  • 2. Great shelter in Genesee County

    by: koolchick

This facility was relocated a few years back from a run down area to a brand new location just outside of town. Not only is the facility new they take great pains to keep it clean and fresh smelling. The new space allows for out door runs and the noise is not a big issue. While yes it is a dog shelter, they do have many cats and try to find homes for all the animals they come across. We adopted two beautiful cats and were at the shelter many times. \r\n\r\nWe also have called animal control due to some neglected animals (dogs) and the staff is professional, knowledgeable and very caring at all times.

    Pros

This is a rather new facility and does a great job for the animals

    Cons

    none that we noticed

    by: beckyd113

The genesee county animal shelter is a great cause and does good work but they are very rude and not very personable. I have went in there and had good experiences and I have had some horrible experience. They seems to want to get their animals into good homes but don't care about the people and their needs when they are looking for a certain animal. You wait forever to even be able to see an animal and if you want to adopt it takes even longer. They also have very horrible hours. They are mainly open during the day and for 2 hours at a time, so it is hard for anyone that has a day job or wants their children to come with them to get there.

    Pros

    good cause

    Cons

    unfriendly workers

  • 4. county owned

  • 5. County owned and operated

    by: gobsmacked

This is legally a dog pound. They do take in some cats, but is owned and operated by Genesee County and paid for with tax dollars. This is nearly a brand new $850,000 building paid for by the county. They have a group called "Volunteers for Animals" who work very hard finding homes for the animals and helping with spay/neuter and meds that the county won't pay for. They turn away many cats that end up at the Wyoming Co. SPCA and they DO NOT rescue or trap and rehabilitate ferals. Because of the volunteers, the county allows them to have some cats. They also euthanize. Many Many dogs have been saved because of the volunteers. But the cat problem in Genesee Co. is overwhelming. I don't blame the volunteers, it's Genesee Co. and the powers that be!!!!

    Pros

    great for dogs

    Cons

    doesn't take many cats
