    by: mikybul21

My girlfrined myself and her son went last week to get a dog. We found a dog we fell in love with named Theodore . The shelter's worker named lance brought the dog out in the yard and we wanted to take the dog home right away. They told us they had to do a check on refrences . That one of the volenteers would bring to dog to our house if everything checked out. We figured there would be no problem so we stopped looking for a dog and went out and spent over a hundred dollars for food and toys for Theo. We got a phone call a few days later saying that we were second on line and that someone beat us to the dog even though when we saw Theo no one told us this. A few minutes later my girlfriend got another phone call saying that the other people released thier option and we could have the dog. For a few days we heard nothing so i made calls and finally i was able to get someone named cathy on the phone , she almost immeadiatly put lance on the phone and lance started lieing saying he told us the whole time we were second. I asked to speak to Cathy who told us no one spoke to my girlfriend and said we were going to get Theo. I dont know what kind of shelter they are running in Freeport but i guess im under the wrong mind set thinking giving these dogs a loving home is the main priority in a shelter. I wont persue this any further and totally disgusted on the way my girlfriend and I was treated and lied too. I am writing this for any person who thought of going to the Freeeport animal shelter and let them know not to be surprised at the way they will be treated...sincerly Mike

    Pros

    Cons

  • 2. Who is this shelter for and what are they doing?

    by: Bettybatly

a staff member turned away two new born kittens stating that there wasn't any room. when ask about other shelters that might take them the staff member said that all others are full, a complete lie, told by what seems to be a lazy staff member! 1)There is no data base available to tell you how full other shelters are and 2) there are plenty of shelters that will take in kittens in the middle of the winter! In long island Hempstead animal shelter, in Wantagh and in the north shore as well. North shore Animal league as well would. They receive an animal and adopt it out without any investigation on the animal or the new owners. All they care about is the money they receive, not the well being of the animal.

    Pros

roof over stray animals in the winter

    Cons

    It's a business, non-profit tax write off

  • 3. Ollie the Ferret

    by: joma815

These people have stolen my friends ferret - Ollie. Ollie went missing under the care of a pet sitter while the owners were on vacation. When the owners got back they finally tracked Ollie down. The people from Freeport Animal Shelter said one of their employees took Ollie home. Grateful and happy that he was safe my friends offered a reward and asked to pick him up right away. FAS said they would call their employee and have her bring Ollie back to the shelter to be picked up the next day. When my friend went to pick him up, FAS said that their "EMPLOYEE" decided to adopt him and that they could not have him back! They said he was allowed to be adopted after 5 days - my friends - the owners - called to have him picked up on the 4th day! This place will be sued and shutdown if Ollie does not get returned to his rightful owners! Please join me and many others in flooding FAS with emails and phone calls.

  • 5. Shelter in LI, NY - HELP!!

    by: cgregorat

Freeport Shelter in LI is in desperate need of $$. Please help them and the animals they love so much. They have a wish list as well where items (i.e. blankets, food, toys, etc) can be donated as well.\r\n\r\nMost heartbreaking - please help find Brody & Blue, 2 pitbulls stolen from the shelter 10/08. I am so afraid for them, after being cared for w/so much love, to be in the hands of monsters now, is so painful to even imagine.

    Pros

    Not enough $$

    by: ztT4MP29028391

I adopted 2 cats from this shelter 2 different times, the 1st time it was a black cat we only had the cat for 3months, we woke up 1 morning and the cat was dieing in my arms the cat has corna virus... the 2nd time we adopted a grey with white paws, we had this cat for almost a year and yesterday 8/11/2008 the cat had to get put down b/c it has the corna virus again. This was 2 different cats with the rare virus which only happend in a dirty place. These people are crazy they give people problems to adopt if there cat ran away.. But they have no problem giving away sick kitten. Wich they never take care of this is a horriable place and you should never ever go there \r\n\r\n\r\nDon't do it instead of spending 65$ you will be spending 300 just to keep your cat alive!!!!!!

  • 10. Freeport's Best

    by: audreycomer

I was first turned on to the Freeport Animal Shelter by my niece who is an animal lover. She would be there all the time with blankets and newspapers and food. And also went home a few times with a furry friend. \r\n\r\nHer family moved to Maryland and now I feel like I should help in anyway I can. I will be bringing the blankets that she used to. It meant so much to her and she made many friends there so I know this is a worthy cause.

    Pros

The place though clean & neat really could use a makeover

    by: VaxGirl

This little shelter does a great deal with what they have. It's not a fancy place and they need every donation they get. The pets are are well cared for in comfortable runs. It's lovely to see the kitties curled up in a chair in the sun and not in cages. \r\n\r\nI only wish more people knew about this shelter both to donate and adopt pets from!

    Pros

Kind, friendly people who love animals.

    Cons

Not huge and famous like some shelters.

  • 34. Wonderful Place to go to ADopt

    by: grams6

My sister is involved with this shelter and all she talks of is how much they care about the animals.\r\n\r\nSHe has always been passionate about the care of animals and this shelter has given her a reason to continue fighting for the rights of all strays, \r\n\r\nAlthough she will admit that her first love are the dogs. SHe gives as much time or more to help the cats.\r\n\r\nIt is interesting to hear her talk about how this shelter is going to continue to improve and she is hoping that one day it will be one of the best on L I.\r\n\r\n

This shelter has been trying to upgrade the condition of the shelter for several years now. They have made some minor alterations but with the shortage of monies it still needs a great deal of work.\r\n\r\nI am hoping that thru this web site someone will see what a worthy cause this shelter is and help them in any way they can.\r\n\r\nWe can use any kind of donations, food, supplies medicines, and of course monetary.\r\n\r\nThank all of you for caring as much as we do for the abandoned and stray animals.\r\n\r\n

    by: frzamm

Tis shelter has come a very long way. It used to be a kill shelter and since it came under new leadership last year, it has become no-kill. The volunteers care about the animals and do the very best they can with what little resources they have. Please think about volunteering for this shelter. The animals will thank you!

    Pros

Cats have large runs, dogs have yard time

    Cons

    not enough volunteers

  • 42. A totally worthy No Kill Shelter

    by: Emilila

This is one of the if not the oldest shelter on Long Island. It has gone through nothing short of a metamorphisis over the past 2 years and in that time, so many animal lives have been changed for the better. The focus is totally on the animals. The dogs have better outdoor facilities now and they have created cat enclosures instead of cages. The physical plant of the building is very old and needs extensive renovating, but honestly, considering how far they have come, this place is amazing. They try to balance renovations with care of animals, always putting the animals first. \n\nCome see it. Join us. We love our shelter.

    Pros

    Compassionate, Knowledgeable and Kind

    Cons

Totally underfunded/ Facility really needs upgrading

  • 43. Compassionate Animal Lovers

    by: JKMJ0723

I had met staff members & friends from the Freeport Shelter and I was beyond impressed with all that they do for the shelter. The head coordinator ran a craft fair to raise money and I was a participant. The staff and friends make you feel better (especially when you are sad about the homeless animals) knowing that with good people like them, the animals are very well taken care of while in transition to find homes. The coordinator and staff give and put so much time and effort into running a successful animal shelter. Go Freeport Animal Shelter!

    Pros

    Great Staff!

    Cons

can't take home a pet right now!

  • 46. What a shelter!

    by: knickerbocker

This place is a most humane and compassionate place. The staff is warm and friendly and knowledgeable, with a desire to find great homes for their animals. \n\nThe physical plant has improved enormously over the past couple of years, but continues to need so much more. They function on donations and really try to make the most of what they get, designating some to improvements and the rest to the animals. \n\nIt is definitely worth a look if you want a pet. There are dozens upon dozens of cats and dogs for adoption.\n\nGreat place!

    Pros

    The shelter with a heart

    Cons

    Very old and needs repairs

  • 47. Could not be a better place

    by: Maradeez

A wonderful caring, loving shelter that houses over 100 animals.\r\n\r\nI visited this shelter and was greatly impressed with their operation.\r\nAdoptions are screened, vets reference are checked\r\nThey follow up after adoptions.\r\nThe place is kept clean and sanitary.\r\n\r\nI highly recommend this shelter to anyone who is interested in adopting a family pet.\r\n\r\nThey have just recently extended their hours and are constanly improving the operations.\r\nYou should come down and visit them,

    Pros

animals are all in large runs dogs and cats

    Cons

    could use some remodeling

  • 48. My aunt is a voluntter and loves it

    by: gwenplevy

I went in to visit the other day and I discovered what it is that my Aunt loves so much about this shelter.\r\n\r\nI recently had to put my dog to sleep after 16 years and I am mentally and physically destroyed. \r\nAll the people at the shelter were so kind to me and tried to make me feel better.\r\n\r\nWHen I am ready to adopt I will go there .

    Cons

  • 50. Nothing but love

    by: Freeport

If you want to adopt from a shelter that gives you an animal with the best ingredient, And that my friend is LOVE.\r\nTheir cats are not in pop ups but have small little rooms with furniture and cat trees and beds. It is just like they are at home. You can tell from their disposition how lovable the cats and kitttens are.\r\nThe dogs are kept in runs and have access to the outside runs when ever the doors are left open. The dogs are walked by caring volunteers at least once a day. They have recently expanded some of the outside runs and in the summer they are given small pools so they can take a swim and cool off.\r\n\r\nThis is a shelter that is taking care of their animal just like they were at home. NOTHING COULD BE BETTER.\r\nThe onky thing that this shelter needs is funding so they can continue their good and caring work.\r\n\r\nSlowly they are doing small improvements but a make over would be a god send to all the animals that go thru their doors. \r\n\r\nI know all rescue and shelters need funding and should get help but I truly do not think that any one deserves it as much as they do. I am keeping my fingers crossed.\r\n\r\n

    Pros

cats not in small cages but in large runs.

    Cons

    needs work on the building

  • 51. Such a nice shelter!

    by: Jellybean914

The Freeport Shelters best asset is the staff and volunteers. Everyone truly cares about the animals, their well-being, and their happiness. It is a joyous event when one of the dogs or cats gets a new home. Especially one that has been there a while. The only thing the Freeport shelter needs is money. Luckily there are generous people who volunteer to do work and fix up the place....but it could really use some more updating. But in the meantime...they do the best they can with what they have...and every animal there is appreciative.

    Pros

    Wonderful Shelter!

    Cons

    They need funding

  • 52. Karolyn's review

    by: karolyn71

I have adopted two kittens from the animal shelter and they brighten my day with joy and happiness and i recommend the Freeport Animal Shelter to anyone of my friends, family,Etc. I happen to know for a fact that they would be overjoyed if they win the makeover at the shelter. Stephanie at the animal shelter also adopted out to my sister-inlaw and brother and they also are very happy with there kitten too.

    Pros

I believe that they are a great place to adopt from.

    Cons

I think they could really use the money to build more for there facility.

  • 53. A Dream Come True

    by: lambrhondal

This is a shelter that has done good as it made progress from just cages. Our shelter has cold concrete floors and only has two standing walls as the other two are open wired with no protection from wind of winter or heat of summer. I hope we will one day have a shelter that can boast of the progress that this one has made.

    Pros

Not just a shelter but a healthy one

    Cons

    NA

  • 54. A Great Little Shelter

    by: fpaladino55

A nice place to come to look for a pet. Everyone is very helpful and they really seems to care. My hope is that more people will hear what a great shelter Freeport is and consider them when looking to adopt a pet.

    Pros

Everyone works so hard to find pets homes

    Cons

    None

  • 55. The best in SO many ways!

    by: brandy4

This is a most wonderful place. Freeport Shelter went from kill to no-kill in 2006 and has struggled successfully to maintain its no-kill status, upgrading the physical plant and renovating little by little. \n\nAlthough they still need money very badly, they work tirelessly to make sure the animals are well cared for and that the shelter is an inviting place for both the general public and the volunteers. \n\nStaff is lovely and they care deeply about what happens to the animals. A highly worthwhile 501c to contribute to( I sure have), and a shelter worth supporting. The animals are lucky indeed. \n\nCheck us out. We LOVE our shelter!

    Pros

Very humane, kind staff...great new cat enclosures, accomodating staff and volunteers.

    Cons

Still needs more renovations, but moving along nicely.

  • 56. We need your help

    by: ztT4MP66453350_DEAD_

I have been involved with the Freeport shelter for almost one full year. In that time the positive changes that have been made are nothing short of a miracle.\r\nSince we have become a no kill shelter and run only on donations it is truly difficult to continue., but continue we must. \r\n\r\nAny help that can be given to us is appreciated not \r\nonly by the Board and volunteers but mostly by the animals that reside at our shelter.\r\n\r\nKeep an eye on us, we are going to try and become one of the best places for animals to live until we find homes for them

    Pros

run by persons who formerly did animal rescue

    Cons

short staff because of funds. Run on donations

  • 57. Well on their way to being a great shelter

    by: ilovemybacon

Freeport Shelter has made leaps and bounds in the last year. The cats are living in enclosures rather than cages, the dogs have new runs and are getting daily exercise. But most of all...people are starting to consider the Freeport Shelter when they want to adopt a pet. Living on Long Island all my life...up until a year ago...I didnt even know there was a shelter in Freeport. As the facility improves, more and more people are taking notice. By this time next year...Freeport will be THE place to adopt a pet on the South Shore.

    Pros

A no kill shelter that has come a long way

    Cons

Sometimes short staffed and in need of renovations

  • 58. Heading in the Right Direction!

    by: trojo1521

The Freeport Animal Shelter is busting at the seems with cats and usually has a great number of dogs that need forever homes. They are heading in the right direction with renovations, but they need more help from the community. More volunteers would be a great asset to help with the 100+ cats and to walk the dogs. Every little bit would help this shelter.

    Pros

warm, caring, helpful staff. making improvements everyday

    Cons

    need to be open longer

  • 59. Great place for all furry creatures
