition was adopted from there. THANKS for 2 super dogs, Mechanicsburg and Harrisburg locations. I love the mixed breeds. They have such a great disposition and are great family pets. They make the best friends our family has ever had !! THANKS !!

I'm really pulling for the Hbg Shelter. They completely 100% deserve the make-over. Relying just on donations from around the area? They are overcrowded and it's a shame because I tried taking a stray cat w/ an upper respiratory infection there this summer. They couldn't even think about accepting him for at least 2 weeks. It's amazing what these people do for animals and what other people don't do. by: jacki627

I've adopted 2 cats from Harrisurg Area East Shore Humane Society. My mom adopted 2 cats from there, also. I'm always trying to get somebody to take me to the shelter so I can look around. But, everybody that knows me, knows that I will want to adopt another cat. The 2 cats I adopted stayed with my fiance's mom when we moved out, because her roomate is really attatched to them. We get to see Jazmine and Tigger every weekend. If I didn't already have 6 cats, I would be allowed to adopt 1 or 2 more from the shelter. But, until we get a bigger house, that will have to wait. The staff has always shown their care and compassion towards the animals I or my mom have been interested in. They answered our questions and were very helpful. The staff was very polite and encouraged the adoption of my cats...they even tried to get me to take more kitties. If I was allowed, I'd take as many cats as I possibly could. When we get a bigger house and I'm allowed to get a dog, I am planning to look at whatever this shelter has to offer, before looking anywhere else. I love adopting from the shelter because I know I'm helping animals in need of loving forever homes.

The Harrisburg Humane Society needs this makeover badly. A couple of months ago I found a Husky/Shepherd mix and took him out to be checked for microchips. There was none and I knew they were low on space. I offered to keep the dog at my house until space became available. They get so many animals all the time that it was about 2-3 months before he was able to go out there and even then he was not on the floor to be adopted. They need all the help they can get. They are a wonderful shelter they just don't have the space to accomadate all the homeless animals found in the Harrisburg Area. Which just makes for more homeless animals. Please help us get this makeover...We need it.

  • 117. This shelter truly deserves a makeover!

    by: kspressley

Although some shelters in this contest may be larger and have move points, I think this shelter deserves a makeover just as much or more than any other in the contest. The staff is very hard working and is often overwhelmed by the number of animals with cages to clean. They often end up staying late, even on a Saturday or Sunday. This is the only open admission shelter in the Harrisburg PA area. As such, they are at times overwhelmed with pit bull from the inner city that have been used as fighters or bait dogs. They mayor of the city while informed of the problem, is blind to it, so the Pit Bull Terriers keeps coming in and most other rescues in the area will not take them, even if they do turn out to be adoptable. They are always overwhelmed during kitten season. The kittens just keep coming to the front desk in crate after crate. Most other local rescues fill up soon then shut their doors to intakes. The Humane Society can not. Due to the overcrowded conditions disease occasionally runs ramptent through the kennels or cat rooms. New kennels and new cat rooms would help with this problem, by increasing the true capacity of the shelter without resorting to overcrowding each room. In spite of the problems, the staff always does the best that they can. The overcrowding is the reason I can't give the shelter a 5. A 5 is perfect, and if conditions there were perfect they would not need a makeover -- they truly do !!

    Pros

    Caring staff, cleanliness, open admissions.

    Cons

    Overcrowded

    by: phall0106

Our wonderful Toby was adopted from the Harrisburg Humane Society a bit over two years ago. It was his second time for adoption from the HHS (and his last!). He is a wonderful addition to our family...but I can't help but think of all those who are wonderful cats, but were still waiting for adoption. \r\n\r\nThe staff there were incredibly helpful, the volunteers honestly believing in their responsibilities and commitments. There are so many animals put up for adoption, and not enough families to adopt.

    Pros

Lots of animals to select from

    by: MegShoeman

This shelter is the best. The staff really care about the animals and want to help people find the right animals for them. The shelter is clean and welcoming and best of all, it is a no- kill for space shelter which is more than many shelters can say. Dedication realy is the order of the day here. HSHA could REALLY use a makeover...More space would mean the capacity to give more hope to more animals in desperate need. God bless HSHA.

    Limited Space

    Cons

They don't have room for all the animals

  • 122. Caring Staff, Not Enough Space, So Many Animals

    by: cooncats

The Shelter does the best job possible with the resources and space that they have. So many people say they won't come to the shelter because it makes them sad. Time to buck up and find out how to remedy the sadness, the overpopulation and the many homeless animals in the community. I urge people to look beyond their own discomfort and visit the shelter. Learn how you can help make the lives of these animals a little better. The staff and volunteers are tireless in their efforts to provide affection and caring to all the animals. We just need more people to care and share themselves in any way they can for the sake of the animals.

    Pros

Hard working, compassionate people. It's easy to see that the staff and volunteers really cares about every animal and they do their best to provide each animlal with loving attention every day.

    Cons

    Limited resources and limited space.

We got our cat here, and the staff was wonderful. All the animals were taken care of and the place was neat and clean. The animals were loved and you can tell they were happy. (they are NOT mean dogs!!!) \r\nIt's already a crowded facility, but it's even worse now that the west shore facility shut down. These folks need a medal. They have no space, they take great care of the animals. Their service is incredible. We have adopted animals from this shelter, and despite the overcrowded conditions and the lack of staff, they followed up and checked to make sure that the adoptees were well taken care of when they left the shelter. No one deserves a makeover more than these folks!

They have done many things over the years to assist me and my kids in finding pets for friends and family. They have also helped me with injured strays that I have found. They have offered to give me food when money was short to help me feed my own pets. Thank you for all your help and always being there.

  • 130. Great experience

    by: bucknut

We have just adopted a adult female dog from the shelter. We had visited 4-5 other shelters in the Harrisburg area and were very impressed with this one. We have been responsible dog owner's for over 30 years while letting them be dogs. We have a great fenced yard with hills and trees and wanted to adopt a companion for our other female. At another shelter we had been on the list to get our home inspected before we could adopt. It had been 4 weeks and know one ever showed up. We had called 2-3 times and the answer we got back was "home inspection is not our top priority" They had mentioned they had over 17 homes to inspect!!! (Sounds like 17 potential dog owners to me) Not a priority ??\r\nEnough of my rant, so we went back to H-burg shelter and their agent was out at our house within a day or so. We were approved at the time of the visit. We took our existing dog with us to Harrisburg Shelter and the staff helped us evaultate the dogs behavior with ours. They were very knowledgable and will always recomment this shelter. We picked a great companion for ours.\r\nThanks to all the staff at Harrisburg Humane

    Pros

Common sense staff. Curtious and very professional

    Cons

Could use some larger dog runs

WE NEED ALL THE HELP WE CAN GET FOR OUR ONLY AREA SHELTER! They are overcrowded and need help. Thank God they are surviving and all that they do to shelter and feed the animals. They take in so many unwanted pets. It's ashamed people aren't more caring when they decide to buy a pet. If they don't want, it's tossed out like yesterdays trash. I'm happy to assist with anything I can do to help this shelter. We donate a lot of food and money at Christmas to the shelter via special functions at work.

  • 134. Thanking the Thankless

    by: hpcmichael

I would like to thank you for allowing me to truly give something back! Your contest allows me to thank those who often times go thankless.\r\nJust one week ago I decided to go to the Humane Society to try and find a kitten for our family. I liked what the Humane Society stood for but never really experienced a “trip” to the Humane Society. So once the decision was made I set off to our local Humane Society. What I didn’t know was that they were forced to shut down because they were unable to make ends meet. All those animals had been transferred, across the river to the Harrisburg location. So a little upset that I now had to go into the city to find a kitten I set off on my way. Once there you could not ask more of those people who give a piece of their heart to something they believe in. As soon as I walked in you could see that the shelter was doing all they could to house an over abundance of animals and handle an immediate increase in customer demand. But what really amazed me was how well these people who either volunteer or I’m sure are paid little were handling the high stress environment. I couldn’t have asked for better help in choosing our new kitten Gidget. You can hear the real care and concern in any staff member’s voice. One terrible offshoot of the now cramped spacing, is that many of the animals are susceptible to a much greater risk of kennel borne sicknesses which can result in the death of the animal. This counteracts the true mission of the Humane Society….to save animals. So I want to thank you for allowing me to hopefully be a part of helping a Humane Society that really does need a BIG thank you!\r\n

    Pros

Staff unbelievable. showed real care for animals

    Cons

    cramped quarters

It takes a special type of person to work here. I would be afraid that I would have 20 or 30 pets if I did. When I retire I would like to do more to raise money for this shelter. Since the Humane Society on the West Shore closed, it has put a strain on facility and staff; not to mention the animals.

I love the Harrisburg humane society. They are friendly and caring of their animals. It is just not fair to them that they now have the additional burden of taking on the animals from the closed down west shore shelter! I can't think of a better deserving place for a makeover than this shelter. Hope for the best people, because this place deserves it!

They have even turned their office space into extra space to house animal crates...even the Director's office...what commitment!\r\n\r\nThis shelter and our animal loving community would benefit greatly from your help.

I love the Harrisburg Humane Society, I volunteered there for my senior project in high school. I loved the animals but it was sad to see how overcrowded it is. Pros

The staff is intelligent and caring.

    Cons

    Overcrowded.

  • 140. In dire need!

    by: jet82105

As an EXTREME animal lover, having worked in a vets office, having worked at a pet store, having helped strays, having dealt with other 'no kill' shleters in the area, and belonging to a specific breed dog rescue, I am appalled that both of our shelters had to be closed and we now have "NONE". That lets nowhere for animals to go. It's bad enough they have no voices of their own and depend on us to help them but now they literally have nowhere to go. Owners who no longer want their pets, for whatever reason,s if they do have enough sense to take them to a shelter, hoping they get a new home, instead of abandoning them along side a road or something, now have no place to take those animals. It's more humane to euthanize an animal if over crowding oocurs, than it is for them to be stray and starve to death of for them to be abused. If ever there was a shelter in need of winning this contest, this would be it!!! I will pray each and every night that this shleter wins!!!

And in the face of all the overcrowding, the staff is very concerned that each animal is adopted into a not just loving, but stable home. This shelter needs more support from the community and hugely deserves a makeover.

This shelter is so very important to the Harrisburg area: however because of the need for more room and constant needs of food, cat litter, etc. the shelter struggles at times. I chose to make my United Way contribution help to fund this shelter, and some of my coworkers did also. I think this makeover would make a huge difference that is definitely needed.

I adopted my "little girl" from the shelter. It was my first experience at adoption, and my first time to the shelter. Everyone there are warm and caring people, doing a difficult job, making a difference in the lives of so many homeless animals. Kudos to each and every one of them.

    Pros

Animals well taken care of while they are there

    Cons

So many homeless animals who have to be there

  • 153. Found a wonderful dog.

    by: ztT4MP41324617

We found the best dog for our family at the old west- shore shelter several years ago. She had been spayed and tagged with a micro chip. It was hard to leave with only one pet, as so many deserve good homes. Without the services of the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area, I can't imagine what would happen to all these animals. They need a much larger facility to handle the demand for their services, as they are over-crowded now.

    Pros

Let us spend lots of time with each dog we were considering.

    Cons

More room is needed for all the pets needing new homes.

  • 154. MRick

    by: MRick

the HSHA takes the cast offs from the whole area especially inner city harrisburg. They try to not euthanize and have used every available space to be able to take in more and more and more animals. Cats and dogs are as disposable to so many people in our society as hamburger wrappers. the humane society tries to fill that void for the animals by housing and caring for their basic needs hoping some responsible people come along to take over where the first owners dropped the ball.\r\n\r\nI think they do a fantsctic job under very stressful conditions.

    Pros

They try very hard not to euthanize.

    They still do euthanize.

I have adopted several of my pets from here. Every time we took anybody home every one there was so happy for the pet and my family. Our first dog, Ranger, is one of the best dogs we have ever had and came from this humane society. We have had him 7 1/2 yrs. He is old and grey but would never had the chance to live this life if they believed in putting dogs down. He had been at the society for a couple months when we got him. Our dobie, Phoenix, is a ball of energy. She also came from here. They took their time and made sure that our home was a good fit for her. They made sure that Ranger and her got along well. My daughter loves to go just to visit the animals still there. They know my face and name. This humane society also does a vet clinic every other weekend. All my dogs have their shots because our humane society makes it affordable for us. I think they are a GREAT asset to our community!! Thank you!!

    Pros

    Cons

    Their hours kind of suck.

The Hbg Humane society would greatly benefit from additional funding for capital improvements. They are moving in the right direction and want to become a no kill organization. They are utilizing administrative space to help more animals and are working with area rescues and foster homes but they really need an updated and larger faciltity to meet the needs of homeless dogs and cats in this area.

    Pros

The Shelter works with local rescues to help to save more animals. They are also spaying and neutering the animals before they are adopted. they also do home visits for pit bull placements

    Cons

The shelter needs more space and updated space for longer term residents.

I've had a lot of cats. The one I have now I found at the Hbg shelter. She is the BEST cat. She has never made a mess in the house, she is very affectionate and she comes running like a dog when you call her. We have had her for 7 years now. I was thinking about finding her a friend recently and visited the shelter again. One of the volunteers gave me a tour of the cats and gave me a little background on each of them. All the cages were very clean. Of course they were stacked throughout the hallways due to lack of space, very sad, wish I could house them all.

    by: lkostelec

A few weeks after our beloved Socks passed on, my husband told me I needed a kitty. I told him it had to be a pair of slightly older kittens or young adults--most people gravitate towards the babies. (A pair! he proclaimed.)\r\n\r\nI found 2 littermates about 7 months old in a crate in the main visitors' area. I completed paperwork and placed them on hold and asked my daughter to drop by for a look. She was excited so we got the boys within a day or two. She had the honor of naming them--Arturo (aka Artie) and Fortunato (aka Chick), formerly Yin and Yang at the shelter.\r\n\r\nStaff required appropriate screening/paperwork before allowing us to adopt our 2 funny guys. They are both very big boys and think they rule the roost--and I guess they do.\r\n\r\nThanks shelter for introducing us to these guys!

    Pros

    Much needed facility.

    Cons

Need more space to accommodate more animals.

  • 169. Worthy of Zootoo's Help

    by: ztT4MP83733184

In 2001 I obtained from this shelter a border collie mix named Charlie. (Actually, he ran off from people who directly adopted him from the shelter and those people didn't want him anymore, so I kept him.) Charlie was a wonderful dog, extremely loving, friendly, and loyal, who dutifully chased the many squirrels from our yard. He went wherever I went. Regrettably, in 2005 he got a blood disease and I lost my best friend. But, I'd often look at him and think, 'What if the Humane Society wasn't available or able to rescue Charlie? One of the most wonderful dogs ever born would have been lost or killed.' The Humane Society of Harrisburg Area truly cares about these pets and finds homes for thousands of them. We need them, and these dogs, cats, etc. need them. They need all the help they can get.\r\nWhen Charlie died, I took a supply of dog food and treats to the Humane Society shelter, alot of canned and dry foods. I was directed to a door at the back of the facility, where a young lady met me. As I opened the hatchback of my car, she saw the food I was bringing, and exclaimed, "Oh, are we glad to get this. We just were wondering this morning, 'What are we going to do? We have no dog food here.' None." That experience enlightened me as to just how needful this organization is for support. That shelter was nearly full of dogs that day and they had NO feed for them!\r\nThat shelter referred to above had to be closed by the Humane Society in past months because it needed repairs they could not afford to make. Now their other [main] shelter overflows with pets that need a home. The people at the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area are ardent in their desire to help these animals, but desperately need outside help to provide to provide proper facilities to shelter them until the animals can be adopted. And, without support from humans and human organizations, it is the very animals we all seek to protect who will suffer or die. Help them please!

    Pros

Very caring personnel genuinely concerned for the welfare of the animals they help.

    Cons

One shelter location to serve wide metropolitan area. They had to close a nice second shelter because they could not afford adequate maintenance.

I belive they diserve a makeover because they treat people and their animalswith great care and respect. Their animals diserve space because the humain society is taking care of all their animals. They need this because they take the tmeto take care of all the animls. People can adopt all the animals if they wanted to, but because no one would do that the Humain Society takes caeof all theother animals.

    Pros

They have great service, and nice, caring and thoughtful people.

    Cons

There are no bad things except they need more space.

  • 172. Big Hearted staff, Animals First, Need more space!

    by: dar4kitties2008

This shelter has committed to not euthanize any animals because of running out of space. This is a wonderful goal, but it creates challenges when it is the only bricks and mortar shelter in the region. \r\n\r\nThe staff works with the surrounding municipalities to make sure abused animals are rescued, they work with local schools to provide educational workshops to kids so that they know how to properly care for their pets, they have a fantastic program that links "mature pets" with "mature people" in assisted living and skilled nursing facilities, they make sure that every animal brought to them has a place to sleep/live even if it means that staff are literally working on top of each other!\r\n\r\nThis shelter needs our help, and surely they deserve to win this prize!!!

    Pros

Great services, Great programs, Great outreach & education

    Cons

As this is the only bricks & mortar shelter in the area... need more space!

    by: HonestDave

Last fall my girlfriend adopted a 3 year-old cat (now named Turkleton). He's extremely loving and somewhat of a talker, but there are literally hundreds of other dogs and cats who need help. The shelter is overflowing with animals, so many that cages are being placed in conference rooms and offices. The staff is amazingly friendly and always willing to let an individual walk, pet, and meet the animals.

    Pros

    Excellent Staff, Adorable Animals,

    Cons

    Overcrowded!

  • 174. Animal Shelter

    by: cshultz

I haven't personally adopted an animal from this shelter but I have been in it and have a friend that adopted a pit bull from there. My friend is so pleased with her new dog, it is part of the family and the temperment of the dog is great. The staff does an excellent job of testing the animals to ensure they are adoptable. When I was in the shelter it was very clean and I expected it to smell like a dog kennel and it didn't, I was pleasantly surprised. The staff there was also very friendly and knowledgeable about the animals they were trying to get adopted.

    Pros

they do background checks before someone adopts an animal to make sure they will be treated well

    Cons

    The shelter has odd hours

  • 175. Does a lot with little help!

    by: Terre

I have volunteered at the shelter and am also a member of the Auxiliary. This shelter takes in all strays in a 3 county area. They receive no government funds and have to rely on donations to keep the shelter running. The staff is very caring to their residents. In the past 3 years, I have adopted 2 cocker spaniels from the shelter. One was taken from his owners due to neglect, and it took over 5 months, but they kept at it until a judge found in their favor. They used to have 3 humane officers, but are now down to 1, who is doing a great job, considering what he has to work with. I don't think the area residents know just how much this shelter does and that it has come so close to closing. They really need help to improve the shelter. They just don't have enough room. The last time I was over there, they had animals in the hallway, offices, and their "meeting room".

    Pros

    Takes in all animals

    Cons

    Shelter needs to be expanded

  • 176. Harrisburg East Shore Shelter

    by: patbow

I had no intention of getting another dog, already had one plus two cats. I went to the shelter to pick up new tags for Harley and asked if they had any small dogs and a lady at the desk mentioned they had what they thought may be a collie. I went to look and could not find the dog. Here she had just been brought in the day before and was not out for showing. I asked if I could see her. It turns out she is a mix of possibly long haired Chihuahua and something else!?! She was about 7 months old and the owners decided they didn't want her any more since they were having a baby. \r\nAnytime I adopted a shelter pet before (three other times) I was allowed to pay a deposit and once the animal was spayed/neutered, I got my deposit back. They told me they changed the rules and I could not take her until they had her spayed. I said that I already had a vet, we could set up the appointment from their phone, etc. but they said no. I said I really wanted to have her checked out before I took her home to meet my other pets. They said I could not have her until the day she was released. They would take her to the vet (they used my vet, which is a mile from my house) but I could not pick her up from the vets nor request a complete exam until she was oficially mine. I had to go back to the humane society to get her and unfortunately that day my vet closed before I could get her there. I took her home and made an appointment for the following week. In addition to her coming into a new home, meeting three other pets, just having an operation, she had some type of parasite that infected my other pets. It ended up costing me almost $700 just to get them all treated. \r\nIf they would have checked my previous records and let me have her examined and spayed, it would have saved me quite a bit of money. I can understand if it is a first time pet adopter, but if you have a record of adoption and veterinary services, your vet will write a letter that the spay/neuter appointment is scheduled, they should allow for some flexibility.

    Pros

I got three out of my four animals here

There are SO many cats and other types of animals (rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, etc.) and I just wanted to take all of them home with me. The shelter could definitely benefit from more room and is obviously in need of volunteers and supplies after making room for the animals from the West Shore shelter.

    by: flinnicker

This is our only shelter in the area and unfortunately has too many animals for the space. I feel like every time I go there it's seems to be a little more crowded, but the staff is doing the best they can with such limitations.\r\n\r\nhaving volunteered at other shelters in other states, I know how difficult it is to manage day-to-day activities and fundraise and try to educate about spay/neuter programs. If the harrisburg shelter could have a makeover, I think it would be wonderful for our community to see what progress is being made and to help promote community involvement with the society.

    by: SylviaDeppen

When our good-ole-boy, Buddy the Bassett-Longhaired dachund had to be put down in 2005, Christine Burowski, whom we know as Niki, was sensitive enough to our loss to immediately connect us with a 10-month old Basset Hound named--not by us--BOB. [And, boy, does he fit his name--all alpha dog!] Then, one year later, Niki called us with a young Basset named Crumpet--whom we later named Daisey Mae--who had a badly wounded paw that needed nursing. [We were to foster her until she healed.] She was left over from a rescue center that had gone bad. We nursed her paw for several weeks and, had our BOB not fallen in complete, infatuated love with her--yes, a romance without the "balls", if you know what I mean?--we would have returned her to be adopted. Today, BOB and Daisy Mae are a match, thanks to this shelter and one consciencious shelter worker. He thinks the sun rises and sets over her head. Her paw has been healed for a year, but Bob still likes to lick it. Ahhh..love at first sight!

    Pros

    Consciencious caregivers--especially Christine Burowski

    Cons

Dogs and Cats have to occupy their conference room--no more space.

The HSHA has been taking care of homeless pets in the Harrisburg Area for about 100 years. it's current shelter is very old and crowded. \r\n\r\nThe shelter covers 3+counties with only one humane police officer. Since Pennsylvania doesn't underwrite its animal shelters, HSHA has to rely solely on fund-raising and contributions from the public.\r\n\r\nHaving been both a volunteer and an employee, I know first hand that this shelter desperately needs an upgrade. The dog kennels are not air conditioned and the cat rooms are small. This cramped environment can lead to stressed-out animals. \r\n\r\nLet's hope HSHA wins this makeover!\r\n\r\nMosie's mom

The shelter could use a makeover now that the west shore location has been closed. It is overcrowded as the 2 locations had to merge the animals into one shelter. There isn't enough room for them all. They have animals in the hallways. The animals seem to be well taken care of however. I adopted my Chelsea in 2001. She is a big part of our lives. We found her just a few days after she was placed in the shelter and we picked her up one day after we found her. We just had to bring our beagles down to meet her and make sure that there wouldnt be a personality problem with the 3 dogs. They asked for a vet reference and a personal reference and did the check very quickly, in fact wanting to let us take her home the same day, if not for the fact we had other dogs at home. • 219. Full of Love!

    by: hholsinger

This shelter is great. Over time, we have gotten 4 of our cats, and 1 of our dogs at the shelter. They take very good care of their animals, and are always loving and affectionate towards them. They do very well, even though they receive no government funding, but rely on the community to donate needed items or volunteer some of their time. They hold events all throughout the year, which include Hogs for Dogs at the 'local' Harley store, and a big Furball Gala which includes a silent auction, dinner, and a chance for everyone to meet some of the dogs up for adoption. It is a shame, however, that their is the problem of overcrowding. I know that some of the staff have given up their offices so that they could make more room for cat cages, but they are still very tight. (This is mostly due to the West Shore shelter closing down earlier this year). Overall, this shelther is great, and I think that anyone who is looking for a new pet should definitely head over to take a look at their adoptable animals, and maybe you will fall in love with one just like I did!

    Pros

    Very compassionate towards all animals

The East Shore Humane Society is such a great shelter. My dog, Artie, came from this shelter and he quickly became a part of my family. Because the West Shore shelter closed, all of the animals were moved into the East Shore facility. Unfortunately, it is unbearably crowded so living conditions are not the best. I would hate to think of my Artie having to live in such a crowded space let alone any of the other animals without homes. They please the animals by showing them love and affection that they need to be happy. My hubby and I got our baby girl there and we commend them for all their efforts at helping animals find homes. Each animal is a part of their family and make being there an enjoyment.

    Pros

A place to feel love and affection

    Cons

    not enough space

  • 223. HSHA Deserves a make-over!

    by: HaloNIN

As a kennel staff / animal care tech. for two completely seperate shelters I think this shelter deserves the 1 million dollar make-over more than anyone. Yes, it is over populated but we DO NOT euthanize for space like most shelters. The kennel staff works extremely hard every day to make sure that every single animal in the shelter receives the care they need. We have a great Vet. that cares alot about and works hard at keeping all of the animals healthy and comfortable. It may not seem like it to some but the animals at this shelter are MUCH MUCH MUCH healthier and happier than the animals at other shelters that I have worked at / visited, because of the hard working kennel staff and great volunteers. HSHA also has great fundraisers and fun adopt-a-thons. Even so, money is still tight but we do an awesome job anyway and deserve better, so everyone should try super hard to build up as many points as we can so we can get exactly what we deserve! We need it.

    Pros

    Too many to list!

    Cons

    Overpopulated and under staffed.

  • 224. A pleasing place to be.

    by: mstaub

I'm the maintainance man at the shelter. We all try so hard to make it a pleasant place for the animals as well as the people who walk through the door.

    Pros

    Caring Staff.

    Cons

    Lack of space.

  • 225. Shelter with lots of Heart

    by: burtdog

The Harrisburg Humane Society truly cares about the animals. Unfortunately, circumstances haved caused overcrowding in the past months. This shelter needs all the support it can receive. It reaches out to the general public in many ways, but even that's not enough. Please support this shelter and the animals it cares for.

    Pros

    Truly care about the animals.

    Cons

    Overcrowded.

  • 226. Great employees who care for animals!

    by: Schmutzey

I have adopted two animals from the Humane Society of HBG and they have been the best animals I've every had! Thank goodness there are caring programs such as the HBG Humane Society to find these more-than-deserving animals wonderful homes.

    Pros

Staff genuinely cares for its residents

    Cons

Had to close West Shore location

  • 227. Wonderful Staff!

The staff is knowledgeable and very helpful!

    Cons

None that I can think of at the time!

  • 228. Desperately in need of a Makeover!

    by: cutebiscuit

This shelter is in desperate need of a new facility. Please give them a makeover.

    Pros

Great place for animals in limbo!

    Cons

    Overcrowded

  • 229. Proud to be associated with them

    by: lyschka

I give all the staff and volunteers tons of credit for the work they do for the animals at the shelter. I started volunteering several months ago and it breaks my heart to see so many animals in cages and without people to love. But those who go there give their all for those animals and every little bit helps.

    Pros

Great staff, good people to work with

    Cons

    Overcrowded

  • 230. My Experience as a Dog Walker

    by: rlambert

My experience as a dog walker has brought me the most rewarding volunteer job that I have ever had. I love to being able to take a dog out and spend time with them on their level. I pray for each dog I walk, that they will get adopted. So far my prayers have been answered for several dogs. My heart goes out for the dogs who have been at the shelter for a year or more and also for the Senior dogs. Also, I have a new understanding and heart for the Pit Bull dogs. They seem to have more desire to please and want to be loved then alot of the other dogs. Then there are the dogs who come in in pairs not wanting to be seperated. My heart hurts for there desire to want to be adopted together. One such pair, a Black Lab and St. Bernard got adopted shortly after arriving at the shelter. An answered prayer to this pair.

    Pros

Getting to know the different breeds.

    Cons

Not seeing them all adopted quickly.

  • 231. The people are what makes this shelter work!

    by: cheng30

My girlfriend volunteers a lot of time with this shelter and also fosters animals. I have seen the work that she has done with some of the animals, bringing them back from near death, fostering a litter of 7 puppies and a mama cat and her kittens she is amazing. She also helps to train the animals so that when they go to a new home, they have everything they need to survive. They do so much to try to find the right homes for all of the animals and have a great staff to help with that goal. I wish them all the best in this contest and hope that they get the recognition they deserve for all the great work they and my girlfriend do for the animals!!!!

    Pros

They work with the animals to find them great homes!

    Cons

    None!

  • 232. great service

    by: catcrazy1972

I have visited this shelter and was saddened by all the animals in the cages. They are so lonely and need loving homes desperatly. I would take them all home if I could.

    Pros

    Always helpful

    Cons

    understaffed

  • 233. too many unwanted animals

    by: ksbt

wow....it's the same all over the country. too many animals, not enough funds to take care of them all.

    Pros

    as always dedicated people

    Cons

    as always limited funds

  • 234. The Humane Society of Harrisburg

    by: jengreene

The staff works very hard to give the animals a comfortable and safe place to live. However, due to such pet overpopulation they staff is just overworked. Volunteers do all they can to give the animals some exercise and love that they so desperately need. The public really needs to be educated about the importance of spaying and neutering to avoid the abundance of homeless animals and HSHA does a great job at spaying and neutering all adopted animals prior to go to their forever homes!

    Pros

They take in every homeless animal they encounter.

    Cons

Unfortunately, due to the fact that they take in so many animals, the shelter is a bit overcrowded.

  • 235. volunteers always needed

    by: cgomora

The shelter is an awesome place to go to get a new member of the family. They could use more volunteers, although the volunteers there now rule. Everyone there has good intentions but there are limited funds as with any shelter. We need more pet owner responsiblilty and more animals spayed and neutered to prevent the overcrowding of shelters.

    Pros

    awesome animals

    Cons

    not enough money or volunteers

  • 236. Harrisburg Area Humane Society

    by: dkamp

This facility has made improvements since the new Director was hired. I continue to hope that our community will relaize that we must care for our animals and support this facility.

    Pros

It is the only animal care shelter in Dauhin County

    Cons

    It is limited for space

  • 237. HSHA

    by: dmmsheep

I often see volunteers from the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area at local community events in the Harrisburg area. HSHA seems very vocal, doing everything possible to get word out to the community about what is happening with the shelter. They participate in many local and community activities to get exposure for the animals. It is easy to see the employees and volunteers truly care about the well being of the animals they help.

    Pros

    Active in Community

    Cons

    Crowded

  • 238. This shelter is amazing.

    by: breakxdownn

I love this shelter. I come by many times and I volunteered here briefly (I would be there a lot more it time permitted!). The employees and volunteers here all truly care and want to make a difference, and this is visible while dealing with them. There are many great animals here and it is always kept very clean. I wish there was more space becuase it is so overcrowded now that the shelter on the west shore has been shut down. Keep up the good work though, guys! It is appreciated.

    Pros

    Great, helpful staff

    Cons

Not enough space (not the shelters fault)

  • 239. One of the Greatest Places to Volunteer

    by: MichelleFaith

I cannot think of a better place to volunteer than the Harrisburg Humane Society. The staff and volunteers are united for the welfare of these orphaned animals. We have limited funding and limited financial resources, yet we never close our doors to an animal in need. We take animals home to foster when the need arises. We save lifes daily through medical care plans as well as behavorial rehab programs. We have dogs who have been in our shelter for over a year...yet they will always have a place with us until their future family finds them.\r\nVolunteering here has brought a tremendous amount of joy to my life. There is no place I would rather be on a Saturday afternoon than walking one of these dogs and taking 15 minutes under a shady tree to rub a dog belly and tell that dog just how special they are.

    Pros

The compassion of the staff and team atmosphere

    Cons

    none

  • 240. HSHA

    by: tinabak

They do the best they can with what they have! People need to adopt more animals, or the Humane society needs more space!! They had to combine the animals from two shelters.

    Pros

Lots of healthy animals to pick from

    Cons

Lots of healthy animals to pick from

  • 241. HSHA Needs This Makeover!

    by: hstormin

Volunteering at the HSHA is one of the most rewarding experiences I've had. In the 5 years I have been here, many things have changed, most recently for the better. This shelter has done so much good for the community that often goes unnoticed. This makeover opportunity is very much needed and with the new leadership in place it comes at a time when it will undoubtedly be put to great use. The hard-working staff, dedicated volunteers and most importantly the animals of Central PA, deserve this makeover!

    Pros

    Too many too list

    Cons

    HSHA DESERVES a makeover!

  • 242. Caring staff w/little space

    by: kaylynewcomer

As someone who has always rescued my many pets and who got one dog and one cat from the HSHA East, I find it to be one of the best shelters I have been in as far as knowledgable and extremely dedicated staff. Unfortunately they need more space and many upgrades to meet new laws and just the general demands of being the area's only shelter.

    Pros

Staff cares and spends a lot of time w/animals

    Cons

Not enough space and outdated facilites

  • 243. A wonderful shelter!

    by: KBrubaker

This is a great shelter! They help any and all animals, even if it means the "people space" has to shrink. Both my wonderful cats came from this shelter, and their adoption process was easy and the staff was knowledgable and helpful!\r\n\r\nHelp HSHA - even the smallest things can mean alot!

    Pros

    Great shelter!!

    Cons

    Overcrowded. :(

  • 244. Compassionate, dedicated and devoted staff members

    by: mmarino

I commend the employees on their compassion, dedication and devotion to these homeless animals. The staff will go to great lengths to save a life...but medically and through behavioral rehab program. This is the only place I would adopt an animal from.

    Pros

    The compassion of the staff

    Cons

    lack of funding

  • 245. Great Shelter

    by: s2lw4u

I think this shelter is great but could use more room, due to unfortunate events it is now overcrowded and we need to expand more so we can have more animals and also have more yard to excersice with them and go on longer walks with them.

    Pros

Lots of animals to choose from

    Cons

Not enough space for them all

  • 246. Humane Society of Hbg Area

    by: cheryllee22

I have been associated with this shelter for over 10 years and never has there been a better staff in place. The people at the shelter are so dedicated to the animals that pass through the doors. The shelter desperatley needs to have a makeover to help increase the level of care as well as capacity. They have been able to do so much for the animals with so little funding. Winning this would be like winning the lottery! Both the animals and the staff deserve the best !!

    Pros

    THE STAFF

    Cons

    SPACE LIMITATIONS

  • 247. Harrisburg East Shore Shelter

    by: amywitmer

I feel this shelter would most deserve a makeover due to the fact that it's our only shelter here in Harrisburg, PA. We used to have 2, but they just recently closed the shelter on the west shore. The shelter is so overcrowded that there is hardly enough room for all of the animals. We need some help, they do not receive any state or federal funding, they survive off of donations and fundraisers, like our yearly walk/run that we do every Spring. The are in desperate need of some remodeling so we can make more room for our poor animals who need a warm place to stay and eat. PLEASE HELP!

    Pros

    Pet friendly staff

    Cons

    Overcrowded conditions

  • 248. No government funds for shelter

    by: ksnider

This shelter takes in up to 10,000 animals every year but is struggling to exist! No government funds are received and costs continue to rise. We are not able to pay employees much above the minimum wage. Our shelter is deficient in meeting the state regulations/codes and modifications are needed but funding is a serious problem. We plan fundraisers to survive but the debt continues to mount. A new executive director and board give promise for turning things around but this will take the entire community's support.

    Pros

Dedicated staff and volunteers make such a big difference!

    Cons

Funding is a problem since we rely on individual constributions.

  • 249. East Shore Shelter

    by: bailey14

Three of my four dogs have come from the East Shore and they are my heart's delight. They folks at \r\nthis shelter are truly some of the most dedicated human beings I have ever met and I celebrate their\r\nexistence every time I look into my critters' eyes.

    Pros

    their passion

    Cons

    lack of money

  • 250. Much needed help!

    by: ChristineB

HSHA is a great shelter. I volunteered there for some time and felt good about what they are doing for our community after I left. Everyone who works there is so nice and you know that they love every single one of the animals who call HSHA home. They definitely have problems with overcrowding and it is a shame because I know they could do so much better if they had the funds to do so. They deserve a shelter make-over, for the staff and most importantly for the ANIMALS!

    Pros

Friendly and knowledgeable staff, good customer service, awesome dogs and cats :)

    Cons

    overcrowded, unorganized because of overcrowding
