  • 1. Caring Staff

    by: Jubilee478

The staff at the Dubuque Regional Humane Society are some of the most knowledgeable and caring people I have met. They have taken steps to improve awareness in the community and have done great things for animal care in the tri-state area. After getting to know the staff members and hearing about their struggles with the size of their facilities, I absolutely feel that an improvement of the facility is needed. The intake rate is extreme in the growing city of Dubuque, IA. Not only do they care for the animals of the city of Dubuque, but for animals within a large radius in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. Please help our shelter!

    Pros

    Staff is amazing

    Cons

Facility needs expansion to keep up with demand

    by: kunde13

The Dubuque Humane Society does a great job of getting in the public and schools to inform people of the pets they have. All the staff are very nice personable and really have a love for what they do. If anyone deserves this it would be them!

    Pros

Really get a lot of volunteers to help keep the place looking and running well.

    Cons

The facility is not big enough so the makeover would definatly help!

DHS is a great place to find a new friend. The staff is very helpful and caring. Even a year after adopting Sophie I had a question about barking/behavior and they did everything they could to help me out. The facility is nice and clean. Please consider adopting a pet from a shelter. I adopted my dog Sophie from DHS and she is the best thing that has ever happened to me!

We have a dog from this shelter and couldn't be happier with her. Sheila was a Head Start dog and came to us after being in the shelter for several months. She has been a wonderful addition to our family. Sadly, she is growing older and when her time comes we will definitely come to the Dub. Humane Society for another dog. She won't be replaced, but will be missed.

  • 11. THE MERITS OF OUR DUBUQUE SHELTER

    by: DustCollector

My first pet came from this shelter. He was 3 months old when we got him. He had been a stray and had been there awhile. My daughter picked him partly because he was going to be euthanized in a few short minutes because he had been there for some time and hadn't been adopted yet. She said, at the time, she wished that she could have taken them all. We had this kitty for 21 years. He was an old man in kitty years when he died. He was like one of our children. Although he has been gone for 2 years, I still miss him everyday. A pet is a wonderful companion and stress reliever. He brought us much pleasure. Our shelter is run by loving, caring people who try to get every pet into a loving home. Being a recipient of ZOO TOO makeover money would only make a great shelter that much better.

    Pros

    Friendly, Knowledgeable

    Cons

Every shelter can always be improved with a little monetary help.

Everyone is so friendly and helpful. You cant beat their knowlege of animals and their compassion for all the animals they care for. I would highly recommend them if you are looking for a pet. They will match you up.

  • 17. THE BEST!!!!!

    by: hjr22899

I am a person who loves animals, obviously. The shelter here is WONDERFUL! EVERY time I have visited or been there to adopt, the staff were great! It was very obvious that there was a deep care and concern from the staff. I did not get the feeling from one person that they were just there because it was just a job. The care of the animals was great as well. All the animals were well kept and very loving. It is hard to visit and not feel sad though that the staff do not have everything they need to help the animals. I want to say so much more, but the one true thing I need to say is that the Dubuque Shelter is a great place that works very hard every day to give the animals the best care possible. It is very difficult to provide the best when the shelter is struggling to stay a float. Great work and wonderful care!!!!!

    Pros

The staff! The care! The help!

    Cons

    Needs more space and supplies!

  • 23. We love DHS

    by: Medievalfeast

Our two cats, Gwennie and Tansy, both came from DHS. And they're both amazing. We're lucky to have them and we were lucky DHS took such good care of them before we adopted the little characters. Everyone at the shelter is pleasant and patient and they work SO hard. It's always busy there and now they're up to their eyeballs in lost and surrendered and unwanted critters who need homes. But the staff keeps on smiling and working their backsides off. People like that are heroes. I hope the Dubuqe shelter can get some money/help to get it and the animals through these trying times.

    Pros

    by: ChinaGirl

We adopted one of our dogs from Dubuque Humane Society. The staff was wonderful. We had went into look several times at the many different types and sizes but really didn't know what we wanted. It was great to read how the staff had rated each pet, coach potatoe etc.... plus had each one crate tested and kid approved. Plus when they told us we could be put on a list to be called when a certain breed came in it made everything very simple. Excellent experience.

    Pros

    Very knowledgeable and helpful

    Cons

    none known

  • 33. Face of a child reunited with a lost pet... priceless

    by: callantlctoys

I totally thougt when picking up my sisters dog with her that had been lost and turned into the Dubuque Humane Society that it would be just a quick errand and never dreamed I would be effected by it. Well my eyes were wide open to the need for more people to be involved even though there was a great deal of volunteers there that day. I saw a man walking and as we were leaving playing with a dog in a grass area. I saw some girls cleaning out the cat area. I enjoyed the friendly knowlegable advice given to my sister about importance of a name tag and leashing her dog even though the dog is usually trustworthy. The staff gave her a background on beaglels and why the dog could have strayed so easily. It just opened my eyes to the fact that it was more than a "doggy jail" for runaways and strays. THe people really care there. They really want to volunteer their time.

    Pros

cared and made sure they were up to date on vet and had a vet that the dog was going to...caring

    Cons

Sad to see that there was such a need that wasn't known for pet addoption

    by: Maryjane5

I recently started working through the Dubuque Humane society. I will be helping out with the "reading with rover" activities and helping to plan childrens camps and other various activities. I am an animal lover and knew it in my heart that this would be a dream job for me. I would love to see the Dubuque Humane Society recieve the money for the remodel! It would be amazing and i know that all of the volunteers and staff, along with the animals would appreciate it so much!

    Pros

    friendly and loving staff

    Cons

The humane society is becoming too small for the number of animals it takes in, it could really use some updating

  • 41. Fantastic shelter

    by: nheacock

I volunteered at this animal shelter when I was still living in Dubuque and visited several times recently looking at their adoptable dogs. The people at the shelter truly love animals and are very friendly. When I volunteered there, I felt like the staff was very committed to ensuring that their animals were as adoptable as possible - from training as part of the "Head Start" program, to making sure that the kennels and cages were clean and presentable. The staff is knowledgeable and willing to discuss specific breed characteristics with potential adopters. Overall, they do a great job. Plus, the shelter is very active in the community, putting together events for people and their canine companions that are fundraisers to help all of those animals looking for their forever home.

    Pros

    Knowledgeable, committed staff

    Cons

There are always too many animals in need and not enough space in the shelter systems across America :(

Lily was found and brought to the Dubuque Regional Humane Society, where she was cared for prior to adoption Upon my seeing her on their website, I knew immediately that I simply must have her!! The staff was kind enough to "reserve" her for a few hours until I was able to get there to meet her. They have a very professional (and extremely busy) team, and are very helpful with any questions that I had. The animals there are well taken care for. It has been a very positive exerience as a first time shelter adoption.

  • 53. I am a repeat customer

    by: misamanda

I adopted my first black cat from the Dubuque Regional Humane Society a few years ago. I have always owned cats going back to my childhood but we had always gotten free kittens in the newspaper. I decided to try to the Humane Society because it just seemed convenient to have all the shots and the spay/neuter all included. My sons and I began our search for the perfect pet on the humane society's website. We had a few choices narrowed down by the time we walked through the door. It was very nice to be able to sit down in a small room alone with our pet candidates to see how we all got along. My sons were also very proud that not only were we getting a new pet but they were that cats heroes, saving them from a lonely owner-less life. An additional bonus was that for a very small additional fee, we were able to have our cat microchipped so that he would never be lost again. I also found it very helpful that you are provided a brief history on each pet at the shelter. They lay it all out on the line for you, the pros and cons of the animals there; you are given the info to make an informed decision on whether or not an animal is a good fit for you and your family. When my family and I decided to adopt another cat, there was no second-guessing. We headed right back to the Humane Society. There was one twist we did not expect. The Humane Society was having a "Better With a Buddy" special. This was basically a buy one get one free sale! In retrospect, I think this was an extremely ingenious plan. I do not know what kind of planning and negotiating went into the special with the area vets, etc. You got all the benefits of the adoption including the shots and the spay/neuter for both animals but for the same price as just one. I had NO intention of coming home with two more pets but I did and have never regretted it. In turn, two animals were saved that day instead of just the one I intended.

    Pros

Convenient hours, convenient locations, friendly and helpful staff.

    Cons

The shelter was located a little bit off the beaten path but that has been made easier by the addition of the Kennedy Mall location.

    by: willss

The Dubuque Humane Shelter is a great place to go to get a lifelong companion. We got our last dog from them. When we first saw him we were so sad because he looked terrible but the humane society had worked with him and told us that he would be a great addition. They were right. He is the best dog we have ever had. He gives so much unconditional love and has the most generous soul. He is a wonderful dog. We thank the Humane Society for all the great work that they do. We think they are very deserving of a makeover.

  • 59. We Adopted Abby The Siamese Himalayan Cat

    by: jbicha

In late October, my husband and I adopted Abby, a four year old Siamese/Himalayan mix that was left at the shelter due to barking dogs scared her.\r\nWe found her picture on the internet and knew we had to have her as we had just lost our 18 year old Siamese/Himalayan mix a week before. I am happy to report that Abby loves her new home and has adapted well. She is very playful, sweet and has a little mischievious streak in her. She is trying to win the heart of an older full blooded Siamese cat in the househould that is not so sure she wants to share the domain. Nonetheless, they are not hissing at each other and do chase each other around the house, but they are not licking each other just yet. At any rate, we are so glad we found Abby, and she was worth the 700 mile round trip drive we took to get her. Thank you Dubuque Humane Society. Abby is in a good home and I think she knows it !\r\n\r\nWe are lucky, she is lucky !\r\n\r\nJoe and Barb Bicha - White Bear Lake, Minnesota

    by: ElviraEby

We've adopted 3 animals from the humane society so far and have gotten super great service each and every time. We love to just drop by and look at the animals and they know us personally now. I've also enrolled my dog in the good dog academy and they have been great! my dog has learned to behave 100 percent better due to the staff. However, the place needs to be larger and the setup needs to be changed.

The staff was very nice to me almost 3 years ago when we decide that it was time to add to our family. We were a little nervous abotu bring in a new dog to our very hyper and active 6 month old springer. But they let us bring him to the shelter to meet the other that would later become part of our family. The whole thing went over well and we have been a happy little family for 3 years.

I adopted a wonderful 7 month old collie/shepherd puppy back in September 2006. She is a wonderful dog. She has been an incredible addition to my family and life. She is a very gentle well behaved dog. I'm very greatful to the Dubuque Humane Society for rescuing her and allowing me to adopt her.

  • 67. Dubuque Humane Society is Great

    by: ebetzer10

I have had the chance to be at the DHS many times in the past 5 years. We have adopted a cat from them, gone to Kids and Critters camp and just stopped in to make a donation. Each and every time we have been there I have been impressed with the staff and what they try to do for the animals that find themselves there. I wish that I could take more animals home with me but know that they are taken care of at DHS. It would be awesome to have a bigger facility so that more of the unwanted animals have a chance to find a new family to love them for the rest of their lives. DHS is a great place for a homeless animal.

    Pros

They try to save as many animals as they possibly can.

    Cons

    Too Small!!

  • 68. Always caring and compassionate

    by: nortons03

I have worked with many members of the Dubuque Humane Society staff. Each time, I see the drive and dedication that encompasses their organization. The Dubuque Humane Society is an amazing organization. The staff always know what they're doing and what they're talking about. They're extremely helpful and if they aren't sure on something they will always try and figure it out. My family has adopted almost every single pet we've ever had from the Dubuque Humane Society and there's no question about how much they care. The staff is truly devoted to helping and caring for animals. They don't just give you a pet but a life long friend.

    Pros

Extremely helpful, very nice, seems to know what they're doing

    Cons

Doesn't seem to have enough room for how many animals they're trying to help.

    by: sunnie7

The DRHS does a wonderful job with the resources they have. I have adopted a dog from them and got the chance to foster a cat. In each of these instances, I was given plenty of tools to make the transition for the animals and myself as smooth as possible. The staff really seems to care about the animals and want families to adopt them who will give the same care.

    Pros

    friendly staff, well-cared for pets

    Cons

    by: Bristol03

The DRHS staff does an excellent job!!!! It is always clean and the staff is always friendly and you can tell they truely care about the animals. I have adopted a few animals from there. I think the best decision they have made is to adopt out pitbulls. I also commend them on the "extras" they include in these adoptions. Such as the training and microchipping. What better way to help eliminate the stigma associated with this wonderful breed than help new owners with training. Thanks for all that you do and keep up the good work!

  • 80. Amazing assistance in adopting our new pet

    by: aviernes

After searching through 1000's of dogs on Petfinders.com we found Ronnie the Rattie at Dubuque Regional Humane Society. The staff were very helpful over the phone and after a long 3 hour drive from Chicago we got to met Ronnie and fell in love at 1st sight. The staff stayed on so we could complete the adoption papers and drive back to Chicago the same evening. It was obvious the staff were happy to see Ronnie adopted but sad to see him leave because one could see they too had fallen in love with him. I would like to see Dubuque Regional Humane Society win the makeover contest so they could expand and board more animals rescued from being lost or abandoned.

    Pros

Friendly staff, well behaved animals, lots of advice

    Cons

A little far for us to travel but well worth the trip

This location draws in a lot of business in which we might not get otherwise. I believe that the mall location also provides a theraputic spot for people of all types. Great job to all of the staff and I am proud to say that I work for the Dubuque Regional Humane Society!

  • 83. This is an amazing place

    by: KariLynn123

The Dubuque Regional Humane Society deserves this makeover. As you see they take in over 5,000 animals a year from owners, and that is not counting the animals they find as strays or that are lost. We got our first dog from the shelter 10 years ago- they were very helpful with helping us make our choice!\r\nWe recently took in 5 puppies into the shelter because we could not find home for them and I knew that the shelter would be a perfect place because they could find loving homes for them.\r\nBut as I walked into the shelter, I realized that they are running out of space, the cats need more room to play and of course the dogs. The Dubuque Regional Humane Society does so much for our community, they deserve this and not only does the shelter and its staff deserve this makeover but the animals do.

    Pros

Amazing staff, amazing animals, amazing place

    Cons

They need more room for all the animals they take in

  • 84. I'm proud to work at the DRHS

    by: twodognut

I've worked at the Dubuque Regional Humane Society for over 5 1/2 years. I'm proud of what we accomplish every day, month, and year with our small staff. We take in over 5,000 animals, have over 11,000 volunteers hours already in 2008, and have reached almost 6,000 kids through our Humane Education programs this year. We also investigate over 500 cruelty/neglect cases every year. Our Mall Center has a retail center, dog training area, "real life" rooms that feature dogs, and cat condominiums. If you're in the area, come and by and visit us!

This was my first time adopting a dog. My girl friend went out and picked out a couple of dogs she thought I would like. I went out later that day and fell in love with little ann a red bone coonhound. They let us take all the time we wanted with her. we took her outside and played with her for a bit. The adoption process was easy. I filled out a form and they decided we could take home that day.\r\n\r\nThey staff was very friendly. They did not push me into adopting.\r\n\r\nI am so very happy we added little ann to our family. I will keep coming back to the humane society for all my future pets.

I adopted two cats from Dubuque on Saturday and I cannot say enough good things about the folks working there. They are truly dedicated animal lovers! I know I would not have the patience or heart to do what they do every day.\r\n\r\nI also adopted my dog, Haley, from Dubuque last June. She was an older dog, but she has been an absolute pleasure to have around -- maybe because I wasn't the one who trained her! ;)\r\n\r\nIf you're looking for a new companion -- head to Dubuque first!\r\n\r\nAnd, spay and neuter your animals!

My family has adopted 2 animals from the Dubuque Humane Society. We have had excellent experiences both times. The staff let us have time to bond and choose the pet for us. I wouldn't go anywhere else. When I eventually move to a different place, I will be visiting this humane society to get a new family member. The training programs are great-people usually want a pet that is partially trained so I think it helps get move pets adopted. I also think the local advertising on the radio stations and at the mall are a great way of getting the word out!

  • 99. Thank you to DRHS staff, volunteers and all other supporters

    by: kenzie1391

First off, Congrats team on 7th place... keep going!\r\nSecond, I am greatly proud to work for DRHS, although we dont always have enough space or are sometimes breaking at the seams... we make it through every day. Thanks to our over 500 volunteers, each and every animal gets one on one attention and love. With a small staff, we get things done the right way, we support each other and give helpful advice. Just so everyone knows, you are the reason we make it. Without our volunteers, supporters and public, people here wouldnt enjoy their jobs as much as we do and days would be much harder to get through. Granted we have a small place, we do our best to find all of our animals loving homes. To anyone who asks, i would proudly recommended DRHS if you are looking for any pet.. from a dog or cat, to a snake, to a goat, we have seen it all and send as many as we possibly can to loving households. So again, thank you to everyone who has helped out!

  • 102. The Friendliest Place to Adopt From..

    by: Gabzilla

I am part of the staff at the Dubuque Humane Society and I love my job! I enjoy the atmosphere that I work in. Everyone does their best to get anyone and everyone adopted. i love that I work enough to get to really know the dogs... It is always nice whenyou can walk into a shelter and the staff knows what they have and aren't just looking out of a book to see what the temperment of the dog is or how they would act in certain environments. I personally can say that I think that I know most of the dogs that step foot in that place I get ot know on a certain leverl that I think would help to match them to their future, permanent home. I love to work with everyone and having the animals there jsut makes it that much better. The Dubuque Humane Society is one of the best places to adopt from, not only because we are so friendly, but becasue we all work very hard trying to get to know everything that walks through that door so gthat we can find them an awesome home to live out the rest of their years. However long or short that may be! I love the Dubuque Humane Society!!

    Pros

Great environment to work, with friendly co-workers..

My cat and dog was both saved from being put down. They have made are family complete and our children love them so much. They are well adjusted pets and never had any problems with them, We heard about this dog's sad story, and at first was worried, but after meeting for the first time, we fell in love with her and her personality. It even makes our children more loving and kind as well, I can not see our lives with out our dog or our cat. They are just one of our children that we will protect forever. and as much as we have changed there lives, they have changed ours for the the best as well.
