  • 1. great service

    by: lablover87

I had a great experience at the Bloomington Animal Shelter. I went in looking for a small, calm, and kinda of lazy dog. I did not find that when I went there but I did find an adorable black lab puppy that I instantly fell in love with. The staff was very helpful with me getting to know Bella. They took us out to the yard so we play together and then sat down with me to make sure that we were a good match. They made sure that I knew what to expect getting a larger high energy dog. They made sure that I was educated on the proper heart worm medications to get and told me lots of tips on training. I now have the cutest, most loving dog I could have ever hoped for. I thank all the staff members at the shelter that made it possible for me to have Bella.

    Pros

    Cons

    by: odonturtle

This shelter is the best. We went to a lot of shelters looking for just the right pet. Not only did I find him last year at Christmas but they do a super job of supplying you with materials, information, microchips, and follow ups. It doesn't get any better than this! We are one happy family for life!

    Pros

    Friendly, obviously love their animals

    Cons

  • 3. Proud to call it my local shelter

    by: vegankid

While it is not the perfect shelter, I feel like they are working to get there and are sincere in their efforts to protect and save animals. It has been great getting familiar with their work and I really look forward to working with MCHA on programs to help stop the overpopulation and abuse of companion animals.\n\nAlso, my dog, Tidbit, came from this shelter. It was nice to see that they gave an older dog with some aggression issues a chance to survive. She was six when I adopted her and would posture and attack other animals. She now gets along with all the other critters at the sanctuary and has become a favorite friend among the cats - especially the feral kitten that showed up. \n\nI think Sarah Hayes, the volunteers and others are making this one of the best shelters in the country. I can't wait to see where they are at in the near future.

  • 7. Our Kitty is from the B-town Shelter

    by: PlanoCJ

Our kitten picked us out in 1997 when we stopped by the Bloomington Animal Shelter. After our daughter left for college and even before then our cat became VERY attached to us. She is very much a part of our family. She sleeps with us every night and sleeps slap in the middle on stormy nights. :o)\n\nIf we ever pass thru Bloomington again I would not hesitate to return there if I was pet looking.\n\nCJ

    Pros

They were great when we came looking at the kittens. Very knowledgeable about the kitty who picked us.

The Bloomington Animal Shelter is full of wonderful people who truly care about animal welfare. Given all the resources they needed, Monroe County wouldn't have a pet-overpopulation problem or need to euthanize unwanted animals. Thank you for your hardwork!

    by: fornal

We recently adopted a puppy from the Bloomington Animal Shelter. We visited several shelters in the area, and the staff and volunteers here were by far the most knowledgable and caring. They took the time to answer all our questions, and were clearly interesed in finding the best home they could for all their animals. Kudos to everyone affiliated with this organization.

    Great Staff, clean facility

    Cons

  • 29. Wonderful Place to Link Pets and People

    by: ebusey

All three of our cats have come from this shelter. Two came home very healthy -- the other came home with a cold (we knew about this at the time.) All are now healthy, charming members of the family. The shelter even calls to follow-up after each adoption.\n\nShelter employees and volunteers create a warm, clean atmosphere. They cleverly "market" the animals, and give people lots of time to get to know their prospective pet.\n\nHighly recommended.

    Pros

Bright, clean places for pets, especially cats.

    Cons

They need more room for dogs!

We found our cat in the backyard, and brought her to the shelter. They were extremely helpful and found out who her owner was and tried to contact them. After determining that she was abandoned, they helped us adopt her. It was really great to see how nice everyone was to her while she stayed there and how happy they were to help us adopt her.

I started volunteering at this shelter in June of 2007, and the first month I worked there, I brought home 2 cats. I still volunteer there, and I work with the cats, so it's like I have a whole other set of pets at the shelter. All the staff and volunteers really care about the animals, and we all love to see one get a home. Everyone is nice and wonderful and the animals are well cared for. If you're thinking of getting a new pet, please adopt. They are so grateful and caring and just as wonderful as pure-breds!

  • 32. Truly Love Animals

    by: stace23

I love the Bloomington Animal Shelter. We've adopted two dogs from there, and I've been a volunteer there since October, 2007. The staff keeps extremely busy, but they always take the time out to help people who are looking for a new pet, need advice, etc. The people who work there seem to have a deep passion for animals. I have never seen a staff member upset or frustrated with an animal. Rather, I always hear them talking sweetly to the animals and offering a nice scratch behind the ears.

    Pros

    Deep passion for animals

    Cons

    Busy, busy staff

  • 33. Great!

    by: nichelli21

I adopted a puppy from the shelter over the weekend. The entire process was so easy. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful. During the adoption interview process, the staff member gave many helpful suggestions on how to start raising the puppy. This definitely helped reinforce everything I had been reading about.\r\n\r\nI started out my search for a dog on petfinder.com. The Bloomington Animal Shelter was great about keeping their pets up to date on the site. There was a puppy that was adopted the day I went in to look, and the next day he was off the site.

    Pros

    weekend hours

    Cons

    cats in the entry

  • 34. A fabulous place to adopt a new pet

    Cons

  • 35. Helpful!

    by: katiellee

The staff was fantastic. My first dog had some socialization issues, so the shelter really worked with us to find a second dog that would fit well with our family. They also provided support as we worked through chewing phases, dominance challenges and the like.

    Pros

Location... recycle while you pick up your new dog!

    Cons

You want to take everyone home.

  • 36. Extremely Helpful and Friendly

    by: mgrowdon

The Bloomington animal shelter is amazing. The staff is always friendly and very responsive. They want to make sure that you are a good fit for the animal you just fell in love with. They are very accommodating about letting prospective adopters be with the animals, and introduce them to other animals. They do everything in their power to make sure you and your new friend are comfortable and well-matched.

    Pros

    convenient hours

    Cons

they only have a selected quantity of animals for viewing

  • 38. Great shelter with caring staff

    by: lizard1180

I adopted two cats from here and also volunteered at the shelter for over a year. When I adopted, it was clear the staff was knowledgeable about animals in general and my chosen pets specifically (they knew the backstories of how each cat came to the shelter). When I volunteered, I saw how compassionate the staff was to the animals and how well they cared for them. It certainly can get crowded though, and I am sure the shelter could use more space. Also, while parts of the shelter were renovated at some point, I believe other parts could stand to be renovated.

    Pros

    Friendly staff, animals treated well

    Cons

    Need more space!

  • 39. Shelter is great, safe, and wonderful!

    by: Merk

A cat ran into my apartment the other day with a tag on its collar. His/her name was Raffi. I tried calling the owner but either the number on the collar was no longer available or the owner was trying to get rid of the poor kitty. I took care of the cat for a day but decided I could no longer take care of it, I took it to the Bloomington Humane shelter and they listened to my story and took poor Raffi in. They were very nice and assured me that Raffi would find a good home. Kudos to you Bloomington humane shelter!

    Pros

Great customer service, safe, lots of cute animals

    Cons

I can't adopt all the puppies!

  • 40. Knowledgeable, understanding, and compassionate

    by: MegRose

I went here when I was considering getting a dog. The staff sits down with you and discusses everything that goes into having a dog. I then went in the back and talked with the staff about the different dogs that I was interested in. The staff was very knowledgeable about breeds and what to expect with the different breeds. I didn't end up getting a dog because it was just not the right time for me yet. But I know when I am ready to get a dog it will be at the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter/Monroe County Humane Association. This shelter was much better than other shelters because of the staff working there. I wish they could get the makeover so that they would have better facilities for all the animals there. They definitely do well with what they have so it would be a nice reward to get the makeover.

    Pros

Honest and knowledgeable staff helps find the perfect dog for people.

    Cons

I wish they had more space to bring out more dogs for the public to see.

  • 41. I love the shelter

  • 42. Best Shelter I've dealt with so far...

    by: jstrei1

We've now adopted 3 cats from the Bloomington Shelter: one was 3 years old, another a year old, and the third was 3 months old when we got her. Each experience with them has been positive. One of the cats had a little cold a few days after we brought her home, but the vet allowed the "free visit" that comes with the adoption fee to cover her check up for the cold and the medication.\r\n\r\nThe perks associated with free microchipping and the free vet visit anywhere in town are fantastic. \r\n\r\nThe shelter we got our first cat from in Maryland made us wait 48 hours for the application to be processed and allowed up to 2 other applicants per animal in that time so Puma was actually the fourth cat we applied for because they kept calling with sob stories regarding the other people who wanted the cats we had applied for. We adore Puma, so we're glad it worked out this way, but it was a devastating two week process. Not only has this NEVER happened at the Bloomington shelter, but we took Zoey home within an hour of applying for her last summer. I also love that Bloomington brings the animals out each Saturday at the farmers market - that certainly helped influence our decision to go in and get Bruce and Zoey (both 4th of July weekend adoptions!)

    Pros

Very nice, quick, service. Plenty of places to grab a moment to bond with a cat before adopting

    Cons

So many cats it's hard to choose...is that really a con though?

  • 43. Shelter Makeover

    by: elalonde

I’ve been volunteering at the Bloomington Animal Shelter for a year, and the new area is very nice, but the stray side needs some improvement. I started at the shelter as a dog walker for the stray dogs, and it was a little dingy, so I really hope people will help out with the shelter makeover!

    Pros

    Knowledgeable and very helpful

    Cons

Stray area is a little dark and dingy

I have adopted both my dogs and my two cats from the Bloomington Animal Shelter. They have all been fantastic animals! The shelter workers were so friendly and helpful and took great care in ensuring the animals were going to a good home. Thanks to Bloomington Animal Shelter and Monroe Co Humane Society for striving to provide a loving community for God's critters.

    Pros

    Clean, helpful staff

    Cons

That humans neglect and abuse animals.

  • 46. Great caring shelter

    by: Pughouse

This is a wonderful shelter where the animals are treated as individuals; loved and cared for by the staff and volunteers. A lot of effort is put into community involvement and adoption. The shelter works hard to send animals into foster care when needed, and transports dogs to other shelters and breed rescues regularly. The MCHA supports the shelter in lots of ways and is great at fundraisers and pushing spay/neuter in the community.

    Pros

    great volunterrs and staff

    Cons

need more staff and room, location

  • 47. Best Dog I ever had came from here...

    by: vmetzger

Years ago the MCHA operated the shelter but after a somewhat unsuccessful capital campaign the city of Bloomington bailed out the campaign and took over the construction and operation of the expanded shelter. Some of the MCHA staff now work for the city and the two organizations work very well together. An example of government and no-for-profit working well together.

    Pros

    Cons

    not everyone understands the relationship

  • 59. Great people working hard

    by: hahna

This shelter has made some amazing progress over the last 10 years. Now the animals that are adopted are already spayed/neutered, they are microchipped and up on their shots. The cats have a nice colony that some live in as well as individual cages for others. They have worked so hard to improve things but they need more support to take care of all the animals they have.

    Pros

    They love the animals

    Cons

    Too many animals

  • 60. Wonderful place with wonderful staff

    by: woodsus

We adopted our cat from the shelter 1 1/2 years ago. He was already neutered, micro chipped and up to date on shots as a kitten. I love the changes they have made in the last several years to try harder to address the over population problems. Keep up the good work.

    Pros

Some incredibly caring people work here

    Cons

They need more support from the community

  • 61. The Greatest Shelter!

    by: csweet

They have initiated many new programs to encourage the spaying and neutering of pets and adoption of existing pets. They have improved their outreach in the community but still have far too many animals that have to be euthanized because of space considerations.

    Pros

    Caring staff, good programs

    Cons

    Still too many unwanted pets

  • 63. Amazing Place

  • 64. Fast and Friendly Adoption Process!!!

    by: Rch4u693

One day I was reading the local Bloomington newspaper and I saw this adorable black kitten was waiting for adoption. I has a black cat a few years ago that passes away due to cancer. So when I saw Geranium I instantly feel in love with her loving and hopeful eyes. I waiting a couple weeks to call and inquire about her adoption status. When I was told that she was still waiting for a forever home I knew that she was waiting for me!!! That week I filled out the adoption paperwork and picked her up that Friday. I never even met her but I knew she would be my best friend for the rest of our lives. When I arrived to the Bloomington Shelter I could not believe how attached and loving they were to her. I was reassured that she had a good home and environment when I picked her up. Geranium is one of the best decisions I made and I will always support the Bloomingon Shelter for future companions and referrals!!!

    Pros

Fast and friendly adoption service and great adoption price!!!

    Cons

  • 65. A great place to get involved!

    by: gkneelady

I just moved to Bloomington a year & 1/2 ago, and the first thing I did was start researching places to volunteer. I was really impressed with the shelter, as it was clean, the staff were very helpful, and the animals are well cared for. I am excited to say that I have just completed volunteering for their Holiday Pet Food Drive, and had a ball!

    Pros

Great staff, lots of opportunities to get involved, really good job with community outreach

    Cons

    Can't think of any!

  • 66. Great place to adopt a new family member

    by: sdelone

What a great place to get your next furry family member! The Bloomington shelter always has plenty of lovable animal friends just begging for a new home. Best of all they all go home already spayed or neutered and with their first round of vaccinations. Dogs are tested for heartworm, and cats are tested for FIV and feline leukemia. They even come with a microchip!\r\n\r\nSome of the shelter animals have gone on to become registered Pet Partners therapy animals with the MCHA VIPaws program. \r\n\r\nAnimals are tested and screened and then the shelter is quite careful to help match you with an animal that will suit your family and your lifestyle.\r\n\r\nNot sure you want to adopt just yet? Why not considering becoming part of the foster guardian program and keeping a shelter animal or two until they find their forever home?

    Pros

wonderful animals, wonderful staff and volunteers, great foster program

    Cons

too many animals coming in the door

  • 71. It's A Great Facility

    by: jmtrotter

I realize they are very busy and short handed at times, but it would be nice to at least be acknowledged when you enter the building. I volunteer for MCHA as well as the Shelter. My husband and I pick up food for the Food Drive.\nI just started helping at the shelter walking the dogs and will be attending the training class in February to volunteer as an Adoption Counselor. The staff is very nice, but it doesn't always shine through. I do enjoy spending time with the animals and the staff is aways willing to help answer any questions I may have. I would like to see the feces cleaned up more than twice a day from the dogs sleeping area. They all have one goal and that is to find a permanent loving home for all that dwell at the shelter.\n

    Pros

The staff truly cares about the animals.

    Cons

The wait to be acknowledged is lengthy when you enter the building.

  • 72. If you want a pet, go here first!

    by: Sockschan

I just adopted my kitten Schrodinger from the Bloomington Animal Shelter today. They really cover all the bases: she's got almost all her shots, and the one she doesn't have I can get for free from any vet in town; she's spayed already; and best of all she's microchipped, in case she gets out - so far, she seems like the type to want to run around and explore, so it's possible!\n\nThey were friendly, knowledgeable, and just all around great!

    Pros

    So friendly!

    Cons

need an easier to see sign

  • 73. A Great Animal Shelter

    by: kyockey

The Bloomington Animal Shelter is one of the nicest shelters I have seen. They have a great staff that cares deeply for all the animals. They have large kennels for the dogs and a great cat colony for the kitties. The shelter is always very clean with the help of their many volunteers. They do a really great job with the animals and with educating the community regarding pet ownership, spay/neuter, etc. The Bloomington Animal Shelter is super. I wish more shelters were like it.

    Pros

    Friendly, knowledgeable staff

    Cons

    Quickly outgrowing their space

  • 74. My Shelter...Bloomington Indiana

    by: londerga

The Bloomington City Animal Shelter runs efficiently and provides animals respite from their travails as they find new homes. The staff are wonderful... knowledgable, friendly and best of all...they have the needs of the wide variety of animals that come throught their doors as their top priority. They work with rescue groups to assist in placing dogs. \r\n\r\nThe work the staff does is difficult and often very sad. But everyone remains positive and dedicated to serving the animals in the best way possible. \r\n\r\nI have four dogs. They are all rescue mixed-breeds. But each one is a unique personality and a delight to me. Our little tribe is just the best.

    Pros

    Cons

    Overcrowding from time to time

  • 76. Wonderful Shelter

    by: knwood

I have worked here as a volunteer, and recently did a pre-vet internship here. I've been as behind the scenes as you can get, and I still love this place (which is saying a lot for me, because I often start to loathe organizations after I get very involved)! The animals are treated sooooo well! The staff is wonderful and so are the administrators and most of the volunteers. Here's a cool story... I fostered a semi-ferral cat and her two kittens this spring. After the kittens became independent, she went nuts, and hurt me and my dog pretty badly. I didn't report her outburst to the shelter right away, thinking I'd give her another chance, but she continued to have outbursts that I couldn't control and she was terrorizing my smallest dog and making him bleed consistently. I told the shelter and took her back to them once the kittens were weaned. I felt bad b/c I thought I could rehabilitate her, but the shelter staff assured me its almost impossible to domesticate a ferral cats, and that I should turn my attention to the kittens. My little babies were so little and cute, and I worked hard to socialize them and teach them as a good mother cat would. When they were chubby and old enough to be fixed I took them back to the shelter to be altered and adopted. It was a great experience and I thought that once they were adopted that was the end of the story, but a few days ago, my fiance called to tell me that one of his students told him about his cat named Gizmo(which was the name I gave one of the kittens). When the child was picked up, my fiance when to the car to see the cat, and low and behold, it was one of my fosters, in a loving home! What could be more delightful?

    Pros

good staff, high survival rates, great administration

    Cons

    shelter needs a makeover!

  • 77. Great Place to Find a Pet!

    by: kaciejo

We adopted our lab mix dog Kinnick from the Bloomington Animal Shelter. The staff was all very nice, and Kinnick was well cared for. They really want you to make a choice that works for your family, and they follow up with you to make sure that the adoption is successful. They offer a free animal behavior consultant if there are any problems.

    Pros

Very clean, helpful staff, great animals to adopt!

    Cons

    none!

  • 78. They gave us a new best friend

    by: knthays

We came to the shelter one week after our 8-year-old diabetic cat, named Tiger, died. We tried everything possible to save Tiger, but we're unsuccessful. We hurt so bad from our loss. I saw a picture of a beautiful 4-year old male cat on one of the shelter's posters in Kroger. I wrote down the website, went home and looked him up. We decided that since we couldn't save Tiger, we would save another adult cat to honor Tiger's life. The shelter was very helpful. We met Sampson and decided immediately to offer him a place in our home and our hearts. We filled out an application and we're able to take him home the same day. Things, however, were not very smooth at home. Sampson was overly aggressive. He would petition for affection, then bite or claw you when he was done. The shelter was there to help us with this problem. We tried their suggestions and they worked. Sampson has been with us for almost a year now and he is a loving, wonderful family member. Thank you so much for bringing us together.

    Pros

Very helpful before, during and after the adoption.

    Cons

    none

  • 79. Excellent resource!

    by: abortner

We are currently looking to add another member to our family, and although we have not found him/her yet, the staff at Monroe County has been nothing but helpful. The facility is kept in excellent order, and their local access television information is also very helpful. This is an excellent organization that has wonderful community outreach and I have heard nothing but wonderful things from everyone I know that has worked with them. An excellent resource for finding a new friend, pet questions, and place to volunteer!

    by: WickedPineapple

I adopted two kittens from this shelter. I had never had a cat before and the staff was very helpful in explaining how to care for them. They are both healthy and active. Any problems I've had the staff have helped me solve. I plan to get a dog from them as well sometime in the future.

    Pros

amazing staff, healthy animals, clean environment

    Cons

  • 82. The foster program- great for grad students!

    by: MaryCamozzi

I've recently joined the foster program at our shelter and have had a great time with it. As a graduate student who is going to be traveling a lot, I can't have pets of my own right now. I've fostered one litter of kittens and look forward to taking another litter after the holidays. This is a great way to relieve crowding at the shelter, socialize young future pets, and enjoy a (potentially) endless stream of kitten goodness into your home. Dr. Jo Liska and the shelter staff have been extremely helpful and knowledgeable about all aspects of kitten/mom cat care.

    Pros

    Easy to get involved, kittens!

    Cons

    Temporary, risk of attachment

  • 85. I LOVE my shelter puppy!!!!!

    by: saestewa

I got my dog, Cooper, from the Bloomington Animal Shelter (BAS) about year and a half ago, and I couldn't have asked for a better dog!! The staff at this shelter is so compassionate about their animals, so much so that you really feel like they love and care about EVERY animal that comes through their door. They are extremely knowledgeable about animals and animal care, and take the time to answer any questions you have before you adopt. Again, I love this shelter!

    Pros

Knowledgeable Staff, Great Animals, I Love this shelter!

    Cons

  • 86. Staff makes shelter a great place.

    by: JamesHaverstock

Lauri Ringquist and the staff make this a special place, given what they see and have to deal with every day. No matter the problem (or crisis) they step up to deal with it. Money would make our shelter better, no doubt. The commitment of our staff cannot be purchased, however, no matter the price. Hats off to them!

    Pros

    Caring, professional staff.

    Cons

    Area clientel that neglects pets.

  • 87. Best place to find your new best friend

    by: kptaylor

My daughter has gone to the shelter for informational classes on all kinds of animals. They allow children as young as 13 to volunteer with an adult. They organize an outreach program called Pet's Alive to bring adoptable animals out into the community to be seen and touched. They also showcase adoptable pets on our local public tv station and have a website

    Pros

Always someone to help you and attentive to animals needs

    Cons

kennels where the dogs have the abilbity to go in and out are made of cement and are very cold and drafty

  • 88. Thanks from Christy, Zeke and Frida!

    by: ccampoll

Both of my kitties came to me from this shelter. Zeke in 1999 and Frida just a few months ago. I wasn't there for Zeke's adoption, but I'm thrilled that he ended up in my life after the shelter rescued him when he was found as a tiny kitten out alone in the rain! I adopted Frida this fall. She is 1 or 2 years old. I don't know her story, but I am tickled to have her as my companion. She is super playful, loves toys and keeps Zeke on his toes as he enters his older-kitty years. I don't know a lot about the shelter, but I am impressed with their staff (particularly their manager and animal behaviorist), and am grateful that homeless companion animals have a place to stay when they need it.

    Pros

cats get to socialize in colonies; visitors get to linger as long as they like

    Cons

  • 90. Such a great shelter!

    by: cassilicious

I haven't adopted from there myself (our dog was a rescue after being dumped at a family member's house with injuries from being hit by a car). But I went through the adoption process with my roommate in college. All the staff and volunteers were amazingly helpful and knowledgeable. Everyone there truly loves animals. The facility was beautiful and makes you feel remarkably welcome. The MCHA is doing such great things for Bloomington and the county, and it makes me proud to be a resident of such a pet-friendly area of the country. \n\nI've also relinqushed a stray cat at the shelter. From the moment I stepped in the doors they were so very appreciative that I took the initive to bring the cat in and rescue it. They were remarkably caring and loving, even to a stranger cat. It made me feel completely comfortable leaving the poor kitty in their care. \n\nPlease, if you are looking to adopt a pet in the Central Indiana area, check with MCHA first. You won't be sorry.

    Pros

    Everything!

    Cons

    Nothing!

  • 91. I have visited friends in Bloomington and went to the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter. The staff was helpful and the animals were wonderful. I wish I could have taken them all but my lab-pug puppy is taking most of my time right now.

    Cons

  • 92. I found Cody here

    by: skrubs

This is the greatest shelter I have seen. The staff is dedicated and clearly love the animals in their charge. I found Cody at this shelter as a puppy and he was so well taken care of while there.\nThey have shows on the public access channel all the time showing the animals currently residing at the shelter and I understand that they are part of the pet train that will take animals to communities that are looking for more animal in other parts of the country.\nExcellent place.

    Pros

I found my favorite dog at this shelter

    Cons

  • 93. without a doubt, a great place to adopt!

    by: stormyknight

I have adopted all FIVE of my companion animals from the Bloomington Animal Shelter and I could not be happier. I have been involved with the shelter for more than two years and the place just keeps getting better. The resources available for adopters during and after the adoption are excellent - the staff is very knowledgeable in helping you select an animal and Dr. Jo Liska, the animal behaviorist, is available to help solve any behavior problems that may crop up in the new owner's home. The animals are happy and well-cared for, which makes for a great adoption experience. I would highly recommend that anyone looking for a new pet go to this shelter to find him or her - you won't regret it!

    Pros

    staff, selection of animals, resources

    Cons

part of the facility needs a makeover!

  • 95. Really care about the animals

    by: gedoena

I volunteer as an adoption councilor at this shelter. Since I began volunteering I have been really impressed at how well the shelter staff tries to take into account the animals' needs. \n\nThe shelter encourages people to come in and meet and greet all the animals, and to bring their whole family (including other dogs) in to meet animals they are planning to adopt.\n\nIt is a great place to volunteer - they are very flexible about schedules and encourage us to interact with the animals as much as possible. The staff and other volunteers are all great.

    Pros

personalized care for animals, animals very accesible for visitors to meet them

    Cons

when it is busy the phone lines can get neglected so come in to see the animals!

  • 96. Great deserving shelter

    by: annejose

Anyone who's ever visited the Bloomington animal shelter will agree that it not only has a nice facility, but also (above all) staff that actually cares about the animals and tries to do everything in its power to increase animal welfare. They definitely deserve more funding and help from the general public, which would allow them to help more animals by hiring more staff, better preventing animal cruelty, raising awareness about the importance of spay/neuter, etc. \n\nIf anyone is on Facebook, please join " Friends of the Bloomington Animal Shelter" group at:\nhttp://indiana.facebook.com/group.php?gid=20730990352

    Pros

    Caring staff, nice facility

    Cons

Not enough funding to help more animals

  • 97. Caring, Compassionate...The Best Shelter in Indiana

    by: eknudson

I love the Bloomington Animal Shelter. I've adopted two of my dog companions from the shelter, and am a volunteer adoption counselor there. The staff is dedicated and knowledgable, and they have a beautiful facility and high standards for humane care of the animals. As an advocate of pit bulls, I also appreciate the fact that they give this breed a chance and don't reject or euthanize them out of hand like so many shelters do.

    Pros

Caring staff, beautiful facility, great volunteers

    Cons

Because of realities of south central Indiana, they get more animals than they can ever hope to find homes for; we need more spay/neuter awareness among the general public.
