This is the first shelter I volunteered in Savannah. They have a volunteer orientation and then the rest is up to you. I have a changing schedule, so I pop in when I can and bathe or walk the dogs. They also take in cats, hamsters and rabbits. The cats have a nice enclosure and can see outside. Some are in large groups. Some are in cages. The animals that are on the floor are also there until they are adopted. So there is no chance of you going back to have found your dog euthanized which is important to me mentally. The dogs need walkers to volunteer their time to stretch their legs. An avid runner visits weekly and takes a couple dogs for a run.

    Pros

nice shelter, clean, open air, animals well taken care of, use shot to euthanize

    Cons

Could use more space, better bedding to get animals off concrete, had trouble with gas chamber

The appearance is clean and inviting. I was particularly impressed with the Cat Room which has 2 separate large areas for specified cat populations to live and exercise comfortably as well as an area with stacked up cat cages which are clean and supplied with fresh food and water and clean litter boxes. There is a nice Interview Room where you may socialize with your prospective adoptee. A loyal staff of volunteers come to walk and play with the dogs daily. My experience with the center includes adopting a wonderful lab mix who had been left by a deployed military person. My dog had been there the longest of all and I am still scratching my head as to why.

    Pros

    caring people

    Cons

    can't think of any

I visited the shelter about a week ago and i love the mural on the outside of the building. The layout is great. There is an area in the front for the dogs to hang out. There was someone walking the dogs, I had a good first impression.

    nice appearance

  • 6. One of the best shelters!

    by: Sisa

I live in a neighborhood where people just leave their pets behind when they move. I started feeding these poor things, getting them fixed, providing medical care and bringing one by one to shelters to give them chance to find a home. We have brought some of them to this shelter and they have never turned any of these animals away and promised to do anything they can for them. It is definitely one of the best shelters in the area.

    Pros

Caring staff, do not turn away animals!

    Cons

    None

  • 9. Lost Dog

    by: itismedia

My mother-in-law babysat my Lab last year and he got out. I was frantic when I got home. The staff at the shelter was wonderful. They gave me a list of places to call and check. I put a poster in their book. They checked their shelter everyday and even called me when another yellow Lab was brought in. I eventually found him (he had been taken in by a family), but the shelter followed uo every couple of days until I called with the great news.

    Pros

    Very friendly and helpful

    Cons

    It is a kill shelter

  • 10. GOOD JOB WITH LIMITED FUNDS

    by: dixiepets

The Humane Society in Savannah GA has lots of dedicated people helping the animals in their care. They have fundraisers like the Mutt Strutt coming up and the Doggy Carnival in the spring to help get money for the care of the animals but so much more is needed. With winter coming they are in need of blankets, and towels, but will take anything donated.

    Pros

    Helps community

    Cons

    Needs more money
