  • 1. NEW home for SIMON!!!

    by: Stoker

Columbia Second Chance is ran by very caring and devoted individuals. You can see their presence at almost every pet fair & event in Central MO. Neglected, abused, and otherwise unwanted animals are found NEW homes thanks to this NOT-FOR-PROFIT agency. On a whim, we adopted an adorable kitten, Simon, from one of their fairs. Upon bringing him home, and for years thereafter, he did not get along with ANY of our other 5 rescued pets. We went from harmony to chaos. Simon started out at a tiny 5" and amazingly transformed into something horselike (very tall & leggy) - with the aggressiveness of your typical rottweiler (they can be friendly). After attacking me & trying all fathomable options, we contacted 2nd Chance. While this was an extenuating circumstance, they helped us find a "petless" loving home for him in Columbia. Simon adjust SO well to his new surroundings, not having the stress of competing w/ other animals, that he became an instant success with this couple. The wonderful thing is, 2nd Chance called me to let me know how happy the new "parents" were. This made me happy, instead of sad, for Simon.

    Pros

Lots of caring animal lovers devote their time, energy, and money; high success rate on placements

    Cons

  • 7. Columbia's 2nd Chance Rocks!

    by: wbressman

We have fostered cats for Second Chance and have adopted 2 animals from them. The group of volunteers they have are remarkable. They make the effort to take the animals to local pet shops for exposure and are willing to do whatever it takes to help the pets they harbor.

Have to turn away some animals because of space

  • 8. Friendliest staff!

    by: tommilynn

Our family dog died recently and we donated all of his old food and accessories to Columbia Second Chance. Every time we go in for a visit the staff are so friendly and the animals look so happy, even though they all need homes desperately, they are being well taken care of temporarily at CSC. We're happy we could help them out with our donations!

    Pros

very friendly staff, beautiful animals, and no animals being put to sleep!

    Cons

need more funding so they can stay open more often.

I have been volunteering for CSC & SNAP for several years now but everyday I am amazed at what has been accomplished. So many animals are placed with loving homes every year! Being a crazy animal lover, I felt right at home at CSC. If you want to help animals, this is the place to volunteer.

  • 14. A second-chance to find a companion

    by: tjddh8

After losing two kittens to unusualy circumstances (one passed after complications during spaying and the other escaped the house and ran away) my girlfriend and I were reluctantly looking for a new kitten. We found Second-Chance and they set us up with the perfect cat. Sadie has been in our home for about 6 months and she is perfect. Second Chance provides well adjusted, house ready animals (trained, fixed, and used to people and animals). Sadie moved right in and took over and the volunteers actually care about the animals. They are sad to give them up from their own homes (they act as foster parents) but happy to see them find happiness. In short, you get the pet you desire while saving money. We got a second chance to have a kitty by dealing with Second Chance.

    Pros

    Healthy, spayed/neutered animals

    Cons

Space Limitations (can't take them all home)

  • 15. Great Organization

  • 16. A Great Group of People Dedicated to Helping Animals

    by: esaday

I have been involved with CSC for almost a year now and it is a wonderful organization. Its group of volunteers are dedicated to helping as many animals (and people) as possible. Friendly, enthusiastic, knowledgable on animal issues, CSC takes in as many animals as they can from the Humane Society and sticks with those animals until they find the right home for each of them. They will not adopt to people who treat animals like objects or throwaway property. They work hard to rehabilitate issues that might hinder adoption and are always ready and willing to help owners with issues, so that their pets stay with the family they love. They provide a 'furever' foster program, which gives assistance to families who take in animals with special health issues. The Ranch and the Catty Shack are two locations where they house animals not in foster care, and the facilities are clean and their animals well-taken care of. They work to be involved with the community so that they can promote animal welfare, doing events like Paws in the Park and the upcoming Wizard of Oz event. They also help with animal transport and network with other rescue organizations (like Best Friends) in order to be as effective as possible. Some of their volunteers participate in SNAP, which provides support for feral cat populations and spays/neuters the cats so that they don't continue to reproduce. These cats get have quality of life, provide a service (by killing rodents), but don't add to the city's overpopulation problem. Overall, it's a great organization that I am proud to be a part of.

    Pros

Dedicated Volunteers, No-Kill Shelter, Committed to Animal Welfare

    Cons

Need More Volunteers so We Can Help More Animals

  • 17. My CAts Were Rescued With Help From Columbia Second Chance

    by: MarathonWoman

Several years ago my friend was living near a garbage collection area and noticed a group of feral cats. She decided to make it her mission to get all the cats fixed and into homes or a shelter. With the help of second chance, who provided her with cages to catch them one at a time, all the cats were caught and fixed. I ended up with 4 kittens, which I still have and love, and she ended up with 2 kittens. Three kittens were given to other friends. The cats were taken by Second Chance. Thank you for your help!

    Pros

    Very helpful and flexible

    Cons

  • 18. great rescue

    by: ubear10

Second Chance is a great place that really helps out CMHS. They take dogs and cats from the shelter and give them a chance in a no kill environment. One of my fosters went to CSC and although he had an incident when he was at the ranch with another dog he was still adopted to a family that sounded like a great fit for him. I have had a few bad experiences with some of the volunteers but that does not mean that the organization is bad as a whole. For example one volunteer told me that this foster that is mentioned above would never be adopted because he was a bad dog, at the time this really disappointed me and I found out later that he had been adopted two weeks before. This summer they took a dog from the shelter that had been there for a very long time, I am not sure if she has been adopted but I do know that she was a very sweet dog and I am glad that she went to Second Chance. The same thing happened this fall with a 10 year old pure bred Maine Coon cat I hope that he has been adopted because Huffy is one of the sweetest cats in the world. If it weren't for Second Chance CMHS would have to put down a lot more animals than they do already. Thank you so much Second Chance.

    Pros

they help out CMHS a lot

    Cons

none that i can think of

  • 22. Second Chance is #1

    by: twbaker

After our cat companion of 15 years died, we wanted to add a new family member that we could all love. Our son waited a long time to have a pet who would play, sit with and love him as much as the adults in the family. Second Chance listened to our wishes and help steer us toward what we were looking for. The foster mom was very knowledgable, honest and interested in finding us a great fit. We adopted two wonderful cat companions who are purrfect additions to our family. I was most impressed with the attitude of all the volunteers that emphasized finding the forever home for their animals vs just moving them out the door. When I had questions after the adoption, they volunteers were available and willing to keep in touch. Thank you Second Chance!

    Pros

    Friendly, dedicated volunteers

    Cons

    none

  • 24. Give them a chance!!!

    by: nauticalrose

My knowledge of this rescue is mainly based upon my knowledge of a few of the folks who dedicate their lives to it!!! These are the most dedicated people I have ever known, they are available 24/7, they foster animals that they really shouldn't, putting the animal's needs before their own children's needs (not really, but close!). This rescue also offers an opportunity for people on probation or parole to do community service work, some other shelters will turn offenders away due to their convictions. I say, if a person want to do free community service work working with animals, let them, it shouldn't matter what their crime is!!!

    Pros

    Very involved in the community

    Cons

    Can't think of any...

  • 25. Just what they say

  • 26. Second Chance really does give animals a second chance to find a home

    by: Char2009

I found Columbia Second Chance on accident. I was new to the area and walked into Petco to get food for my lizard and there they were. At the time they did not have an Adoption Center and were at Petco weekly trying to find homes for their numerous animals. I fell in love w/ one of the dogs they had there and filled out an application that day. Since then I have been volunteering and have fostered many animals for them. They have several foster homes which help them to help more animals each year and they have 2 facitilys for animals that they don't have enough foster homes for. We are an all volunteer rescue so it is difficult to give enough attention to all the animals at the ranch and catty shack but we continually try to get more volunteers to go out to these locations to socilize the animals there. We also try to rotate all animals into foster homes so they have that chance to feel the love of having a family even before they are adopted. CSC also has a great relationship w/ Central Missouri Humane Society. We try to take animals from there that we think we can help find homes for. sometimes they might not show well at CMHS so we take them and try to relax them so they can find their perfect home. It is a great organization and I am honored to be able to be a part of it.

    Pros

They work hard to make sure all the animals taken in find great homes

    Cons

Not enough help for the ranch and catty shack

  • 27. Go CMHS!!!!!!

I am so excited for the CMHS! I really hope that they win this makeover. No shelter deserves it more than they do. They have such a great staff and beautiful, cute animals that need good homes. if they had a better facility to run their business from, they would be so much better off!

    Pros

amazing staff, fun place, lovable pets

    Cons

  • 29. A wonderful cooperation between Second Chance and the Central Missouri Humane Society

    by: BarbaraHerlong

This is an example of the cooperation between Second Chance and the local humane society. The day after my cat had died, my daughter took me to the Central Missouri Humane Society to look for a new cat. I saw one that I liked but was not quite ready to adopt. A few days later, I called to see if she was still there. I was told that she had contacted the resperatory illness that is often found in shelters and would be going to a foster home to be medicated. My daughter knows some one from Second Chance and told her I was looking for a new cat. She called and invited me to go to their new center to visit with 7 cats that one of their volunteers was fostering. I was so surprised when the little cat I saw at the humane society was one of them ( It was Iris and there was no mistaking her frilly tail with its white tip). I found out that this volunteer had picked up these cats from the humane society to medicate them. I ended up adopting Iris as well as Chance from the group that she brought to show me. They told me that they quite often do this and if they think some of these cats would fit into their program they keep them in order to lighten the load at the overcrowded shelter. From this wonderful cooperation, I acquired two lovely cats and both Second Chance and the Humane Socirty benefited.

  • 32. Second Chance for Me too!

    by: loverossb

All the reviews have already lauded on how CSC gives animals a real second chance for life and a loving family...but my review is about how CSC gave ME a second chance for life too. After my long time companion, Ebby Boy, died...I felt lost and alone. My grief was very raw and very deep. Then my wonderful step daughter, Jacci, told me about her rescue volunteer work in St. Louis. Jacci gave me the idea of stepping out of my grief and doing something proactive to help other animals in need. That's when I met the wonderful people at CSC and decided to foster in honor of my Ebby Boy. It's been a life saver for me. Now going through a very painful divorce, fostering even more dogs than my husband would ever allow, is once again giving me a reason to get up each day! These wonderful doggies often give me far more than I feel I give them! My life has been deeply enriched by becoming one of the "family" at Columbia Second Chance!"

    Pros

100% family and kid friendly environment, Totally dedicated staff of volunteer, Great Foster Program

    Cons

What's not to love about CSC?

  • 34. A second chance for life!

    by: Celexa

I tried to adopt a cat one year ago. He was a very large 4 year old boy. I have an 8 year old cat that was used to living without other pets. When he came into the house there was a lot of hissing. He was only 4 and she was 8 and he wanted to play. My cat just didn't get it. Then my cat ended up getting sick. She had diarrhea and woudn't eat. She lost a lot of weight. I had to take her to the vet. She was there for 3 days getting fluids. Long story short....Columbia Second Chance took the cat back and gave me back my refund because I was not about to bring another cat into my house. It was really sad because all I wanted was another playmate for my cat while I was at work. I hope someday to get another cat from Second Chance. They are a wonderful group of people that show a lot of careing for pets. They devote a lot of time and attention to taking care and trying to make sure that as many animals as possible are rescued and can have a home.

    Pros

  • 45. Columbia would be lost without Second Chances & Humane Societ

    by: dawnrh

I really don't think Boone County residents or those in the surronding communities know how much both the Humane Society and Second Chances do for our community. Without either one of these agencies I would hate to see where all the homeless and rescued would go. I don't even want to think about that. So many people make donations to every human disease known to mankind but forget about the poor animals. Dogs especially have done so many good things for us humans the least thing we can do to repay them is to help them in their time of need. Please everyone reading this please help your local shelters, and spay and neuter your pets.

    Pros

Animals get a second chance hence the name

    Cons

The only con is that they can't take on more animals

  • 46. Foster Family

    by: monk419

I think Second Chance & the Humane Society do great work for the community. They take in all the poor defenseless animals that don't have homes for one reason or another. I love all animals & think if someone is looking for a good companion they should visit the shelters first as these animals need loving homes. Plus you are saving them from the chance of being put down. I wish I could take them all in, as I'm sure lots of people feel the same way. I appreciate all they do to help care for these wonderful animals.

Columbia Second Chance partners with the Central Missouri Humane Society, taking several of their animals each week to place (sometimes over very long periods of time) in great homes. Without Columbia Second Chance, CMHS would euthanize more animals. Thus CSC literally gives hundreds of animals a year a "second chance" at life. My mom adopted our first family dogs from CSC over 8 years ago. They each had been there for over 6 months. The staff delivered them to our home freshly bathed and stayed until the dogs felt comfortable. Their volunteer staff are individually great people, but together they are miracle workers. Can't say enough great things about them!

    Pros

amazingly dedicated volunteers, very caring, take on as many animals as they possibly can

    Cons

because they are volunteer-run, it can take a few days for someone to get back with you.

Columbia Second Chance is a great partner. They took in our foster dog from the Central Missouri Humane Society when she needed medical care that CMHS couldn't provide. She got better and, it took awhile, but fairly recently that quirky little pup got adopted! We're so thankful to Second Chance for all they do. They're a great partner that fills a niche that CMHS can't always fill.

    Pros

    All around great.

    Cons

    Sometimes full.

If it weren't for CSC and all they do to place so many of our animals into good homes, we would not be able to make so many people and pets happy. Thanks for all you do! The fosters are great too!

    Pros

They ease the burden on the Humane Society

    Cons

    Not enough of them!
