  • 1. Get Your Kitties At Cat Welfare!!!

    by: DominoLove

Working at Cat Welfare has brought a sense of purpose into my life. I feel like a hero every single day that I can make life better for a cat, one by one. Cat Welfare is the purrfect place to get a cat. Who would know better than I? (3 from CWA at the moment) The cats are super socialized, up-to-date on all their shots, and most of all, deserve a loving home. They have it pretty good at CWA; plenty of warm beds, colorful toys, and people every single day to give them love. But each and every one of them deserve a 'forever home'.\nEven if your household can't support another furry baby, you have to admire the other programs CWA is involved with, like our low-cost spay and neuter program that takes in strays and pets alike. Cat Welfare makes animals its number one priority on all levels; not just finding homes for strays, but controlling the feral population, and helping pet owners become more responsible and knowledgeable about pet ownership.\nMy three CWA cats are the best animals in the world. I wouldn't trade them for anything. A big THANK YOU to Cat Welfare for caring about the strays of the world.

    Pros

Staff that love and know cats

    Cons

    Overcrowded

  • 2. Outstanding volunteership at Cat Welfare

    by: shebagrl

As part of my college scholarship, I had to volunteer 30 hours per semester. Given how much I love animals and appreciate no-kill shelters, Cat Welfare was a natural choice. The time I spent there as a volunteer was humbling and educational, albeit challenging and, at times, heartbreaking.\n\nCaring for hundreds of cats is such a challenge, but those who work and volunteer at Cat Welfare rise to the occasion every day. Not only do they provide a happy, healthy environment for ALL cats, whether babies or seniors, friendly or afraid, cuddly or ailing, they take on emergency cases without batting an eye. One instance I recall in particular was that of a black cat trapped in a bear trap (yes, they are illegal). Cat Welfare got the call and drove into the country outside of Columbus to pick up the injured animal, brought him back to safety, and had to amputate his leg to save his life. All of this done by a cat shelter running off of donations and the meager earnings from adoptions and their very popular garage sales.\n\nWithout a shadow of a doubt, it was one of the best life experiences I've ever had and helping the kitties was amazing, too. Most of all, it was seeing the dedication and selflessness of all who work for, volunteer with, and patronize Columbus's beloved Cat Welfare that made me proud to be part of such a fantastic organization. Please help this legacy continue for all of us.

    Pros

Amazing staff, no-kill shelter, great volunteers, lots of wonderful kitties to choose from.

    Cons

Hours -- check the website before you go to make sure they are open before you head over!

  • 3. Need more elbow room!!!

    by: pbranham

Cat welfare is one of the best rescue organizations I have known. They desparately need more space.j\r\nThe people are capable, loving and concerned, and need more space to keep a neater, cleaner facility that would house more cats in need of homes. Currently they are at capacity and there is such a need in Franklin County. Last year alone the Humane Society put down 8000 cats.\r\n\r\nCat Welfare has also stepped up to the plate with the feral population. I helped with their Christmas fund raisers, all of the money going to the spay-neuter drives they have been having this year for low cost spay/neuter for domesticated cats and free for ferals.\r\n\r\nPlease consider this cause.\r\n\r\nThanks.\r\n\r\n Penny Branham

    Pros

    Wonderful people and cats

    Cons

    Present building to small.

  • 4. Amazing People-Amazing Shelter

    by: darcyj1203

Cat Welfare in Columbus, OH is staffed and ran by some of the most giving and caring people that I have ever met. They love what they do and it shows. Some shelter owners/workers get jaded over time and tend not to care about the animals after many years. The staff at Cat Welfare is the complete opposite. The longer they are there, the more caring and determined they are to find homes or make a home at the shelter for every animal possible.

    Pros

    Loving, knowledgeable staff

    Cons

    Too many cats without homes

  • 5. Sounds like a lovely shelter!!

  • 6. Best shelter in Columbus, Ohio

    by: ztT4MP45717079_DEAD

The staff at Cat Welfare is very hard working and they really take care of the very picky clientelle! I never see the staff sitting down! The shelter itself is cleaned every day as well as all of the cages. And, once a month they clean EVERYTHING from top to bottom. I have never seen anything like it. I keep trying to get them to come to my house! And, I see them pick up cats and cuddle them and they are always talking to them, just like I talk to my own cats. I think a cat is very lucky if he gets taken in at our shelter. This explains why they have a waiting list to get in and why cats are dumped on the door step on a regular basis. I love volunteering at Cat Welfare and I have only been volunteering there 3-4 years but I can't imagine not volunteering there!

    Pros

Very clean and cats well taken care of

    Cons

Needs to be open more hours

  • 7. Great place for kitties and people

    by: soraneko

I've been volunteering here since November and it's been just a great experience for me. I really enjoy cleaning cages and playing around with cats because the cats are just so adorable. It makes me feel that I want to take them all home. The staff works so hard to keep the place clean and to take care of all the cats. This is such a wonderful place for all cat-lovers, and even though I have a bad cat allergy, I can't stop coming to see all cats every Saturday.

    Pros

wonderful cats, staff, volunteers, and visiters

    Cons

    space limited

  • 8. awesome place

    by: rileylogan33

This place is wonderful!!! I have volunteered there and it is really a great place for the cats. They feel very loved and they are all equally cared for. Everyone is very nice and are really helpful. Even though it is very crowded, it is a really great environment for everyone.

    Pros

Very nice people, GREAT place for cats to stay.

    Cons

    crowded very easily

  • 9. Great Shelter

    by: MrsWato

This place is wonderful. It gives the cats a chance to be cats, roam around, play, get attention, until they find their forever home. They're always finding new fundraisers that are fun. My favorite part is the newsletter I get in the mail. It has stories of cats needing to be adopted along with those that have homes. The best part of the newsletter is the part that tells how many cats have found homes and have been altered in the past months. This way you can really appreciate all the good they do.

    Pros

    Only focused on cats

    Cons

Too many unwanted cats, that they can't take them all in

I have never visited but I read the top 20 and choose this one. I worked at a cat clinic so I know what it is like finding homes for cats. where I live there is no shelter that take cats. Since this group has been around for a long time, they deserve this!

This place is wonderful, and so are the people that work/volunteer here. I have only been here a few times with my daughter but I tell you everyone knows so much about the cats, and they are so helpful. I wish I could do more for the shelter since they are such a great place for the cats! They really truly care about the animals and that is the most important thing!

Such a great place with a great mission

  • 13. A place for luck cats

    by: margenew

I adopted my first CWA cat five years ago and was deeply impressed by the care the staff took to assure that I would provide a good home for Alley (whom they knew as Wilma.) My work schedule did not allow me to volunteer at that time, but I recently retired and have come to know the staff members and other volunteers and I'm still impressed. They really care about their cats and all the other homeless cats as well. The cats who find their way to CWA are lucky indeed to have such a place to stay while they wait to be adopted. And those who cannot be adopted have a home for life.

    Pros

    a caring, passionate staff

    Cons

    none

  • 14. This is the best shelter EVER

    by: Beagle100

I love this shelter because these people are so good with the cats. They know every cat by name, what it's personality is like, how long it's been at the shelter and who they are friends with. It's truely amazing to me how they can keep it all straight and the only thing I can think is that they just love the cats and love what they do.\r\n\r\nThis is the best shelter I've ever experienced.

    Pros

These people know and love cats

    by: rowdy4199

I have had the amazing oppertunity to all but grow up in the Cat Welfare shelter. My Aunt has been working there as long as I can remember and has shared the amazing things she does eveyday with my entire family. As a large family, most of us have owned a Cat Welfare rescue at one point in our lives and many of us have owned more than one. I know of no one who has not had their lives made all that much better by adoptin one of these wonderful animals. I had the chance to work at the shelter myself for many years and I can honestly say it is the most rewarding experience of my life. It is nice to be able to walk into a place that has the potential to be very sad and emotional and see nothing but happy cats and happy people. I am so grateful that there is a place like Cat Welfare and people like my Aunt. Without them I wouldn't have had my Midget for the best 8 years of my life, or been able to see Sneakers grow from a 2 week old furball into the 12 year old fatty she came to be, or spend the last 15 years growing up with Lucky by my side and I would not be able to look forward coming home to the unconditional love of my Dudley everyday. They saved all their lives and in return made mine so much better. Keep doing what you do. People need you more than you will ever know. Thank you!

    Pros

    Every little thing

    Cons

I don't think there is a con to saving lives

    by: birdtracks

A few years back, a teenager came to me distraught over a kitty that had been abandoned by her adult brother. Unable to care for the cat myself because of my own pet responsibilities at the time, I brought the kitty to Cat Welfare. The staff was wonderful! Both the kitty and the young person had their faith in humanity restored.

    Pros

    Caring staff, cheerful environment

    Cons

    none

  • 18. Cats and staff are great, need more room!

    by: shjgcochran

We recently moved into the area and found Cat Welfare when my daughter wanted to get donations for the shelter instead of birthday gifts. We got to visit with all of them and pet them. The cats were so friendly and sweet, it was heart breaking to leave them. The shelter does a great job with what they have, but they could use more room. I would love to see them win the million dollar makeover!

    Pros

    No kill shelter

    Cons

    not enough room

  • 19. We love Cat Welfare!

    by: gidgetpeke

We got our cat from Cat Welfare in 2003. She was considered a Special Adoption, and it took her a while to warm up to us, but she's so happy now! \n\nI love how the staff seem to know each and every kitty in the shelter. They can talk to you about a cat you might be interested in and help you find the perfect new addition to your family. I also love how the cats roam around. This is a great way to see the cats interact with one another and with you. \n\nCat Welfare is an awesome no-kill shelter. I really hope they get a makeover!

    Pros

    Very friendly and intimate

    Cons

  • 20. A caring place to find a cat

    by: pjguldan

Cat Welfare is a wonderful organization that has been helping cats for decades. The shelter has a great staff, many well cared for cats up for adoption, and has deep ties to the community. While the shelter is a little small, they have room for over 200 cats. It can be a little overwhelming with cats roaming free, but with a little persistence you can certainly find a cat (or two) that is the perfect fit for your home. We got our cat Greta from the shelter and would recommend Cat Welfare for anyone looking to get a kitten or adult cat.

    Pros

Great staff, many cats, no kill shelter

    Cons

    A little small

  • 21. Gotta love the welfare!

    by: Schmink

This place is truly a fantastic place. I got my kitty Ripley from the welfare over 9 years ago. This place is the kind of place that gives me faith in human kind, with people as caring as the people from the Cat Welfare. They are always thinking in the best interest of the cats, and they really deserved to be reconginzed.

    Pros

    Got my kitty from there

    by: sms2006

Cat Welfare Association in Columbus is a great shelter. It's clean, their marketing staff is very proactive. I always get hand written thanks you's for my donations, and I look forward to reading their newsletter every month. "Happy Homes" is my favorite part.

    Pros

The staff really loves the cats. I always get a hand written thank you note.

    Cons

Cat Welfare is amazing. They have the nicest workers. I love how they have so many toys and beds for them, unlike humane societies, where all they give them is a towel. I love going to spend time with the kitties ( :

    by: ztT4MP32741218

Cat Welfare performs a wonderful service by taking in stray cats and providing a permanent home for them until they can be adopted. Cats are not euthanized. The shelter offers a spay and neuter service. The facility is very clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. They always return phone messages promptly. One of my dear cats, Raisin, was adopted from Cat Welfare.

    Pros

Cat Welfare performs a much-needed service.

  • 32. Cat Welfare makes miracles happen!

    by: hlmcheng

Soon after my sister adopted her second cat, she took the family to Cat Welfare for a visit. At first, I was overwhelmed at the sight of so many cats wandering on the floor and in cages, but that feeling soon gave way to one of amazement: even with so many cats, the shelter was spotlessly clean and odourless, and the cats got along with each other, for the most part. The staff and volunteers were solicitous but not obstrusive, so we took our time in looking at all of the fabulous felines.\r\n\r\nThe miracle is that CWA has managed to turn my sister into a cat person! Growing up, we had goldfish, parakeets, hamsters, frogs, turtles and eventually a dog. Never a cat! In fact, I cannot even recall when I ever saw her petting a cat until now. What a difference CWA has made! Thank you, CWA, for everything that you do for your cats, the people who adopt them, and the community. You are a wonderful example for all other shelters out there.

    Pros

clean facility, wonderful felines and friendly staff

    Cons

    too many to choose from

  • 33. Cat Welfare ROCKS!!

    by: soulcowboy

I used to volunteer at Cat Welfare (in Columbus, OH) several years ago (back when CWA was in the old building next door). I would go with my girlfriend, who was an OSU vet student. We would take care of the sick cats. First of all, cats do really seem to have 9 lives. Secondly, CWA takes care of all their cats - and there are times when there are a lot of cats there - and the volunteers take VERY good care of them!! If we had more room in our house we would get several more cats from Cat Welfare!! As it is, a few years ago I adopted a three legged cat from Cat Welfare. She is SO sweet. If you are looking for a cat, please consider stopping by Cat Welfare. Oh, and pick-up a 2008 calendar, too!! :)

    Pros

    They LOVE the kitties there!!

    Cons

    Can't think of any

  • 34. So many cats!

    by: amyrae

My daughter loves to go with us just to drop off donations so that she can pet all of the cats. Many cats are uncaged and are snoozing and playing in the main room. Fun, fun, fun!

    Pros

Lots of cats in all colors and ages

    Cons

Who can choose from so many?

  • 35. Cat Welfare is the BEST - But pick two!

    by: hcarlisle

I got my boys at Cat Welfare almost 12 years ago. And I have been sponsoring cages, donating items (both for the shelter and for the garage sale) and in general sending everyone I know there ever since. I have adopted some other cats (as a sponsor for other people) and I always tell people...pick two! The one thing I have learned in all of these years is that cats are happy when they have a buddy. I can't imagine life without the boys and it is thanks to Cat Welfare for doing the super job they do in loving cats and finding homes (sometimes in the shelter) for so many wonderful critters. Thanks Cat Welfare...you are the BEST!

    Pros

Kind, helpful, wonderful community dedicated to making cats lives wonderful

    Cons

not enough space to help everyone

  • 36. Cat Welfare - A leader in the cat community

    by: catsruledogsdrool

For 63 years Cat Welfare Association has been helping the homeless cats and kittens in central Ohio. This organization is what every limited intake cat shelter should model themselves after. Superb cat care, caring and passionate staff, loyal members and volunteers. CWA knows that open admissions is not the answer to the homeless cat problem - open admissions results in 80% of cats being euthanized here in central Ohio. A limited intake facility that promotes adoption and advocates spay and neuter, this wonderful organization has adopted over 17,500 cats into loving homes in the last 18 years alone and helped over 19,000 cats get spayed and neutered during the past 18 years! This organization is heads and tails above any other in central Ohio. Keep up the great work!

    Pros

excellent care of cats, wonderful staff, loyal supporters

    Cons

    need more space

  • 37. Look no further if you're looking for a cat in the Columbus Ohio area

    by: punkinhead

I've only volunteered a few times but the ladies I've ran into at this shelter are so compassionate about the cats and their purpose. It warms my heart this no-kill organization exists. \n\nThey helped me get 3 ferals spayed/neutered and were the only place in town I could get ahold of who would loan me the traps. \n\nI applaud their efforts!

    Pros

    no kill

    Cons

not the shelter's fault but there are just too many cats needing good homes

  • 38. Cat Welfare Is The Best

    by: EddieP

Cat Welfare has been taking in homeless cats in the Columbus community for over 50 years. I wish I could tell you how many lives they have saved in that amount of time but I can not. But every year Cat Welfare saves more lives than it did the year before.\r\n\r\nThe volunteers and staff is a dedicated group of people that love cats and work towards making the cats world a better place to be.

  • 40. My favorite place!

    by: CWAlover

I have come to this shelter for my lunch hour every day for nearly six years. This is my favorite place in my city, and that is saying something! These animals are absolutely loved and protected and fought for every single day by the dedicated staff and volunteers. I have never seen shelter animals so happy, comfortable and well-fed. There are an estimated one million strays in Columbus, Ohio and Franklin County. At any given time, only 300 of them are the truly lucky ones who find their way into this shelter. There is a waiting list, as caring people in the community know they are a no-kill shelter...and the local Humane Society (which is overwhelmed by the enormity of this tragedy) has no choice but to euthanize. Since 1945, a handful of compassionate cat lovers has worked to protect the ones they can, and educate this community about the vital importance of spaying and neutering all others in the area. It began as a grass roots effort, and has grown by word of mouth year by year. The staff work for very little, but are here because of their fierce love for these creatures. Everything the community gives to this shelter comes back ten times to us. I wish I could win the lottery so I could leave a fortune to this shelter, and get insurance for the staff. But for now, all I can do is ask everyone reading this to visit this shelter and give whatever they can for these precious animals---especially time, attention and love.

    Pros

clean, loving atmosphere, commitment to these animals above all else

    Cons

    absolutely none

  • 41. Nice shelter and cats

And the cats were well taken care of.\n\nThey also put on some wonderful fundraisers which we have gone to. I really like cat welfare.

When we relocated to Columbus,Ohio a few years ago Iwas so fortunate to learn about Cat Welfare a no kill shelter. We visited several times before adopting Annie a tiger cat. She is the love of our lives and has given us endless joy. When we were again relocated to Ft.Collins Co. I gladly made many donations to their Catique a fantastic fund raiser for their facility. Now I volunteer with Ft. Collins Cat Rescue because the staff at Cat Welfare showed us what great need their was for abandoned and homeless animals to find homes. Also their spay/neuter program has contributed greatly toward trying to solve the unwanted pet problem.

    Pros

We've adopted two cats from Cat Welfare. One 6 week old kitten, and one 10+ year old adult male. The facility is wonderfully clean, the staff and volunteers are kind, knowledgable and caring. We felt welcome from the moment we walked-in, and never felt rushed (and on both trips we took a LONG time with the cats)! The staff was wonderful answering our questions and knew the personalities of each cat we asked about! We appreciate so much you taking care of our guys until we found them at your shelter! We simply can't say enough about the wonderful job that Cat Welfare does!!!

  • 52. Cat Welfare is the BEST

    by: Nancyhile

I discovered Cat Welfare a year and a half ago when I stopped in to donate money for a friend who had lost her cat. I had always wanted to volunteer at an animal shelter but was afraid it would be too emotional for me. It was at first but the more I visited Cat Welfare the more I realized that these cats are being treated wonderfully and are enjoying the best lives that are available to them. It amazes me how the staff and volunteers can rattle off so many of the cats' names and characteristics. I feel confident that any of them could direct a potential adopter to the perfect cat. I have done some follow up calls for adoptions and enjoy hearing how happy most are with their cats. Just the fact that Cat Welfare does follow ups within a week of adoption shows that they care and want to provide the best chance of a long and happy relationship between family and adopted cat. I can't say enough good things about Cat Welfare! If you are thinking about adopting a cat...or volunteering, please pay them a visit. You won't be disappointed!

    Pros

    Incredibly caring staff and volunteers

    Cons

I really can't think of any...I suppose it could be bigger so more cats could be sheltered there.

  • 53. Wonderful volunteers

Thanks Cat Welfare! In these trying times I was happy to find a place where I could afford to get my cats spayed and neutered.

  • 54. Helping the world of Cats

    by: Sadiesmygirl

I read in Cat Welfare's Feb. newsletter that in 2007 they had altered 1689 cats with there various altering programs and that they hoped to increase that number in 2008. I emailed Gail that day to volunteer at the spay/neuter clinics. I will be starting on Feb. 13th. \r\nI had been to various Cat Welfare activites in the past and had always been impressed with how clean it was, LACK of smell associated with many shelters and how friendly the volunteers are.\r\nThey offer many different ways in which a person can help the cat world in the Columbus Ohio area, be it with volunteering at the shelter, vounteering at any of the many outreach fundraising activites, or with a donation. \r\nThe adoption fee for adult cats and kittens ARE very reasonable!\r\nCat Welfare is a NO-Kill shelter so the only thing that they are never short of is cats or kittens.

    Pros

    To many to mention

    Cons

Not enough space for all the homeless cats

  • 55. Great place!

    by: mporte25

The staff really knows the personality of the cats. They take time with them so you can get an idea of how your new kitty will fit in.

    Pros

    Lots of cats

    Cons

    Low on space

  • 56. What a caring staff and loving facility

    by: byrdus24

I really enjoyed my visit to cat welfare. The facility was great and the kitties were all very happy. In this mostly cage free enviornment, kitties are able to interact and cuddle with eachother, staff, and visitors. I really like their outlook on all cats are adoptable, even those with medical needs. THe staff is friends and knowledgable, and health care needs are met. I would recommend keeping the chronic snufflers in a more confined area and keeping personal for that area only, and in the clean area only. Even though most cats have herpes, some of those cats seemed sickly enough to be contagious and disease transmission to the healthy cats seemed very possible in the current layout. keep up the good work with all the kitties you place! Also advertising your spay/neuter program more so that people are more aware would be great.

    Pros

    all kitties are considered adoptable

    Cons

the herpes room is not separated enough from the "clean" room

  • 57. CWA is awesome

    by: ibarnhar

I love Cat Welfare. They are doing the best they can to serve the community and address cat over-population. I fostered a homeless cat once, and Cat Welfare helped me arrange an affordable spay for the cat before I found a new home for her. They are dedicated to improving the welfare of cats and finding homes for the ones they are able to shelter.

    Pros

    well-intentioned and helpful

    Cons

    limited capacity

    Pros

    Cons

unavoidable smell with so many cats

  • 59. Cat Welfare "Catique"

    by: lavendercat

Either before or after you visit the cats at Cat Welfare, you must visit the "Catique" which is an on site garage sale that raises money for the cats at the shelter. Cat Welfare receives donations of items from the members of Cat Welfare and also from people in the community that want to help raise money to feed and shelter the 250-300 cats in residence. All donations are tax deductable and you can get a receipt for your donation. \r\nThey sell all kinds of things including clothes, shoes, books, housewares, bedding, small appliances, jewelry, candles, frames and artwork, collectables, CDs, records, DVDs, videos, and many items that are cat related. Basically you can find just about anything that you would see at any garage sale.\r\nIt is an indoor event so it is open year around. There is a great group of volunteers that work hard to put together a good sale every week. Since all the workers are volunteers, every cent you spend goes directly to the cats. Items are reasonably prices for a quick sale. But remember, it's only on Saturdays.

    Pros

Raises money for the cats at the shelter

    Cons

Only open on Saturday fm 9am to 3pm

    by: AbbyScott

Great place to get a cat or kitten. Hobbes came to live at my house as a kitten from Cat Welfare. She was a great cat. She loved to come in the bathroom when I took a shower and I would sing the Hobber Bobber Bibber Bobber song to her. They have a newer shelter than they had when I got her and it is set up nicely. Wonderful place to go and visit the cats or adopt.

This is a great organization dedicated to helping homeless cats and kittens in the Columbus Ohio area. • 64. The BEST Cat shelter anywhere!

    by: vickeybicky01

Cat Welfare Association, is truly a safe haven for cat lovers, cats, children, seniors, adults, and teenagers alike. I know from personal experience the great, GREAT benefits of this shelter. I remember the first time my family and I went to the shelter. We were looking for a good house cat, after the whiter kitten we were about to adopt from a coworker passed away. As soon as the car stopped moving, my daughter hopped out of the car and raced towards the shelter. Personally, I was not all that excited, beleiving that all shelter cats are wild and unfit to live in a home. Boy, was I wrong. As soon ad stepped through the door, a kitten and cat "welcoming committee" immediately swarmed around my legs. I could barely walk two inches without one of them getting in my path and looking up at me with hopeful eyes. I was immediately seduced. That was the moment when I met my first cat, Momo. Momo, unlike some of the other cats, stayed quietly in her cage, looking at me with bright, intelligent eyes. The moment I picked her up, I realized she was the one for me. We brought her home, and she stayed for a good two years. Unfortunately, Momo developed a habit of not using the litterbox, and we had to bring her back when it got too extreme (poop on the pillow extreme). I really miss Momo, and wonder about her every once in a while when I'm deep in my work. Cat Welfare has become THE favorite hangout for my daughter; we go there every year on her birthday as her "birthday wish." She is deeply, madly in love with the shelter, and so am I. It truly is a joy to see a non-profit, non-killing, angelic shelter take in all those hopeful felines who have never received human love in their life, until now.

    Pros

I adopted my first cat there

    Cons

    Absolutely none whatsoever

  • 66. Cat Welfare is an Amazing Place!!

    by: Lovemykittens

Cat Welfare has touched my life. I moved to Columbus over the summer and wanted to get a couple furry little friends to share my apartment with. I looked at information for several shelters in the area, and I was blown away by Cat Welfare. They are a no-kill shelter that have certainly saved the lives of too many cats to count. My two sweeties came from their shelter and couldn't be better. They had a rough start in their lives- abandoned in a dumpster, but Cat Welfare took them in and nursed them while they were sick. In another shelter, they may never have had a chance! I'm so happy that I have had the pleasure of going to Cat Welfare. They are, hands-down, the best shelter I've ever seen. I would, and have, recommend them to anyone who wants to get a cat from an amazing organization!

    Pros

Such wonderful staff, kitties, and everything!

    Cons

That more shelters aren't like Cat Welfare!

  • 67. I would take them all home if I could...

    by: AmandaWinter

I got my furry, feline friend at CWA a year and a half ago and as of right now, that's been the best year and a half of my life! She's the best match for me (we're like Lucy and Ethel...) She's the most loving, affectionate kitty who loves everyone! I owe a huge thank you to CWA! Thanks for all that you do - you truly provide an unmatched service to Central Ohio!\n\n(If Lucy wasn't such an only child, I'd adopt over and over again from CWA.)

    Pros

    No-kill, clean, caring, welcoming

    Cons

Too many cats - not enough people to adopt!

  • 68. A Fabulous Facility!

    by: polyphemus

My daughter and I began to volunteer at Cat Welfare and the experience was really rewarding. The staff and other long time volunteers welcomed us and helped us all afternoon answering our questions, showing us where things needed were located, getting to know the individual personalities of the cats and how to work with visitors coming into the facility. We enjoyed talking with the visitors, staff, and playing with the cats. We were impressed with how well run the operation was especially when realizing how many activities were going on at the same time! The staff was quite knowledgeable and eager to help. The care and concern for each and every cat there was quite evident. Although the goal is to find a good home for each cat, they are lucky to be so well cared while at Cat Welfare!

I have been volunteering with CWA for over a year now and always look forward to spending socialization time with the "residents". The staff and other volunteers that I have worked with are genuine, caring folks whose love of cats is quite apparent. The screening, care, etc. of the cats is exceptional and it's an awesome place to come a find a new "family member" or if you are having a down day, come in a pet one of the furbabies - guaranteed to lift your spirits! :)

    Pros

    No kill shelter

    Cons

Wish more cats could be accommodated

  • 71. CWA Fostermom for 10+ Years

    by: marysworld

When I was growing up my father was the one who would take in the homeless cats. My mother was the one who would load them up & take to my grandparents farm & turn them loose. To this day I don't know how he became affiliated with CWA. I have carried on the tradition of taking in the homeless just like him. My husband has come around from tolerating cats to caring & appreciating them. Our household consists of 11 cats. Of the eleven five of them are CWA kitties. Of the five from CWA I have had the pleasure of being the CWA foster mom to four of them. The fifth one was the offspring of a feral kitty that one of the CWA staff looked after in her neighborhood. The mother cat had been killed & this little guy was left by himself. She brought him into the shelter & he was hiding in the back of a cage peering out from under a blanket. She asked me if I'd be interested in taking him home & seeing if I could help socialize him. I did & he won me over. \r\nExperiencing a semi-feral kitty go from being terrified & hiding to sitting in your lap purring as your cleaning the litter pan in his room is so moving. \r\nFostering can be tough as you do get attached to the more needy ones of the litter or at least I do. I've had them as young as a day old with no mother. But to have the opportunity to mold them into a friendly, loving, healthy & playful kitten gives them the best chance of going back to the shelter & getting adopted quickly. Having a loving and supportive cat household allows me to hand the little ones back to the shelter when they reach 2 pounds which is usually 8-10 weeks. No one wants to adopt a skinny sickly kitten. People look for round chubby & robust kittens and that's what I specialize in. CWA really makes a difference in the lives of the cats AND humans that they come in contact with. I can't think of a better shelter to support in the Central Ohio area or in the state of Ohio for that matter. They are #1 in my book.

    Pros

Caring & educated staff/volunteers, great variety of kitties, great altering program, clean smelling building, affordable adoption rates and more

    Cons

Not enough room to take in all of the homeless cats of Central Ohio

  • 73. Best cat shelter in town!

    by: polooncheng

My daughter took me and my wife to visit CWA this summer, shortly after she adopted Tabitha. While I'm not a 'cat' person (we have a 10-year-old husky at home), I was truly impressed by the shelter: spotlessly clean, lively and fun with many of the cats roaming free on the floor, and with some of the friendliest cats I've ever met. I expected animal shelters to be depressing and dreary places, but CWA certainly taught me that it didn't have to be the case. \r\n\r\nWhen my daughter adopted her third cat Ariel from CWA, she didn't tell us about it for a couple of weeks afterwards, for fear that we would not 'approve' of her adopting a kitty with 'special' physical features. Ironically, as it turns out, of her three cats, Ariel is the one who has found a special place in *MY* heart (and I'm a dog person). Ariel is adorable! I guess the point of this is that there is no such a thing as an unadoptable cat/dog, only people not willing to put in the time and effort to nurture that animal. Whether it is an older cat, a cat with an illness, or a cat whose only fault is that it doesn't like to sit on laps (that may change once it is adopted), you may still get as much pleasure out of having them as pets in your home. \r\n\r\nThere are so many wonderful cats at CWA, so many personalities to choose from, it would be impossible for you to NOT to want to take one (or several) home with you the next time you visit.

    Pros

fantastic cats and a shelter that is fun to visit

    Cons

too many cats still needing a home

I've read the reviews by others, and I agree with every one of them about how amazing Cat Welfare is. I just wanted to add that you don't have to love cats to appreciate the beauty of CW. It's a place where kind-hearted people go out of their way to give an otherwise abused and abandoned cat a chance to survive, find a new family and be happy. CW's wonderful work touches the human spirit.

    by: hdziema

My husband and i started going to cat welfare per a recommendation from a friend, while we didnt' intend on adopting another cat (we already had two, plus three dogs!) a small kitten named Petey fell in love with my husband....and likewise my husband with him! So begins our love affair with Cat Welfare! Ever since we have been frequent visitors of the facility and typicaly can be seen there every weekend, we have become foster parents and have adopted two more cats in the process!!!\r\n\r\nThere is no better place in the area to find that new addition to your family! The cats are able to roam and play and be free to socialize and more than likely they will pick you rather than you pick them!!! which....to have the best pet thats how it should be!\r\n\r\nWe will never consider another place when looking for cats ever again! (though now with 5 it will be quite some time before we get more!!...though if i could..i would bring them all home!!

    Pros

very clean, everyone friendly, cats very well socialized

In the past 1.5 years, I've adopted three cats from Cat Welfare: Hannah, Tabitha and Ariel. The reason for this (and why I go back to Cat Welfare every weekend to visit the kitties) is because I absolutely support CW's no-kill policy, even for those unfortunate cats that get returned more than once. The staff and volunteers there are wonderful and genuine in their desire to help the cats. And the cats....well, what can I say? They are fantastic!!!

Cat Welfare is a wonderful shelter and organization that does a lot to help the homeless cats in Central Ohio. They have a great shelter that houses between 250-300 truly amazing cats. Additionally, Cat Welfare is able to participate at community events to raise awareness about homeless cats. They have spay/neuter clinics to help the curb the overpopulation of cats. Every Sat. there is a garage sale at the shelter to help raise money for the kitties. They also have other fun fundraising events, like the annual 5K in Clintonville and the Cat Welfare calendar. Visit their website: www.catwelfareohio.com for more information. If you're in Central Ohio stop in and meet some of the cats and see for yourself how great the shelter is.

  • 81. Cat Welfare Association - find your next cat here!

    by: khillcwapr

If you have never visited Cat Welfare Association you are missing out on a feline lover's haven! A limited intake facility, CWA does not euthanize for space and relies on adoptions to help take in more cats. Started in 1945, CWA is one of the oldest animal welfare organizations in Columbus, Ohio and the first dedicated solely to cats. Adoption fees are lower than most other shelters in town and you get the most bang for your buck at CWA. Tests, vaccinations, microchipping, spay/neuter surgery are all included in the low adoption fees. This is how serious CWA is about the cats in their care - they offer a lifetime return on any cat adopted from CWA. No matter the reason or the amount of time that has passed - they will take a CWA cat back. These people really care about the welfare of their cats!\r\nFree roaming cats make this a fun shelter to visit and pick out a new member of the family. There are also caged cats, dozing in little kitty blankets, and a shy cat area for those not thrilled with having close to 300 roommates. Cats of every color, size and age can be found - something for everyone! The hardest part is not taking them all home!\r\nAn organization that relies solely on donations from the community, CWA has lots of creative fundrasiers. The Catique is an upscale garage sale open every Saturday from 9-3 where you can find amazing deals. CWA also partners up with local businesses including PetPeople and National Tire & Battery. They are passionate about raising money for the cats in their care!\r\nSo if you want to see a shelter that is inspiring rather than depressing come visit Cat Welfare Association. They are open every day 11am-3:30pm. Check out their website which includes their newsletter, The Feline Forum, and many programs and ways that you can help at www.catwelfareohio.com.

    Pros

Free roaming cats in two adoption rooms, cat loving staff, does not euthanize for space, cats in every color, size, age - something for everyone!
