Dedicated volunteer staff takes excellent care of their animals. They have long-time volunteers, which adds to the continuity of care and knowledge base

I know people who volunteer here, and one great thing is that they usually can find homes for most of their animals. They have a small location, but lots of dedicated volunteers.

This is an impressive place just due to the wonderful characters of the people running the place. But to think that these are ALL volunteers really puts this place a step above.

It's hard to think of what to say about the Evanston Animal Shelter and CARE, the all-volunteer organization that runs it, because no matter what I say, it'll be an understatement. I've been familiar with the shelter for seven years, when a good friend was a dog volunteer and adoption counselor, though I've only been involved for a year and a half. I went in looking to adopt a cat and, while I didn't find a match that day, I left a volunteer. The volunteers who run the shelter do an amazing job with very limited resources. Their goal is to find the perfect home for all of the animals, only adopting when they feel that the animal and the potential new parent are a match for each other. There is no deadline by which animals must be adopted; if it takes six months to find the right home, they're welcome to stay at the shelter (and the volunteers will put in extra effort to care for the animal during its extended stay). The volunteers genuinely care about the animals, often coming in outside of their shifts to spend time with an animal in need. When you adopt from the Evanston Animal Shelter and CARE, you know that you are getting an animal that has been well cared for and that the adoption counselors have done their best to match you with an animal that's compatible with your lifestyle.

    Genuinely caring volunteers

    Limited space

I have never met a more caring or dedicated group of volunteers than those who run CARE at the Evanston Animal Shelter. Working with limited space, they make miracles happen for lost, homeless and abandoned pets. Showing cats and kittens to potential adopters in employee bathrooms, exercising dogs and puppies on 4 or more walks daily.... Never forgetting that the animals in their care deserve love and care no matter how cold or hot the outside temperature. The follow up is incredible. Your new pet will always be part of the CARE family no matter how long it has been since your adoption. They stay connected with events and newsletters, fundraisers and community outreach.
