  • 1. Outstanding shelter with a Big Heart

    by: chance6174

This is a perfect shelter that is well overdue to expand to keep up with the amount of animals in the area. This was built many years ago and was perfect for the low amount of animals at that time. Now with more houses and people have 8 kennels is not enough for such a big area. Cat room needs a lot of work it wasn't designed for cats when it opened years ago. Now houses several cats with no room. Please help this shelter it is in so much need of more room.

    Pros

    Awesome Staff

    Cons

To Small to Keep up with the Community

  • 2. Small Shelter With a BIG Heart...

    by: RedCatShelterStaff

Everyone at the Horseheads Dog Control Animal Shelter is very caring. They give the animals a chance (depite breed), and go to great lengths to try and improve not only there physical well-being, but mental well being as well. they go above and beyond, working very late hours (on call 24 hours a day 365 days a year) and reaching out to as many as they can help. the problem then comes in THEY DONT HAVE ENOUGH ROOM! They have a capacity for 8 dogs, maximum 16, which is not nearly enough room for the growing demand which the community places. They genuinly care about each and every animal in there care, and work with potential adoptors until a perfect match is made. They dont just adopt out to unload there animals, they try to match each person with what will potentially be there perfect pet. Check them out on PetFinder.com at zipcode 14845... they update at least once a week. I would LOVE to see the shelter expand and be updated to more modern kennels and cat rooms. PLEASE HELP OUT! Thank YOU!

    Pros

staff knowledge and care, euthanasia policy, STAFF

    Cons

CAPACITY IS TOO SMALL, out of date animal living space, small working space, community dosent know much about them

iWE ADOPTED ADOPTED THRU THIS SHELTER, BUDDY CAME INTO MY YARD 13 YEARS AGO, I THOUGHT FOR SURE SOMEONE WOULD BE LOOKING FOR HIM, BUT AFTER 2 WEEKS;THEY CALLED ME AND SAID NO ONE HAD CLAIMED HIM AND DID I WANT TO ADOPT HIM? . i DID AND HE WAS THE BEST AND MOST GENTLE LOVING DOG I HAD. HE WAS A HUSKIE/SHEPHERD MIX, AND tHE SHELTER STARTED ME OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT, WITH GIVING BUDDY HIS SHOTS, AND A CERTIFICATE TO HAVE HIM NEUTERED. WHAT ALL RESPONSIBLE OWNERS OF PETS SHOULD DO. THANK YOU!HORSEHEADS ANIMAL SHELTER, FOR THE GREAT JOB YOU ALL DO THERE! THANKS FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE BUDDY IN OUR FAMILY.

  • 5. The most caring folks to work with

    by: LiLynn

This team has reached out to lower income families and participated in free clinics to spay, neuter and vaccinate their pets. They have done everything possible to try to follow up on these families. They take in animals that are not adoptable and spend tons of personal time with them getting these poor abused victim throwaway pets to start trusting humans again. \nI have seen the animals before and after and have been brought to tears on the commitment that they make to bring these animals around again. And before they make a decision that the animal has been too abused to ever trust again and must be euthanized. \nThis shelter also takes the time to take a stand in any animal abuse cases and gets the community informed and involved. They also have several community shelter event days where the public is invited to come an learn more about what they are trying to do for the community to raise awareness about free rabies clinics and spay/neuter options for the public.\nKudos to the Horseheads Animal Shelter!\n\n

    Pros

The folks that run this shelter put their hearts and souls into saving every animal possible and making sure they are placed in the best possible enviroment for their particular needs

    Cons

They need more finances and a larger facilty to properly care for the numbers of abandoned animals

The horseheads animal shelter is a wonderful shelter. I wish they were bigger so that they could house more animals, but they do the best they can. They are soo nice there and really do care a lot about the animals and their welfare.

  • 9. All shelter animals should have it this good!!

    by: Kidsri4

The Horseheads Animal Shelter loves their canine and feline guests!! The adoption rate is very high due to the excellent reputation of the shelter and it's staff. The harder animals to adopt are not given a deadline or a cut-off date, in fact some have remained at the shelter for many months until the perfect family has come along.\r\n\r\nThe dogs take long walks and get so much attention all day. They also visit a nursing home, march in parades, and visit schools to educate children.\r\n\r\nThe animals receive so many treats, I'm sure they're spoiled by the time they go to their forever homes.

    Pros

Cleanliness, care, and love for the animals is #1 priority!

    Cons

The building itself is too small to provide services to all the animals that need it.

  • 10. The Animal Shelter with a BIG Heart

    by: LindzKid

The Horseheads Animal Shelter is known as the small shelter with a big heart, which is the truth. Everyone there really cares about the animals and tries to find the animals great homes. They also do a great job at keeping everything clean. The shelter always posts on petfinder.com all of our animals that are up for adoption and includes pictures along with a description of each animal. The only major thing the Horseheads Animal Shelter needs is help in expanding the building.

    Pros

Take wonderful care of the animals, everyone is friendly

    Cons

    The shelter is too small

    by: messazza

Known as "The little shelter with a big heart", the motto is perfect. The workers and volunteers all have the largest hearts in the area. The shelter houses the areas cream of the crop, and they know it, all the dogs are stars here. Just because the space is small, doesn't mean the goal isn't large. These animals are well cared for, loved a lot and groomed to be ready for their forever home.

    Pros

Mostly no kill, friendly staff, love abounding

    Cons

too small help it get bigger
