  • 1. They are great

    by: meganrenee

They really need to get the chance to add on. If they could take in more dogs they would be able to help so many. In the county they are in most of the pets are seen as disposable. They are the only ones in the area doing anything to help and they don't have enough room to help nearly enough. So many people take their pets out and end their lives because they feel they have no other options because they are not able to take them to the humane society due to lack of resources. They really do desierve this and need this desprately. Barron Co. Humane society truely would be able to help save So many lives with this money.

    Pros

They do the best they can with what they have

    Cons

They do not currently have enough room

  • 2. Barron Rocks!

    by: JayGilbertson

Back in 2001, we moved to Prairie Farm and seeing as this old farm house came with many, many un-invited guest---mice---we needed a cat and bad. So off to our nearest Humane Society we headed and it was there that we met Kitty. Or, she met us. The cool thing is that we got there late, and the staff not only was just amazing, but they insisted we take our time and make sure that that was indeed the cat for us. She was and is and it was just the best experience ever! So---give them the money!!! Thank you... j

    Pros

The staff there is simply, the best.

  • 3. Butch

    by: outdoorsgirl325

My husband and I adopted Butch ( a dobermann and lab mix) from the shelter 4 years ago . He was the only one that wasn't barking or jumping up on his kennel door ..he just sat there being very quiet and the sad puppy face look on him is what really made us fall in love with him. To this day he now has a buddy to play with that my husband and I took in after my mom's house burnt down. It was only suppose to be a temporary thing at first but we just fell in love with Moose ( a golden retriever and golden lab mix) and so did Butch. To this day these two are completely inseperateable ( i can't spell if i tried! ) lol! Moose just loves playing with butch and trying to get butch to play with him he playfully bites butch's ankles which is sooo funny. If I could've taken home all the dogs that needed a place I absolutely would've in a heart beat !! No second thoughts about it. I recently visited the HSBC and just adored the animals they have there and the sad little faces on some of the cats and dogs just broke my heart . And then there was the dogs just barking with excitement soo wanting to get out and run and play. Just wanted to let HSBC know that I voted for you guys as much as I possibly could and am keeping my arms, legs, fingers and toes crossed in hopes that you'll win the million dollar makeover because you sooo deserve it and absolutely need it to house and take care of these innocent animals and to make it alittle easier to give them what they need. Also making it more convient to spay and neuture them with out having to take them to other places to have this done along with the shots that these little guys need.

    Pros

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff and helpful

    Cons

Not enough room for more animals that need a home and play area not big enough for dogs to run and play and wayyyy too many dangerous holes

  • 4. Barron is NOT barren!

    by: bluedorn

Barron, WI is obviously not barren when it comes to stray and/ or unwanted animals, as the shelter is always full and with a waiting list. The opportunity for this small, mid-western town to have a million dollar makeover would be an integral part of continuing to make this area a vital asset to the immediate community and surrounding small towns!

    Pros

excellent staff and well taken care of animals

    Cons

    shelter needs to be expanded

    by: greggiesgirl

I adopted both of my cats from Barron County and recommend it to my friends who are looking for a pet for their family. • 12. Volunteers are Heart and Soul

    by: SIserman

I work down the same street that this shelter is on, and there seems never to be a shortage of volunteers to walk the dogs. People of all ages and walks of life come to give these canines a taste of joy and freedom, no matter the weather. Daily I pass these dogs in my car and their exuberance at being outside and walking with a human friend is touching. It is heartrending to think that as they make the turn on the dead end street that they must return to confinement. Truly this shelter is in need of funds, their compassion for animals knows no limit. Let's give them a hand at giving these animals the best chance they've got. We're all they've got.

    Pros

    No shortage of volunteers

    Cons

    Definite shortage of funds

    by: krista131

I volunteered at this Humane Society for a school project a few years ago. I felt the shelter was a great place and they took very good care of the animals with what they had. The onyl con I had is when I did my service I didn't feel real appreciated but everyone was always so busy so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Other than that the staff was very friendly with all of the customers and wonderful with the animals.

  • 23. How sad

    by: cruiser21

This shelter is in desperate need of an upgrade/makeover. They cannot devote the time neccesary to these animals so they have a complete "human experience" it is sad that they can barely affordto keep their doors open in good weather, in the winter it sounds as though it is a struggle just to keep the animals water from freezing. Since they are in a rural part of the state it sounds as though they have "competition" from the locals, the advantage they could have is being able to "fix" the animals that come through their doors so they don't keep contributing to the overpopulation that already exists in so many places around the country.

    Pros

This is an "open door" shelter which means they will accept all(if not most) of the animals that come throught their doors

    Cons

They do not have enough space to operate on a day to day basis

  • 24. a rewarding day

  • 25. A long time supporter of HSBC

    by: dodger602002

I've been a long time visitor to the HSBC - from when it was a tiny little shelter in Rice Lake and I would volunteer with my kids to walk dogs on Sundays, to when it was built in Barron. I started fostering cats from HSBC in 2000-2001, and fostered singles and new mamas and their kittens for several years. This was very rewarding and the staff were so helpful to me. I had a friend who was fostering cats in Las Vegas, and I called the HSBC and asked if I could help in the same way. They were thrilled. This allowed my children to see birthing cats and new kittens - something they wouldn't see with ours since I always spay and neuter. My children were great socializers of the kitties, and they all went on to adoptive homes. Our writeups helped tell potential adopters more about the animal. I have since fostered for Washburn Co as well. And facilitated adoptions from these shelters by talking them up and keeping posted on the pets they have available. I hope all the turmoil of the past few years in Barron County culminates in great service to the animals. I have always been impressed with all the staff I've encountered - their committment and passion for the work. You don't get into this work for the glory of it, or the money. That is for sure. The publicity of this contest has been wonderful, and I commend all of you at the shelter for making this so successful.

    Pros

Enthusiastic and committed to the care of animals

    Cons

    Limited by its resource base

  • 26. HSBC was the only place we thought of for adoption!

    by: SuV

My daughter went through the adoption process at HSBC several years ago and when she had chosen her special dog, she was told that someone else was also being considered for the adoption of the same dog. This shelter puts in a considerable amount of time in pairing pets with prospective families.

    Pros

    thorough adoption process,

    Cons

    limited space

  • 27. So much love, so little space, money, etc...

    by: buddylilly

This is an incredible place. Just go and visit and you will see what I mean. They make do with so little and give so much. I am so happy that I have gotten involved, even in just a small way. But I believe that no effort is too small. It warms my heart to know that there are so many people in this world that care for animals and will do what ever it takes to make sure they are taken care of.

    Pros

Staff, volunteers, love and respect of animals

    Cons

Other than being too small - nothing!

  • 28. Changes for the Best

    by: mitty24

I visited the shelter as a volunteer about 3 years ago and recently came to visit about a week ago. I could not beleive how much more of a positive atmosphere there was around the place this time around compared to the last! Turning dozens of animals away on a weekly basis only to have them mistreated and left stray again was not only heart-breaking, but also in-'humane'. Taking in animals from surrounding counties now and not being overpopulated and maintaining a little more order around the shelter seems to be working in favor of the facility!

    Pros

    Becoming a low-kill open-door shelter

    Cons

Animals need to be put down, but that is unavoidable.

  • 29. Barley & Hops

    by: wandajohansen

I adopted Barley & Hops, sister tortoise shell kitties, from HSBC in November of 2008. The volunteers who were there were so excited that I was adopting both kitties. The staff was quick to make my adoption go smoothly. I love my kitties and very much appreciate that HSBC was there to keep them until I could come to find them. We are a happy family now.

    Pros

    Excellent staff, patient and kind

    Cons

    Needs more space

  • 30. Great shelter~

    by: remiandlouie

I felt very comfortable there~ Got to spend as much time with the animals as I needed & took one home! Staff friendly & all areas very clean. Staff working in all animal rooms at all times!

    Pros

Animals well cared for in a clean, safe enviroment~

    Cons

    None at this time~

  • 31. An awesome shelter!

    by: mounces

These people are so great! The animals are treated well and they even take in some of the animals that cannot be housed in Dunn County because of overcrowding. If BOTH Dunn and Barron County Shelters could be funded it would be an amazing miracle because both need the help so badly. SHOW THEM THE MONEY!

    Pros

Staff attention to animals and their adotive people!

    Cons

Not enough space for necessary services!

  • 32. Great place!

    by: dougman42

We visit shelter offen, just to see what type of breeds they get in. Wife and i enjoy doing this. And socializing with the great staff there. The place sure could use renovating though. Sure hope we at least stay in top ten. Also pray they win the million dollar make over. It would be very much appreciated. NOTE: SO AMERICA PLEASE VOTE FOR HSBC CENTER! THANKS DOUGMAN42

    Pros

Very helpful staff, Good choice of breeds

    Cons

    Needs renovation!

  • 33. It's great to know they are there

    by: gbpjl

I have adopted a dog from HSBC and could not have been happier! The staff and volunteers are truly dedicated to the welfare of the animals in their care. I'm proud of this facilty and hope that a makeover becomes possible! In this northern climate, the shelter is an absolute must to help care for and place those animals that need our help.

    Pros

Great staff, great programs, great volunteers!

    Cons

    Too small, needs updates/expansion

  • 34. BIG Shelter in a TOO SMALL container

    by: barseyboy

I was very impressed with what these people "DO with what they GOT". The cleanliness and caring shows in every inch of this too-small shelter. The animals are in clean cages, all had clean water and food available. I was very satisfied with all but the shortage of room. It is obvious that more animals are there than should be logically housed. Great volunteers saw to it that each pet had exercise or play time. The puppy room was a riot of rolling and tumbling furry critters. The staff is SO caring and they have great ideas for raising money, such as an awesome calendar for dogs and one for cats.....but not bringing in enough $$$ to really make the necessary difference. They need a pot of gold to be able to run as they are certainly willing and capable of doing. Super people.

    Pros

CLEAN, friendly staff, great volunteers, great programs

    Cons

too SMALL, needs more room, medical upgrades

  • 35. Love Connection

    by: debob103

Great place. They found me a great dog. It is always clean and the animals are treated well.

    Pros

Finding love connections is their specialty! Clean and friendly place to go to find a new friend to love and take home!

    Cons

Not enough room for the cats- They could use the remodel

  • 36. You GO Guys!

    by: lmhatlestad

I have had the pleasure of meeting Tina Norwood, who volunteers for the shelter and shows every sign of caring deeply about the shelter and the animals helped there. I can't help but think from reading the reviews, reading the shelter bio, and knowing Tina's level of pride in this shelter, that it is truly a place that a homeless little dog or cat would be lucky to find themselves in. So many shelters are cold and impersonal. The Barron Co. HS seems anything but. Good shelters need good support, and all the advantages they possibly can get. As a dog rescue coordinator, I understand to the core the important role shelters play in saving lives, and I understand the incredible significance of a shelter that cares for each animal with compassion and love, rather than just something to "warehouse." GO, H.S. of B.C.!!

    Pros

Very kind volunteers who are proud of the shelter!

    Cons

I do not know of a con to mention

  • 37. Petco Eau Claire Wi

    Cons

  • 38. Volunteers

    by: kimberley88

During my visit to the Barron shelter with my five year old, we decided it would be a good experience to volunteer. The staff we asked about volunteering was very nice and helpful with our decision, she showed us around and explained what we would be doing. The shelter was very clean and all of the animals had full food and water dishes and clean kennels, they are also taken outside and into playrooms so they have time to run and interact. This shelter is great and one of the best kept and caring that I have ever seen.

    Pros

The staff was very helpful and polite

    Cons

    Small shelter, they should expand

  • 39. Barron County Shelter

  • 40. help and staff for Barron Human Society

    by: horses1

I had the honor of working with Dorthy Quinn and Dr. Brenda Tabor-Adams and staff on the recovery of 4 abandoned ponies/horses. They were very kind and human in how they handled all of the negelected horses with a soft, kind touch in corraling and caring for them. One has been adopted with the other 3 waiting for a home that has lots of love. If I had the space, they would come home with me. Dr. Brenda is doing an excellant job of taking them from being afraid of a human being to looking forward to her attention and love. Please give them a good home. They are worth it!

    Pros

Excellant people - staff including vets that are very caring of the animals and people

    Cons

Not enough financial aid and room to make it the best ever

  • 41. great shelter

    by: libbyrapos07

the staff was VERY nice. the shelter is clean and professional. i brought in a puppy i had found on the road. i thought of keeping him but found out early on that he had food aggresion. i took him to the shelter. i was able to bring him before shelter hours (the phone was answered before shelter hours which REALLY impressed me- most businesses wont do that). i let the staff know that deal, they assured me they would make sure he went to a good home that was aware of his behavior problems. great place! :)

    Pros

    Cons

  • 42. Chance

    by: rwisti

I found the love of my lifetime at this shelter, His name was Jasper, but I renamed him Chance. I gave him a Chance as well as him giving me one! I adopted him in 2002. Chance was a pitbull and when I first met him, he was attacking the cage that held him in. Well, I first shied away from him, but when he settled down and then sat down, he cocked his head and looked at me. That was all it took!! I fell in love with him! The staff at the Humane Society of Barron County let me take him outside and walk him. Well Chance showed me what a smart old dog he was, he sat when told, shook hands very willingly and I then realized his training was far from done. In the next 4 years I owned Chance, he became my constant companion. We drove to Arizona together, he learned how to speak and say Ma-Ma and of course , I Love you! We visited HSBC a few times and he went inside with sheer enthusiasm, he loved those folks in there, as much as they loved him. He was the best dog I have ever and will ever own. Unfortunately Chance has passed on, his ashes will be buried with me, but he will never be forgotten. His photos adorn almost every room in my home, as well as my childrens. He was a true blessing and I will always, ALWAYS hold the highest regard for the kind folks at HSBC!! They could have put Chance down, being that he was a Pit Bull, but they saw in him something that only true animal lovers could see, they saw a truly magnificent animal that deserved a second chance!!

    Pros

Wonderful people taking care of wonderful pets!!!

    Cons

    none

  • 43. Sparrow

    by: bergmm

We adopted Sparrow from the HSBC almost a year ago. We were impressed with the fiendliness of the staff. The shelter itself is in need of some help. Since we have adopted Sparrow, I know they have hired new staff, so hopefully the new staff is a little more knowledgable! We were told our puppy probably had worms, that was why his belly was bloated, when in actuality, they were overfeeding him! He didn't eat for 2 days after we got him because he was so full! All in all, we are happy with our choice to adopt from them. We got an adorable puppy who is wonderful with our children!

    Pros

    Customer service

    Cons

    Cleanliness/appearance of the shelter

  • 44. The adoption of our dog Zeke

    by: awarner

7 years ago, after the loss of our Dog, my family wanted another Dog. After a lot of begging I finally gave in and stopped by the Barron County Animal Shelter to find a dog. Well there I found this cute little dog sitting in the corner shaking as he was taken away from an abusive person. Lucky for us because he is the love of my life. After time and patience he has grown to love and trust humans again. He is has been in our lives for many years and they have all been rewarding. He loves to camp, cuddle with kids when they are not feeling well, and even play with the cow. Thanks to the Barron County Animal Shelter for there love that they gave him and nursed him back to health just so he could find a good home. My family loves him with all of our hearts. And he knows what it is like to have love in his life.

    Pros

    loving staff

  • 45. My Experience

    by: DawnMarie27

I have adopted all 4 of my pets from the Barron Humane Society. They are all wonderful animals who needed a loving home and have adapted well. I love being able to give these animals a great home to live in and a new life. My son and I love to stop at the humane society and visit the animals there on a regular basis. My son loves animals and likes to walk the dogs. We try not to get too attached but we ended up getting another addition to our family the last time we were there. They are all great people at the Humane Society to give their time to help the animals who have no voice.

    Pros

Great people who you can tell truly care about the animals and finding them a good home.

    Cons

They have a very small facility to try to house all the animals but you can tell they do their best.

    by: RLBC

Adopted my very first kitten from the Barron County Humane Society. She was a all white domestic short hair. She was a wonderful cat. Still like to stop in once in awhile to look at all the animals. They sure could use some more room! Everything is clean and orderly tho.

  • 49. Friendly Service!

    by: allisonlgr

We adopted our kitty from this shelter last spring and have been SO happy every since. My girls and I went in several times to 'look' not really expecting to take one home, but the people were so helpful and knowledgeable that we couldn't resist. There was a nice room that we could 'play' with our kitty in before we decided on her. Each cat had it's own space which was clean and didn't smell. The dog room was a bit loud, but what do you expect with barking dogs? =)

    Pros

Friendly and knowledgeable staff, easy to work with

    Cons

Dog room a bit loud, chilly

  • 50. Reasons For Love

    by: Clonedkidd

I did not adopt a pet from here, but saw heard about them on my local news broadcast. Because of them I went on a search for someone who just could not take care of the animals they had. I decided to get a puppy to love and care because of this shelter. I just couldn't see a helpless puppy being abandoned because the previous owner could not take care of it.

    Pros

    Loving staff, and Very Intelligent

    Cons

    In need of better Facilities

  • 51. A wonderful place with wonderful & friendly staff

    by: Denise1959

I just want to commend the Barron Humane Society because I think they're a great facility. All staff that I've met are so caring and compassionate about the animals that come through their door. The shelter is a small facility that could definitely use some improvements, but they make the best with what they've got and that's what's most important!

    Pros

Very friendly and welcoming staff, clean facility

    Cons

    None

With a new change in board and management the shelter is really undergoing a great change and new attitude. The new staff is energized and is really putting the word out of what they need to keep the shelter going. Money and space is always a problem but they are brainstorming all sorts of fundraisers and awareness events.

  • 54. Loved and Loving Pets

    by: jaxnr79

We have adopted many pets from the Barron County Humane Society. They are the best pets ever. We adopted PJ from the Shelter when it was still located in Rice Lake (many years ago). He was the most loveable cat ever. If you weren't feeling well he would come lay on you and purr and purr. It was always like he was saying "pet me and you'll feel better". We have gotten many pets at the Humane Society since. You can tell that the staff takes really good care of the animals in the shelter. The animals are always clean and healthy. They have a program setup with area veterinary clinics that offer a discount on spays and neuters. This is especially important in a rural area like Barron County, where a lot of people wouldn't be able to afford the surgery.

    Pros

Great Staff, Great Animals for Adoption

    Cons

They need more space and this make over

  • 55. Hardworking with tons of potential

    by: cloudy18

This is a hardworking shelter with a ton of potential. I think the shelter has become more well known bc of this contest, and they should really use that and try to expand it, get the community involved, etc. It seems like the volunteers have a wide scope of knowledge and really are doing all they can for the animals. They also want to make progress, not just keep things the way they are. I have seen shelters that have better facilities but don't do much for the animals. I am glad the shelter has adopted an open door policy. I also like that they work with other shelters in the Cities to place more animals. Animals are often transported to the Cities to have a better chance at adoption. I think this shelter has come a long way in a couple of years, and can go much farther. Keep up the good work.

    Pros

    knowledgeable volunteers, community involvement

    Cons

needs some work on living quarters for animals

  • 56. great experience years ago!

    by: rencsimilcsi

I will always remember the sweet dog, Krinkle my family adopted from the HSBC in the mid 90's. I was in middle school and my best friend had also just adopted a dog from HSBC. She and her family had such a great experience, my parents decided to let me get a pet too! We both took our dogs to the dog project in 4H. HSBC has sweet animals and great people to work with. I also worked for the highway department while I was in college. Unfortunately, sometimes I would find pets who had been hit on the highways. I took collars to HSBC and the nice people there did the hard job of contacting the families and telling them about their loss. Thanks HSBC!

    Pros

    friendly, caring people. nice facility.

    Cons

    by: colebai99

We found our Tyler Boy at HSBC. He was clean, happy, relaxed, well-fed. The Director and staff are well-educated and experienced in this field. All involved have huge hearts for the animals and do a tremendous amount of work to find permanent homes, rescues, and foster homes for the animals they take in. I am very impressed with the professional, supportive, and friendly atmosphere at the Humane Society of Barron County.

    by: marigold

Yesterday, I came for a second time to see the dog I was interested in, and because I have somewhat special circumstances, I was rather nervous about whether the dog would be a good fit, and whether, if things did not work out, I could return her with no hard feelings, within the two weeks. Also, the first time i saw her, she was still suffering from an ar infection that was present when she was turned in, and she has recieved all the vet care she needed, and I did not have to buty my own medicine for her which I have heard of people having to do. I was made to feel at ease and in fact, did bring Dora home. she has been wonderful, even on the first day! I thought that the shelter was very clean, and the dogs were being cared for very well.

    Pros

    Very helpful

    Cons

  • 62. Adoption day!

    by: Carmensmom

The Barron County Humane shelter has been my favorite charity since adopting Carmen in 2000. I found her on Petfinder and the caption asked "won't you be the one"...as soon as I saw her picture I knew I would be. The folks at the shelter devote themselves to their pet visitors. They work under extremely low budgets, deal with some unpleasant situations, and crowded conditions but they never lose the faith or the love. When I walked in to get Carmen, I was frantic watching as people took kitties home. I hoped that wasn't Carmen, but there she was, waiting for me.I thank them all so much for keeping Carmen safe until she found me. Bless you!!

    Pros

Very caring staff, well lit, clean, follow up calls

    Cons

    Need more space for kitties!!!!

  • 63. an angel with a tail..Licorice aka Truman

    by: tozey

    Licorice the Angel with the Tail My parents walked, worked, and lived side by side for 61 years. When my dad died at 94, my shy mother was living alone for the first time in her 83 years. I was desperate to bring her comfort and companionship. With her blessing, I went to our Barron County Humane Society to find her a cat. I chose carefully and looking back, I chose well. Licorice and my Mom bonded and fell in love within a few days. It became clear that the big black cat was trying to take care of her in his own way. He would nag her to get dressed in the morning. His basic care got her moving about her home. He gave me visual cues on how she was feeling. I had developed the habit of stopping by every evening to check on her. If Mom was feeling well, Licorice watched for me from the bedroom window. If she had a bad day, Licorice would be lying on the back of her chair with paws resting on her hair. A reaction to medication made her sleep too much and I stopped by early one morning to check on her welfare. Every twenty minutes, Licorice would leave my lap, go into the bedroom, and loudly demand that she wake up. Licorice has an extrovert “it is all about me” personality. His just being in the room made it easier for my quite mother to make conversation with caregivers who came most days. In four short months, my mother was in the hospital for the last time. The Hospice workers wanted Licorice brought to say goodbye to my mother. He knew instinctively what to do. He crept up close to her ear, purred his little heart out, and was so careful not to touch anything but her hair. This professional lap setter seemed to know that other touching would cause her pain. After a time, Licorice left my mother’s side and came slowly over to the side of the bed. He carefully studied the bubbling oxygen and the shifted his gaze to mine. We locked eyes for a long time. At that moment, we were not a human and an animal, we were just two of God’s creatures who both knew without a doubt, that we were about to lose someone we loved. My father in law and my mother passed away with 24 hours of each other. The next 2 weeks were a painful blur of the disposition of earthly remains and earthly possessions. I kept the recliner my mother had rested for the last months of her life. I was with Licorice when he saw the recliner for the first time since Mom had died. I was curious to see his reaction. He wailed in distress and then he did something that brought comfort to me. Still wailing, he leaped to the back of the recliner, but he did not look down to where his beloved master had always sat. Licorice looked heavenward, scanning back and forth. This angel with a tail must have some inside information and who am I to argue. Bless your heart Licorice……may you have a long and happy life. {Licorice lives with us now and his name has been changed to Truman. Ruth would still know him know him….no matter what the name}

I adopted a cat from here many years ago but, he was a very special cat to me. His name was Sneakers andyou need to watch out what you name your pets as they tend to be exactly that! LOL~~ He was very sneaky. He passed away at 9 yrs. old due to a very mean black widow and we were away for several days and didn't know. I was heartbroken and still am. I will always miss him. • 78. Merri, Formerly Known As....

    by: scherrikae

When I went into HSBC, I was greated with a warm welcome... Not only from the staff, but by our newest family menber Merri. She did her best to entertain me and allowed me to sit with her for about an hour... As I was petting her I noticed how fresh and clean she smelled. It was tough to leave her that day, but after the loss of our beloved Shadow I knew this was a discussion for the family. After agreeing that this seemed to be a wise decision, I went back to start our adoption. Merri was there waiting with the rest of her playmates and, as I picked her up I noticed she smelled just as pleasant as the first time we had met. Well, needless to say, Merri or should I say Schannelle (name changed to match her fresh and clean scent), came home with me and has since become a very loved and treasured member of our family. Thank you HSBC for of your efforts and committment to our community!!

  • 81. great staff

    by: maxbrockrusty

like i stated the staff is great and willing to help everyone. they provide a great deal of information on each pet and more. i am a sheriff's deputy and work with them often. this is a very well ran humane society. they do a great job with the limited space they have. winning this would be great for them and for our community. they have been more than busy for along time and they run out of room quickly. the facility is extremely clean and all animals are in great health. they bring animals from near death to the healthiest you could see. one dog that comes to mind was a small black dog that was underweight. it was so bad this dog could not stand, you could see her bones. within no time the staff got this dog back on its feet and it was strutting her stuff. i believe this dog has since been adopted and she is one happy healthy pup.

    Pros

    all staff are great

  • 82. The best shelter I have seen

    by: helpbarron

I am so impressed with the Barron Humane Society shelter. The staff is very loving to the animals. They are very knowledgable - they work well together and with the public. The shelter is well maintained and the animals all seem very healthy. This is a shelter dedicated to finding homes for all of their animals if possible - with the focus being on a "no kill" policy, which I really appreciate. I moved here from Illinois and they only kept animals 1 week or less due to space restrictions - which is horrendous. I think the new management has made tremendous strides on behalf of the animals they are entrusted with and are committed to finding them all homes and treating them like they are their family until "new families" are found.

    Pros

Staff is wonderful, shelter is always clean and very happy animals!

    by: chitown

I knew shortly after I started Zootooing in November that I'd have to switch to a different shelter...but which one? I checked out several in the Makeover II contest, even visited the Web sites of a few. I picked the Humane Society of Barron County, even though I've never been there, because I see spirit and drive in HSBC's people. That I made a good choice is evidenced every day, especially lately, by how they rise to meet challenges and enthusiastically keep chugging along, like the Little Engine, to win their much-deserved new shelter.

    by: mattchanat

I found HSBC through petfinder.com. I fell in love with a photo of "Natasha" a border collie/husky mix who looked just like my late border collie/husky (also a "Tasha"). I communicated with the staff by email and they were always prompt and great to deal with . They had a lot of information about Natasha and I could tell they had all spent a good deal of time getting to know her and were able to answer my questions about her behavior and habits. Natasha was a bit of a special case because she is very smart, very sensitive, and very energetic (after all, she is a border collie/husky mix!) She had already been returned to HSBC once because she was too active for the person that adopted her (or too smart?) I could tell the staff was being very careful about who she would go to next--they wanted someone who would understand her needs. Luckily, I'd had 2 bc/husky mixes in the past (one for 12 yrs, one for 14--both shelter dogs), and currently had a bc/lab mix and a bc/aussie mix, so I knew what I was getting into. I somehow convinced my sisters to make the 5 hour trek to Barron with me on a cold day in January. We arrived later than expected (got lost thanks to mapquest) but the staff stayed and waited for us. I spent a little bit of time with Tasha outside and all she wanted to do was climb into my lap (she was only about 35 lbs, so it was okay). Because of lack of space, Tasha was being kept in a large pet porter when not in one of the exercise runs. This wasn't ideal (and shows you why HSBC needs to win the contest!) but I could tell that the staff was doing everything they could to make sure the dogs were clean, comfortable, well-socialized and exercised. In fact, the whole place was remarkably neat and clean (though absolutely full of cats and dogs.) I have volunteered at various shelters and rehab centers and I know how hard it is to keep up with that many animals. They really did a fantastic job. We were given a tour of the whole shelter and were very impressed. It was hard for us to leave without adopting more animals. One of my sisters and her husband are vets and my other sister a former groomer. Among our families we have 12 dogs, 14 cats, and 20 horses. Unfortunately we just didn't have any more room at the time! Once everyone said goodbye to Tasha we were on our way back. She curled up on my lap in the back seat of the car and either slept or watched me the whole way home (not quite what I expected!) When I introduced her to the older dogs she was submissive so everything went smoothly. Mu husband adored her (she also tried to climb into his lap) and so did my son. She did chase the cats for awhile, but just for fun and soon learned not to. I stayed in touch with HSBC for a little while. They were kind enough to send me some prints of Tasha's website photos. We've had Tasha for 2 years now. Everyone who sees her thinks she's just about the best looking dog they've ever seen. She is also quite a "talker" and keeps us laughing. She loves snow and to steal toys from the other dogs and taunt them into chasing her. I know I'm not supposed to play favorites, but she's probably the coolest dog I've ever had. Our old bc/aussie mix passed away last fall. It's getting to be about that time when I start figuring I have room for one more....When the time comes, I'll certainly keep an eye on the HSNC website!

    Pros

We have worked with the staff of the Barron County Shelter for quite sometime now and I have never left this place in any sort of angry manner.\r\nEveryone has been very nice and ALWAYS in a good mood!\r\nMy family fostered a Siberian Huskey from the shelter for a month it is just too bad for us she wanted to play too rough with our smaller dogs. \r\nI had to call and take her back and expalined through many tears why. They had absolutely no problem with me returning her. \r\nThe Barron Country Shelter has also been very helpful to my Girl Scout Troop to earn badges and pins and help pass the words of the Rice Lake Off Leash Dog Park opening in 2010. Thank you so much! ;0)\r\n

    Pros

    The staff is very helpful

    Cons

    Can't think of one!

    by: jimka

My 90 year old father had just lost his spouse, and needed a companion. On a visit to the Barron County Humane Society he met Phoenix. He wasn't convinced Phoenix the dog was just right.. but appreciated all the staff help to show him various dogs and answer all his questions. The next day he visited the Eau Claire Humane Society... BIG DIFFERENCE. Because of the large population, individual attention to visitors was much less apparent there... and the choice of pets smaller... So, his mind was made up! Back to Barron County Humane Society where the kind staff helped him with all the details.. He's delighted with his new companion, Phoenix. The staff was gracious enough to take a picture of my father with his new pet and send it to me (posted)

    Pros

Very Helpful and knowledgeable ... met our every neeed

    Cons

    none apparent

    by: emilyjohnson

I really like the Barron Humane Society. I go with my sister sometimes to walk dogs and play with cats and I always have so much fun. It is always very clean and the people that work there are very friendly. The pets seem to get a lot of attention there which makes me happy. I also like it because the Barron Humane Society does a lot of fun events to help raise money for the animals. I can tell they really care for the animals.

    Pros

You can tell when you enter the building that this shelter is kept clean and tidy. The smell is fresh and the floors are scrubbed shiney! The animals coats are groomed and you can tell they get bathed and pampered... and that makes it nice to visit. More room is needed and this shelter deserves it!

  • 108. Great Shelter

    by: dodgegirl9

I have visited the shelter ever since it was located in Rice lake. Its location in Barron, now, is much larger than the old one. I love the fact that they love the kittens and puppies just as much as the adult. Even though there is not much room their hearts are always open and their minds are always searching for ways to make things better. I enjoy giving to this shelter because the people that run it are truely amazing!

    Pros

Help as much as they can, humble

    Cons

    small

  • 109. I love this place

    by: catlover85

I have been at the Barron County Humane Society ever sine I was in high school. I love to volunteer there. I take my kids there to learn to respect animals. I hope that they can get a makeover because the building is so small and doesn't have enough room for the animals

    Pros

    Caring people, great pets

    Cons

not enough room for all the pets

  • 110. Very caring!

My sister and I found a Shar Pei running around town, tried for like an hour to find an owner and could not. So we went to the shelter and let them know and right away they went to find the dog so they could figure something out. They seem to be very caring!

    Pros

    Caring!

    Cons

    None

    by: Cindoe

If you have spare time, spend some with the shelter animals. Even if you can't adopt, you can help a lot just by sharing your love. Remember love just grows when you give it away!

    Fun to visit

    Cons

    overcrowded

  • 112. Great people great shelter

    by: sanmol

This shelter is trying very hard to meet the needs of the area and the county. They have been very creative with recent fundraising events. They deserve more help than what they get from local cities.

    Pros

    its all about the animals

    Cons

i do not have any cons

  • 113. Kudos to the shelter

    by: MrsRLT

As my children were growing up, this shelter was a favorite place to go. We would play with the kittens, walk the dogs, foster animals, bring in animals that we found, and help with the fundraisers. We adopted pets from this shelter. the shelter was great at making sure that anyone adopting was the proper placement. We went through a small interview to make sure we were a good match.\nThe shelter had a great program for volunteers where my daughter loved to put in the hours.\nThe fundraisers were very creative and we tried to be involved with many including going to "Jail".\nNow my kids are grown and it seems I don't get there very much. It is a distance. but I try to support them as I can. I started bringing our Kinskid to visit. He loved it! The staff was great for letting us explore.\nThe shelter is also great for bringing in animals that we have been abandoned and we can't find homes for them. Sometimes I feel we have brought more animals in than adopted!!\n\nI am glad to be part of this shelter and only wish that all communities could have a place like this to help the animals.\n\nKeep up the good work!!

    Pros

great people, variety of animals, easy to volunteer

    Cons

    too far away

  • 114. Great place!

  • 115. HSBC has friendly, caring & professional staff and a great facility!

    by: aliciadoud

I have been stopping at the Humane Society of Barron County whenever I can to help walk dogs, and I have also been participating in as many fundraising events that I can.\n\nHSBC is a wonderful facility and everyone seems to care such a great deal about the well being of the animals that come through the door. The staff are all so kind, and the shelter is always very clean. I really enjoy stopping there to walk dogs, and I hope to do more as time goes on.\n\nI wish HSBC a great 2009 and thank them so much for going the extra mile for all the animals that need them!

    Pros

Friendly, caring & professional staff, clean facility

    Cons

Some of the little dogs are kept in kind of small cages. Could be for potty training though??

  • 116. Great changes

    by: beagleboys

I adopted Hunter, my second Beagle, a year ago this month from the Humane Society of Barron County. At that time the shelter was in a shambles, it was dirty and over run with cats and dogs and not managed well overall. There were cat cages all over the front entry area and it smelled poorly. About two months ago I returned to the shelter to check out the changes I heard about and was amazed. I can not say "WOW" enough. All the cat cages in the front removed, the smell gone, the animals maintained better, new management and changes to their mission statement. For being the only shelter in the county, a new animal control officer they are handling everything very well. Great job to everyone at the shelter for their efforts in these changes. The shelter is also doing a great job at outreaching to the community for assistance and fundraising events. I am proud to say I am now a volunteer at the Humane Society of Barron County.

    Pros

Great changes over the last year

    Cons

    needs more space

  • 117. Great place to find your forever friend

    by: spaul418

I adopted a dog from Barron Humane Society two years ago when she was a puppy. She is the sweetest most lovable dog I've ever had. The humane society is a great place to go to find a pet that will make your home so much more! The staff is great and knowledgeable. Even if you don't adopt a pet, I recommend anyone just to go and take one of the dogs for a walk, or stay and play with the kittens; it means the world to them!

    Pros

    Good people, GREAT pets

    Cons

I can't take them all home with me.

  • 118. Barron County Humane Society is the place to adopt!
