  • 5. Correction...

    by: Nettie2468

I just wanted to correct those posting that this shelter is No-kill. It most certainly is not and anyone staff memebers that tell you it is are lieing to you. I am a former volunteer & employee of the Bay Area SPCA and I can tell you that they have NEVER been a no-kill facility. They used to euthanize in relatively low numbers and primarily just those that were deemed "unadoptable". Although this begs the question of what constitutes "unadoptable" (seeing that many of us have animals in our own homes that would b considered "unadoptable in someone's eyes), it was still a much better situation than what is apparently going on there now. Since the new manager/director Jennifer Rowan took over, the numbers of euthanasias & animals not accepted unfortunately skyrocketed. I am told by one of their board members that they now no longer accept any "stray" animals and mostly just pull animals from another high volume kill facility, the Galveston County Animal Control. They have also implemented a temperment testing program that gives them a flimsy excuse for euthanizing or not accepting animals. Please realize that I am not trying to bash the BASPCA or its volunteers & staff, I am just trying to clear up some of the lies. I think that people that donate, adopt from, or even just vovally promote the BASPCA deserve to know the truth about what happens there.\r\nPlease see this article for more information.\r\nhttp://www.galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=89bd93919d1d7677 \r\n\r\nBTW, if you are looking for a truly no-kill facility, check out Whiskerville.org. Whiskerville Animal Sanctuary is the only standing no kill facility in our entire area!

    Pros

    Nearby, physical location

    Cons

    NOT a No-Kill!!!

  • 6. Nice place

    by: ztT4MP79313898

SUCH A NICE PLACE FOR ANIMALS WAITING FOR NEW PARENTS!! YOU COULD HEAR THE STAFF TALKING IN BABY VOICES TO SOME OF THE ANIMALS (EVEN THE MEN WORKERS)!! I LIKED THAT THEY GAVE ME TIME TO PLAY WITH THE PETS THAT I WAS INTERESTED IN SO I FELT COMFORTABLE WITH MY DECISION!! BIG DIFFERENCE FROM THE HEALTH DEPARTMENTS BUILDING. IT WAS COLD AND VERY SAD. NOT A LOT OF THE DOGS WERE UP FOR ADOPTION BECAUSE THEY ALL HAD COLDS!! NO WONDER BECAUSE IT WAS SO DAMP AND COLD!! THE DOGS SEEMED PRETTY HAPPY AND PEPPY HERE AND THAT MADE IT EASIER FOR ME TO DECIDE ON A DOG THAT FELT RIGHT, RATHER THAN JUST CHOOSING A DOG BECAUSE I FELT SORRY FOR IT!! IT WAS ALSO REALLY NEAT THAT SOME OF THE CAGES HAD SOME ADDED COMFORTS OF A HOME LIKE A OLD CUSHION CHAIR, BLANKIES, AND TOYS!!

    Pros

great area and personal touches in the cages for each pet

    Cons

not a lot of space for more pets

  • 7. Awesome Animal Shelter

    by: elacrow

The Bay Area SPCA (Adopt a Pet) is extremely clean and it's workers and volunteers are extremely friendly. Everybody there cares about the animals and it shows. One can feel confident that once a pet is adopted it will come from very good care. Their adoption rules are very strict and followed to a "T".\r\nSo go and check it out and "Adopt a Pet".

    Pros

    "Animals First" and it shows

    Cons

    Need much more space

  • 8. Nice people!

    by: sissy4no1

This place is great...I adopted a guinea pig with a crooked neck from here and I could tell that even though they were glad to see him get a good home, they were sad to see him go. You can tell the staff cares about all of their animals.

    Pros

    Variety of animals

    Cons

    Far drive

  • 9. wonderful shelter, very loving

Everyone there is friendly, very pet loving, and all though they are dealt a big hand at times, they never give up. They really need this make over and i am praying everyday for them to win. With the love and loyalty they put into there pets it would be wonderful for them to be able to have a much bigger needed space and supplies to share thier love even more..

    Pros

    Everything...

    Cons

    none

  • 10. no kill

    by: jduchette

There is so much devotion at places like this. They all need help to expand their services. \r\n\r\nI wish that all animals could be so lucky to have help like this. We have so much power to help. I am so happy that no kill shelters are out there. \r\n\r\nI wish more people would look into a no kill shelter for a pet or any shelter for a pet before going to a pet store!

    Pros

    no kill

    Cons

    none

  • 12. A home for many

    by: hmsmiller

We adopted our female Koookie from here back in March of 2006. Kookie was heartworm positive and with heartguard each month she is now testing negative. They are a wonderful group of people and the place is always so clean and organized. They are a no kill shelter and that is what I am most thankful for. My Kookie was there for almost 2 years and we finally found each other. So for that I am always grateful for. They allowed me to bring my boy Buddy up there initially to make sure they got along okay. Well the day we showed up in 2006 it started to pour with rain. However the volunteer that was there, remained in the rain with us and was so happy at the idea that we may take her home. Well we waited a week and thought the whole thing through. My boy paid no mind to her which was a plus. So we figured what the heck, she was a sweet thing and she deserved to be spoiled and loved. Well she is that and more! Lets just say that Kookie now has her own couch even, and is the princess in the house. Buddy is no longer not paying attention to her, they play and sqwabble just like siblings, so funny. It is as though it was all meant to be and she is so happy now and I can only thank the wonderful people at the Bay Area SPCA for giving her care and love until we found each other.

    Pros

    Always caring for the animals

    Cons

Volunteer age starts at 16 & we volunteer at HHS at 14, my daughter is sad now, she is only 15.
