  • 3. This shelter is worth winning this makeover.

    by: Daff1963

This shelter has been around for over 30 yrs. It has had it's run of bad times. It's not the same shelter it was a year ago, they have made some employee changes and board member changes.\nIt is a small, hidden shelter that is run down. They are constantly fighting to keep the shelter doors open, which is hard when donations drop. Although they do the best they can with what they have, they could do so much more with an updated shelter.\nThis shelter houses some dogs that are far from easy to place. So this will be there home until a kind soul adopts them. It's a shame that they have lived/will live there for years. Please help make their home a nicer place.

    Pros

Helps many dogs that other shelters pass on.

    Cons

Doesn't have enough room to house more animals.

  • 4. GC APA

    by: GCAPA5000

The Granite City APA tries their hardest to do their best and to give the best to the animals. They are our number one priority. They rescue and place hundreds and will keep doing it as long as they have great supporters and a shelter to put them in.

    Pros

    great adoption process

    Cons

    which one to choose

  • 5. APA of Granite City, IL

    by: kayreebee2

These are really good people and have worked fpr years to save animals. I've heard nothing but good things about this no-kill shelter. They definitely deserve all the support we can give them.

    Pros

    really care about animals

    Cons

building is not good, but they try so hard

    by: Jenni0221

I have volunteered many times at this shelter, and loved every minute of it, the animals are awesome as well as the staff who are there. This is a great place to go f your looking for a new pet.

    Pros

    Great staff

    Cons

    Low income

  • 7. Great caretakers

    by: bkj

We adopted a 12 week old puppy from GCAPA this year. The staff found her on the streets and saved her from Parvo. At 12 weeks old, she was crate-trained and could sit on command. CRATE-TRAINED...need I say more?? She needed little training to be house-trained, since she wouldn't go potty in her crate. You could tell she was loved and well taken care of at the shelter. The staff are very committed to the animals, and really want to find the best homes for them. It's a shame they're in a city full of uncaring citizens, as I've heard through the grapevine that almost no donations actually come from Granite City. They need help in updating their facilities to keep on giving the great care to the animals they save.

    Pros

    Caring, Knowledgeable staff

    Cons

    needs badly updated

  • 8. No-Kill is GREAT!

    by: Whiskers12

The people at the shelter are great and they know a lot about the animials' personalities! The staff is very welcoming and even though they dont have a lot of people out there, they love to show you their animals! There are a lot of animals out there because people cannot take care of them anymore. Since they are a no-kill shelter, none of them will be put down! They will have a forever home at the Granite City APA. They need to win the sweepstakes because the building they are working in is really old. The animals get sick (for instance: 4 puppies have parvo now!) and with vet bills, utility bills, medicine, employee pay, and everything else, the money goes by quick. Recently, the shelter was threatening to close be cause of not enough funding to keep it open. Now, the shelter is in a little bit more better condition, but could sway to almost closing or even closing! Please help these poor animals and the shelter by giving them the money to help fix the shelter! Go out and adopt, volunteer your time, donate, or just go out there and walk a dog or pet a cat! Please, they need our and your help!

    Pros

    Great people and great animals!

    Cons

The building is old, they need this money to fix it up!

  • 9. no kill shelter

    by: johnsoji

I just wanted to comment on the shelter. I think it is very important to have a no kill shelter in our area, and I just wish I had the money to make donations to the shelter.

    Pros

    staff cares

    Cons

    not enough resources

  • 10. Awesome! Adopt from them!

    by: ModRocky

A truly wonderful place to adopt an animal from! Granite City is tucked away down a gravel road in Illinois . If you're from St. Louis and looking to adopt, it is worth the drive! Only a 20-25 minute drive from U City.\n\nI've been volunteering at adoption events and have gotten to know many of the dogs and several of the folks from there. They're a pleasure to work with and care so deeply about the animals.\n\nDefinitely worth a spin on their website (www.gcapa.org)...check them out!

    Pros

They work so very hard to rescue on a shoe-string budget

    Cons

None-All their animals are loved by the small staff & vols

  • 12. AWESOME SHELTER!

    by: kyotee

This shelter really needs this makeover...they are in danger of closing because of lack of volunteers, space and money. The staff and volunteers really do care about all the animals and try to make the best of the situation they have been handed. After in the care of the staff, these animals who have came in mistreated and underweight and with diseases really make a turn around and become healthy and ready for a home!

    Pros

    Caring Staff

    Cons

    They need this make-over!!

  • 13. No Kill Animal Shelter

    by: sparkles42102

They are a non profit "no-kill" animal shelter, located in the woods in a secluded part of Granite City, Illinois just across the river from St. Louis, Missouri. No animal you ever see at the shelter will be "put to sleep" to make room for another. They are one of the very few in the Metro St. Louis area. They work very, very hard to get their critters adopted so that we can save another animal.

    Pros

Non kill shelter who really cares for their animals

    Cons

    They need this make-over!!

    by: ztT4MP46769967

I wouldn't recomend adopting any cat or dog from there. Had issues with a sick dog that I returned the next morning after adopting it and had trouble getting anyone to return my phone calls about the dog. Not a very reliable agency if you ask me and I'll leave it at that.

    Pros

at least they don't kill the animals there

    Cons

not very reliable after pets are adopted or returned for one reason or another
