  • 4. To the great folks at the Ellensburg Animal Shelter, I'm sure sorry you didn't make the top twenty

    by: JulieKaySmiths0n

When I checked to see how the shelter makeover contest top twenty had finished, it was with tears of relief that our little shelter in Madison County, Ohio, had finished in 13th place. \r\n\r\nThere were also tears of sadness that your shelter got bumped from the top twenty. You are so needing and deserving help; I pray that this contest will bring you a lot more local attention and donors and that Ellensburg will get plenty of help to go with all the prayers being winged straight to Heaven on your behalf! \r\n\r\nGod bless each of you!\r\n\r\nJulie and Wiggles Blue Heeler

    Pros

try hard, knowledgeable, caring, friendly, dedicated, devoted

    Cons

working without a net like our shelter (Madison County, Ohio)

  • 6. Safety and Security for Pets and Volunteers

    by: barbprater

The fact that pets often can soon move on to new homes from the shelter evidences top management knowhow and super utilization of their available covered space. The numerous regular volunteers, pleased with what they are accomplishing. Enabling pets to be better leash-trained and so make a good impression on prospective owners is one factor. Bringing challenged pets back to top health is a priority. And, the volunteer training for locating specially fitted right homes through good Internet contacts is another factor. Staff assuredly makes optimum use of any funding coming their way.

    Pros

Very rarely is euthanization resorted to. Staff trains well and requires volunteer regularity and persistance in finding homes for pets. The surrounding open area for running pets is nice.

    Cons

Though utilized wisely, buildings are old and portions must serve overlapping purposes.

  • 7. The shelter with a Big Heart

    by: LoveMy6Babies

I had a friend to mention about your shelter, and I wanted to help. After reading your message above, even though you have a limited amount of space, you have big hearts to help out all animals big and small. I also applaude you and all your staff.

    Pros

    caring for all animals

    Cons

    limited space

  • 8. The shelter that could

    by: kmirro

I've had dealings with the shelter a few times. We adopted our first dog as a married couple from the shelter and they worked hard to make sure we were a good fit and that we were truly ready for a pet. Since then, I've called upon them when I've found lost dogs in my neighborhood and they've always been very helpful. Very deserving!

    Pros

Helpful staff, dedication to animals and owners.

    Cons

    Size of shelter.

  • 9. Great staff!

    by: gunnerandsophia

Before I started volunteering I adopted a cat and almost adopted a dog from this shelter. The staff is very helpful and friendly and eager to answer your questions. They do their best to give you a full description of the animal of interest and even let you bring in your dog to see if they get along!

    Pros

    Great staff.

    Cons

    Small space.

  • 10. Big hearts in a little shelter!

    by: cowboylady

The animals are well taken care of and cages are clean. Volunteers work hard, are well educated, and a great help. The people are doing the best they can with what they have and they are exceeding what most shelters are capable of.

    Pros

Everyone associated with the shelter is knowledgeable, the volunteers are willing, the animal are clean and friendly.

    Cons

The people skills of the shelter workers could stand a little improvement.

  • 11. We need to support this shelter!

    by: laurapie

This shelter has really worked hard to turn things around. It would be great to improve the size of the shelter so the animals and community are better served.

    Pros

    Dedicated hardworking staff and volunteers.

    Cons

    Limited Resources!

  • 12. Ellensburg Shelter

    by: tamralouise

It's great for this shelter can succeed in this small town, but it is really needed, and they truly deserve the funds!

    Pros

Many pets from the shelter have been rescued by friends of mine, and they couldn't be more happier.

    Cons

Unfortunately, I have not yet been to the shelter.

  • 13. This is a wonderful shelter--needs makeover tho!

    by: ElizabethStewart

This little town, and its really wonderful volunteers could so use the means to give a hand up to the canines and felines that they are trying to serve with so little. The shelter here does its best with what they have, which is limited. \n\nGood luck Ellensburg Animal Shelter, and keep up the good works!

    Pros

clean, they do what they can

    Cons

    they need a makeover--badly!

  • 15. Great shelter

    by: PandaLu

My main comment is about the director of our shelter, Paula Hake. She has really brought attention to this shelter since she took over, and has striven to improve the facility in many ways. She seems to work endlessly and tirelessly to educate the public about the shelter's many needs, and has worked to bring about more funding, in very creative ways. \n\nShe is an absolute star of a director and we (and the animals she cares for) are very fortunate to have her.

    Pros

Excellent, caring staff with most excellent director!

    Cons

    Small, cramped

  • 16. Caring, Clean and User-Friendly

    by: fiddlebright

I have been in Ellensburg for 38 years and have had lots of pleasant dealings with this shelter. Whenever I can, I try to donate whatever they need, as they are sorely short of financial support. Their support from the community is truly heartwarming, but they need more funding to create an even better "halfway house" for the poor souls who seem to fall through the cracks in our society. Considering that this tiny little place receives animals from the entire county, not just the city, they are doing a phenomenal job with the limited resources they have. Bravo! Let's help them get it done!

    Pros

Wonderful, motivated workers who care about animals

    Cons

    Limited space, staff and funds

This is a wonderful shelter...every time we go we always fall in love with the puppies and kittens!! I know it REALLY does need a makeover beacuse it isn't to big and they are really always full when I come in so I think they would need to expand and maybe have some more room on the inside!! The people that help you are very nice!! They let you spend time with the dog or cat before you make a descion! I would really love our shelter to win beacuse it would really help out our area!!! \r\nPlease give our shelter points..!!\r\n:)

  • 20. What tremendous obstacles this amazing shelter has overcome!!

    by: AnneM

I did alot of reading to see what this group did, and it is utterly AMAZING what they have done with their determination and hard work and volunteers. Obviously there is a great need for more money to fund some of the improvements that are sorely needed.

    Pros

This shelter has worked wonders with its very LIMITED resources.

    Cons

THEY NEED SOME BIG BUCKS to help fulfill their needs.

  • 21. A great place, but needs a makeover!

    by: kluckingbear

My golden got lost several months ago and was picked up by a wonderful citizen who then took her to our local animal shelter. Belle is 12 years old and doesn't like being away from her family--the shelter took very good care of her and were extremely friendly when I picked her up. The shelter does need some physical improvements--the type that only money can buy.

    Pros

Very friendly staff goes out of their way to help and care for pets

    Cons

    Facility needs improvement

Our family adopted the "BEST DOG EVER" from the Ellensburg Animal Shelter almost 5 years ago. Everybody loves Woo-dee-woo. I was looking for a cat and came home with my "cat-dog". He loves sitting on the back of the couch with his tail wrapped around your neck and he loves to sit around a campfire and howl.\r\n\r\nThe staff has always been very caring.

  • 27. ellensburg animal shelter

    by: karen07

Ellensburg animal shelter is clean, welcoming, and the folks that work there always let us ( I have 3 daughters) in the kitty room to play with the kittens. We have adopted 2 animals from the shelter. Both times, the screening process was very comprehensive. I've adopted from other shelters who don't even know if you intend to make the dog a forever pet or feed it to your boa constricter. Paula, our shelter administrator has stuck it out through thick and thin, good and bad - mostly bad. My most poignant memory of her "bad" is when at a city council meeting, the humane society of WA was there saying our facilility was substandard and needed a change immediately. The facilities and staff were absolutely inadequate in size and numbers to meet the demands of this facility. Our mayor at the time, wisely paused and asked, what about volunteers? At this point, the shelter temporary volunteer, volunteer coordinator spoke up. Due to our being a college town, many of our volunteers are seasonal. Students go home for a few weeks during the summer, spring break, etc., In addition, the work that is required is frankly meant for trained professionals, like euthanasia. Our mayor asked, unashamedly, "can't a volunteer be trained to do that?" Paula didn't throw anything, she didn't roll her eyes, she just thanked the council for their time. What a woman! Consequently, she is greatly admired by myself and many. Our volunteers are to be commended as well. They have a heart for the animals, and that is a gift to our community. Some of them have been coming and walking dogs and cleaning cages for a number of years. There is no budget for volunteer recognition or marketing. Spay and neutering is one of Paula's passions as she has a giant sticker on her back window encouraging everyone to do so for their pets and for the health of our community and the animal population. She is all about educating the public, finding forever homes for the animals, and being a resource to Ellensburg.

    Pros

loving caring professional staff and volunteers

    Cons

not enough of them, not enough hours, too much area to support

  • 28. EAS review

    by: pethouse

Staff and volunteers have done wonders recently finding homes for unwanted pets and reducing euthanasia rates. A larger, more modern facility would give them the ability to do so much more.

    Pros

    Wonderful, dedicated staff and volunteers.

    Cons

    Facility needs remodel.

  • 29. Awesome Place

    by: Funinthesun878

This shelter has done so much for so many people. I know people who have adopted animals from the Ellensburg Animal Shelter and had great success with them. They know what they are doing and care deeply about the animals. They want these homeless animals to find good caring homes. These people who work and volunteer for the shelter, AND the animals who reside there deserve this make over! You will not find a more deserving community!!!

    by: antutino

I'm hoping they win so that they are able to help us out in Kittitas. We are a small community and many people go to Ellensburg on a daily basis. Kittitas has a real dog problem that hopefully will be able to be helped when we will the makeover! That is why I'm on here in support of the community!

    Pros

Try there hardest to find homes for all animals.

    Cons

Too small to help with surrounding cities dog problem.

  • 47. Great place!

    by: debbiemetzler

Every time I've had to go into the shelter, they have been very kind and helpful. I have found a couple of dogs that had escaped from their yards and the shelter managers were so quick in finding their owners. I've known a couple people who worked at the shelter and said they really treat the animals great and overall do the best that they can. The only "con" is that their hours aren't always the most convenient -- they don't open until 12pm.

    Pros

    great staff!

    Cons

    odd hours

  • 48. Wonderful shelter that does the best with what its has

    by: funkiemunkee

This is a great shelter. Staff and volunteers are very helpful and friendly. Every time I have visited, there has always been someone who has been able to help me and answer any questions I have had. They usually have a good idea about the animal's temperament and take the time to get to know the animals in their care, which is very helpful for those looking to adopt. They have a huge field that is available to exercise the dogs. A great volunteer program assures the dogs get lost of attention and walks. The cats have an innovative indoor/outdoor enclosure that permits the cats to safely spend some time 'outside'. It has always been a clean and pleasant environment. The only downside is that they could really use additional funding. This would enable them to hire additional staff and be open during longer hours. They do the very best that they can with the resources they have available. Ellensburg is not huge, but it is growing rapidly, and they are kept extremely busy. Many pet owners in Ellensburg allow their dogs to roam unsupervised, so additional personnel to help curb strays and for enforcement would be great. This is a primarily agricultural community, with many pet owners that have a "hands off" approach to spaying/neutering and vaccinating. It would be wonderful if they could expand to further serve the community with education as well as low cost spay/neuter/vaccination programs that could encourage the community members to become more actively involved in their pet's health care and preventing uncontrolled pet breeding.

    Pros

very caring staff, goes the extra mile!

    Cons

really needs additional funding and support for new building

  • 49. Animal Shelters

    by: holstergal

I don't know what we would do with out it. I live 15 miles out side of Ellensburg and people are always dumping unwanted pets out on this highway. Many times I have picked them up and kept them but more times than not I have had to take them to the shelter. I've seen first hand how they are cared for and it's wonderful. They keep a list of people that are looking for pets so they can match up people to the right animal. Each week we have pictures of all the animals in the news papers and a little info. about them. It has always amazed me how many they find homes for. Their goal here is homes, not death. Their biggest problem is our town is growing fast and their building is very small. too small to keep up with the demands. They have a wonderful staff and volunteers that walk the dogs and such but they can't work miracles. They need room. I wish that the goal of all shelters was to find GOOD homes but unfortunately it isn't. In Ellensburg the animals are kept clean and safe and placed in homes.

    Pros

They sucessfully adopt out the animals

    Cons

Their building is way too small for the demand

  • 50. Great Animals, Intimidating Staff

    by: Reyawick

We went to look a possibly adopting a cat from the Ellensburg Animal Shelter and the lady who we talked to there was kind of rude and treating us like dumb college students who get pets and don't take care of them. I know lots of people don't take care of their animals like they should but that doesn't mean I don't and just because I was in college didn't give them the right to assume I wouldn't be a good owner.\n\n\nThis was just one person though. Other than that the place is good. The animals need homes. \n\nThis shelter could use a makeover.

    Pros

    Clean, helps animals

    Cons

Staff seems stand offish and rude

  • 51. Animal lovers

This shelter does a great job with what they have to work with. It is time for some updates and more help to take the burden off of the over-worked staff. They all do an awesome job considering that they work in a building that they have out grown. Thanks again for the wonderful addition to our family!!!!

    Pros

    Well run

    Cons

  • 52. Doing a great job with what they have!!!!!!!!!!

    Cons

  • 53. dedication

    by: jrouse

I'll never forget an article in the local paper about the head of the shelter working for days trying to capture a scared, hungry dog. It needed someone, and she cared enough to help. To have someone that dedicated, you know all the animals in her shelter must be well taken care of.

    Pros

    such heart

    Cons

    not a one !!

  • 54. Best in the West

    by: janbryant

Being a widow and needing some company and a companion, I had been visiting the dogs at the Ellensburg Animal Shelter quite often for some time. I always came away with a favorite -- not quite favorite enough to adopt! Then one day, I went inside to ask a couple of questions about a couple of dogs in the run. There were too many cons for a retired woman to handle. But after chatting for a little while, it was suggested that I take a look at Abby who was inside rather than outside when I was looking. I went around to the outside and called her by name and out she came, sat down and looked at me with a big question mark on her face. With all the other barking going on, she was very calm. Being told that she had very good manners and liking what I read on her profile, I decided to give her a try. This was on a Tues. and on Wed. I took her home. The staff picked a good match for me! She is now 'at home' with me and seems very content -- as I am!

    Pros

    Knowledgable Staff

    Cons

Pretty crowded -- Not their fault!

  • 55. Make room

    by: DianeRiley

Recently we found a young cat that had obviously been dropped off near my very rural part of the valley. It was thin, starving, and crying and was obvious to us all it was not accustomed to the wild and below freezing weather. We took the cat in to feed it and keep it warm but because I am severely alergic to cat dander I could not give it a permanent home. The shelter responded to this situtation kindly and without hesitation when I called to bring the abandoned cat to them. I was astounded by the shelter itself. It is old and extremely small, yet run efficiently. The staff was cheerful, caring, and obviously loved their work. But, as I waited for our refugee to be taken into the shelter, I noticed a few of the staff (or perhaps volunteers) take out some of the dogs guests for a walk. They had on their "adopt me" coats and they looked so cute. But, I also felt really bad for them and the dog walkers. The shelter is located between a transfer station (garbage dump) and a rail road track. Not only is the location a put off, but it must be really distracting and unmemorable for the walking dogs and handlers. I hope with all my heart you win the makeover contest. You deserve it so much.

    Pros

    courteous and caring

    Cons

    small, crowded, and old

    by: EmandCody

I just want to say Ellensburg Shelter has done a good job for such a small and limited operation in spreading the word on adoption and spay and neuter, i have 3 rescue dogs and know there are many many more that need to be spayed and neutered and adopted into a good home. I wish we could do more advertising in this county about that.

Spreading the word on spay and neuter

    Cons

    Needs more advertising

    by: tiggersmommy

The staff of the Ellensburg Animal Shelter work hard to educate and help the community with animal spaying and licensing. It is hard to do such things with such a small facility. I have been in the facility and it is cramped, the staff do not have adequate work area to help the animals and community. \n\nOur community has more than just cats and dogs. Ellensburg is a big rural area, many people have horses. With a facility that could house horses and other larger animals, our community members could adopt and help more than just cats and dogs.

    Good staff and morals

    Cons

    small area

    by: kaden

The Ellensburg Animal Shelter staff is a blessing to all the little strays in town. There would be no hope for any of them without this shelter. This shelter offers a second chance to so many. We could never thank the staff and volunteers enough for all their hard work and dedication. Keep up the good work!!!

    Pros

    Wonderful staff!

    Cons

    Can't think of even one.

  • 64. Terrific staff and volunteers

    by: leearmstrong

The Ellensburg Shelter is an inspiring place to volunteer. The animals have the best quarter that limited funding and space allow. Cats have a feline hotel environment, and dogs have clean, relatively spacious and comfortable quarters. The staff takes great pains to treat all animals with loving care. The volunteer program has greatly benefitted the shelter, since all the animals get extra tlc daily. We are fortunate to have this facility in our community. Special kudos to Paula Hake, who is a saint.

    Pros

    caring, compassionate, quick service

    Cons

only that it could use a makeover but funds are short

  • 65. Keep it up!

    by: KerryTechie

Two months ago I was looking for a pet, I had finally found an apartment that allowed cats and was more than tired of living alone. I went into the shelter to look over the cats. I wanted a young male (females have way too much PMS....trust me), Techie (then called Clem *shudder* horrible name for him) was a little older than I was thinking of, mostly because I wanted to be able to harness train him. But a year old isn't that old. He was very affectionate (and more manageable than the hyperactive little girl kitten who was also there). The staff was willing to put him on hold for me, I picked him up the very next day after I had finished moving into my new place.\r\nThe staff here was very friendly and informative, and sincerely care for the welfare of their animals even after they've been adopted out. I adore my little boy and wouldn't trade him for the world.

    Pros

    very low euthanasia rate

    Cons

    underfunded and needs help

The Ellensburg Animal Shelter is alway very clean. The cages where the animals are kept is always clean and neat. Staff is very friendly and always willing to help anyway they can. The animals seem to be as happy and they can be locked up. I don't mean that in a bad way. I always hate going in there because i feel sorry for the animals and want to take them home, but I have enough critters! Everyone in the Ellensburg Animal Shelter deserves a BIG thumbs up! They do a GREAT job!

    Pros

    by: ddines

I visited this shelter with my friend who is a volunteer there. She gave me a tour. At first I was so surprised at how small and old and "decrepid" it was but then I met more of the volunteers and staff and they were so dedicated and the animals were given so much love and attention. They have a nice field out back to play with the dogs which I think is just wonderful. The shelter itself needs help but it was just amazing to me what they did, how they were organized, and what they have accomplished with so little.

  • 80. Proud to manage this shelter!

    by: Trudy21

Having just finished the Ellensburg Animal Shelter’s statistics for 2007 – I must admit to being very pleased. As many of you know, in 2005 our euthanasia rate was 70%, and then in 2006 we managed through sheer guts and determination to lower the euthanasia rate down to 8.3%. And in 2007 I can proudly say our euthanasia rate again dropped to a very, very low 4.3%. For a municipal, open admissions shelter that is also in charge of animal control to be able to boast such a low euthanasia rate is nothing short of PHENOMENAL! We have saved animals that were on “deaths door” injured, abused, old, diseased, crippled and even breeds many places won’t touch like Pitbulls – yes - Pitbulls the most misunderstood breed in the world and shelters are full of them. It has been amazing what we have accomplished! This low euthanasia rate has not been easy and has taken the help of many dedicated volunteers and rescue groups who believe in us. We are pathetically short on space and resources, but we still continue to try. On top of this – not one animal left our shelter un-altered. I want a world where no euthanasia is necessary, but since there are 15 dogs and 45 cats born for every ONE person it is impossible to find a home for every animal and the real problem is stopping the surplus of animals born. We have done a fantastic job with the limited resources we have and I hope and pray we are considered for this makeover as we deserve it and could do so much more then we already have. I am very proud to manage this tiny - yet mighty shelter.

    Pros

  • 87. Why Ellensburg's Animal Shelter is Dear to Me

    by: damarpi

Twenty years ago, after our terrier was run over, we received a call from the person who ran the Ellensburg Animal Shelter at the time, saying that they had a little dog, a tiny, wavy-haired, gray and beige terrier-poodle mix with an underbite, who needed us. She had recognized this one as a really good dog, and she held on to him much longer than was permitted, not wanting to euthanize him. For 17 years, Toby was an excellent friend and companion. \n\nThe Humane Society had taken Toby from a home where there was severe, even lethal, neglect and abuse of the animals, and he was always a strange little thing, with truly unique behavior. If someone (including me) moved too rapidly in his direction, or if he pulled too hard on the leash and choked himself, he would cringe and shriek -- a piercing, awful noise that was alarming to the one approaching him and really embarrassing when we were out in public. He trembled through every bath and haircut as though I were Jack the Ripper about to disembowel him. Sometimes he would take his dry kibbles from his dish and arrange them in circular patterns on the living room floor before eating them. \n\nOdd, yes, but he was a truly sweet, loving little fuzz-ball, soaking up all the love and attention he could get and giving it back tenfold. He completely endeared himself to my husband by giving him long, soulful looks and then quickly ducking his head under his arm, and back to the soulful look, under the arm, and so on. He was smart and obedient, made us laugh a lot, and could walk and relieve himself on any two of his legs when the ground was cold and wet. \n\nWhen he died, I got another dog (from another source), but not a good one. After he had destroyed two couches and started peeing on my bed, I took him to the shelter to ask them to put him down. Going in, I couldn't keep the tears back, because somehow I had already come to love the little s.o.b. The woman behind the counter took one look at me and knew this was the wrong thing to do. She went through several solutions and finally came up with one I hadn't tried yet. So I took him home and tried it -- and it worked! He abandoned his evil ways and became the good friend and companion I wanted. \n\nSo I owe years of happiness to the Ellensburg Animal Shelter and its wise and compassionate personnel. I'm sure I am only one of many.\n\n

The cats unfortuneatly have a much smaller space to play. This shelter has an incredibly low kill rate, which is fantastic. They work with other animal organizations to help place pets that need a little more attention. I enjoy visiting this shelter very much.

    by: sylvie2

My sister is one of the volunteers involved with this shelter. She and her cohorts have worked miracles in spite of the terribly low funding they've had available. Paula, the head of the shelter is a hero (and I use that term very infrequently) with the amount of sacrifice and hard work she has faced with very little thanks or cash. To go from such a high kill rate to such a drastic decrease is almost superhuman. \r\nI use that phrase punching a lattern in the darkness because of a church sermon I heard recently. If as individuals we took action and just didn't give up because of the immensity of cruelty and injustice in the world, we would see a positive change more quickly than you would think possible.\r\nPaula, Betsy and the rest of the volunteers are doing something to change the world and besides helping animals are an inspiration to others like myself.

Paula and Vada truly have the animal's best interests at heart and make every effort to enhance the lives of the animals that find their way to the small facility. The EAS is pro-active in the community and has established some great outreach programs, uncluding their incredibly successful volunteer program. I am blessed to volunteer with such an incredible group of people and, of course, animals!

    by: auomoto

Ellensburg is a small community and it's hard to get the support that more population more affulent areas get. We have fought hard to improve the shelter to the best it can be for it's resources. Ellensburg is becoming a bedroom community to the Seattle area so growth is happening quickly and we need a more regionalized shelter. The area it serves goes from the Columbia River to the top of Snoqualmie Pass. So much more could be done if you could only win this makeover.

    by: funkiemunkee

She also complains to me (I work for the city) about how understaffed they are, and how the facility needs updating and more room. It is unfortunate, but they are making the best with what they have to work with. The animals are receiving top quality care from staff and volunteers, and that is what matters most.

    Pros

    Wonderful volunteer staff

    Cons

small facility and not enough staff!

    by: Jumbo

I have known the City of Ellensburg Animal Shelter staff for many years, and have had to take many stray or abandoned animals there as a part of my job. Even in the middle of the night when dropping an animal off, the facility is clean and there is a safe place for the animal.\n I have also adopted all but one pet I've ever owned from the shelter. Every dog or cat has come home in good health, showing the obvious effects of the outstanding care it received in the shelter. I

    by: strevys

The people who work here are truly amazing they do such a good job and work so hard. They take animals home with them all the time for foster care. Rarely have to Euthanize any animals which is awesome and work with other animal shelters in the state to get these poor animals to good homes. They are great bunch of people and desrve some serious kudos.

    Pros

    Great People who care

    Cons

    Need to site

  • 119. Really Deserve this makeover

    by: rlga

This shelter help me take care of an overload of discarded cats. They loaned me a humane trap to catch many cats that were discarded and no longer wanted. This trap helped me catch a mom and her 7 babies. All 7 babies found and mom found wonderful homes thanks to the wonderful staff here in Ellensburg Wa.

    Pros

They love their animals, work with them daily and are great with customers

    Cons

The shelter is small, can only hold so many animals

The Ellensburg Animal Shelter is a necessity in this city. The staff (and volunteers) are committed and have a vision for the future. The improvements that have been made over the past few years are astounding. With the reduced euthaniasia rate, the exceptional volunteer program, and the partnerships with local rescue groups, this shelter has come a long way. Unfortunately, the shelter is understaffed and underfunded. They are taking on the burden of animals from all over the county. Staff and volunteers work tirelessly to educate the public on the pet overpopulation crisis. Volunteers are fostering animals when there is no room at the shelter, transporting them to rescue groups across the state, and socializing them so they are fit for a permanent home. Despite the limited funds and full-time staff members, the dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, and even the occassional reptile ALL receive the the attention they need and deserve. This shelter deserves more.

    Pros

Committed and goal-oriented staff and volunteers

    Cons

    Understaffed

  • 121. Great Shelter...Needs Funds

    by: maizyday

Exceptional shelter with wonderful, loving staff. Shelter is neat, clean, and they are knowledgable and care well for the animals. Lack of funds to upgrade the facility means they have no isolation area, no quarantine area, open sewer drains, only 16 dog kennels, 14 cat cages, no public restroom, and extremely cramped quarters etc. Yet, they do the best with what they have, and never make excuses. \r\n\r\n \r\n

    Pros

Does fabulous with what it has

    Cons

    Underfunded

  • 122. Awesome Shelter

  • 126. Wonderful people

    by: Riverwaif

While we all wish there was no need for this type of service, there ia a tremendous need and probably will be for all time.\r\nThis shelter does the job that nobody else wants to do, placing and caring for unwanted pets and yes euthanasia is sometimes a part of that.\r\nIn a difficult and underfunded position the staff here do an excellent job. Lets do our part in helping them out.

    Pros

    Staff are very caring people.

    Cons

    Not enough room.

  • 127. They deserve it!

    by: brunkd

This is a great animal shelter that deserves a makeover! The staff is great and so are the volunteers! The animals are lucky to have them!

    Pros

Great staff that loves the animals!

    Cons

They need a bigger facility to care for all of the animals

  • 128. College students piece of home

    by: lamastusa

EAS is a staple for the Central Washington Students that find themselves missing their pets between the holidays - and the EAS staff is more than willing to help fill that void. They are very welcoming of student volunteers and even participate in various activities on campus to encourage more students, and staff, to stop by and see what they have to offer. Unfortunatly, due to low budgets, EAS is working with very little, and aren't able to provide a haven for the animals. Donations go a long way in helping out.

    Pros

    Friendly staff

    Cons

    Small facilities.

  • 129. Terrific staff, amazing results

    by: audine

The dedication and caring of the individuals who make up the staff at the Ellensburg Shelter have made a huge positive difference in the lives of the animals that pass through their doors. Many years ago, twenty or so, I volunteered at the Ellensburg Shelter. If there were other volunteers at that time, they were few and far between. And, for many of the dogs and cats that I spent time with, I knew that their tomorrows were very limited. Fortunately, however, times and attitudes allow for change. Now, volunteers are a common sight, supplementing the staff's efforts to provide good living conditions and futures for the dogs, cats and various other small animals that arrive at the shelter. Paula and her staff have worked hard to bring about these changes. It is impressive to see the difference they have made within the confines of their budget.

    Pros

    Very caring staff

    Cons

Facility is in need of expansion

  • 130. What a Shelter!

    by: cclasen

I could not think of a shelter more deserving than the EAS for winning a makeover. The EAS staff has done an incredible job of caring for the animals in the small space they have.

    Pros

Caring and knowledgable staff, VERY clean

    Cons

    SMALL

  • 131. Thumbs up!

    by: hazardous1

I am very greatful for the Ellensburg animal shelter. I have adopted a kitty from there who gave me many years of joy. I have multiple family members that have also adopted from the shelter & they have also been pleased with their pets & the staff that assisted them in placing a pet with them. However I think with more funding & resources the shelter could be even better....

    Pros

The staff is really friendly & helpful

    Cons

Resource are lacking for it to reach its full potential

  • 132. Please help us!

    by: cwualexa

I love the Ellensburg Animal Shelter. I have been volunteering here for over a year and I am joyful every time I come in. The animals are great and the staff is so friendly. We could really use the makeover! We definitely could use more room and nicer facilities to accomodate our animals. Ellensburg is a small town, but we see A LOT of pets come through here and really need some help!

    Pros

very friendly staff, great animals that come in and don't always find homes!

    Cons

Small, not enough room for admissions, no public restroom, no meeting room

  • 133. They do an AMAZING Job!

    by: marigaines

The staff and volunteers at the EAS deserve so much credit for doing an extremely hard yet so vital job. They have been the difference in the lives of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of animals that have passed through their doors. How they remain civil and patient with many of the people they have to deal with - not to mention sane after the heart breaking tasks they sometimes face - is nothing short of miraculous. And all of this great work is done in a facility that is too small, under staffed and without many of the features that are considered important to the operation of a shelter.

    Pros

    Caring, knowledgeable, resourceful

    Cons

limited resources, not a lot of political support

  • 134. They really care

    by: stasya13

I adopted a dog from here and they were very upfront with everything I needed to do. They didn't tell me some things only for me to come back and find out I had to do more. I was able to adopt my dog with in days of my first visit. That was 2 years ago and he is the most perfect dog I could have adopted.

    Pros

They give you complete information about whatever you need to know. They help you get the animal that works for you.

    Cons

    Small space

  • 135. Every bit of it is true!

    by: Thistle

I began volunteering at the shelter when the Euthanasia rate was 70% and the volunteer program was not yet established. You could literally count us all on one hand. Since then the shelter has had as many as 40 volunteers putting in over 400 hours a month to keep the shelter area clean and the animals socialized, exercised and above all...loved. We have all laughed and cried with and for the animals that have come through and those that the shelter was their last home. \r\n\r\nThe shelter is too small, the sewer system is inefficient, the winter months are cold because we have no inside viewing areas and consequently have to leave the kennels open to the elements so people can see the dogs and actually have a chance to be adopted. There is no place to put the sick ones so the risk all of the animals getting sick is huge. Guinea pigs and birds are placed in cages on the floor or on top of the cat cages because there isn't any other place to put them-can you imagine the horror that must lay in the heart of every bird that's been there? \r\n\r\nThe shelter is on the lowest inch of the Totem Pole in the city's budget. The chances of getting any remodeling, upgrades, much less a needed expansion is a big fat ZERO! What Paula, her staff, the faithful volunteers, volunteer groups, and the indispensible rescue groups that have worked with the shelter, have done with the little that the shelter has, has been more than amazing. \r\n\r\nThe shelter needs the make-over badly. Our community is growing by leaps and bounds and it is the only shelter in the county.\r\n\r\n

    Pros

    Caring, compassionate staff, clean, ethical

    Cons

    cramped, not enough room anywhere

  • 136. Good work staff!!!

    Pros

    Cons
