i got all my cats (5) from the shelter. they are great cats. i also got a dog isobel,a german shepard/chow mix, but they had actually labeled her as german shepard lab. the shelter is so great, they are no kill and i like to visit the animals even when i'm not adopting.the shelter has so much heart and i would volunteer if i could, but my parents won't let me. i am really intrested in fostering, which the last i heard they really need. they need a LOT more space, but its not they're fault.

    Pros

    really awesome pets!!!

    Cons

    need a new site :(

  • 2. I LOVE my BHS dog!!

    by: rminor21

I have adopted two dogs from Butte Humane Society, and they are the best things in my life! I highly recommend giving shelter dogs a second (or first!) chance. They are always so grateful for every moment spent together...

    Pros

    Non-Euthanasia Shelter

    Cons

    None!

  • 3. Time to Reward the Butte Humane Society!

    by: JacLWin

Keep up the great work. The ED is doing a remarkable job with keeping the Butte Humane Society in the limelight and getting the necessary support they so desperately need. I hope you win the Zootoo makeover. A fan of the shelter...

    Pros

Loving, caring staff is the greatest to work with. Their hearts are in the right place.

    Cons

Need lots of financial assistance to grow their service.

  • 4. simply the best

    by: oldegold

Very caring people that love animals and are careful when allowing adoption. This shelter has been the object of many donations by my business and is close to my heart. I have taken animals to them on occasion and felt that they would care for and respect them. Very Very good shelter.

    Pros

clean, caring staff, well kept animals

    Cons

    none

  • 5. much needed improvement with customer service

    by: lali

I and several family members have adopted animals of various ages and breeds. We love animals soo much and try our best to help. I have even filled out volunteer paper work recently to help with the customer service in the lobby. I think that most of the employees and volunteers are doing all that they can to help the animals and to me that is what makes a place great! keep in mind that customer service is key in any business and adopting out animals to good homes is what you want. Employees need to acknowledge each person as they come through the door and if they are busy, let the person know that yyou will help th asap. I say this because on numerous visits I and they people I was with were ignored to the point that we left, after waiting for up to an hr at one point. I love the BCHS rescues animals and would like to help in any way!

    Pros

wide variaty of animals to be adopted. They are trying!

    Cons

    customer service needs improving!

    by: adrienneb5

I adopted my cat PC from this shelter about 4 years ago. She had just been brought in, she was abandoned, sick, really skinny and not the cutest kitten at first glance. But, I have been known to take the ugliest and make it beautiful, and she is now! she's the most loving cat and loves to curl up in your lap or lay on your shoulder. also, i just started volunteering there and so far i love it and the staff are very helpful and nice!

    Pros

    friendly, clean envoirnment

    Cons

unfortunately, they don't have enough room for what they do

  • 9. i love you

I am very upset at the zootoo contest. The voting was based on east coast time and when I could not vote until the evening, I lost my votes for the next day. I left an event early on Sat night to come home and vote. It was at 10 or 10;30 at night when I voted. Then I had no votes today because they used east coast time and those were not my Sat votes they were my Sunday votes because it was after midnight on the east coast. THAT IS UNFAIR FOR US THE ONLY WEST COAST SHELTER!!!!!!!

    Pros

    love ya

  • 11. Butte Humane Society needs your votes!

    by: Carlosmom

We have lived in Chico for 17 years, and except for one rescue cat that we adopted from the Chico Cat Coalition, all of our pets have come from the Butte Humane Society. The staff and volunteers are so welcoming and enthusiastic. The shelter is badly in need of updating. Most of the dog runs are outside, and Chico can get below freezing in the winter and tops 100 degrees almost every day in the summer. The staff does the best it can with what they have to work with, but really need the help of our community. Please vote for Butte Humane Society in the Shelter Makeover. They really need and deserve it!

    Pros

    Loving, enthusiastic staff

    Cons

outdoor facility, badly in need of updates

  • 12. BCHS is THE Place!

    by: Edward16

A wonderful place. We adopted our cat from there. The BCHS staff are wonderful and deeply commited to placing pets into good homes and making good matches betwixt animals and potential owners. Unfortunately they are sadly underfunded. Being in a rural county hard hit by economic woes they are desperately short of funds. Most of the dogs are in outdoor (covered) runs all day and the cats are confined inside two small rooms and several cages. The BCHS needs your help to meet their potential.

    Pros

Wonderful staff, deeply commited to helping those who can't fend for themselves

    Cons

BCHS is deeply over extended and underfunded.

I've volunteered at the Butte Humane Society a couple of times and the staff was wonderful. They were very friendly and when I considered adopting from them they really wanted to make sure the right dog went to the right person.

    Pros

    Nice Staff, Wonderful Animals

    Cons

Shelter needs more money for remodeling

    by: AliceAckerman

Butte Humane Society trys to keep many animals out of being put to sleep and are on duty constantly. As I patroled the area with the Sheriff's department, I was able to see for myself the great work they do and how animals are handled. When I lost my pet, they were very kind, and considerate with helping me find another good animal. They are in great need for more help to supply better kennels and cat shelters.

    Pros

    Friendly Kindly Helpful

    Cons

    Shelters need repairs

  • 16. Great Advertising for adoption

    by: khogue40

This is a great and loving animal shelter. They deserve your support so they can modernize their shelter. They put very cute pictures of the animals up for adoption in the local newspaper. It makes you want to go there to adopt a pet. Pets are loved by volunteers and staff. Great opportunities for teenagers to help with the animals. Kathryn

    Pros

    Great advertising

    Cons

Shelter could use updating offered by zootoo.com

  • 17. A wonderful, caring shelter!

    by: radunlap

I have lived in the Chico area all my life and the Butte Humane Society has always been there trying to help as many animals as possible. My wife and I recently adopted a little bunny from them and it is a wonderful animal that they had taken great care of! The staff and volunteers at every level all honestly care and try their hardest to help every animal and customer that comes in.

    Pros

Caring shelter that tries to find a home for every animal.

    Cons

    Facilities need repairs

  • 18. We expanded our family

    by: Zebragirl2

We have lived in Chico for 17 years and apart from one rescue kitten, we have gotten all of our animals from the Butte Humane Society. We love to visit there, but usually leave saddened because the shelter is so overcrowded. The staff is great, but can only work with what they have. The building needs so much work! Our family encourages you to vote for our shelter so they can continue to help more animals. Thank you.

    Pros

    caring, involved staff and volunteers

    Cons

    facility too small and outdated

  • 19. A fantastic shelter

    by: HelenEtz

This shelter has a great book with all the animals who need forever homes - something about each one with a picture - it is a great way to match new owners to pets - the staff and volunteers are very knowledgable and helpful and full of enthusiam for each animal in the shelter. They welcome contributions like towels, blanklets, gloves, hose spray ends. It is a cheerful loving place to visit to help or find a "friend" to take home and love.

    Pros

The people who run it and many dedicated volunteers

I enjoy going to Butte human. Just to see the animals. I actually got my 1st pet. When ever I can't take care of my pet I take it to Butte Human because I know they only let the best owners take the pets

    Pros

    Great selection

    Cons

  • 21. Supper Awesome

    by: BlooJae

The Butte Humane Society has a very friendly staff. They are very knowledgable about the animals they have at the center. Their center isn't very big so some of the animals are outside in kennels. All the animals are very well taken care of and they are very friendly for the most part. They house mostly dogs but you can find just about any breed of cat and dog you want.

    Pros

really nice staff, plenty of animals,

    Cons

    not a very big center

  • 22. PetCo

    by: browniedog

PetCo has self-service tubs to wash dogs. They provide towels, soap and a dryer. A ramp is provided for dogs to walk up (or push up if they are stubborn). It's great for my large dogs!

    Pros

Do it yourself: Great place to bathe large dogs

    Cons

    None

  • 23. Are very caring volunteers

    by: wheresblair

We had to do the saddest thing, we had to surrender our basenji's. They were our family, it was just my husband and I and our two dogs. Then we had to move my son and his family in our home. Our dogs were not used to kids and Maggie bit my grand daughter two times the last one was pretty bad, but it was not the dogs fault she was laying under her blanket and my grandughter jumped on her. I don't blame either one. But I could not have her bit again. So we took them to Butte Humane Society and right when we walked in a young man got right on the phone and called his mom (she works for the Basenji rescue). So we surrenderd our basenji's. They new we were upset about it and calmed us down and told us the Basenji rescue would find a good home for them. Then we told them they have to be adopted together. They have been together for 6 years. Because Maggie bit my grand daughter she had to stay at the shelter for 10 days. They were kind enough to keep Benji (Maggies brother) with her until they were ready to go to the Basenji rescue. They were great when I called all the time and asked how they were doing (our dogs were in our lives for 6 years). Then they gave me info on the foster parent for the Basenji rescue and I now know my dogs are together and now in San Francisco with good people. Butte Humane Society deserves to win this make over. They take in dogs & cats that was at high kill status at other shelters and bring them to theirs and finds homes for them. And when we are ready to addopt a family dog we will go to Butte Humane Society because we know we can trust them.

    Pros

Called Basenji rescue right when we arrived at shelter.

    Cons

Took awhile to surrender our dogs because they were short on staff help and there were a lot of customers there, but we don't hold that against shelter.

  • 24. BHS is Well Accepted by Our Community

    by: cyrusfountain

For how old Butte Humane Societies' facility is and how limited their space is, their staff of very friendly and knowledgeable people gives Butte County a wonderful animal shelter. Our community is very fortunate to have a very large group of passionate volunteers that work for BHS as well. Working their myself as a volunteer, it seemed as if there were more volunteers than actual staff and the volunteers were getting in the way of each other as we worked on socializing dogs and cats. This is a great thing to witness, because the more people helping out in the community the better. However, I believe this problem is mostly due to limited space and that the original layout of the facility is a poor design that does not cater well to the current facilities needs. BHS holds a very informative volunteer orientation on every other Saturday I believe. The fact that so many people in our community are involved with our little animal shelter says a lot about how friendly and professional BHS really is. This is an animal shelter that cares and so they are well accepted by the community. This is a very busy crew of animal lovers! The BHS facility is old, yet the staff make sure it is very clean. Working with what they have and within their limited space, BHS really does a superb job in our community. Their low-cost vaccination and spay/neuter clinics are a crucial benefit to Butte County. Overall I gave the Butte Humane Society animal shelter a 5 out of 5 rating, because they deserve recognition for their hard work. Regardless of what the facility is lacking, the BHS team does a remarkable job.

    Pros

Very Knowledgeable People, Decent Customer Service

    Cons

Old Facility, Limited Space, Hours of Operation

    Cons

    Small, needs expansion.

  • 27. Foster Dog Turned Family member

    by: salzberry1

We have had our dog for 10 years now. We saw him at the mall and was in desperate need of someone to pay for medicine to nurse him back to health. My mom agreed to take him home and get him better and well, 10 years later he is still the sweetest happy dog we met in the mall!

    Pros

Very active in the community with support and eagerness to find pets a home

    Cons

In desperate need of a makeover

    Cons

  • 29. Saved a kitten I found

    by: NatJuan

Walking my friends dog I found a tiny stray kitten that had been left for dead. I climbed through about 12 feet of weeds with stickers and pulled the kitten through the fence. It was TINY. The poor little guy was dehydrated and hungry, and wouldn't stop crying. I didn't know what to do, and I thought for sure it might die. I took the kitten to the Butte Humane Society and right away they started working on him. They cleaned him, fed him - and they saved him! I went back about every week to ask how the little one was doing - it was too young for adoption. I wanted the kitty for myself because I had found him - but one day that I came back he had been adopted already. My heart was broken - and the girl who helped me at the shelter said she was sorry and that she wasn't there when someone adopted him. But I was very happy that the little one got a new home - and a chance at life. I want to say thank you to all those you volunteer at the Butte Humane Society - you're amazing! This facility definitely deserves to win the makeover - it's much needed. Because Butte Humane Society resides in Chico - a college town, I'm sure that college students get a dog or cat, and then realize they can't afford the time or money to take care of it - or most likely can't have a pet in their apartment. I have seen friends have to surrender their pets when it was their last alternative. But never once have I heard of the Butte Humane Society reject an animal that was in need of a home. Please vote for the Butte Humane Society!!

    Pros

caring, friendly staff, always take surrenders

    Cons

  • 30. little place with the biggest heart!

    by: cristal07

I volunteer at the Butte Humane Society whenever I can. Every time I am there all the staff are very friendly and helpful. It breaks my heart when it's the summer and their numbers raise. They will never turn down an animal, or use euthanasia on the animals. They need help!!!!! With the crazy weather in Chico the animals never know what to expect, if heat, rain, or even fire ashes. PLEASE HELP THE ANIMALS

    Pros

staff have a heart for all the animals, low kill shelter

    Cons

sadly it's too small in the summer with all the animals

  • 31. Compassionate Staff

    by: karenhradecky

My old kitty was beyond saving and she was suffering when I took her to the shelter. The staff at Butte Humane Society were all very caring and compassionate. They supoported me in the decision to put my kitty to rest. I found the experience much less painful than it could have been.

    Pros

They are doing a great job!

    Cons

They need funds to improve the old facility.

  • 32. Thank you Butte Humane society!

    by: NatalieHoffman

One saturday i caught 7 farrell cats. One by one I brought them in, and they were more than accommodating to take the cats off my hands. It is better that they will have a better chance at a healthy, safer life.

    Pros

takes in all animals in need

    Cons

    TOO crowded!

  • 33. Shelter desperately needs upgrades -

    by: OldMacDonaldsFarm

This shelter does so much with so little. They really care about all of the animals that they take in, which are more and more in this troubled economy. Volunteers round out a great staff. Several of my friends & family have adopted great pets from the shelter.

    Pros

    Great staff & wonderful volunteers.

    Cons

Facility is too small and in need of repairs. Cats cramped together.

  • 34. We Need Help

    by: Renayjayde

the folks at Butte co Humane society really care about the animals but their resources are very limited.

    Pros

    only no kill shelter around

    Cons

    needs updating, and remodeling

  • 35. Great place

    by: agamba

My family almost adopted a dog from here a few months ago. They were very nice. Also, some dogs were brought to my school to raise money. They did rent-a-puppy where you could walk a dog for 15 or 30 minutes. They were great. The dogs were so good its so sad to know that these dogs are in a shelter.

    Pros

    Great people, amazing animals

    Cons

    Needs a makeover

  • 36. Butte Humane Society incredible pet friendly

    by: cat3escher

To find a pet the staff took much time with a "meet and greet" session to get acquainted, staff offered sound common sense advice and were intuitive to pet and its potential owners. Dogs from the shelter are friendly from the good and loving attention they receive while there. More staff and space will definitely help them out as they are in cramped areas and yet maintain good service. This is a deserving shelter. Please please vote for them.

    Pros

helpful knowledgeable staff, care about pets and people

    Cons

need remodel and expansion to accommodate all their services

  • 37. If it wasn't for the Butte Humane Society...

    by: JeronimoRebus

Over the past 20 years of my life a majority of the animals I have ever had as part of my family have come from the Butte Humane Society. My Uncle Dave used to work for the Society and would rescue animals all the time that nobody wanted. So I routinely came upon the same habit, sharing his love for the animals other people discarded without a care. I have had at least five pound puppies and who knows how many cats. I think at one point I even thought of adopting a pair of rabbits. If it wasn't for the animals at the Butte Humane Society I would not have had so much joy in my life to share with them. I have hundreds of stories and thousands of even better childhood memories because of this shelter, it would be a shame if they didn't win the makeover contest.

    Pros

Hundreds of loving animals of all shapes and sizes...

    Cons

In need of more towels and blankets...

  • 38. BHS is AMAZING

    by: tgoland

Prior to coming to Chico, I had never heard of an animal shelter that did not euthanize. Where I am from, the animals are euthanized within 5 days if left unclaimed. I was so surprised by Butte Humane Society's ethics and the compassion that they deliver toward their animals. This place is truly in need of a make-over and well deserves it more than any shelter I have ever been to. The caring and knowledgable staff are very nurturing and eager to help any animal that comes their way.

    Pros

clean facility, caring staff, and non-euthanization

    Cons

lack of space, need for improvement

  • 39. A great little Shelter

    by: realclownlette

This is a good clean shelter, the animals all seem in good health and they are well taken care of. I have adopted from them and they took care to answer any questions I had and when the dog did not work out they took him back with no questions.

    Pros

This is a nice clean little shelter, and the people are helpful.

    Cons

Needs more employees and more kennels

  • 40. Vote Butte

    by: bogner22

Adopting from the Butte Humane Society was an absolutely amazing experience for me. I had to come back about 3 times before I picked out my dog. My dog, Merle, was the absolute best choice I could have made. I've had him for about a year and a half now and wouldn't give him up for the world. The staff was wonderfully helpful and the dogs available were all happy and loving. It made it hard to pick just one. I think this humane society is very deserving of a makeover. It could be a much brighter, lively experience with a new facility. Vote for Butte Humane Society!!!!

    Pros

    staff, animals, location

    Cons

    facility

  • 41. The Staff at BHS

    by: mparachou

I was very impressed by how much the staff cares about their animals. You can see their love and passion towards the animals that are at the shelter. When I adopted my dog Kya (aka. Helga) they interviewed me to make sure she was the right dog for me and to make sure I was the right owner for her.

    Pros

The staff are great and very passionate when it comes to their animals.

    Cons

The shelter is in great need of a make over.

  • 42. a good place to go

    by: obinray

i like going to this shelter, which is unusual, because i generally find them to be a dismal experience. i like the outdoor runs, and have found a perfect fit for our family at that shelter, and i return there anytime i'm looking for another dog.

    Pros

easy to view dogs, very open, helpful staff

    Cons

    too small.

  • 43. How I picked Butte HS to vote for

    by: gunnersbuddy

The rescue I was supporting did not make the top 10 so I looked into each rescue that did in detail to help me make my decision on who to vote for. Butte HS 'for sure' is doing the most with the least. You guys are unstoppable and deserve the makeover the most out of them all. I think you will help more animals than anyone else in the contest if you win. You have all of my votes and good luck. Tracy Cann in Texas

    Pros

    Most deserving of makeover

    Cons

    Needs allot of help

  • 44. thank you

  • 45. Making Dreams Come True!

    by: kacilaura

So many of the animals that the Humane Society has helped would otherwise never have found homes. This shelter helps so many animals' dreams come true, as well as people's dreams. My dream came true when I found my "dream dog" there. I am forever grateful to the shelter for all of the energy and time they invest in helping animals go to loving homes. If it weren't for the Humane Society, so many amazing pets that are alive and loved today would otherwise have never had a second chance! They deserve to win the zootoo makeoever so they can continue their enduring efforts in helping make dreams come true!!!

    Pros

Everyone at the shelter is so dedicated to helping all of the animals (and the people) who come in!

    Cons

The Butte Humane Society is very old and would benefit soo much from some financial help.

  • 46. I adopted my Dog from this Shelter

  • 47. community service hours

    by: jewells

I spent 50 hours of community service hours working at the Butte Humane Society. I had a blast. I love the cats. I held each one as i was cleaning and gave them Love and attention. The staff are high energy and very friendly. There are really kind people who work there. The facility desperateley needs an upgrade to maintain Healthy enviroment. Alot of people donate time and money to help out. I can think of one gal named Judy. She made lots of improvements by buying supplies and just being a really kind influence on others. I would like to go back and volunteer. Please help butte Humane society improve their facilities condition. It deserves it. Even if we don't get this money, there has to be an improvement made for it to continue to provide help to animals and the community.. I applaud its heartfelt effort. It is aa shelter that cares. Julia Sides

    Pros

    Cons

    needs new facility

  • 48. Butte Humane is a loving shelter

    by: SabrinaGirl

Butte Humane Society does the most with very little. I have been there twice to look for my lost cat. Each time, I was impressed by the staff. A few do the work of many. The second time, I came when people were waiting at the desk, the cat boxes needed to be scooped, and it was crazy. Yet, a calm volunteer took the time to walk me quickly through all the cat rooms so I could see if my cat was there. Sadly, she was not, but I could see that if she was lucky enough to ever be brought in there, she would be well cared for. I used to live in southern California, where I have been in many so-called shelters, both public and private. All were appalling. The public shelters suffered from a lack of money and volunteers, high burn out, and apathy frm the community. The private shelters I saw often had lovely facilities and many volunteers, with money coming from private donations, city, county, and state, but were looking for their next victim rather than helping the animals. I don't know where the money was actually going. I saw many people secretly take better care of more animals in their homes than in these places. Butte Humane Society truly is humane. I believe they are a reflection of the caring animal community that exists in Chico. Even though they have a very small, outdated, and totally inadequate facility, they manage to foster a substantial amount of animals. The animals themselves are socialized and happy, something rare in any animal habitat. Their website is first rate. They get pictures of each animal out there in front of the public and have well-written information on each one of them. This shows a very high level of commitment and love.

    Pros

They demonstrate their love for animals by their care

    Cons

BHS is bursting at the seams and needs new everything!

  • 49. They really care!

    by: Besty

The animals are very well cared for. The facility is so old and small, that it is hard to make it look good. At many times there are animals caged in the reception area and outside. The care takers do the very best they can with what is available to them. A lot of the animals come from other shelters in hopes that Butte County Humane Society will find them loving homes. I would like to rate them 5, but because of the above reasons I can't. It is a 5 in regards to how much everyone cares about the fate of each animal. Chico is a small, animal loving town in Northern California. They could sure use your help! Thank you!

    Pros

    Extremely caring!

    Cons

    Old, small, cramped facility!

    by: ldcox

My family and I have visited the Butte Humane Society dozens and dozens of times during the six years we've lived in Chico. My kids and I have visited just to play with the kittens and talk to the dogs; and we've visited to look for a beloved member of our family. We have adopted a Tabby kitten (Calvin) about 6 months ago and an Australian Shepherd Mix (Bandit) a couple of years ago. We have donated items through my daughter's girl scout troop and my 13-year-old son has been doing some volunteering there through BLAST. Although the folks who work/volunteer there are awesome and the animals are great, it is obvious that they are in sore need of funding and donations to allow for nicer and bigger accommodations for the adoptable animals of Chico. Thank you!

    Pros

    Knowledeable, energetic and friendly staff.

    Cons

At times, more help is needed in the main office. Busy is good, though.

    by: jdbanks21

The Butte Humane Society in Chico, Ca is the best shelter I've ever seen! The staff truely care for the animals! The cats and dogs are more friendly and confident compared to other shelters I've been to. I always get my pets here! I adopt with confidence in the animals I am taking home to become a part of my family! I highly reccommend Butte Humane Society to anyone and everyone looking for a new pet to truely become part of the family! Julie F.

Please vote for Butte Humane Society for the Shelter Makeover, they need it bad! All of the staff is very friendly and willing to assist you in any way they possible can. The only service that I have used is microchipping, but they were the cheapest around. From what I have read and heard, they keep surrendered pets until they can find them a home. They really need new facilities to better help the animals and the community.

  • 56. 2 GREAT Dogs Adopted

    by: ophelia906

This shelter is great! My family has adopted 2 fantastic family dogs from here. The first was our first family dog ever. She was the runt of the litter and is now 15 years old. As first-time dog owners, the shelter educated us on everything we'd need and made the adoption process easy and straight-forward. Our second family pup we adopted a few years ago. He was 1 year old when we adopted him and had apparently been at the shelter most of his life. He's a black dog and apparently, despite a wonderful personality, most black dogs are the last to be adopted. This pup, "Buddy", was already trained by the BHS staff to not lick, jump up or chew. He was already potty-trained and is the most obedient and loving dog. The BHS staff did a great job in making Buddy adoptable and we couldn't resist! We will always adopt our pups from Butte Humane Society!

    Pros

Great service, knowledgeable staff, clean animals, quick and easy adoptions

    Cons

Old facilities, not enough room for animals

    by: Calimomof4

I have adopted from Butte Humane Society and unfortunately Ive had to take stray cats in. On both occasions, my experience was very pleasant and they were extremely helpful. I think Butte Humane Society deserves the makeover simply because they turn no animal away! And they are in desperate need of more room, nicer living areas for the animals and a well deserved paint job!!!

    by: Rose54

I've had both good and bad experiences with the shelter. Six years ago I had a Boston Terrier that was a runner, that's why she was sold to me but I didn't understand the full impact of a runner. She'd jump out the window of a moving car. She'd run out the front door while I came in etc. She wouldn't miss an opportunity. The previous owner sold her to me after she jumped out of a two story building and got pregnant by a rotweiller. So the shelter made its share of money from me over this dog through the years. She broke off of her leash while on a walk. I chased after her till I couldn't run anymore. The man in charge of the shelter yelled at me and belittled me in front of customers. I was treated like dirt on a persons shoe and it made me cry. The staff were indifferent too as a result. I was forced to adopt her. I've not had that problem with any other dog. So when she ran again a month later I let her go. I've had Darby for over 7 years he's over 9 years old. I was his third owner and his personality won me over at the shelter. I've been to the shelter this last year with a friend and the people were nice. It's clean but the cats need to be further away from the entrance as their odor can be strong. It's not a 100% no kill shelter as people think. If a dog is sweet natured and friendly but doesn't allow anyone to pet it due to lack of interaction with it, that dog will be put down no matter the temperment or age.

    Pros

    Cons

After volunteering here as a cat cage cleaner, I have found the staff very helpful and friendly. The old facility and the lack of space for all the animals makes the experience less than optimal. All the dogs that have to live outdoors is testimony to the need for more of a building. I would say the staff is doing the best they can with the funds and facility they have.

    by: MattFlammang

BHS is a wonderful organization that really helps out our local furry friends. I have interacted a few times with them during my vet tech education. They really go above and beyond when it comes to animal care. I really hope they win the shelter makeover because they need and deserve it! As of last time I was there they had multiple outdoor pens to house the dogs which were dirt floored. This makes it impossible to disinfect the flooring because you can't disinfect dirt. On top of the elements the dogs may be exposed to pathogens too! They have tried getting the city and counties support, with not a lot accomplished. They have been trying sooooooooo hard to change these situations I hope they can finally succeed! Keep up the awesome work guys!

    Pros

Wonderful staff and a wonderful mission

    Cons

lack of room for all the animals

  • 70. Two Friends

    by: TinaEMT

I adopted two animals from BHS. I adopted my cat Harry on Dec 19, 1992. The staff was very caring and thorough in their questioning of me for Harry's benefit. He was 6 months old and just perfect for me. He was independent but loving. He was truly my best friend until he lost his battle with thyroid cancer Dec 29, 2008. I adopted my dog Cloud on Dec 23, 1998. Again, the staff was not about to let her go until they were sure about me. Unfortunately Cloud was an escape artist for the first couple of years she was with us (over, under, and through our fences). Twice we had to bail her out of "doggie jail" at BHS. Each time we were dressed down by the staff. At the time we were not happy, but upon reflection we understood they wanted to ensure Cloud's safety over our sensitivities. She was a huge part of our lives until she died in Jan 2008. Cloud was my ex-husband's closest buddy and our time with her was so percious. Thank you to BHS. I will come back when I'm ready for a new friend.

    by: HiDebb

Butte Humane Society went the extra mile when we adopted our dog, Sal. If you read the book Marley and Me, Sal was the dog in the first chapter, the wonderful dog. When we went to find a dog, an employee spent at least 30 minutes with us and various dogs, teaching us how to determine a dogs temperment. The result was a great dog for our family. We now have a "Marly", who we love just as much, but Sal had the perfect temperment thanks to the caring of Butte Humane Society.

    by: ggmedia

Chico's Butte Humane Society is made up of the most vibrant and dedicated staff and volunteers I have never witnessed. BHS serves a diverse community of people and animals. The amount of young adults, teens and twenty year olds committed to this shelter is outstanding. Being a college town BHS has a fantastic impact on young people and BHS is a powerful catalyst for community service. These animals come first and it shows. I am proud to be a supporter of BHS!

    Pros

Fabulous animal ethic - truly finding forever homes

    Cons

Facility is in dyer need of repair

  • 84. Great shelter in need of help

    by: taradesoto

This is a great shelter. The people are great and they work very hard to save the lives of many animals. They even take in animals from other shelters that have high kill rates. They are very inspiring to those who want to help and care about animals. The facility is very small though. Half of the kennels are outdoors so the animals are subject to high heat in the summer and wet freezing temperatures in the winter. If they are doing this much to help animals (locally and far away) with the inadequate facilities they have now imagine what they could do with a bigger, more efficient shelter. Please help them out!!

    Pros

Staff, great website, work hard to save lives

    Cons

    THEY NEED HELP

  • 85. Shelter saves condemned animals

    by: mwestbie

College students love animals, at least while they are away from home. Unfortunately, at the end of the Spring semester many pets are abandoned by students returning home for the summer. Butte Humane Society receives those pets and keeps those animals alive to find other homes. In addition, BHS recently rescued several animals from a central valley shelter that has slated them for euthanasia - simply because they were moving to a new location!! The summers in Chico reach over 110 degrees. Dogs should not have to be outside in this heat, even with the igloos provided. This shelter is essential to the surrounding communities and needs room to expand and house needy animals while they await good homes.

    Pros

Great staff, very caring about animals and community

    Cons

Shelter is horribly inadequate for numbers served

  • 95. Butte Humane Society is very good

    by: novia123

I have been to the Butte Humane Society about 5 times over the past 1 1/2 years for various reasons. Twice I brought in two different strays I found, one was seriously injured. The staff carried the injured dog in from my car, had me fill out paperwork regarding him and gave me a case number so I could keep calling for updates on him. When I called, they efficiently gave me the information I needed. They took this dog right to the vet after animal control examined him and gave them permission to take him to the vet, and he was put in antibiotics, pain meds, etc, and hopefully he will be ready to be fostered soon. All this was done on a saturday, when animal control was officially closed, and they had to take him to the emergency vet, whose prices I think must be higher than the regular ordinarily open vet during business times hours. Then once I had to go in the back to look for my dog. In the back where the dogs are housed, I noticed they each had clean water, a blanket and a doghouse. And the same was true of the dogs kept outside in the front of the shelter. I know it takes a lot of work to make sure each dog has these items. I appreciated the low cost vaccination clinic there on a Sunday afternoon, and the man running it was knowledgeable and friendly. Another time, my dog got attacked by another dog in the park, and it was on the weekend so I stopped by the Humane Society to ask questions and the staff was knowlwedgeable about telling me what I had done wrong, and why the other dog had been promotpted to attached my dog. Overall, I really appreciate the butte humane society, because I know their resources are stretched and tight right now, but the people there have taken the time to answer my questions and are knowledgeable.

    Pros

Staff seem genuinely concerned about animals

    Cons

They need more room to house animals!

  • 96. So much with so little

    by: lskatie

Over my 30 years in the Chico area, I have adopted a number of animals (cats and dogs) from Butte Humane. They have always worked so hard to find good homes for their charges. I try to support them in any way I can...were I wealthy, they would be in no need. This facility is so small, old and decrepit. The staff an amazing job at keeping it clean and keeping the animals safe and protected from the elements, but it's an unending battle with vermin and aging buildings. I can't speak highly enough of this facility and its staff.

    Pros

Everyone at the shelter genuinely loves animals and wants to help them in any way they can

  • 99. I don't know how they do it

    by: elcomputo

I don't know how this group manages to maintain itself as a low-kill shelter. There are just so many surrenders and so many strays picked up and unclaimed, I don't know where they put them all. More people need to adopt! It irks me when people purposely fail to get their dogs or cats neutered because they think it's cute to have their pets provide kittens and puppies for their enjoyment. Then they give the puppies and kittens away. There should be a spay and neuter law in Chico that would exempt only people with recognized breeds who plan to run a breeding business (with a license fee to support the shelter). This group works in very crowded conditions because the facility (which appears not to have been designed for the purpose) is much too small. It also works underfunded, as I don't believe the city provides any financial support.

We know why he is name Zippy, becuase he escaped twice to end up back at the shelter, but I do not think he liked it, because he has never ran away again. He might zip down the street, but he always zips right back.

    Pros

The best staff and genuine care of the pets

    Cons

Not enough funds to fix the place up!

  • 102. Great shelter

    by: robinedna

BHS does a lot with what they have in terms of space, staffing, etc. They truly care for the animals and do their best to find homes for them.

    Pros

    Low kill

    Cons

    Lack of space

  • 103. Protect Your Heart

    by: mombraud

I say protect your heart to my girls when we go to volunteer because it's hard enough to know all of these animals have been abandoned and then to see the way they must spend their days. The shelter does it's best with what they have but the animals and staff deserve to much more!

    Pros

Very hard working, dedicated staff and volunteers

    Cons

Shelter conditions, so little to work with.

  • 104. Out Shelter

    by: SatiricSatori

This place is a godsend. It is a low-kill shelter and it takes as many animals as it can hold. None are refused as there are many foster homes in the area.

    Pros

The people genuinely care about the animals

    Cons

they don't have the room for all animals

  • 105. Very careing shelter.

    by: Ramonajoy1

This is a wonderful animal shelter with very careing staff and volunteers. My neighbor just got a dog there and they cannot say enough about this place. Their dog, Weaver, is such a cutie.

    Pros

    Wonderful careing place.

    Cons

    Need lots of repair.

  • 106. The do the best job with so little!

    by: kve46

I've adopted all my animals through Butte Humane Society. They always take the utmost care in ensuring that the adopter is highly qualified. Their staff is knowledgeable and their volunteers are continuously educated through interaction with the full time staff. They are a top rate team with a last rate facility. Albeit the facility is pretty bad they never let it get dirty or in disrepair. I can see they are continuously trying to improve what little they have. They really need this ZooToo thing to come through for them. Thats why I give my full endorsement.

    Pros

Their passion for animals and finding good homes

    Cons

Their facility is garbage! They deserve a better one.

  • 107. i love my pets

    by: momofcbhz

I got my puppy scout there over a year ago and she is the best pet in the world. She came to us with alot of medical problems. Bad skin and she is blind. But I would never trade her in for anything. She is the most loving dog. She is so grateful to have us and we are grateful to have her.

    Pros

    very loving staff

    Cons

    needs to be up graded

  • 108. They need all the help they can get!!!

    by: NordicGoddess

As you can see by the photos, this facility is in dire need of a bulldozer makeover! The building is impossible to sanitize, and heating & cooling issues are a nightmare. During peak animal occupancy, the animalsare crowded and literally stacked upon one another. PLEASE choose this shelter for the makeover. It would not only benifit the animals but the community would take a more involved interest in the animals that need adopted.

    Pros

    Love the animals

    Cons

    Horrible facility

  • 109. Loving staff and volunteers

    by: MorMor87

I have visited this shelter when I'm out in California. They seem to do the best with what they have available, putting the animals 1st. There is a small parking lot, or street parking is also available. Many dogs are housed outside, with runs and dogloos. The indoor public facility has 2 cat rooms and a dog kennel area. The facility seems pretty old and outdated and could really benefit from a makeover.

    Pros

    Really cares about the animals

    Cons

    Needs a makeover

  • 110. Yay!!!

    by: Annafirth

I though it was very well kept looking and if I were looking to adopt the animals were all nicely displayed and cared for. The people are helpful and the shelter is managed quite well.

    Pros

Nice facility and containment of animals among the rooms

    Cons

    none

  • 111. How this place is

This is one example of a shelter which deserves to have a make over...I've been there and have seen the make shift housing for the dogs...they could use so much more to keep up the good work...more shelters should be like this one!! I love the sponsorship program as well...AWESOME!!!!

    Pros

    low kill animal shelter

    Cons

    NEED MORE HOUSING!!!

  • 113. A great place to find a pet.

    by: 3dogday

I love their 'Pitbull Shining Star' program. I have adopted 1 Pit and 1 Pit mix from them and they have been such a blessing in my life. They take dogs with a bad reputation and educate the public on the realities of this breed. There staff is very well versed in all aspects of this breed and of the other animals they have there as well. They do an extensive behavior analysis to best match the pet with the appropriate owner and their lifestyle. They are a wonderful facility and I highly recommend them.

    Pros

They work alot with Pit n Pit mixes

    Cons

I wish they had a thousand acres to do what they do

  • 115. I found the love of my life at this shelter!

    by: jahoovie

I found my Thizzle at the shelter because they have an online photo gallery. He is the most beautiful dog I have ever seen! I want to thank them for not putting him down because he is a pit bull. I couldn't imagine my life without his companionship!! Please let these folks get what they need, because there will always be an animal in need of them and someone like me that may find a diamond in the ruff that will change there life!! And it really is thanks to the folks who do what they do for these poor lost causes and abused animals. I love you guys at the Butee Humane society!!!! Thank you again for my Beautiful Boy, you may remember him as a high strung skinny pitt bill that you named Stanford, with light grey eyes and a white and blue fawn coat with a dark grey patch over his right eye!

    Pros

Thank God for those folks at the shelter for what they do for the animals

    Cons

I hope they get the money that they need

  • 116. BHS saves pets lives

    by: mmeyer14

BHS is located in Chico, Ca. They are a NO kill shelter which means they give these animals as long as possible to find forever homes. They care so deeply for all the animals at the shelter. They try to give the animals one on one bonding and training to help them finds their forever homes. They keep the shelter clean as best to their abilities but it is hard when the shelter is falling apart since it is so old. I do not even know how it is still standing. I have been recently volunteering at the shelter because I want to help the animals. Volunteering here is a wonderful experience for me because I get to play with Dogs and Cats all day! Some of the dogs I have been spending time with are so sweet and loyal I am amazed people over look these good dogs. Go to BHS and take a look for yourself, these animals deserve a second chance for a happy life.

    Pros

  • 119. BHS!

    by: CHALAGI

I think this shelter and the personnel/volunteers who make it work every day are providing an integral role in the lives of the animals that reside there. The shelter role is seemingly a difficult transition phase for all parties, and I'm thankful for its existence. These animals deserve to be taken care of! It is not their fault that their human caretakers cannot or will not provide for them. Thank you BHS for your continued advocation for our local animal population!

    Pros

    No kill shelter

    Cons

    Overcrowded/outdated

  • 120. Struggling humane society

  • 121. Our Shelter Rocks!

    by: bellestarrgang

I have worked in animal rescue for many years, in direct contact with shelters all over Northern California & Arizona. I have never worked with a staff that cares more than the staff at BHS. They move heaven & earth for the animals in their charge. They have turned this shelter into one our community can be proud of. Here's a small example of the dedication they show every day, one of the shelter employees offered to care for a little elderly Maltese in her own home until it could get into rescue. The dog needs medical care throughout the day. Thank you, Katie!! And thanks to all the staff for keeping the shelter clean, the animals socialized, and for educating the public effectively.

This is a great organization an with little help I think they could full fill their purpose. This help must come from many place and includes more then just money and donations, although those always help. ;). People in the community need to stand up and go help. It would be great experience for family's to get together and do something good for the community or for troubled teenagers. Lets all get together and make a real difference in our community.

We love our cat and we love Butte Humane Society for helping us find someone to love.!

  • 126. This place is great

    by: vekpos

This place is great. They don't just help dogs and cats. They have guinea pigs, they have roosters, they've had pigs before, they get squirrels a lot and help send them to bidwell wildlife rehabilitation, they have rabbits, they have rats, not to mention the occasional kitties and doggies! They are great. They are helpful, knowledgeable and dedicated. They can't make that much money, and they work their hearts out anyway. Look up dedication in the dictionary, and I'll be damned if I don't see their smiling faces there. Please, everyone do what you can to help this struggling facility help its community and continue to give splendid service and care for the animals here.

  • 127. Important Shelter

    by: stmcreynolds

This humane society is very important to our community. As an example, our Northern California area experienced wide spread wildfires during summer 08'. Many families had animals escape, had to turn their pets in because of lost homes, etc. The Butte Humane Society performed excellently however the facilities are in desperate need of updating. A makeover would make this facility much better. Please help our community.

    Pros

    Support for local animals

    Cons

Very old and services should be updated

  • 136. Adopting Stella

    by: davisdo

We adopted Stella on February 12, 2008 from the Butte Humane Society, and we have been extremely happy with our decision. Stella is a mix of wire-haired dachsund, pomerian and Cairn terrier. She has a lively, sweet, and loving personality, and she has become the "darling" of our household...even our 4 cats adore her!! We have MANY friends who would love to dognap Stella from us... Since our adoption of Stella, we have visited dog shelters throughout Northern California, looking for a playmate for her, and a pet for a friend. We quickly noticed the difference between our local shelter and others in the state; Butte Humane Sociey desperately needs a makeover to adequately and safely house the many beautiful pets that they save regularly. Prior to our adoption of Stella, we had always purchased our dogs as puppies from private sources. Our adoption of Stella has changed our minds regarding dog shelters and rescue, and now we have become HUGE advocates of adopting pets from shelters Butte Humane Society's staff made the selection of a pet and the adoption process easy for a first-timer...we regularly check their website for possible new additions to our family!!

    Pros

We found a dog we LOVE on our first visit to the shelter.

    Cons

Many of the dogs are housed outside in pens due to limited space.

  • 137. Needs inside space for doggies!!

    by: tinamari

I recently went here to look for a missing pet and was upset that the doggies have to sleep outside in cages. The staff was so helpful and friendly, but they need more money so they can get the dogs inside!

    Cons

    doggies outside

  • 139. Great Place to Adopt

    by: boyelektric

I just adopted a black tabby from this place on 2/20/09 and I must say it was a good experience. While the place is relatively small for the number of animals that it has the staff is friendly and you can tell they care a lot for the animals. I would definitely adopt from them again in the future.

    Pros

    Wonderful Animals, Knowledgable Staff, Friendly

    Cons

Customer Service could be a little better. No Vet on hand

  • 140. Above and beyond the call!

    by: freestep

I have worked with Butte Humane Society through many changes in staff, and in my opinion, their current staff is the best they have had in 20 years. They are extremely proactive in their efforts to rescue and adopt out animals in need, and will do the utmost to provide their charges with the best quality of life possible while they wait for their forever home. Butte Humane Society goes the extra mile to provide homeless pets with needed veterinary care, socialization, grooming, and training in order to make them more adoptable. The staff shows an unmatched level of devotion to animals and all they need is a new and updated facility to take it to the next level!

    Pros

Fantastic staff goes the extra mile for pets

    Cons

they could use a new, updated facility

  • 141. Got our new best friend

    by: hightower523

We adopted our little girl "Jasmine" at the BHS. The adoption process was thorough yet quick. We came up from Sacramento to check out their dogs and fell instantly in love with our collie/german shepherd mix. We visited the shelter before and each time we have been there the staff always greeted us with a smile and a desire to help us find the right animal. We are already looking at adopting a cat from the Butte Humane Society.

    Pros

Prompt, friendly and they want to help you!

    Cons

Facility is in need of an upgrade

  • 142. nothin' but BHS love!

    by: amandalouise86

I help out with BHS events. Most recently was our annual Valentine's Day Dinner. It was *AMAZING*! One of the fund raisers of the night was a cake auction. One of the cakes went for $675!! Granted, I'm sure it was delicious, but I think that eating it know what a good cause it's going to is far more delicious than the flavor itself. The generosity of our community almost brought me to tears numerous times throughout the night. It was a lot of fun and great to be a part of something so positive and selfless!

    Pros

incredibly friendly and caring staff, supported locally

    Cons

    needs a makeover (hint, hint)

  • 144. Making Families Happen :)

    by: Mtownzen

The Butte Humane Society is a wonderful organization that has a core group of dedicated volunteers and staff. All the animals are very well cared for and adoption placement is a priority. Overall, my experience at the Butte Humane Society was very positive. The volunteers and staff members were knowledgeable, kind and patient with my questions and concerns. I adopted a beautiful 6 month old black lab named Pixie and I know I can count on the Butte Humane Society for continued support during Pixie's "teenage" years. The Butte Humane Society also provided 30 days of free health care, a free health check/exam with the local Animal clinic of my choice, a free microchip from 24petwatch and a free pet wash. A complete pet history was also provided. The Butte Humane Society is outstanding at placing the right animals with the right families. Put simply, they make families happen! Sincerely, Michael Townzen Chico, CA

    Pros

Great Volunteers, Outstanding Staff, Placement of the right animal with the right family is a priority. Continued animal support and tons of freebies!

  • 146. The most deserving animals and shelter

    by: JanelleMcMurdie

I volunteered as a foster for the Butte Humane Society for 3 years and loved not only every minute with the animals, but the staff at Butte Humane and the board of directors. They are a dedicated group of individuals who give their all for the animals. I learned so much while working with them and discovered what a self-less act caring for animals can sometimes be.

    Pros

Genuine care for animals and their welfare

    Cons

Facility that makes a difficult job even harder

  • 147. A cramped shelter with lots of heart

    by: lechinchay

Butte Humane Society is a very good shelter. The staff and volunteers are great. The facility itself is left wanting though. The grounds are cramped and the outside areas definitely need some help. The grassy area for the dogs is in need of attention. I am sure it is a budget issue. Even though the shelter is cramped, there is lots of room for love!

    Pros

    Staff are very helpful

    Cons

    cramped quarters

  • 148. It's for the Animals

    by: Mom2Buddy

I've been a volunteer for about 6 months now. I like the events the best, especially when I can be a dog handler. The dogs are so much different when they're away from the shelter. I'd like to take them all home with me, but I promised my boyfriend I wouldn't adopt any more dogs right now. Butte Humane Society has done a lot with the resources they have and the community does all it can to help. They work very hard at finding new homes for the dogs at the shelter. I'm proud to be a volunteer there.

    Pros

They really care about the animals

    Cons

They're really in need of more space and more updated facilities

  • 149. Great people working hard

    by: RagnaRocker

I love this place, I just started volunteering and the staff couldn't be more helpful. The animals are well cared for and loved and everyone works really hard to make sure the animals are in a safe, comfortable and clean environment. They staff works really hard all day, I can't believe how dedicated these people are. I seriously haven't seen some people sit down for days, lol, they must crash pretty hard after work. They're all super nice, helping everyone who comes in to the utmost of their abilities. The animals might be in a shelter, but they really are lucky to have these people. I also like how they really review the potential adopters to make sure the animals are going into a good environment, and they aren't afraid to tell people that they just aren't ready to adopt if it looks like they can't handle it.

    Pros

    Caring, knowledgeable plesant staff

    Cons

They definatly need some more funding for repairs

  • 150. We've Adopted Here

    No-Kill Shelter

    Cons

    Hmmmm...

  • 151. Help for Butte Humane

    by: Kklesch

When walking around at the Butte Humane Society, the first thing you notice is the outdoor kennels. Winter time is very cold and these poor dogs have shelter but no warmth. There is no where for the workers to house these animals indoors and so they are left outside. The workers do their best giving blankets and such but I'm sure they are still freezing. Staff is also so stretched out, I wonder if the dogs get a walk or get out to play. It must be so hard for those people who want the best for these poor animals but do not have the resources they need. In these tough economic times, it is sad that these animals will be put on the back burner as people are having a hard time just feeding their families. Most of the animals were clean, the enclosures were clean and the inside was clean. With the limited resources they have, it is a miracle they are able to do as much as they do. God Bless the Butte Humane Society. We pray that they are able to get this makeover so they are able to help even more animals in our area. We are a small town as compared to other cities but we seem to have a huge problem with more unwanted animals every year. We need more help in getting people to spay their animals to help reduce the problem.

    Pros

    Clean enviroment

    Cons

    Very crowded

  • 152. Little Shelter... Big Heart

    by: DaniGirl

The Humane society is a wonderful place. They are so compassionate towards the animals they serve that they take the time to write a personal story about each of the animals, they are always watching for animals in need, and they're very good at placing the animals in the homes they deserve.

    Pros

staff, animals, application process, compassion for animals

    Cons

    facility is small

  • 153. Caring

    by: Wells

The butte humane society has a caring dedicated staff and volunteers. They do the best that they can with what they have. The shelter really needs to be updated and I am hoping that they will get enough points to be able to get the chance at getting a makeover for the shelter. They really need it. I took in a pet that I could not longer keep in my home and they took excellent care of her while I filled out the paperwork and they even made her feel comfortable and held her. It made me feel really good knowing that they actually care about the animals. I knew she was going to be alright. They even kept me updated on her status. She went to a rescue that sets the dog up with a person who has lost a loved one. I think that is great. Thanks all of you at the butte humane society in Chico.

    by: sirronej

This shelter deals with a high volume of lost and unwanted pets. Being located in a college town, you get alot of irresponsible pet owners. I have to commend thier staff and volunteers alike at how well they deal with the influx of animals. I have friends that would go no where but here to find their new fmialy companion.

    Pros

    No Kill Shelter

    Cons

    Too many outdoor kennels

    by: Kelsey20

Butte Humane society is a great humane society it has been there for lets just say a few years times a few. anyways the staff is great the animals are well behaved and all loved and walked and fed and played with all the time. Although all of these things are great they need a little help, i think it would be great if they won the makeover becasue they could expand opening more room for more animals, and for a better shelter. butte humane society is a great shelter that me and my mom volunteeer at as often as we can! Butte Humane society is already a great shelter but if they had the million dollar makeover they could make improvments and mbuild a whole new shelter!!

    by: DanielleNoel

My experience with the Butte Shelter was incredible. They really took the time to help me in adopting Cooper (previously Hampton). The staff was very friendly and obviously cared for the animals they were helping. It was by far the best shelter I have been to beacuse they take the time to make sure the pet is a good match for you. I highly recommend them!

    Pros

Very helpful, friendly and knowledgable staff. The shelter was clean and efficiently run. The staff knew the animals well.

    Cons

    Busy on Sat.

    by: bhsvolunteer

What BHS lacks in space and funds, it does its best to make up for w/ a HUGE heart. In the past ten years, first as a volunteer, and now as a staff member, I have seen this shelter and organization go through SO much... from abysmal conditions, staff turnover (and over and over), near-bankruptcy, public outcry, and the myriad results of decades of mismanagement and neglect... and against all odds this place has persevered, cleaned up its act, became a low-kill shelter, made HUGE improvements in so many areas of care and organization, gathered many knowledgeable and devoted staff and volunteers, and now is finally getting to the level of success and recognition that BHS deserves. The animals are not only given food, water, shelter, and medical attention, they are LOVED. Staff and volunteers work daily to socialize and work on any training/behavioral issues. The thorough adoption process ensures that the adopter and animal are a great match, and that these animals will continue to have a happy, healthy life in their next home. By rescuing animals from other shelters, we give even more second chances. The growing Outreach and Humane Education program educates others on the joys and responsibilities of pet ownership, as well as the realities of sheltering and pet overpopulation. Though there are still many improvements to be made, not the least of which is housing, BHS is dedicated to making the next 100 years our best yet.

    Pros

Great animals, dedicated staff & volunteers, getting better every day!

    Cons

Needs more space, money & friends!

  • 159. What we don't have in money, we've sure got in heart!

    by: lieberhund

My favorite thing about BHS is that everyone there is looking out for the animals first. We all strive to not only take the best care of our residents as we can (given our ancient facility and poor funding), but we work to ensure that the critters find the best and most ideal homes possible. Every day the shelter is getting better... we keep making do with the resources we've got! Love to the animals! Lindsey Lieberhund Dog Training

    Pros

    Caring, motivated staff

    Cons

    Not enough funding!!

  • 160. Lot's of Of love in This Shelter

    by: Ahenry211

I love our Shelter. I adopted a young dog here originally named Collar, I changed her name to Riley since she was young and could handle the change. Collar was in very sad shape at the time I got her, she had a form of mange and was mostly blind, but everyone at this shelter loved her to death! Everyone there took such special care of this wonderful dog she was lucky to be alive when I had found her. She was about three months old when I got her, she is now 2 years old. She hasn't lost her hair in a year and a half and has mapped out our hour perfectly to be her own play pin. She is the happiest dog in the world all because this shelter saved her. Thank you for giving me a blessing of a dog!

  • 164. the more the merrier

    by: kittycraze

Though I visit the humane society, on average, only once a year, I always go through the same emotions. The first being: wow, it's more than slightly dirty in that cage. The second is feeling sorry for all the animals, who are so cute and have no home yet; you can tell even the dogs able to run around outside all day are lonely for a real home. But then I see the people working there–working their buts off–and I realize that they are loyal to the inhabitants and care very much, and I know they do the best they can on a fairly tight budget. Which is why they deserve to win this thing; the more money they have, the better care they can take of all the animals. The more the merrier.

    Pros

    Nice people

    Cons

    not the cleanest

  • 165. Highly recommended!

    by: sxiong00

Staff is wonderful! They are knowledgeable and take good care of the animals there. I also love their website, especially their descriptions of the animals available for adoption! That shows me that they took time to get to know each animal there. It also helped me find an animal that would fit our lifestyle. We got our dog, Koala, from them and she was treated very well! I felt they knew a lot about her and cared about her very much!

    Pros

Staff is great! Website is nice!

    Cons

    Cons

The shelter can use more space although they make good use of what they do have it would help to have a lot more.

We just adopted our dog from here and we could not have been happier. They allowed us to take her out several times to play and answered all of our questions (we had a lot). The staff was friendly and dedicated to their job. Their primary concern is that all of these animals find a good home. Thanks!

    Pros

Lots of dogs and cats to pick from

    Cons

    Under-staffed

  • 169. Best animal shelter yet!

    by: CorinneSchneider

The Butte Humane Society is really good to the animals. They always have pets in mind and try to do everything to keep animal(s) alive. They also have a low kill policy. (YAH!!!!!!) If I was an animal, and was lost, I would definitely want to come here! There prices are reasonable. They could really use this makeover, though, to help fix up the outside cages, pay off any debt, get the cats treated, and to just fix up the building. I REALLY HOPE THEY WIN!!!!!!!!

    Pros

friendly service, great prices, very good staff, they keep pets in mind, have a low kill policy(YAY!)

    Cons

most cats have resperatory disease, outside cages are.... kind of poor

I love this place and this is why I am going to volunteer for them. They care about their animals and are always greatful for a donation. It seems like all their animals are very well socialized. Also, you can visit an animal and talk to anyone about that animal. I love their website and believe that they really work hard on getting their animals adopted to good homes.

  • 172. I love this place!

    by: thanksBHS

I really love this place. I've been volunteering here for a breif period and I never would have predicted I would be enjoying myself this much. I can't believe how sweet all the animals are. I've been in nearly every cage and kennel and have yet to be growled at one single time.\nI don't understand how this random sampling of dogs some of which come from very troubled backgrounds, can not contain a single bad apple or grumpus. But I'm certainly not complaining!\nAlso the fact that this place sees euthanasia as a last resort for hopeless individuals rather than a convenience or money saving tool is extra heart warming.\nLet's win that makeover!

    Pros

Caring knowledgeable staff, clean facility, LOW KILL!!

    Cons

    Needs a million dollar makeover

They are both such great resources for information on caring for and training your pet. They have taught me so much. Jen has gone above and beyond the scope of her daily work, regularly bringing the neediest of pet to heal in their apartment. Say Hi and Thank You to Jennifer next time your there!

  • 176. Love the Humane Society

    by: Chuffster

I absolutely love the Butte Humane Society in Chico, CA. Without them I never would have had my first dog, Holly, who sadly passed away 4 years ago. She was a German Shepherd/Rotty mix, and lived to be 14. The Butte Humane Society took excellent care of her before we took her home. You can tell by the way the animals respond to the staff that they are well cared for and happy animals. The only complaint I have about the Butte Humane Society is they don't know different animal breeds very well. But that is neither here nor there.

    Pros

    passionate staff. happy animals.

    Cons

staff needs to learn more about animal breeds.

BHS is a great shelter. We lost our cat a couple years ago and they were very helpful as we checked in repeatedly to see if he had been found. Whenever we get a dog or another cat we will definitely adopt from the shelter!

    Pros

    Cons

    under-funded, needs upgraded

  • 178. Butte Humane Society is the BEST!

    by: lsaldano

This humane society is just that, humane. They do all in their power to give the animals their dignity while waiting for their forever home. With the cold winters, this place really needs a better facility to care for the big dogs that have to remain in the outdoor pens. A makeover would be a blessing as it runs on donations from the community. I've adopted a dog and a cat from BHS and they have been well loved additions to our family! No worries about having to spay or neuter as both were taken care of for me! I love BHS! Good Luck!

    Pros

    Clean, Friendly, Loving Placements

    Cons

Need more room, and a makeover!

  • 179. Thanks to Butte County Humane Society

    by: nagchampa

We've adopted 2 puppies from this shelter since we've moved here, and they're great companions! We couldn't have asked for sweeter dogs! And we've been through the foster program as well. It's a very busy place - sometimes TOO busy for their small space - and the staff obviously cares about the animals there. The more I learn about BHS the more I like them! The staff and volunteers have so much to do! We even go visit the big dogs just to say "hi".

    Pros

    Caring staff, great programs

    Cons

    Old drafty buildings

  • 181. Little Shelter with a BIG heart

    by: Teelaaz

The Butte Humane Society in Chico, California is a perfect example of people doing everything they can for animals on a shoestring budget. The building and outdoor kennels are old and many of the kennels need new fencing. The Shelter relies on the community for alot of the benefits they recieve. College students recently built roofs over several of the outdoor kennel blocks to provide shade in the blistering hot summers. Boy Scouts powerwashed, and re-painted the front and side of the building giving it a much more inviting appearance. And there is a never ending stream of volunteers who feed, clean, walk and play with the animals to keep them happy and well socialized during their stay at the shelter.\r\nWhile I was volunteering there last summer I was amazed at the number of cats and dogs they were able to place! They have such a great success rate that they are often able to rescue animals from other overcrowded shelters where they were running out of time. I can't say enough nice things about the shelter and I hope hope hope, they win the makeover contest, because I really think they deserve it.\r\n

    Pros

    Low Kill Shelter, Great Volunteers

    Cons

Facilities are old and in need of repairs

  • 185. Butte Humane is the best :]

    by: Wolfblane

BHS is by far, the best humane society ever! If it weren't for them, and their countless volunteers, I would have left Chico long ago. I love BHS! Though I hope the day will never come, if I have to give up a pet, I'd hand it over to BHS. They'd take the best care of it, and I honestly believe they NEED and highly deserve to get a makeover.\n\n(Maybe Ty from Home Makeover or whatever will be there! Lol)

    Pros

They keep it as clean as possible, and take good care of the pets

    Cons

    There aren't enough supplies!

  • 186. Best Cat Ever Came from BHS

    by: HuttonZ

I'm a Boy Scout who was helping work on an Eagle Scout project to help the shelter. One day I went into one of the cat rooms to see if there was any projects to do in there and Simeon picked me. He just came over and curled up in my lap and that was that. My mom liked him too, so we took him home and he's the most awesome cat. He sleeps in my room and likes to follow us around like a dog.\r\nI'm so glad I looked in the cat room that day, and it felt really good to be able to help at the shelter and see lots of other dogs and cats find new homes. I hope that this shelter wins the makeover because even with all the work that volunteers do, it still needs alot of work.

    Pros

The mostly volunteer staff really cares.

    Cons

Facilities are old and need alot of repairs

  • 187. Good place and Much Needed

    by: itzachance

I really wish the local government would make the animal shelter more of a priority in Chico. Animals are more important than art. We need funds badly. Everyone who donates and works here are saints. They do all they can to help and provide for these beautiful animals.

    Pros

Much needed shelter in Chico, no kill

    Cons

Needs to be updated, and upgraded

  • 188. They do their best

    by: leemarie

As with any shelter that is dependent on outside funding, BHS does the very best it can. It simply needs more room in the reception area and better housing for the animals. Both will be remedied when it wins the makeover!

    Pros

they really care about their animals

    Cons

    they need more room

  • 189. The Best Humane Society Ever

    by: GoChitties

The Butte Humane Society of Chico is a great shelter. It is very, very well-kept, has great service, and are eager to know the statistic's of every animal's well-being. The society makes sure their staff and the volunteers, like myself and friends, know how to speak up if something is off with an animal, how to treat them, and whatever they can do to help. The society takes great care in choosing every animal's future. They want their customers to be happy, and they want the pets to be happier. I personally got one of my cats from the Butte Humane Society and to this day, she is one of the best cats I've ever hoped to own. To think she was a stray from a very caring shelter... I know my cat well, and I know if she wasn't rescued by this shelter, she wouldn't be here today. I give all my thanks to this shelter. I hope you do the same.

    Pros

the staff are there to help you and are well aware of that fact, the animals are truly angels in disguise, and the place is well-kept

    Cons

most of the staff have tattoos, and/or piercings in places other than their ears if that bothers you

I had to fill out a long adoption form and bring my other dog back to make sure they would get along! this was so responsible on the shelters part. I wish I could give them more!!

  • 191. Good shelter but underfunded

    by: porcelaintiger

I adopted my dog Tiger Lily from the shelter a couple of years ago. I think that recently there have been a lot of changes that positively impact the shelter. However the shelter is inadequate when it comes to the number of animals and the number of people that come through the doors each day, its time for that to change also!

    Pros

Try their best to help animals and people

    Cons

    Shelter is falling apart

  • 192. Needs some work

    by: caliclia

The Butte Humane Society is the group I took Skipper to to get his micro chip. While the price was awesome (thank you!) the people were so cold. I was also very afraid he was going to get an infection as it didn't appear the girl that was helping me sterilized anything. He did seem to get a fever for a few days but it went away quickly so I did not worry too much. However it is something I would suggest working on.\n\nSecondly, my husband and I went to the shelter to find a friend for Skipper and were really upset at the way the kitty sections were. They seemed to be in serious disrepair and they smelled! I know having that many cats in one place is difficult to cut down on smell, but the cats even looked ragged, pretty much all of them needed a bath.\n\nSome of these things may have changed since last time I was there, but that is what I remember when I was there earlier this year.

    Pros

    Quick service

    Cons

Cat area was dirty, cats unclean, micro-chip may have been dirty

  • 194. I love BHS!

    by: skwinter

Butte Humane Society is such a treasure to our community. My family has adopted four cats, a dog, and today a rabbit over the last five years. These pets came to us in great health, well loved, and ready for our family.\nThe staff is ridiculously overworked and in a location that doesn't support the quality work they perform daily. I am constantly amazed that they are able to do so much with so very little.\nButte Humane Society takes many animals from high-kill shelters all over California. This invaluable act, as well as their constant work for loving and humane animal treatment is precisely why BHS should continue to be a vital partner in our community.

    Pros

    Wonderfully caring staff

    Cons

    Lack of space

  • 195. Great Community shelter

    by: Tiffbasil

Staff was selective in adoptive parents, yet made it easy to bring your new pet to a great home. Also, they have $20 kitty saturdays, with buy one get one free. I think this is a good thing because not only does it allow for more kittens to be adopted but it also promotes companionship for them. Overall, the Butte Humane Society has a good reputation in a small community and is well supported.

    Pros

Very helpful, able to bring home pet same day!

    Cons

Needs more space and updated kennel facilities

  • 196. A great service for Butte county Animals

    by: angelag86

In March of 2008 I came to Butte Humane Society to adopt a dog for my adult sister. We found the perfect dog, a little Brittany spaniel mix named Leslie (now named Lizzy, as it was easier for my sister to pronounce). Lizzy is honestly one of the best dogs I have met, and we are so happy to have given her a loving home. She was rescued by BHS from a high kill shelter, and it breaks my heart to think that she may have been killed if BHS hadn't found her.\r\nIt is hard to find someone at BHS to help you, and some of the workers are abrasive at best, but from what I understand these are volunteers. I appreciate what they do, and if that means I have to wait an extra 15 minutes for something, then I'll wait. \r\nMany of the kennels have multiple dogs in them, and while they are mighty stinky, they have been clean (no poo) every time I've been there. \r\nMy Father in Law is currently looking for a small dog, so we have been visiting their website and the shelter pretty frequently. I appreciate that they post their dogs online, and do in-depth attitude evaluations on them. It is very helpful when choosing a new member of the family.\r\nI recommend the shelter to everyone I know that is looking for a pet. They are really doing a great service there, and the shelter deserves to be recognized.\r\n

    Pros

low kill, rescues animals from other shelters

    Cons

dirty and understaffed (this is why it needs a makeover!)

  • 197. Sandy dog...

    by: leedash

We had our 15 yr. old australian shepherd put down in Feb. 2007. In Dec. 2007 we were ready to adopt another dog. We went to the shelter and the manager, Kim Thompson, helped us pick out a dog she felt would be a good companion. We ended up with Sandy, a beautiful 3 yr. old shepherd/collie mix...even though she looks like a golden retriever with short ears. She has brought such joy to my husband and I. Sandy came to us very well trained, sweet temperment, friendly and loveable. She loves our two cats, and they love her. We told Kim we wanted an older dog..no puppy, who was at least housebroken and we are so happy she is everything we wanted and more. After a year, it seems like Sandy has been part of the family for years. Our experience at the Butte Humane Society was excellent and we recommend anyone looking for a pet to try there first. Thank you for our beautiful Sandy dog. The Shaffer's

    Pros

  • 198. Butte Humane Society thank you!

    by: danielled77

I adopted our beloved pup Lola from the Butte Humane Society. She was there for 3 months and we were lucky that she was still there by the time we were looking. The staff are so dedicated to the animals- there are so many animals kept here- and so much work to be done. To go in there, you know that they are incredibly busy and you need to be patient if you want to adopt a pet. It is quite a process, to meet a pet, to fill out the paperwork, to make sure the future pet has all of the appropriate paperwork, shots, etc. But they made sure the animals are taken care of. Thank you Butte Humane Society for all of your hard work and care!

    Pros

They deeply care about the animals

    Cons

There are too many animals to care for.

We got our pitbull at Butte Humane Society a few months ago. We love him. He is a great dog.\n\nThe guy who helped us handle him was great. He told us about the breed and let us play with him. It was a really nice way to see the dog away from the cages.\n\nThe only bad thing was when we filled out the paper work and waited in line for an hour, the girl behind the counter said they were not going to have time to process our adoption. We had to return the next day. That wouldn't have been that big of a deal, it is just that we live an hour away.

My boyfriend and i went to the shelter to adopt a puppy or older dog to raise with our son adn the staff was not very helpful. The dogs all looked sick and hungrey and some of the pitbulls looked like they were getting beat. I thought that a shelter would be a good place to get a dog but not this one. we still have yet to get a dog because we really want to adopt one

    Pros

    Several animals to choose from

    Cons

    staff very rude

  • 203. Wonderful Shelter

    by: stephanie08

My family and I adopted a cat from the Butte Humane Society about 10 years ago and she has been one of the most wonderful pets we have ever had. The staff was great when it came to helping us choose the right cat. I also volunteer there and feel that the staff is great and have a true love for these animals in need of help.

    Pros

Great staff and volunteers, Caring people

    Cons

    Old Facility

  • 204. Loving Help to Animals

    by: Dadalt

Butte Humane Society is a very clean, low kill facility. All of the staff really cares for all of the animals that are brought in. They do their best with what they have but they need so much more. I love being able to help in any way that I can, knowing that it might bring comfort to the animals.

    Pros

Staff really cares and loves the animals. Great customer service.

    Cons

    Facility needs lots of repairs.

  • 205. Butte Humane Society Community pillar

    by: Melody09

In past years I've visited Butte Humane Society many times, to drop off strays or adopt the occasional pet and I was never disapointed in the staff's comitment to the animals in their care or to helping lost pets get home or find new ones. Though under-funded and sometimes overwhelmed by the amount of animals in their care (they are a low-kill shelter) they work tirelessly with volunteers to help the animals get the attention and care they need until they can be found new homes. I'm a big fan of Butte Humane Society!

    Pros

Staff are kind and generous, they care alot about the community and animals in it

    Cons

Butte is under paid and sometimes overwhelmed

  • 206. Warm Loving Environment For People and Animals

    by: jaymeerickson782

This is a wonderful place. I adopted my netherland dwarf bunny from Butte Humane Society. He was well taken care of and happy when I brought him home. They have a large volunteer staff that really care about animals and do their best to take care of them. The staff knows a lot and has the animals best interests in mind when they try to adopt them out. I would recommend them to anyone who would like to adopt.

    Pros

They treat their animals like they are a part of a family.

    Cons

    They don't have enough resources.

  • 207. Once upon a kitty tail

    by: lnk1998

I have been a Butte Humane Society supporter for the 11 years I have lived in Chico. We have adopted 3 cats in that time. All have been wonderful family members! \r\nOnce our cat CR was missing for 11 days, we had thought the worse. On day 11 we went back to the shelter and there he was. He had been hit by a car and had been in the hospital for 10 days and had just been transfered to the shelter. They were taking great care of him!\r\nThank you for helping our little lost kitty come home!\r\nEveryone there was so wonderful!!!

    Pros

    low to no kill shelter

    Cons

limited room and funds for programs and animals

  • 208. Love BHS!

    by: ChicoAnimalLover

I love to come with my sister and my mom when they go to volunteer. I really just like to see the kitties, but the dogs are nice too. They really love the animals at BHS. We also got our Great Pyreneese from BHS.

    Cons

  • 209. Great Non-Profit Shelter

    by: gunstreetgirl

This is a great shelter with a dedicated staff in a city with more than it's share of unwanted pets and illigitamate breeders.

    Pros

The staff is truely dedicated to the care of animals

    Cons

The shelter sorely needs a makeover

  • 210. I found a great little friend

    by: kaiyamarin

I just adopted a kitten from this shelter over the weekend. The experience was great, and I am looking forward to many great years with my new little friend!

    Pros

    Knowledgeble staff

    Cons

old building, doesn't seem to fit their needs

  • 211. Great Shelter Needs Help

    by: SolidE

This shelter tries so hard and makes the best out of what they have. They challenges they face might have overcome them if it weren't for the dedication and care of the people there. It is evident that they've been able to stretch every resource to create a place where second chances can lead to miracles. I am proud to see their dedication to being a no-kill shelter. I only wish we all took our cues from them and pushed our limited resources to do more for these great animals.

    Pros

Great Staff, wonderful place, caring workers

    Cons

    Limited resources

  • 212. BHS

    by: lizalots

I adopted one of my two dogs from the BHS. I saw him on their website and fell in love instantly. They made sure that he would be adopted into a family that would be appropriate for him and the adoption process went very smooth. \r\n\r\nI've found two dogs on the side of 99, and was able to get one of them back to their owner and the other adopted to a new home all with the help of BHS.

    Pros

They are open every day of the week. No kill shelter.

    Cons

Only can take dogs from Chico.

  • 213. A bit crowded...

    by: meveronica

I went to go there to possibly adopt a new family member and I waited so long to get help because there were so many people there. I wasn't sure who was in front of me. The staff didn't either. They could use a better system when dealing with a large crowd. It was nice that they had updated books with large pictures to show off all the animals. Thoes pictures also contained lots of information on each animal. I did end up adopting :).

    Pros

    Friendly to animals

    Cons

too many people so you don't really get noticed

  • 214. Got the best dog in the world here

    by: brodysmommy

I love Butte Humane Society. What a great service to the community. We adopted our dog there 3 years ago and he is the most incredible dog I have owned in my lifetime. The people were very helpful and what a great deal. You cannot beat the price for the services provided with adoption i.e. spay/neuter, microchip, shots, vet exam and a wonderful family member. We try to donate when we can so that the shelter can operate at its best potential and more people can enjoy finding a forever pet and family member from the shelter.

    Pros

No Kill Shelter, Clean, Helpful, Caring

    Cons

Not every employee knows the personality of every dog

  • 215. save a life, be loved forever

    Cons

    so few!

  • 216. butte humane society facility

    by: sandysfriend

I think the staff do the best they can given the facility. I know they work with the animals and try to meet their individual needs. The facility is old and small. The holding area for strays is mostly makeshift but they try to keep it secure and safe. There is little room for outdoor exercise, especially an area that is protected from the weather. Many of the dogs have to be outside 24/7 no matter what the weather and it can be very hot here and quite cool in the winter. As I said, I feel the staff does the best they can considering what they have to work with.

    Pros

    caring staff and volunteers

    Cons

    old faciltiy

  • 217. In need of a Bigger Shelter

    by: aquarius23

This shelter is great and everyone that works there is wonderful. But it is in great need of having a bigger building!!!!!

    Pros

    The Shelter is very Small!!!

    Cons

    Overrun with animals!!!!

  • 218. Big heart

    by: missmackell

This shelter has helped me on so many occasions. When I found my baby kitty alone, scared, dirty, and severely emaciated the Butte Humane Society was able to help me find the perfect vet office to fix my kitty! Over the next few years I have found other animals in need of a loving place and I have always brought them to the knowledgeable and loving Butte Humane Society. Their staff is always helpful and their hearts are so full of love. The only thing this shelter needs is a bigger space to accommodate the large amount of animals they bring in. Over the summer they were able to save a big group of dogs from a high kill shelter. Please help this place out!

    Pros

    Best staff

    Cons

    Not big enough!

  • 219. Friendly shelter

    by: Reggae69

The shelter building is small and can be very crowded. The staff is always helpful and very busy! The parking lot is small, but street parking is available as well. Many dogs are housed in outdoor covered runs, with individual dogloos.\r\n\r\nEveryone here is very caring and this shelter is very deserving of any assistance. A makeover could work wonders for this facility and help further its outreach to the community.

    Pros

    Very caring

    Cons

Sometimes very busy; could really use a makeover

  • 226. No kill

    by: lowtide

BHS has evolved from a mismanaged shelter into a place that puts animals first before anything else. The reason for this is the addition of Kim Thompson as shelter manager, and a team of people chosen for their complete dedication to animal welfare. Every employee there makes the shelter great.

    Pros

No kill shelter, great group of staff looking out for animals first.

    Cons

    Need a new shelter.

  • 227. great shelter

    by: savannahbomb

i love the butte humane society. the staff is wonderful and the animals are very well taken care of. the staff at bhs try their hardest everyday and make do with the space that they have at the shelter.

    Pros

caring, loving staff who work very hard for the animals.

    Cons

the shelter is run down, it needs a makeover badly.

  • 228. A little something extra

    by: Danaburger

My favorite thing about the humane society is that the staff members take extra time to consider the personalities of the animals and potential owners. They will be able to tell you which animal would best fit your specific situation as well as their temperaments. If at any time they sense that the interested party will cause harm to an animal or involve it in illegal breeding/fighting/anything else in that realm, they will refuse to adopt the animal to them. It is the attention to detail that makes this shelter so great. Keep up the good work!

    Pros

    Extremely knowledgeable staff!

    Cons

Impossible to keep up with the cleaning demands this shelter requires as it is the only one in the area...

    by: Marleydog

The Butte Humane Society is a great place with LOTS of heart! My current pup came to me from BHS. She had a long stay there prior to my finding her, but with all of the LOVE, CARE, and COMPASSION the staff/volunteers show to the animals on a daily basis, she was well socialized and ready to jump into her forever home!\r\n\r\nThe hours of operation are also very convenient for most anyone. Late in the evening and weekends, too!\r\n\r\nIf you are in the area of Chico, CA -- consider a stop here, who knows, you too may find a friend to bring home with you!

    Pros

    Awesome staff, support, volunteers...

    Cons

Facility NEEDS and deserves a makeover!

  • 237. Loving Shelter

    by: moonapple

My mom and I found a hurt stray Pyrenees dog on our way home one night. We took the poor animal to them the next morning and they took her in, no questions asked and got her the help she needed.\n\nThey try to help every animal that comes through their doors. My family has gotten 5 dogs, 1 cat and 2 guinea pigs from them and they have been very wonderful pets. I have even volunteered when they were having events to try and raise money for the shelter. Because I know that with the more money they can raise the more animals they can help.

    Pros

They are a no kill shelter.

    Cons

Not enough room for more animals.

  • 238. The shelter pets don't mind staying in

    by: chicinmudd

I love this shelter. When I adopted my dog from here my boyfriend and I decided to become volunteers. Now we go down and socialize whenever we can. The staff is great and caring and pretty helpful. The facilities are very clean for a shelter and they just got new outdoor roofs over the kennels.\n The animals here are all great and healthy. Some people donate money to take care of an animal while it's in the shelter and that is just one of the many programs Butte Humane Society has. They also have a great Mutters Day walk so you can support the HS and get your dogs out there walking and socialize with other animal owener. The HS also pairs anyone who didn't bring a dog with one from the shelter to walk. \n\nThis is such a great shelter that can always use more help.

    Pros

great staff, friendly dogs and cats, small animals

    Cons

    needs new facilities

I think that this shelter deserves a makeover. They are starting to have trouble affording it. They are about to redo the roofing on the kennels. I often will donate collars and leashes, cat litter, cat food etc. I really think that this is a very deserving shelter and that it would have earned a shelter makeover, not only for the people but mostly for a animals!

    Pros

Butte Humane society is a wonderful no kill shelter. This shelter is always clean and is staffed by individuals that both love the animals that they house and they love their jobs too. BHS takes in all animals that are brought into it even if they do not have the room to house them. The animals are clean, well fed, and healthy. Employees walk and play with the animals daily. BHS is a wonderful place to find an animal friend to bring into your home. If you have have never been to this shelter, please go and have a look. There are many forever friends that need a home there just waiting for you to make their dream come true.
