Yay BARC! I got my sweet Milo there 4 years ago, and I am so happy to have him. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and was helpful when I decided to adopt. I think anyone who goes there will have a good experience.

  • 4. Haven in Brooklyn...Who Knew?

    by: SYoshioka7

I had a friend who adopted a dog from BARC and the process was so easy and fun. If I lived in Brooklyn I would try to volunteer but unfortunately I am too far away to go on a regular basis. I would never have even known about BARC if a good friend hadn't introduced them to me. Maybe if they ever expand in to the city I will be able to help out!

    Pros

    Friendly, helpful staff.

    Cons

I don't know Brooklyn and if my friends hadn't been able to navigate me in the car I would have never found it!

They really helped my mom find a wonderful dog as a companion animal. They worked very hard and gave us a lot of suitable choices. In the end, my mom's new little dog won her heart. She was healthy and happy. They are a great shelter! Go see their pets!

  • 8. I love this No Kill Shelter

    by: Letty

I love the BARC Shelter. I have gotten a few animals from them. Started out with a Pekingese years ago it was love at first sight. Gimzo suffered from seizures, I had him for about two years. Then one morning he went into a seizure and never came out of it. Sorry to say we had to put him down. I have also adopted two birds from them a mexican amazon and a cockatiel. Thank you BARC for all the wonderful work you do.\r\n\r\nLetty King

    Pros

I love the people, they are wonderful.

    Cons

I wish they had more space to help many more animals.

  • 9. BARC is the best!

    by: cmm2151

I began volunteering at BARC a few months ago, in both their cat loft and walking the dogs. The place is great. Despite limited space, they'll always make room for newcomers, and it's amazing how sweet and sociable their animals are, considering the circumstances--which is certainly a testament to the care of those who work for BARC. All profits from their adjoining pet supply store go directly to the shelter, and you'll often see one or more of the cats or dogs hanging out behind the desk there. I've been taking my cat and dog to Dr. Felton, their in-house vet, for 2 years now, and she's fantastic as well.\n\nAll in all, a wonderful, much needed shelter badly in need of more space, and a makeover. Make it happen!

    Pros

    Excellent staff. NO-KILL! Sweet animals.

    Cons

    Need a lot more room.

  • 10. BARC Shelter

    by: sharonhirsch

I first found out about BARC when I volunteered their through my company. I can't say enough about such a great, dedicated group of people. They care so much about every animal there. The do a great job of matching people with animals. As a no kill shelter they get a lot of animinals no one else could deal with. And they do a wonderful job. Their webside has great information. Even the store has great products. \r\n\r\nAfter a while, we finally decided it was time to get a dog. They were wonderful at answering all my questions and helping us pick out the right pet. Pepper could not be any more perfect for us. And that is thanks to barc.

    by: jduchette

There is so much devotion at places like this. They all need help to expand their services. \r\n\r\nI wish that all animals could be so lucky to have help like this. We have so much power to help. I am so happy that no kill shelters are out there. \r\n\r\nI wish more people would look into a no kill shelter for a pet or any shelter for a pet before going to a pet store!

    Pros

    no kill

  • 12. Wonderful shelter!

    by: glitterfish

We adopted one of our cats, Suzy Q, from BARC 2 years ago. Since then we have moved to Minnesota. BARC is a great no kill shelter that takes great care of their animals. Clean but small. A little tricky to find, we drove past it a few times! We also volunteered twice for dog walking and it was a great experience!

    Pros

    No-kill shelter, knowledgeable staff

    Cons

Very small, needs to be bigger to save more animals!

  • 15. The Best Shelter Around!

    by: catluvr55

I have been volunteering at BARC's cat shelter for a few years, and I always find it a most enjoyable experience. I have also walked their dogs a few times. They truly care for and about their animals. Each has a name and a personality posted on the cage. Those that roam free are well known to the staff and volunteers. Much time is spent keeping the cages and the rooms clean, and giving love and attention to the animals. They are particular about what animal is placed in which home, to be sure the best interests of both human and animal are best served. It's a terrific place!

    Pros

    Very knowledgeable and loving staff

    Cons

    Not-a-one!

  • 16. It's a lucky cat that makes it to BARC

    by: brookboy

My wife and I started volunteering at B.A.R.C. about three and a half years ago, and we've never looked back. Strays live a hard life, especially in Brooklyn, so the cats that make it to this no-kill shelter are in luck. B.A.R.C. serves a real need in the community, and they do a terrific job, given that they don't have any funding outside of donations.\r\n\r\nWhen we go to B.A.R.C. for our volunteer project we are always torn between wanting to see our old feline friends, and hoping they have been adopted.\r\n\r\nB.A.R.C. represents real good and does a terrific job with such limited resources. If you're in Brooklyn you should drop by and purchase some cat or dog food and chat with the friendly staff.

    Pros

    Caring, knowledgeable staff

    Cons

In desperate need of a makeover
