  • 1. Best I've seen

    by: keeperalf

I just started volunteering at this shelter...it's only 20 min. from campus. I like this shelter a lot. It has bonding rooms for customers to play with a dog or cat, and there is a cat room where customers can come in and see about 10 cats without any cages. Across from the shelter is a golf coarse where I go to walk the dogs. Also, it has a public dog park for big and small dogs. The shelter hosts many events and is very organized. There needs to be more places like this.

    Pros

    Very active, diverse

    Cons

    limited space

  • 2. Great Customer Service

    by: MelissaE

I have had contct with HSGD four times in the last 13 months. Twice I went to rent humane cat traps and twice I went to have the 4 feral cats spayed/neutered through their free Trap-Spay-Release program. The staff was very pleasant and helpful each time. They understood that even though I was bringing in feral cats, I cared about them. The staff did a good job with the cats, and all recovered without infection. Who knows how many unwanted kittens were prevented. Three of the four cats (all offspring from a neighbor's abandoned cat) still live in my shed and are actually taming down enough to let me touch them! And because they are fixed, thanks to HSGD, they stay out of trouble and stick close to home. (Don't worry about them being out in the cold, either. The shed has beds, a heat lamp, food, and a heated water dish.)

    Pros

Thet try to help everyone as best they can

    Cons

They need a bigger reception area

  • 3. Great place

  • 4. Shelter of angels

    by: Fwedwick

The folks at HSGD are angels. Staff and volunteers always go the extra mile to be sure animals get what they need. The building is clean, and the animals are the first priority. Staff is extremely flexible and accommodates whatever species appears. They have a great network of veterinary and behavior resources for exotics as well as cats and dogs. The house rabbits live like royalty while awaiting adoption. The shelter environment is tough for previously-owned pets, but Humane Society Greater Dayton makes it as palatable and comfortable as possible - way beyond expectations!

    Pros

    Great caring people

    Cons

    None

  • 5. Well socialized pets

    by: rlpteach

Find out if the cat you are adopting has been handled through the foster system. The foster parent gives background on the pets personality and can tell you if he/she is a good fit for you. The staff is very knowledgeable and caring.

    Pros

    foster system

    Cons

    currently overwhelmed

  • 10. Absolutely Positively Dedicated To Animal Welfare

    by: morrissusan

My association with the Humane Society of Greater Dayton is very uplifting. Even in the face of adversity this incredible team can always find a silver lining. This positive attitude begins with the board, the executive director, staff, core volunteers then it radiates its warmth throughout the community. \r\n\r\nThey manage to do what seems to be a challenge for many animal welfare groups. They are both animal friendly as well as people friendly. The atmosphere is accepting, inclusive, tolerant and truly altruistic. \r\n\r\nIn my opinion, this is what philanthropy is all about, giving without any expectation of being rewarded for your efforts other than working toward a common goal. Acting in a humane manner is more than just the name of HSGD, its a way of life.\r\n\r\nThanks,\r\n\r\nSusan Morris

    Pros

The climate at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton is positive, inclusive and innovative. The staff and volunteers personify the humane treatment of all creatures.

    Cons

Could use a shelter make over!!!

  • 11. Nice, clean facility - helpful staff

    by: MicheleJ

My son adopted his first Beagle from the Humane Society. He had been seized during an abuse case - was given up, with about 10 other Beagles - all in very bad physical/emotional shape. By the time he came home with us - physically he was in great shape, an well on his way to becoming a perfect member of the family.\r\nThe staff was very helpful - allowing my son to visit with as many of the Beagles as he liked - on a one-on-one, in a nice, secluded room.

    Pros

Clean facility with nice, small room for visit

    Cons

    None

  • 12. Beautiful Shelter

    by: lablover60

Went to a Mingle with our Mutts there once. What a beautiful shelter and the staff was so friendly to us. The seem to be very Rescue Friendly, and did anything they could to accomidate us. I would say it was the nicest shelter I have been in, good luck and keep up the good work

    Pros

    WOW!!!

    Cons

    none

  • 13. Nice clean shelter

    by: peytonplace2001

I have visited the HSGD several times. And each time, I was always greeted with kindness. I know there are times when staff can get very busy and forgot their manners. But I also work in a shelter, so I know the stress they are under.\n\nThe Shelter is clean and the animals are well cared for. And they are always full. Which is sad but goes to show, we all need to spay/neuter our pets.

    Pros

    clean, easy to get to

    Cons

    always full

  • 14. kitty room

    by: feminist

i LOVE the kitty room but wasn't a big fan of the staff. One man was very rude to me when i asked to see a dog that i wanted to look into adopting.

    Pros

    kitty room

    Cons

    somewhat rude staff

  • 15. They Work Hard

    by: masihkap

The staff care about the animals and only want what's best. The downside is that they have seen so many horrors, some of the people can be a bit cold. They also want to help and are willing to discuss issues (food, where pet stores are, give list of local veterinarians, talk about their own pets, training solutions), but when they get busy they seem to have a hard time coping. This could be a under staffing issue. They really like their volunteers and are very nice. Dirty cages/runs are cleaned quickly and efficiently. I've volunteered there and have a dog/two cats from there. They just put a dog park which is nice to bring the community in and promote the shelter. It's bad because people have been dumping cats/dogs into the park.

    Pros

Staff care about animals, nice to volunteers, willing to help

    Cons

Some of the staff can be cold, bad service when there's a lot of people

  • 16. Very Caring Shelter

    by: sparkygirl3277

We adopted our English Setter from this shelter in 2002. She is still an awesome dog and great companion. The staff members were eager to assist us in finding a dog that would fit into our family! If you live in this area, it is a great place to look for your next companion!

    Pros

Very clean shelter, with a great selection of pets!

    Cons

    None
