I have volunteering for the HSEC for 2 years. They are a facility that is run exclusively on donations and fundraising (no state or government support), and yet at this time provide excellent veterinary care, and safe and comfortable housing for all the animals in the facility. All cats are tested for FeLV/FIV, vaccinated and spayed/neutered prior to adoption, all dogs are heartworm tested, treated if appropriate, vaccinated and spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Potential adoptees are screened to ensure that the animals are going to protective and caring homes. I am very pleased with the efforts made (on a very limited budget, no less) by the excellent staff members and volunteers that take care of these great animals.

    Pros

very hard working on limited budget

    Cons

    would love a "makeover"!

    Cons

    Some are there too long

    by: rusfritze

Fantastic shelter and great staff. I am biased since my daughter works there but at the same time it is a great place. A little history - My daughter (a college student) did some volunteer work and met a dog. She became convinced that Gentle Ben was waiting there just for her. All of the staff took their time to meet with me and answer all my questions about Bens special medical needs (alot of time since I was an overly concerned father). They even allowed us to take him to a private vet for an examination. Everything checked out and Gentle Ben joined our family. A few weeks later after he had settled in, my daughter decided that she wanted a job. Because of her experience working with the staff and management and being an animal lover she called the shelter and inquired about any openings. Long story short she has now been working there almost a year and has us involved with them even though we are over 200 miles away. She has even decided to make this type work her career upon graduation. The staff takes great care of the animals and gets family and friends involved when needed. The management also becomes involved with the staff and everyone is one big family - some with 2 legs some with 4 legs. If an animal needs special care they make sure they find the right foster family so that the animals will thrive when finally placed with the right "human". This is a very caring place and the animals that they are "sheltering" know that they will have a place to live forever even if the right person never comes along to adopt them.

    Pros

    Very caring staff

    Cons

The building needs to be updated
