  • 1. Love this place!!

    by: akhood88

I started out volunteering at this shelter in March of 2009. I was very worried that it would be depressing walking through those doors but it was the opposite. The Adoption Center is very bright and cheery! You know that the animals are being taken care of and loved here. The older building could use a major face lift, but thats to be expected from a government funded building!

    Pros

Everyone really cares about the animals and wants to help save them all!!

    Cons

Not enough room and no reliable transport van!

  • 2. Great place!

    by: debleemar

I had lost my 7 year old Pugsley to a heart ailment a few weeks earlier and knew there was no way my own heart was going to mend without some assistance. I checked out the BGWCHS website and found Heck and stopped by to visit him and it was love at first sight. I am thankful for the BGWCHS and all they do!

    Pros

    Animals are well cared for...

    Cons

    I couldn't take them all home )o;

  • 3. It could never be just a job...

    by: ecooper0

Ive been an employee at the Bowling Green Warren County Humane Society for about a 1 1/2 yrs now. It seems, however, like I have been a part of this family for so much longer. As I said in the Title, This could never be just a job, working here is an obsession. Seeing every animal that comes into our facility, and seeing all of the ones that are lucky enough to be adopted makes me want to be here around the clock. We work so hard to get each animal a loving home by adoptions and rescues alike. We work very hard to educate the public about spaying and neutering their animals and we have a low cost program for the public. We do so much with the money we raise right now, I could only imagine the good we could do with the million dollars.

    Pros

Every animal is loved and treated with respect

    Cons

We could do so much with more money and space!

  • 4. Admirable Staff

    by: Masonsmom

I adopted Spanky (chi) in 2005 through Rogers' Rescues in NJ who fostered him from Bowling Green, and was amazed that Deana remembered him amongst all the pups that passed through bgwchs in so many years!! I recently adopted Clementine (nna Crystal) directly from the shelter and the process was unbelievably simple thanks to Hannah :) My phone calls & e-mails were answered promptly and I could feel the genuine concern for the pet. The staff is dedicated to finding homes and rescues in other areas so that these loving creatures can LIVE and give added life to the humans that adopt them. The staff attitude is: "Can do, will do, glad to!" The fur-babies attitude is "I will love you furever. . .just give me a chance. It might take me awhile to adjust, but I'm worth the wait!" I've experienced this first-hand and I'm proud of all the people associated with the BGWCHS! Thanks for caring! Teana

  • 5. They do such great things!

    by: kathykoala

B.G. W.C. Humane Society is such a great shelter with wonderful people who work there and the very hard work they do to help out other shelters. They just took in manay, many sick dogs from an over crowded shelter in another county, to try to help get them in adoptbale form soon. Bot of my dogs came from there, Madeline and Manny, and they have been woderful dogs from the first day with us. They really need more help! Kathy Baker

    Pros

Such a nurturing group of people who work there.

    Cons

Not enough funds to get done what needs to be done.

  • 6. Best Shelter I've ever seen

I started volunteering several years ago and was hooked immediately by the shelter, animals, and staff. My husband and I adopted our cat Lexi there and would never get a pet anywhere else again. The place is immaculate and the animals are very well cared for AND loved until homes are found. I just say enough about this shelter!

  • 7. Thank You

    by: fern1214

I have been volunteering at BGWCHS for about a year, but have always been able to walk out empty handed. That was until my daughter came to visit. We decided to go and give all the "critters" some lovins, and she found this adorable puppy. At the time, his name was Dakota. Well, it was love at first sight. He is now at home with his brother Laki, and He-Man, and sistes Yenta and Jasmine. Thank you BGWCHS or being there, I don't know what I would do without you...

    Pros

Great with all of the people and animals

    Cons

none that I can think of

    by: lana2wku

The BGWCHS staff are always planning and hosting events to help raise awareness and materials or money in the community! Our favorite is the adoptathon that is aired on WBKO - our family loves to watch the adorable pets. Thanks to the staff at BGWCHS!

    Cons

  • 9. Love this shelter!

    by: toriwaite

From the moment you enter the BGWCHS you can see it is a place filled with people who want the best for animals. The entire staff, from volunteers to director Lori Hare, is dedicated to making the lives of abandoned animals a little better. I can't imagine my life without my dog I found in their kennels, and I know so many other people who have found joy in animals that would have otherwise been forgotten.

    Pros

    caring and knowledgeable staff

    Cons

not enough space to help more animals!

  • 12. The Shelters WebSite and TV spotlight made it all possible

    by: kimandjudy

Thanks to the WebSite which features a picture and story of the longest residents, I immediately fell in love when I saw Judy last February 16th 2007. Every Friday morning I stop getting ready for work to see what precious cat or dog is going to be featured on TV. It was my conversation with my mother on a Friday evening driving home about the cat that had been on that morning. The next morning I went online and that is where I first saw her. Although the cat was not Judy on TV, it was her beautiful picture and her story having been there since Oct 2006 that captured my heart. Later in the day I went to the shelter and when I saw her in the lobby I was hooked! After having time to sit in the lobby with her and see if she liked me, it was evident we were going home together! The staff was so excited that Judy was going home! We are blessed that we have a dedicated staff and group of volunters that make this all possible.

    Pros

    The staff showed they cared

    Cons

    by: dsosbey

These people work very hard to find homes for the animals in this shelter. The dogs that I have transported from there are just great. They all are very clean and very socialized. These dogs find great forever homes. Its such a shame that our society has become such a "throw-away" society regarding our pets.

We have been to many many shelters in our rescue work. This shelter is, BY FAR, the very best shelter we've ever seen. It's very clean, the staff is wonderful, they really care about the animals, and they do everything possible to find homes for as many animals as they can. I am very very impressed with this group of wonderful people who do a very difficult job and make it look so easy !!!!!!!!!!! I highly recommend this shelter if you are looking for a new pet. You can't go wrong! These people are the best!!!!!!

  • 23. Incredible people at Bowling Green!

    by: aubreydg

Bowling Green Warren County Humane is an exceptional organization. About a year and a half ago I adopted my dog Chloe through a Wisconsin rescue group who works with BGWC. This June I started foster caring for this rescue (Heavenly Hearts) and have now fostered and placed 4 dogs originating from BGWC. I can not say enough good things about this shelter and staff. They are incredible angels who go the extra mile for every animal that enters their facility! I am very proud to play a small part in helping them find forever homes for the wonderful animals who are often overlooked.

    Pros

    incredible staff

    Cons

They could do so much more with a facility makeover

  • 24. Please help this shelter- they opened hearts and doors!

    by: marla1970

This great shelter opened their hearts as well as their doors to the animals that survived the fire that destroyed the shelter in McLean county. They have worked to find homes for these poor animals that survived this tragedy. They are kind, helpful, generous and they deserve some help in updating their shelter. Please pitch in and help out!!! Marla in Elkton

    Pros

We know that if we need anything we can call or e-mail them. We were also very impressed with the cleanliness of the place. If anyone is looking for a cat or dog, I would tell them to go here in a heart beat!

    by: leahlawrence

This shelter is a huge part of my life, and it is a very positive part of the lives of the animals and humans it effects. The staff is knowledgeable and loving, and the shelter puts their animals first. This shelter is very concentrated on community education and I just wish that they had more resources to advance their outreach programs. The Bowling Green / Warren County Humane Society also offers an invaluable spay/neuter service to the public. This shelter deserves a makeover!

    Pros

caring staff, healthy and clean animals, welcoming environment.

    Cons

    not enough resources

  • 29. A Wonderful Place in a Cruel World

    by: snowshoe27

The Bowling Green, KY shelter is a caring, loving place for homeless, abandoned, and surrendered animals. I am amazed at the upbeat atmosphere and friendly help from the staff. I adopted a cat who had been hit by a car from the shelter. He joined two other strays that had adopted me. He has been a wonderful addition to our family. When I adopted Waylon I was investigated to make sure I could and would provide a good home for this sweet boy. I had been going to the shelter to purchase my Science Diet cat food. They were always great to order it especially for me. Then, one summer, I experienced the loss of a cat my husband had adopted 8 years earlier. I looked for Beeper day and night. I kept going to the shelter incase he was turned in. This was the only time I had ever lost an animal, other than to old age, and I was frantic. I never located Beeper, but I did finally adopt Waylon. The staff at the shelter were so kind to me and seemed to feel my loss. I want these wonerful, caring, unselfish people to have the shelter they deserve.

    Pros

ordering pet food for the public, on site spay and neuter, caring staff,no kill shelter

    Cons

Need more help to keep up with the endless animals that come in, need more space to house animals and add to no kill shelter

  • 30. This shelter is the greatest!

    by: iago12568

We love the people that work at this shelter. We have adopted 4 dogs from them and they have helped us with 2 other dogs adopted elsewhere. In our experience, the dogs we have adopted from them come fully vetted, spayed or neutered, and well-adjusted. The 2 dogs adopted from elsewhere, we basically paid a fee just to get them out and then had to go to the vet. This staff definitely cares and their customer service is second to none!

    Pros

Friendly, caring staff, animals well cared for, clean

    Cons

Need more space/get rid of kill facility and replace w/no kill

  • 31. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!

  • 37. Thank you!

    by: ztT4MP78294149

I work part-time and volunteer at the shelter. My best friend, Elly Bean, was adopted from there. Most shelters leave you with a sense of sadness when you leave. Not BGWCHS. We work hard to get our animals out to exercise and keep them happy. \r\nIt's not easy in a shelter. We literally send out a truck full at least once a month to rescue groups. This helps keep space open for more animals. The rescue groups are able to spend more time than we can placing each animal so we know they are getting great forever homes. We also allow people to sponsor animals so they may be adoped at a lower rate.\r\nWe've worked and will continue to work at spaying and neutering until we can get our over population under control. We offer this at a low cost so anyone can afford it. We also have special days throughout the year where you can sign your animal up free of charge!!!Please help us out by having all your pets spayed or neutered!!\r\nIf you are looking for a new addition to your family, check out our list of animals on Petfinder.com.\r\nThank You,\r\nJennyLee

    by: Luvalldogs

I have not personally adopted from Bowling Green but I have met some of the dogs that have come from there. If the dogs coming out of there are that nice and friendly, then they must be doing something right. Anyone who takes helpless animals off of the street and gives them a fighting second chance has got to be good.

    Pros

They accept dogs of all breeds.

    Cons

    They need more help...

  • 50. What a Great Group of People

    by: jrkaster

About 2 and a half years ago, my wife and I made a trip to this shelter to give a dog a home in our new house we had just had built. As if by fate, we parked right in front of the cage of Sawyer. Sawyer spoke to us and we knew that he was the one. We renamed him Scruffles and he has been the greatest thing that has happened in my life in some time. Not only is he a great dog, but the staff there was wonderful to work with through the adoption process. They were very thorough in there check and not just trying to move another animal out. The really care about the animals in their shelter and it shows!! I hope this shelter has a good showing in this contest. If there is a group of people out there that can use this to improve the lives of animals in their community, it is this group!!! Good Luck!!!

    Pros

Great staff with a caring heart

    Cons

Just not enough time or money to do all they want to do

    Cons

I wish I known about this place sooner!

  • 53. Helping Animals!

    by: Zerohour

This group has dedicated staff and volunteers who spend countless hours taking care of animals, rescuing pets, adopting, and educating owners. They're always coming up with creative ways to raise awareness (and funding), and the animals are the ones who benefit. Keep up the good work and thanks to Zootoo for helping!

    Pros

    They REALLY care about animals

    Cons

    None

  • 54. Professional Staff

    by: Downers

We have been very fortunate to take rescue dogs to and from this facility. We were blessed with taking a special needs dog "Tucker" to Janice Wolf at Rocky Ridge Refuge in April 2007. This group of highly professionals made all arrangements. It wasn't until late in 2007 when Zootoo made its first appearance on the Ellen Degeneress show, featuring Rocky Ridge. We were fortunate to know Janice and the wonderful work that she does, especially through the Bowling Green Warren County Humane Society. This organization is "top notch" and a great pleasure to be associated with and ranks right along side Rocky Ridge Refuge.\r\n\r\nThe Kamman's

  • 55. The staff and volunteers ROCK!

    by: Alcave60

My sister volunteers at this shelter and I have helped transport. I have also rescued a dog from the shelter. Deanna, the staff and the volunteers have a passion for rescuing these animals and it shows in everything they do. I've never seen such an effort to connect with so many rescue groups to find forever homes. In spite of having a facility that really needs the "makeover", they provide excellent care to these animals and are such an asset to the community.

    Pros

    compassion, perseverance, connections

    Cons

    needs a makeover!

BGWC Humane Society is a very great place. I am a member of a service sorority that does a lot of work with the shelter and the people there are so welcoming to us all. There are so many different types of people looking to volunteer in different ways and they are able to accommodate everyone, even those who are not pet lovers. The people are always easy to work with and help out.

If only people would spay/neuter more and they weren't needed.

  • 68. BGWCHS rocks!

    by: Ravinator

The BGWCHS is the best humane society I have ever been involved with. I have volunteered for them for three years now, and I really respect the work that they do to help save animals in the area. The work hard to organize local events, do PR, raise money, raise the profile of the shelter, and find pets permanent, loving homes. BGWCHS rocks!

    Cons

Not enough money to save all the lives they'd like to!

Great place with a staff that works so hard to place the animals. They care about each one that comes in the door. by: Molly2713

I felt so welcomed at The Bowling Green- Warren Co. Humane Society. It was my first time visiting on March 28th. I went for a service project through my sorority and it was one of my favorite weekends this semester! I feel in love with a dog named Zara, walked alot of other dogs and had a blast with the cats! The staff helped us right away and told us about this contest and I am more than willing and excited to help this wonderufl shelter out. They do so much for these animals and I don't see any reason not to help them!

    Pros

    Cons

They need a bigger place for all these little animals! =)

  • 72. NO KILL SHELTER

    by: TEPP

I WISH THE SHELTER WERE OPEN UNTIL 6PM. THEY USUALLY DO AN ANNUAL FREE SPAY, NEUTER. THEY DO A GOOD JOB OF ADVERTISING LOCALLY AND LETTING THEIR NEEDS BE KNOWN. I THINK A DIFFERNT LOCATION ALL TOGETHER MIGHT BE BETTER AND MORE CONVENIENT FOR MORE PEOPLE

    ANNUAL DOG WALK

    Cons

  • 73. Friendly staff

    by: Brolfs

I adopted a pet from this shelter about 4 years ago. I was a college student and thought the idea of having a dog would be great. Little did I know that having a dog is a lot of work (and money!). After about a month, I realized that I was in over my head and wanted Belle (my dog's name) to have the best and I couldn't provide that. I returned her to the shelter and came in contact with one of the lovely ladies that work there. She immediantly fell in love with Belle and shortly after, she adopted her! It was hard to give her up but ended up to be a great story because I know she is in great hands now!

    by: Falconbridge

I've adopted four dogs from the Bowling Green/Warren County Humane Society, and have fostered pups several times now. The staff and volunteers are extremely dedicated and hard working. I stop in for a visit every time I'm in town just to talk to them or maybe walk a dog or two. They always make me feel welcome even if I'm just visiting. And they make the shelter a great environment for both the animals they care for and the people who are looking for a good friend.\r\n

  • 77. excellant

    by: ktjamommy

This shelter is one of the best I've been to. They do their best to inform you as to the pet ur interested in. They try to find you the best pet that is fit for your family especially if you have children. They do make it difficult to adopt for some, as they want to make sure the pet is going to be takin care of properly. It's good to know that there is a shelter that's not just trying to put animals anywhere, they try to find the perfect homes for them.!! I wouldn't go anywhere else!

    Pros

    very well informed

    Cons

    hard to adopt at times

  • 78. Wonderful Job

  • 79. Love this shelter!!

    by: ztT4MP69176554

I have adopted three of the most amazing animals from this shelter. I have a Pitbull that is the love of my life. She is absolutely amazing, without the love and care from the staff at the Bowling Green Humane Society she would have never made it. I also have two cats that I have adopted from the shelter. Sophie and Saddie are best friends and keep me very busy. They are young cats who love to run wild, pouncing on anything in their way. I love these animals and without this shelter they would have been lost.

    Pros

This is a wonderful place to get a pet. I wouldn't go anywhere else, the staff is so helpful and understands each pet and what their needs are.

    Cons

There is not enough room for the pets that the shelter is trying to care for. It is very hard for them to make room for the pets that are coming to the shelter.

  • 80. Animal lovers!

I love this place! Almost all of my furbabies are from here! -They gave them excellent care & a second chance on life. -They also did not lie to me like other shelters do, and told me exactly what to do with my animals and how to fix the problems that they were found with. -The people who work here do everything they can to help the animals, they are truely angels! -I cannot thank them enough for helping to save my Baylee, Bella, and Chewa!!!!!!

    Pros

People who love what they do!

There is never enough room to take in all the animals that are being overbred in Kentucky.

I love the Bowling Green - Warren County Humane society! I have adopted a pet from there and they also cared for another pet who was lost. They provide such a wonderful service with limited resources. They truly deserve this makeover and I pray they will win it! A representative is always around our community each week encouraging adoptions. • 87. A caring Facility

    by: ztT4MP69352088

My name is Heather and about 18 years ago my mother and I would go to the BGWC Humane Society where they would let us pick out a pet for the day and take it around to local nursing homes in Bowling Green and visit with the patients. I remember watching their faces light up when Mom would walk in the room followed by a little blonde, 4-year-old cuddling some sort of small dog or cat in my arms. The patients just melted! The BGWC Humane Society was so helpful in finding sweet, loveable pets for us to take into these homes, and they really helped to brighten the day for several elderly people, not to mention a small girl and her mother. The staff at the BGWC Humane Society are so caring and compassionate. They truely deserve a high ranking in this contest!

    Pros

The shelter is clean and well kept. The animals are well provided while they wait for a loving home

    Cons

The current facility is too small to house as many homeless pets as needed

  • 88. Tipper and Tyler: thanks to BGWCHS

    by: Callalily

My two lab-mix girls were the last two of their litter remaining at the shelter on a February Saturday seven years ago; the staff thanked us for taking them -- they were in danger of outliving their allotted time! Everyone at the shelter seems truly to love the animals, and they are dedicated to their work. Their goal of having a totally no-kill operation is most laudable!\r\n

    Pros

    The dedicated staff and volunteers

    Cons

Not enough money -- of course!

  • 89. PEARLYGIRL AND JEZEBEL

    by: tootiegirl

I adopted both of my dogs from the Bowling Green Warren County Humane Society...I have had Jezebel for 7 years and Pearlygirl for 5. I can't tell you the immense joy and love these dogs have brought into our lives. From the moment I entered the facility, I encountered not only a very devoted and knowledgeable staff, but an overall feeling of love that the staff and volunteers have for all the animals at the shelter. It would be wonderful to win this contest, not only for the animals, but to give back to the people that have worked so hard to protect, love and nurture our four legged friends.

    by: JesAnne

I was hesitant at first about getting a dog from a shelter - and was even more worried after the one I was supposed to get fell through. However, Bowling Green REALLY stepped up to the plate and made my adoption process wonderful. My dog is perfect! \r\n\r\nThere was great follow up, and when I had questions, I knew I could call or email and they would respond immediately. When my puppy got sick shortly after leaving the shelter, they gave me meds to fix her at NO COST! by: ChrissyTeen

We were very upset about having to put our dog down. We knew it had to happen. He had been suffering for days. Once we got there they said we would need to pay $20.00 for the services but we already knew he was going to pass away. It was obvious. We had just been in a roll-over car accident and we just couldn't afford it. But at the end they really understood and made it so that we wouldn't have to pay. The people are very sweet. When they gave him the medicine it looked as if our dog smiled at us as he was leaving this world. Thats all I wanted for him. I know if I were to pass away I would want to pass away in such a friendly place surrounded by kind people who really care. The whole time the people there were patting are backs and caring for us and the dog. You can tell they are very genuine and love animals. Very nice people and place!!! They deserve to win!

    Pros

Very friendly and happy environment for pets.

    Cons

    Honestly none.

    by: PetMomma

Although the current animals being cared for are well taken care of the BGWC Humane Society needs help and donations. Hopefully in the future no animal will be "youthanized" due to over population and a shortage of room. All animals healthy or sick deserve a chance. Think of them as people and you will see the light too.

    by: ztT4MP48464473_DEAD_

I have helped with transports of dogs when this shelter sends animals to PA on their way to rescue.\r\nAlthough, I have never been to the shelter, I know that Deana and Lorri are doing everything in their power to get dogs and cats to safety.\r\nThe arrival of the box van here in PA is a sight to behold. When they open that back door, seeing all those animals that will now have a chance at a new home here on the East coast, just takes my breath away. I have been doing rescue for 9 years and have found few people in shelter situations that still have the drive, after seeing all the sadness that surrounds them, to do everything they can to ensure that each of these babies gets a fair shot at a good life.\r\nWe recently lost our Lab mix and I am now looking to Bowling Green to bring a new member into our family. I hope to continue a relationship with this shelter long into the future. I might add that the animals that get off that box van are the most wonderful natured I have ever seen. The dogs I have transported from Kutztown to the Vince Lombardi rest area had the best temperaments and were so beautiful. You could never go wrong adopting from this shelter. If I had room every dog we moved would be living here with me.\r\nThis shelter is the BEST!

  • 130. Our first pet

    by: kathyfoushee

We had been married only a few months and decided to get a pet. Since we both worked full time, we thought a cat would be best. We went down to the Warren County Humane Society, since my husband had gotten a previous pet there. The staff was kind, courteous and let us "browse" as long as we wanted. We found our Tango and he was a joy. It was obvious that he had received tender loving care during his stay at the shelter. He was a wonderful kitty and we enjoyed 11 years of his company. I can't thank the Humane Society enough for providing animals with a second chance.\r\n\r\nKathy

    Pros

    Friendly staff, clean facility

    Cons

    Not enough room, short hours

  • 131. The Great Staff of our Humane Society

    by: mjtbear568

Our staff in the BG Humane Society is the best. They have taken our tiny Humane Society that was euthanizing hundreds of strays and turned it into a no-kill facility. The director has developed many contacts with rescues to send dogs to, so that they have a chance of finding a good forever home. With the help of her staff and many great volunteers - they give their utmost to protect the lost animals of our community. They have my complete respect and gratitude!!

    Pros

They work so hard to save as many lives as possible

    Cons

The cons are not their fault...they have to deal with too many intakes

  • 132. A wonderful, friendly place

    by: MikePageKY

It's a truly wonderful place, their adoption center is fantastic. I have adopted 4 cats from there, all healthy and well adjusted, and get along like a family. Even the 3 legged one. They have vets and vet techs on staff and they really, truly care for the animals. The care and welfare of the animals come first with each and every staff member. But they are so very crowded. Please go see some of the beautiful critters that need homes, they'll steal your heart away.

    Pros

Sparkling clean, animals all appear healthy and well cared for, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and it's always the animals first.

    Cons

The same as everywhere. It's too crowded. They need more homes to adopt.

    by: pleathem

I adopted three of my girls from the BGWCHS -- Molly, Ruby, and Allie. They are three of six dogs I have. I've also rendered dogs to the HS, and have participated in pet transports. The staff is bright and energetic; they are knowledgeable and very caring. And I very much like the transport program. What a great way to help find homes for these precious, innocent creatures. While I live over 70 miles from the HS, I know that when I relinquish an animal to them, the animal will be well cared for. I have a great deal of confidence in this organization, and truly hope that their efforts will be rewarded with this make-over. These lovely people have worked hard and deserve it -- and, most of all, the animals deserve it.

    by: ztT4MP35330700

I think our shelter is one of the best run that I've ever seen. The adoption center is just wonderful, too. I have an American Eskimo that Lorri hand-picked for me, & she's the light of my life! Lorri understands pets as well as people! If we could get a make-over for our old shelter, just think of all of the lives Lorri & her staff could change for the better! They would be able to house more animals, & have vistation rooms so that adoptive "parents" could make the right choice to give that pet a forever home! Thank you,\r\n\r\n M. Thessen

The Bowling Green Humane Society is filled with wonderful people and animals. Our family has adopted three fabulous dogs from them in the last 4 years. All three are fun, loving, adorable dogs. They repay us with love and entertainment everyday. \r\n\r\nThe staff at the humane society work hard and truly care for the animals. It is a tough job. There are many many animals who are brought into the shelter every week. The shelter has recently built a no kill building, but unfortunately we have one building that is not. The crew of the shelter are wonderful. We are lucky to have such a staff caring for the strays of Bowling Green!!!

BGWC Humane Society has some of the best animal care workers and volunteers in the field. Lorri, the Director and Deana, the assistant director live and breathe that shelter. The animals are lucky to come to a shelter that has such tunnel vision, that all animals deserve a good home. The volunteers are such an important role in easing the tension of being in a shelter and giving them much needed "play time". And these volunteers are wonderful.

    by: KathCT

I have had the pleasure of working with Dena and Lori on some long-distance transports of adoptable dogs here to CT. I have such respect for what this shelter does and hope to visit someday. The time and effort they put in to network with less-crowded shelters here in the east and transport some of their dogs is amazing. This is truly a model of how long-distance transports can be done responsibly and can save many lives. I hope you guys make the top 20 in the makeover contest, and I hope my shelter, Danbury Animal Welfare Society, does too!

    Pros

    Cons

  • 152. Great shelter! Please adopt or rescue from here!

    by: BGWCHSfan

I adopted a dog from here that was injured. She had to have her leg amputated. A lot of shelters would have just killed her because it's expensive to treat sick dogs. They raised funds and amputated her leg and saved her life! Wonderful, caring staff. Please support this shelter!

    Cons

  • 158. BGWC Humane Society

    by: dpaschall

The Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society has come a long way in the last 10 years. It has developed into a top notch facility with professional staff and active Board members. It has been grass rooted in its efforts to overcome the weaknesses of the previous facility. More animals get a chance at getting a placement and not put down for lack of interest or efforts of Board and staff.

    Pros

    sincere staff and board; caring staff; very active in community;

    Cons

underfunded by local governments; need to get more politically involved in local and state elections

  • 159. We are fortunate

    by: maryannb

The Humane Society we have here in BG with the great workers and volunteers is a true blessing. When it was time to adopt a dog, I told them about our lifestyle and what we were looking for in a dog. Without skipping a beat, they matched us with three who were all sweet but one was perfect for us. We are now her humans and are wrapped around her paws. Did I mention that included (besides being fully vetted and micro chipped) there is a free session with a behaviorist/trainer. Were working on the wrapping around paws thing. Even more importantly they educate adopters and do all they possibly can to promote forever homes!

    Pros

People truly love and care about animals

    Cons

needs to be able to house more animals

  • 160. Nice, caring people - very well organized

    by: OtterTail

I've dealt with BGHS long-distance and they have been wonderful. I volunteer for a rescue group and I have adopted/rescued 2 dogs. Both were transported many miles to where I could meet them. They were vetted and microchiped. All the paperwork was well-organized and all of the people could not have been nicer. Clearly they love animals and want to help as many as possible find forever homes. They deserve to win!

All of the employees are very passionate about what they are doing, and they all strive very hard to keep the animals healthy and happy while they are there and waiting for their forever home. I know without a doubt that the shelter could do some amazing things if we win this makeover!

    Pros

    Cons

  • 166. Great place to Adopt!!

    by: Milo0987

This shelter was very helpful in our adoption. Love that all the animals pics online are updated regularly - helped me be able to grab the beagle that I have now (got in January 2007). Also not long after we had our dog he had and eye problem and had to have surgery on his eye (which would have been very expensive) but since he hadn't been neutered yet, the shelter took care of the surgery for us free of charge!! We were very happy about that. Very helpful staff and a nice facility!!

    Pros

Put every adoptable animal online with picture

    Cons

Have to return animal back to shelter if unable to keep, can't give away

Even though I wish we did not have to have Animal Shelters at all, alas some pet owners are just not responsible people. I think this is one of the better ones in that all the animals from the smallest to the largest look well cared for and loved.\r\n\r\nIf you consider a pet, please consider one of these. There are many to choose from and they would just like to be loved.

    Pros

Our shelter has done so much in such a small amount of time. Just a few years ago, we were one building. We have the Hildreth Adoption Center now. I still am overjoyed every time that I walk into that building. As happy as I am with this success, I would love for us to have a clinic. We have a trailer for spaying/neutering, but we don't have facilities for treating some of our animals. It's heartbreaking at times.

    by: emgoodnight

I found my dog on the internet through Petfinders and he was at the Bowling Green Warren County Humane Society. He'd been there since he was 4 months old and he was a year at the time I adopted him. I read his story and it just broke my heart. Deana Wehr worked with me on getting a transport up to Mansfield, Ohio and then I picked him up in Mansfield over 4 years ago. In truth, he rescued me! I was in a deep depression and he was and is the best thing to happen to me. I own a bead store and he comes to work with me every day. He greets all my customers at the door and they love him. Some come just to spend some time with him if they've recently lost their pet. I realized the reason Shanti has not been rescued sooner is that he was waiting for me -- or we were waiting for each other. The Bowling Green Humane Society was just wonderful to work with and I am very indebted to them for this wonderful dog of mine.

    by: Switch

It's great to have a nice shelter for animals who need a safe place to stay where they will be properly cared for untill they can find a permanent home. We need such a place where I live, the animals in my community do not get a fair chance. I feel so bad for them and wish I could do more.

    Pros

    Seems like a nice place

    Cons

    No Complaints

  • 177. A most deserving animal shelter......

    by: cynthiamsmith

I have lived in BG for 34 years now and at various times have visited the shelter, called on the shelter for information on animals, advice on the care of animals, etc. I've always found them to be very helpful and am so glad to see the help they get from the community. Whenever they are trying to raise money for the shelter or "products" for the shelter our community always comes through. That's great in the fact that there is always going to be a need for the shelter. I recently worked with a lady who volunteers her time with the shelter in taking care of animals at home - she always seemed to have a houseful! She would bring in pictures of her "babies" and sometimes she would bring an animal to work on her day off so we could see. She was so proud! I think this is a most wonderful thing that she does - helping take care of animals that have special needs and need a little extra TLC. She is a great person. I'm a little envious of her in a way - she is doing something that I would love to do, however I live in an apartment building and can't have pets - unless I pay a "big" deposit and with a roommate I really don't have the room right now. My mother was an animal lover and took in animals all the time. People would leave them on her porch or call her for help. Mother could never say no! She always, always had animals - mostly cats! It is my desire that when I retire I will spend alot of time at the shelter and caring for animals in my home. One of these days I will move out of that apartment! In the meantime I will call them and talk about becoming a volunteer. I'm sure I could find the time to do something - interact with the cats. My friend told me that is something they don't get alot of. I would love that. So in memory of my mother I will contact the shelter and see when is the best time for me to visit and get registered as a volunteer. BGWCHS is a great facility, a loving facility, and most helpful facility for all the animals that have to be there. They could definitely use a makeover to keep up with the present day situation in our community where our animals are concerned.

    Pros

    A very caring staff

    Cons

Space is utilized very well, they just need a bigger facility to help more animals!

  • 184. Reliable across the board!

    by: angelajones

I've been fortunate to work with this shelter in many different capacities: as a foster for one if its special-needs dogs, as an adopter (of that same dog--I'm not very good at fostering!), as a volunteer at community events, and as a liaison between the shelter and various rescuers and adopters. I am always impressed with the dedication of the staff members and other volunteers, and I'm proud that this is my hometown humane society.

    Pros

caring & hardworking staff, fast replies to inquiries

    Cons

sometimes inconsistent info shared about animals

  • 185. BGWCHS is Great!!

    by: cwoosley18

The BGWCHS is a great place to volunteer. I have volunteered several times by walking and bathing the dogs and it's been so rewarding everytime I do it. When I was going through my divorce I would go when I was feeling down and leave feeling so great because I knew I was helping out the animals. The only bad thing about doing that is that I want to take all the animals home and give them a good life.

    Pros

    The Shelter is Great!!

    Cons

    It needs more help!

  • 186. I love this facility and its employees.

    by: Herndon

This shelter so deserves a make-over. I have adopted many cats and dogs from there who transform into the most wonderful companions for the remainder of their lives. I fostered a pig for them a few years ago because they had no where to put him at the time to keep him healthy and cool in the very hot weather. I also have a goat I adopted from there and he is very happy with my rescued horses and cats. Our shelter needs lots of things but I'd really like to see us get a large animal facility. I have seen many cases of abuse in this county and unfortunately, most of the animals live out their lives that way because of the lack of laws to protect them. Large animals might be relinquished or seized more often if there was a facility which could house them, too.

    Pros

This shelter has made huge strides in the last several years.

    Cons

People in Warren County still mistreat many animals.

  • 187. bgwchs is awesome

  • 188. Wonderful People!

    by: NYBA

I found out about this shelter several years ago when I was assiting with a dog transport-I volunteered to do one of the legs and I went on-line to see which animals would be on it. I saw the amount of dogs and puppies they had posted and decided that I would adopt one. I adopted Annie, a 13 week old Aussie Mix. She is such a good girl and I love having her in my home. That was 4 years ago and Annie continues to be a ray of sunshine for me. I e-mail Deanna and Lorri updates from time to time and also have helped my sister adopt a dog from them last year. I try to send them a donation every now and again--since the profiles of some of the dogs really tugs at the old heartstrings.\r\nThis past December I saw an adorable basset hound on petfinder and just fell in love with her--I contacted Deanna and before I knew it I had Penelope in my lap!\r\n\r\nThe people of this shelter care so much for the animals they are trying to help--their web-site is updated daily and they do their best to provide a detailed description of the animals they profile. I don't know how they do it everyday. I have never set foot in this shelter, since I live in NY, but I feel such a close connection with what they are doing there--it is just a wonderful, wonderful place that I really cannot say enough good things about..See for yourself, and if you have room in your home and heart adopt one of the many animals they have available and if you can't be sure to spay and neuter the ones you do have.

    Pros

    Most Dedicated staff

    Cons

Too Far away for me to volunteer at

  • 189. This shelter is GREAT!!!

Our director does and awesome job and I can only imagine the huge amount of time she dedicates to the shelter. I admire her for her passion for the animals. The entire staff at our shelter is always friendly and helpful. They truly love the animals and have the best interest of the animals as top priority. They all work very hard to help and care for the animals. I have adopted several shelter animals myself and I encourage others to do so. My shelter animals have been wonderful additions to my family and I love them all!!! I wish I could help more of the animals. My most recent additions are 2 adult male orange tabby cats. I have only had them a short time and now I couldn't imagine my home without them.\r\n So, PLEASE consider a shelter animal for an addition to your home, you will not regret it!\r\nIt will be one of the best decisions you will ever make!!!

    Pros

Love and dedication for the care of the animals.

    Cons

Lack of funding and people to adopt.

  • 191. Awsome!!!

    by: LeiahDrake

The staff here are wonderful! There does not seem to be enough help when you have questions on an animal. We have adopted two dogs from there and plan to adopt more! Our first dog had been abused when we adopted her. We had to have her put to sleep almost two years ago because of cancer. We could not stop the pain and did not think we could bond with another the way we did with her, however, we went there and looked anyway. We adopted Molly. We got her when she was a four months old. She is now a little over a year and more than a little spoiled!!!!\r\nWhen we went to adopt Molly, the staff was very understanding when we told them of Daisy. They lent an ear and adopted us our baby.\r\nWe now try to participate with anything that has to do with the shelter!!!

    Pros

We would have never had our "babies" without them

    Cons

    need more help!

    by: jennygrace26

I had a wonderful experience with this shelter. I found my cat on petfinder.org and was able to drive to come pick her up ( I live in TN). Her name was Tyranny and I adopted her in 2003 and I cannot imagine being without her! Her new name is Gabby Grace Gamble. Look at her on my profile! I wish I knew who gave her up. I would hug them forever. She is an absolute blessing. I am so thankful for her! The staff was awesome. Lori helped me so much.

    Pros

    Cons

    I live in another state!

  • 193. A great place!

    by: Bubbled26

I love the staff here they really do a great job for these animals. The adoption includes more than most shelters and the adoption fee is not high at all! These are really well cared for animals, and the shelter employees are honest about the animals. I love to go and see the animals, they don't mind people just looking around as some shelters do. This is definitely the shelter I would adopt from! They are really wonderful!!!

    Pros

    Cons

    none

  • 194. They are very caring

    by: vjrussell84

My husband and I adopted our cat, Leia from here and she's wonderful. I think one of the keepers had a special bond with her. I could tell how much they really cared. We took our dog, Jezebel there to be spayed and the staff was wonderful. Jezzie wasn't even scared, she just made some new friends there. I never expected her to be so happy after surgery.

    Pros

The animals here are so well cared for

    Cons

I have nothing negative to say, but they have a lot of cats that need homes.

  • 195. Very Helpful Nice and Clean

    by: ChristineBragg

They were so nice! They lost my paper work but were so friendly and promptly found it and got everything straightened out. The staff seemed like they really went the extra mile with the care of the animals up for adoption by showing a lot of affection and care. It was very clean in both of the buildings! Its the best looking shelter I ever went to. The cages were all clean and they seemed to have a lot of room.

Take a look at any other humane society. You just won't find one that helps so many animals and goes out of its way to improve and educate the community. Look at the adoptable animals lists at other humane societies; they don't have half the number as the Bowling Green Warren County does! Our shelter is doing a lot of good and deserves continued support.

    Pros

The shelter is run really well with a lot of organization and collaboration.

    Cons

The helpers are very busy, so inquiries may take a while. Just have patience!

  • 197. Great shelter

    by: chbander

This shelter does the best job of keeping the shelter clean and the animals happy of any of the shelters that I've been to. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful and make the experience a great one. The only thing they need is more space to deal with the sheer volume of animals which come through the doors of the shelter.

    Pros

    Knowledgeable staff

    Cons

Not enough space for number of animals taken in.

  • 198. I would adopt from them again!

    by: linsy7182

My friend knows the lady who runs the shelter, so after my first cat passed away we drove to Bowling Green from Nashville the next day and adopted a beautiful Tabby who had been there for four months and was on her way to being put to sleep, she became the most amazingly loving cat there is and I would definitely adopt from them again.

    Pros

Very helpful staff, wonderful care of animals

    Cons

The only downfall is they do euthenize animals

  • 199. Fan from Alabama

    by: edmonab

Hi! I lost my 15 year old dog almost a year ago. I used Petfinder to locate my next dog. I typed in my zip code and"terrier" and the next thing I knew, I had fallen in love with a jack russel mix in Bowling Green, Kentucky (and I live in Alabama). I filled out the online application late one night and before they had even opened the next morning, they had already called my vet to do a "character" check. I called the shelter several times and decided that this puppy was indeed the right one for me. I decided to let the BGWC Humane Society spay her, but I had to wait until she was old enough. The staff did not want her to stay at the shelter by herself since she was so little so they found her a wonderful foster home, and in January, I made the 4+ hour drive to claim my dog. It was well worth it. If anyone form the BGWC is reading this, the dog that I got was a jack russel mix named Cadi. I changed her name to Greta though. She is doing wonderful and turned one on November 12. Thank you so much for operating such a fine establishment!!

This is one of the few shelters where you can truly say that an animal there is better off than homeless! the staff truly care and love each pet that comes through their doors! They dont give up on the underdogs (undercats) just because they arent designer pets and they show compassion in each thing they do for the community as well as those that depend on them everyday!!! the only bummer is they do still have to euthenize because ppl are too lazy or stupid to spay/neuter!

Generous hearts, with more love in the surroundings than you can imagine. \r\n\r\nMy ultimate goal would be for the shelter to be able to meet all needs of each and every adoptable pet regardless of what it is. Also, for more people in our community to be involved with our shelter. I think if we could get a makeover, more people would visit....therefore volunteering their time, or better yet, adopting a pet(s).

everyone tries so hard to give the very best to the pets at the facility. Every effort is made to find as many animals as possible homes, through rescues, adoptions. The low cost spay neuter program is so beneficial, performing numerous procedures weekly to help control the pet population. The comfort and well being of all pets are of priority. My hats off to everyone!

    Pros

    everyone really cares

    Cons

    facilities need updating

  • 218. Important to our community and further

    by: Rowyna

I have adopted pets from this shelter and volunteered my time here. I have seen alot of changes and what seems like an ever growing dependence of other area communities on them. A couple of years ago a neighboring county's shelter burned to the ground and this shelter took in more than half of the surviving animals, nursing them back to health and finding them homes during the long rebuilding period. Now many neighboring communities who can not support better shelter services call this shelter to help save an animal short on time but with so much adoption potential. Our community has become so much more aware of the needs of homeless animals because of their efforts. They also work with out of state rescues and shelters to help place breeds of animals in areas where they are more desired and away from areas that are too breed restrictive or where the breed is already too populous.

    Pros

Very honest...they want to make the correct match, not just any match.

    Cons

Needs more space to meet growing area support.

  • 219. I love this Shelter!

I found Sammie Jo my Lab/Husky mix on www. pet finder.com and once I saw her adorable picture and read her profile that she was rescued by the Bowling Geen Warren Co. Humane Society and that she was going to be put down a few days before they picked her up. I couldn't sleep at night. I just knew I had to save her. First I had to convince my loving husband!! I cried a lot and I guess the aligator tears did work. I filled out the paperwork, paid my fee's and she was transported to Gurnee, ILL where I met a life long friend. When I first saw her I just wanted to cry and she came right up to me and kissed my face. She knew she was finally going home. Of course Sammie Jo and Sadie are two peas in a pod. They have their moments like two little kids they always want their Mom & Dad's attention 24/7. Sammie Jo loves her new home and family she is doing fabulous. We love her and can't imagine life with out her!!

We work really hard to keep the shelter clean and inviting for the animals and our visitors. Our goal is to find each of our residents their perfect homes. We also have a low cost spay and neuter program. Without it our pet overpopulation problem will neverimprove. Please come out and see us. Let us prove how friendly and dedicated we are in our mission to find homes for our cat and dog friends.

    Pros

We have a great team at the shelter. Our volunteers are top rare and we couldn't do it without each and every one of you.

    Cons

People who don' t understand the importance of spay and neutering your pets..

  • 223. We have the best shelter there could be... Everyone is great!

    by: jpendley

Lori and the gang are the best... We would love for them to get the Shelter Makeover.

    Pros

Easy to find - easy to get in and out...

    Cons

Too many people in this area have not had their pets spayed or neutered. But the staff at HS is working to educate everyone...

    by: Romeosmom

The people at the BGWCHS are very helpful and the animals are so great! Keep up the wonderful work you all! I would love to have an older dog but at this point can not afford to invest in underground fencing so you all make me feel better by allowing me to make small donations toward pet adoptions for those who do have the space to take a dog home with them... thank you so much!

    Pros

    Great people and wonderful animals

    Cons

    Need expanded facilities

  • 225. They deserve it!

    by: leahlawrence

This shelter is a huge part of my life, and when I am there I can sense that I am part of something that really matters. Every animal whose life I see changed changes my life, and it makes me want to live better and care more. This shelter has an unparalleled energy, and I know that it will only continue to expand and grow.

    Pros

This shelter is warm and welcoming, and they do their absolute best with the resources they have!

    Cons

This shelter needs more resources to put to good use!

  • 226. BGHS Warren County Rocks!

    by: MotherEsetter

I have never physically been to the Bowling Green Humane Socitey Warren County, but I can tell you what I know about this wonderful shelter and their staff. Once a month they run a box van to Kutztown, PA, where the most wonderful dogs, cats, puppies and kittens are taken in by East Coast rescues, where they are cared for and finally find forever homes. Deana and Lorrie are top notch and Theresa, who drives the box van to Kutztown, well what can I say about her devotion to the animals who end up at BGHS. I have personally driven many of the throw aways that ended up in the shelter to their destinations in rescues here on the East Coast. \r\nI am amazed at how hard they work to make sure that these animals get to some place safe.\r\nPLEASE VOTE FOR BGHS! I cannot say enough about this facility! I would be delighted if they won the top prize. They so deserve it. This would create many positive changes for the dogs and cats coming into their facility.\r\n\r\nBonnie Girard\r\nFounder, Above and Beyond English Setter Rescue\r\nwww.esrescue.org\r\n

    Pros

This shelter and its staff work very hard!

    Cons

No cons, that I can think of

  • 227. They deserve to win!

    by: cadycam

This shelter has some of the greatest people I have ever met in my life. I live in another county where our "shelter" is substandard. The conditions are horrible and our city doesn't doesn't seem to care. I do a lot of rescue work in my county and if I can't find a home for one of the strays, I always know that I can bring the animal to them and they will make sure a good home is found. They update you when you call and always answer your questions. \r\n\r\nI love all of these people and honor them for the hard job they face everyday. \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

    Pros

Will accept out of county animals, goes the extra mile to help.

    Cons

    I can't think of one!

  • 228. PARTIAL

    by: deanawehr

I WORK @ THIS SHELTER SO I'M PRETTY PARTIAL. WE HAVE COME A LONG WAY IN JUST A FEW YEARS. WE VERY RARELY EUTHANIZE DOGS DUE TO LACK OF SPACE DUE TO A HARD WORKING STAFF, GREAT COMMUNITY, AND RESCUES WHO OFFER ASSISTANCE IN PLACING ANIMALS. WE OFFER A LOW-COST SPAY / NEUTER PROGRAM AND STRIVE TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON IT'S IMPORTANCE. IN 7 YEARS WE HAVE OPENED UP A SPAY/NEUTER CLINIC, AN ADOPTION CENTER, IN ADDITION TO THE EXISTING HUMANE SOCIETY AND/OR ANIMAL CONTROL (WHICH IS IN DIRE NEED OF REPAIR!)

    Pros

    MICROCHIPPING, HEALTH INSURANCE, WEBSITES

    Cons

WORKING TO GET MORE $$ FOR FREE SPAY NEUTER FOR THE PUBLIC
