  • 3. Such a large impact from a small shelter

    by: rjdlnd

I doate regularly to this organization because I can follow the animals progress. Their website is always up to date and they are never too busy to answer email. When they request funds to help a sick animal it is always nice to follow it's progress. I adopted from this shelter even thought it's several hours from my house. \nBarbe met me almost halfway. Talk about going the extra mile! The dedication of these people is heartwarming and i can't imagine the heartbreak they have to deal with.

    Pros

They work tirelessly torescue and place animals

    Cons

In need of bigger facilities and funding

  • 4. small rural shelter that does great work

    by: Pax1971

I have two friends who volunteer at this shelter. They put in a lot of time there. I admit I am not a volunteer there myself for the good reason that I live 125 mile away. But I am familiar with the area. It’s rather rural and a small shelter like the Humane Society for Campbell County doesn’t get the publicity or the money that shelters get in the big cities. They do a lot of good work with what they have at this small shelter. If you live nearby and see this review, please check them out and give of your time and money.\n\nThey say the third time is the charm. Let’s find out as my review has been twice removed, and no one bothers to tell me why. Still I keep trying.

    Pros

    does much needed work

    Cons

    small and underfunded

  • 5. Amazing Contribution

    by: BmThompson

The society is a wonderful asset to Campbell County. Animals are being saved and adopted into loving homes that will cherish their new furry friends forever. The staff of this society are extremely knowledgeable and dedicated to the mission of no animal left behind. I am amazed at their passion and dedication.

    Pros

The staff running the shelter are solely dedicated to the successfull futures of their animals. No detail is overlooked.

    Cons

    None!

  • 6. Good at advertising for adoption

    by: ztT4MP89304117

Their effort along with WSET to promote adoption and spay and neuter is a wonderful thing. Too many animals are euthanized or left somewhere to starve. The efforts of these volunteers should be applauded and rewarded with this award so that they can continue their work.

    Pros

    Wonderful staff

    Cons

    Needs more space

  • 7. HSCC is Great!

    by: Kimbee

We adopted 2 cats from the Humane Society of Campbell County. Their website was well done and very informative. It was on the website we first saw the kitties that now provide us with love & endless entertainment. \nWe interacted with a few staff members over the next couple weeks.\nThey all were helpful, informative, and pleasant. It was evident they wanted what was best for the animals. \nThe downside to the cat shelter was the small size of the old building (a former ranch-style house). My first impression was that it wasn't clean, but that wasn't the case. It just smelled unclean because there were so many cats in such a small area. \nThe HSCC will be the first place I look for my next pet!

    Pros

    Great employees; Great website

    Cons

    Shelter too small

  • 8. HSCC does so much with so little.

    by: kewlmamma

I have found the HSCC to be dedicated to the welfare of these animals and their ability to do so much with so little is remarkable. The staff is very friendly and knowledgable and the pet area was very clean and didn't have a strong pet odor.

    Pros

They truely care about the animals and do all they can.

    Cons

    Not enough room or funds.

  • 9. What a wonderful shelter

    by: caravizza

I have found my forever pet with Humane Society for Campbell County. I would never have found her if it wasn't for HSCC. I was searching weekly online for a big baby to rescue. There she was. My new baby. I fell in love the moment I saw her picture and submitted my online application immediately. HSCC contacted me by email the very next day then called me as well. I have pictures and video of my new baby who will move to her new forever home on March 22, 2008. I have not met Neeka in person, although I feel so strongly she is already a member of my family thanks to the staff of HSCC. My experience with HSCC has been a positive and enlightening. I feel that each and every animal in their rescue facility has an advocate. Thank you to Cindy and all the staff at HSCC!!!!

    Pros

HSCC is on the web; the staff really works hard to place animals with forever homes; will keep you informed of your application; will keep you informed of the pet you that you have chosen. See review below for more Pros.

    Cons

    4 hours from my home

  • 10. Hardworking volunteers!

    by: BitBucketBob

My wife spends most of her free time working with this humane society. She brings home dogs who need some extra love and attention, and works getting animals into rescue, as well as in to appropriate homes. I cannot wait for the day that there will be a shortage of animals for her to spend her time on! (Maybe she will be able to cook and clean again. ) The volunteers do a super job amthcing up people to animals.

    Pros

Dogs and cats are wellcared for; matching up is important

    Cons

    Small facility

  • 11. Human Society a great organization

    by: rjcronk

I like the idea that they try to foster as many animals as possible. This allows the dog/cat to gain the skills necessary to live in a household. However it does make it harder to adopt the animal since the potential adopter cannot visit the animal easily

    Pros

    run by volunteers

    Cons

    none

  • 12. Three of our cats were adopted from here

    by: fivspeed

Good people who work above and beyond to help pets find good homes. All volunteer staff who have regular daytime jobs too. Odd location unfortunately, and its hard to see them from the road. Considering the size of the facility as well, I think they do a pretty good job in helping animals. If you have time, consider volunteering.

    Pros

Helping thousands of pets find homes

    Cons

    Needs more volunteers!

  • 13. My darling Rusty

    by: zoocat86

My 5 year old dog, Rusty was adopted from this shelter when he was only a puppy. They provide a wondeful shelter to animals that need their attention. I will continue to support them.

    Pros

Wonderful establishment, all you could ask for

    Cons

    none

  • 14. No longer lost

    by: annzip

We adopted a lost 18 mo old golden retriever. We started off fostering him and then adopted him. He was so unhappy w/o a home. The volunteers at the CCHS went out of their way to meet his needs and other animals that were brought in. They work very hard at matching pets and owners. I appreciate what they do!

    Pros

Very concerned for animals care and future

    Cons

    Small and depends on volunteers

  • 15. HSCC

    by: Jebarber

I love working at HSCC. Everything is very clean and sanitary when working with each cat and cleaning out their cages. Also, all the cats seem so friendly and are always meowing and asking for attention. It would be a great place to adopt your next cat if you are looking for a new addition to your home!

    Pros

    Clean!

    Cons

    More kitties need homes!

  • 16. HSCC Has A Pure Love of Animals

    by: mjbrookens

Working with The HSCC has been a great experience. They are knowledgable and have a genuine love of all animals. It's an honor to work beside them and help the HSCC get its name out there!!

    Pros

Great people with a pure love of animals

    Cons

    Not widely known

  • 17. Wonderful

    by: mwaller

The Campbell County humane society is great. They work in conjunction with the Central VA Spay Neuter clinic to provide lower cost services. This is wonderful. The more pets we spay and neuter now means less pets that we will have to euthanize later!

    Pros

    Caring

    Cons

    none

  • 18. small selter big heart

    by: crazyacre4me

A good shelter but could be better. Campbell county is a very large area with a very diverse animal population, yet the Campbell county shelter is small compaired to the area served. Also the staff is an unpaid staff that works at the shelter because of their love of animals. In a tight economy the budget is just as tight and donations of any kind, time, food, money, blankets ect. help. Needless to say with what they have to work with they all do an amazing job.... think what could be done with a make over.... keep up the good work i'm voting for you !!!

    Pros

very caring staff who do all they can

    Cons

not enough room for county size

  • 19. The Humane Society

    by: cdneal

This shelter does an amazing job of saving as many pets as they can. They really care about these animals that society has neglected. HSCC is performing a vitale role in our community that most people don't know anything about. I'm sure it is a pretty thankless job, except from the pets of course. :)

    Pros

    they save pets

    Cons

    they can't save them all

  • 20. Great People Who Love Animals

    by: CntryL8y

I have worked with this group of very caring people in the past, and their a great bunch of people who are all dedicated to what they do, Most of them work, and spend all the rest of their time with the animals. I say they have two jobs one for them selves and one for the animals. They are so Dedicated I know I said that already but they really are. If I wore to loose one of my pets I would hope that this shelter would be the one to find them. I have adopted two of my pets through them as well as fostered a time or two, among other things.\nI just think their GREAT!!

    Pros

The People In this Organization Really Care

    Cons

  • 21. I love the HSCC!

    by: LibraryWench

Several years ago I adopted one of my cats from the HSCC through PetSmart. She came to me with a respiratory infection, but no further problems; so, when I decided to adopt another cat, this was the first place my husband and I went. \n\nThe place was horrible! The animals were sick and their cages were filthy. We both left the building crying, and wound up adopting a kitten from the Lynchburg Humane Society. I had never been to a more disgusting place in all of my life.\n\nSo when I wanted to adopt a dog last summer and found one on Petfinder, I literally cringed when I saw she was at the HSCC. I talked my husband into giving it a try, and I immediately noticed there were changes when we pulled up to the building. When we went inside, I think my jaw dropped--this felt like a completely different place from the one I had entered years before! You could have eaten off of the floor, and the staff were some of the friendliest people I have ever worked with. They treated both the dog I adopted and my husband and I with the utmost of kindness. \n\nWhen we discovered that my little adopted pup had heartworms, my contact at the shelter was so helpful. I was upset and panicking, and she talked me through the worries. They understood needing to delay my pup's spay until after the heartworm treatment was finished, and kept in contact with me throughout the procedure. I cannot say enough about the help and support I received from the staff at the HSCC during this time.\n\nHSCC needs our help. They have accomplished so much to turn that place around--it's amazing what a few people with great intentions can do to turn a nightmare into a dream. Let's try to help them continue their hard work. Donate time, donate money, donate food, donate kitty litter, donate cleaning supplies--do whatever you can to help support this group of people who have already done so much with so little!

    Pros

    Friendliest staff

    Cons

    Need a new building!

  • 22. Thank you for all your hard work!

Thank you for taking such great care of the animals at your shelter. You are doing an awesome job! Good luck with the makeover!!!

    Pros

    great care for the animals

    Cons

    needs a good makeover

  • 23. Dedicated volunteers

    by: caenglish53

The HSCC volunteers make the organization what it is. They spend countless hours day and night caring for the animals in the community. Many open their homes to the animals that come through the shelter either by fostering or adopting them. Many of the volunteers donate supplies and use a lot of their own money to buys supplies and even to seek treatment for animals that need it. Funds are low and HSCC operates on donations only. This organization deserves a make over.

    Pros

    hard-working obsessed volunteers

    Cons

    need new shelter

  • 24. great shelter

    by: blond1819

I adopted both of my dogs from here and they are the best. One was only 8 weeks old at the time and the other was 1 1/2. Our adoptions were completed in a timely manner and by caring people. If I still lived in the area, I would adopt more from there!

    Pros

  • 26. Great organization helping needy animals in our area

    by: KingCatfisherman

This organization is a dedicated and hard-working group of people. They are small in number but their love and committment to the animals in our community is evident. These folks spend countless hours working to find animals homes. They are working with a limited amount of funding, space, and volunteer base. Help them out however you can!!!

    Pros

    hard-working volunteers

    Cons

lack of funding, space, and volunteers

  • 27. Blessed with Tara

    by: Chelwill

If it wasn't for the Campbell County Humane Society, we wouldn't have found Tara. When we moved into our first home with more space, my husband and I agreed that we could get a dog. We went to the HSCC. They referred us to one of their foster homes to look at Tara.....WOW! We fell in love with her instantly. We were told that she had been adopted out twice and brought back both times. We couldn't understand why? And now that we've had her for a few years....we REALLY don't understand why. She is an absolute blessing to our family. We get so many compliments on what a great dog she is. She's so well-trained and great with everyone. But on the flip-side...she's a wonderful guard dog. She won't let just anybody mess with her family.

    Pros

Wonderful, Dedicated Staff and Foster Homes

    Cons

Small building, not much outdoor room for pets

  • 28. Best Volunteers!

The volunteers and staff with this shelter are incredibly committed to making sure that the animals not only get placed in homes, but get placed in homes with loving families. They are dedicated to making sure that any pet with the potential to succeed in a home has all the opportunities possible to find the perfect owner. You cannot find a more passionate or committed group of people!

    Cons

  • 29. Humane Soceity for C.C. really cares

    by: laucarp

My brother asked me to care for his dog because he couldn't. And after time I realized my home was not safe either, living near a main highway and I was working long hours too therefore, I wasn't able to care for a dog and with 5 cats in the house he was not happy. I contacted the Humane Society for Campbell County and they showed me how much they really care for animals by their help in finding a good home for our dog,They even placed my dog in holding until they found a good home for him. They also kept me informed to let me know how well my dog adapted to his new owners. Humane Society for Campbell County really cares.

    by: PaintRider

It's all been said. I've volunteered here, adopted here and know many others who have done the same. We are fortunate to have this facility and (more importantly) the people that make it work, nearby.

    Pros

How they do so much with so little is a mystery

    Cons

    Limited resources

  • 32. HSCC,

    by: djhopp

The Humane Society for Campbell County is the most caring team of people I have ever seen. They give their time and love to the animals that are in need of homes and medical treatment. And most of all these are all volunteers. They have to be praised for all the hard work that they do to protect these animals. They have a strong love and loyalty to these animals and I am so glad to know them and participate in any activity or organization needed to help. They are wonderful. I also think it is wonderful that they have a pet of the week. This gives all of them a chance at a good home.

    Pros

The team at HSCC are the most caring and compassionate people and the animals are so well care for.

    Cons

    none

  • 33. Here is my comment

They drove hours out of the way to get me my border collie/lab mix from another kill shelter... These people really care about pets and are doing a great job with these animals. We are so happy with our dog 'Buddy' aka 'Cosmic' the wonder dog - I can't believe we've had him less than a year. Keep up the great work!

  • 34. Awesome Group!

    by: spugh42

I have volunteered with HSCC for two years now and applaud all the volunteers for their tremendous dedication and hard work. Everyone truly has the animal's best welfare in mind and go above and beyond to place them in the best home. I've never seen anyone work as hard as Barbe S. to help the dogs avoid euthanasia. HSCC collaborates very well with other Humane Societies and organizations to meet the needs of the animals. What a great group to volunteer with!!

    Pros

    Dedicated and caring volunteers

    Cons

    Limited space and funding

  • 37. Volunteers Working Together

    by: smapplebee

Humane Society for Campbell County has a multi-level plan to lower the cat and dog population in this rural area. Numerous Foster Moms care for mommies with babies until they can be spay/neutered and medically ready for adoption. Dogs live with families to help the socialization process. A facility for cats gives a home to cats waiting for adoption. Partnering with PetSmart, numerous cats are adopted. A transport system helps dogs find homes in other areas. An extensive website has plenty of information about cats, dogs, volunteering, donating, and the history. All Programs are set up in the best interest of the cats and dogs and an occasional small pet. A local grocery allows customers to buy food etc. for donations. Volunteers are the heart and sole of Campbell County Humane Society. Each adoption is a victory.

    Pros

    Hundreds of Adoptions

    Cons

Hundreds More Cats & Dogs Need Homes

  • 38. Great place to volunteer

    by: JaimeGirl

I love volunteering with this shelter. I help with the adoption center in Petsmart and I love seeing the cats getting adopted and finding new homes. Everyone works so hard to help the animals while they are in our care and to help them get adopted out to wonderful forever homes.

    Pros

    Dedicated staff

    Cons

    none

  • 39. Small group does big work

    by: srj

This is a small organization that accomplishes a lot for its size. Since re-forming back in the 90's, many animals have been rescued from the pound, spayed or neutered, and either adopted, transferred to breed rescue groups, or transported to no-kill shelters up North for adoption there. Cats are also brought to PetSmart's adoption center for adoption there. Volunteers work with the public at schools & events to promote awareness of the importance of spay/neuter and other proper petcare.

    Pros

    Volunteer organization with dedicated volunteers

    Cons

Supported on shoestring by donations only

    by: pfisters5

I have fostered many dogs and puppies for this shelter. They really try to match up the right pet with the right family. They utilize many foster homes, in addition to the shelter, so that the pets can be evaluated and loved and cared for to help prepare them for their forever homes!

    Pros

    Caring Staff

    Cons

    Need larger space

  • 42. Amazing Humane Society

    by: ThePawWash

This Humane Society does wonderful things in the animal community and they save many lives. Anytime a customer asks about getting a new dog, I think of a shelter dog first and would recommend CCHS without batting an eye.\n\nI personally adopted a kitten from them awhile back, and their interest in making sure she found a good home was wonderful. I am so happy this organization is here to help so many loving animals find equally loving families.

    Pros

    Great volunteer organization

    Cons

    needs better facilities

  • 43. HSCC

    by: ACOJNC

As an Animal Control Officer that works very closely with the HSCC I can't think of a more committed group of volunteers. Many open their homes to dogs, cats, and virtually any other type of animal that needs a place to go before they can find their forever home. As far as I am concerned, a win for them is a win for us as well and vice versa. Considering that their volunteers share our facility on essentially a daily basis, we get to know one another quite well. I think that it is wonderful that they put so much effort into finding the right homes for their animals.

    Pros

Committed Volunteers that work with surrounding Shelters and Pounds

    Cons

    Needs Facility Help

  • 44. Great Humane Society

    by: moonp1e

Seven years ago we adopted both of ours dogs from the HSCC. Our adoption counselor was very helpful and worked with us to get the best match for our family. A few years later I began volunteering with them. It has been a great experience. Other volunteers know a lot about animals and are a great resource for our community. The amount of time that they dedicate is amazing and so many animals are saved because of it. They have been an inspiration for me to tell more people about our humane society and to spread the word about spaying and neutering so there will be fewer animals thru our shelter that have to be euthanized. The HSCC offers a lot of opportunity for the animals to meet people at adoption events and works with most of the animals for socialization training. The adoption counselors care about the animals and are concerned with finding a loving home for the animals. They work hard at helping and are greatly appreciated!!

    Pros

Dedicated to helping the animals, volunteers are knowledgeable

    Cons

    None

  • 45. The HSCC

    by: Smilingk9

HSCC is a unique organization in that it is solely run by an impassioned group of individuals. These volunteers work and work to save as many animal lives as they can from local animal control facilities. Many of these volunteers devote endless hours to the animals in their care. The HSCC is determined to do the best with what they have while at the same time striving for the ultimate goal of improving our facilities and care for the animals.

    Pros

    committed group of volunteers

    Cons

    need updated facility
