  • 1. They are the best without fail.

    by: celticdragonfyre

I have worked with the staff at the ACC Animal Control for years both professionally and personally. I have adopted from them and worked with them on animal cruelty cases. There are no more amazing people that I would rather work with than the people at ACC. They are a truly dedicated bunch that will do anything to help out the animals that are there, to include taking them home to help! \r\nOn the side of prosecution, they have attended classes that I have tried to teach them (sorry guys!) and done everything in their power, to include buying their own equipment, to make sure that they have what they need to prosecute these cases. They are amazing, and I am proud to say that I work with them when I am called to.\r\n\r\nDetective Rebecca Croxton

    Pros

always helpful...great staff, professional and courteous

    Cons

not enough money or resources to help as much as they want to!

  • 2. I have adopted from ACC Animal Control

    by: MrsJGray

I have adopted two dogs from Athens Clarke County Animal Control over the last few years. The people here are very nice and very rescue friendly. They welcome visitors and are in desperate need of volunteers and donated supplies. Go to their web page at Athenspets.net and they have a wish list of things they need to help the animals stay there a little more enjoyable.

    Pros

    Nice employees, rescue friendly

    Cons

    Desperate for volunteers

  • 3. Athens-Clarke NEEDS this makeover

    by: EMStickney

Please help us get Athens-Clarke County the facility it needs. With a campus full of students feeding strays, or taking in pets, but not bringing them home when they graduate we need a makeover!

    Pros

It's local and they try to place dogs

    Cons

    It needs a larger facility

  • 4. if only it weren't a kill shelter...

    by: smousel

To be fair, I haven't been to the Athens-Clarke County Animal Control in about 7 years, so my review isn't terribly up to date. When I was last there, I adopted my wonderful little aussie shepherd mix, Maggi. She was found with her brother, and they were held together in one pen. They had a fenced in interaction area, and I was encouraged to spend as much time with her as I liked, which I thought was really great. The staff were helpful, but it was clear that they have too little funds, too little help, and far too many animals to deal with. It was heartbreaking to know that for every animal placed in a home, there were others who wouldn't be so lucky. Kill shelters are outlawed in other countries - Germany, for example, has very few strays and no kill shelters. We can find another way, if we try.

    Pros

    nice fenced in interaction areas

    Cons

    kill shelter with little funds

  • 5. Great place, they try their best

    by: acemjm

I go to ACCAC every now and then to take the pups out and give them treats....sometimes some of the front desk people aren't super friendly, but I don't know how chipper I'd be if I knew that so many of these dogs would have to be put down. Nevertheless, between ACCAC and the folks who run athenspets.net, the dogs have a great chance of being adopted and it's obvious that a lot of people care about this shelter.

    Pros

Clean, low adoption fee, free microchip

    Cons

    Kill shelter

  • 6. Wonderful Shelter!

    by: mlank25

I love volunteering at this shelter because all of the dogs are loving and very cute. The staff is great and always willing to help out with whatever is needed. Unfortunately, the shelter is a bit dirty and is in dire need of a makeover because it seems very old and needs some "freshening up".

    Pros

Very wonderful and cute dogs that are all worthy of adoption!

    Cons

It is a dirty, run-down site.

  • 7. Cool place.

    by: Peanut3459

Yall have a wonderful place and website. My family is thinking about adopting a dog from there. :) And I hope that they do, he/she would be a wonderful add-on to the family.

    Cons

    None

  • 8. Great Place!

    by: cleoandtori

The people here are always so loving and helpful. They really need a lot more people to work and volunteer there as they are really understaffed. The animals are precious, but they are limited to space. A make over would really help them expand.

    Pros

    loving people, cute animals

    Cons

kill shelter, small area for animals, understaffed

  • 9. Fantastic Shelter

    by: VetGK

First of all, this place is awesome! The people are very loving and helpful. They are understaffed, but they do the best with what they're given. Hopefully, they can win the makeover so they can expand the facility and hire some more people.

    Pros

lots of loving people and animals

    Cons

    space limited, understaffed

  • 10. Amazing Shelter!

    by: melslgeacy

Staff is always willing to give you information and really pays attention to the animals!

    Pros

    Cons

  • 11. Wonderful people, puppies!

    by: seemesmilebig

I really like this shelter. The staff is so loving and helpful. There is definitely not enough room for all of the animals there.

    Pros

wonderful staff, lots of animals to pick from

    Cons

understaffed, not enough room for all of the animals

  • 12. I wish I could bring them all home

    by: mas12286

We got our first dog from here who is very good and was trained well. A lot of the volunteers work with training the dogs there. Also, the volunteers do a lot of PR to try and get the dogs there adopted!

    Pros

    Good volunteers

    Cons

    too many dogs without homes

  • 13. Great effort, people!

    by: mollymelin

I adopted an owner surrender dog from AAC just a couple weeks ago, and go every week to give treats and food to the pups. The staff is great, and I only wish they were a no-kill shelter! Maybe with this makeover they'd gain enough space and get enough attention to make that happen. By the way, be sure to go to fellow AAC supporters on this site and look at their product reviews.....by marking them as "helpful," the user gets 5 extra points! It's an easy way to gain points for our shelter. Great job everyone!

    Pros

Well maintained facility, helpful staff, many volunteers, great community support

    Cons

    Not a no-kill shelter...YET

  • 19. great shelter!

    by: grifter

These guys are awesome! They really care about the animals. However, they need some help. They are way understaffed which limits what they can do. They should really be considered for this make over.

    Pros

    excellent staff

    Cons

    understaffed

  • 23. Volunteer

    by: anr401

There are a lot of volunteers, wonderful staff, and always LOTS of dogs! The ACC shelter really needs this makeover! They have a really high adoption rate, but unfortunately they fill up quickly!

    Pros

GREAT staff! They really care about the animals and do everything they can!

    Cons

It's not big enough to hold very many animals!

  • 24. Happy with the shelter but of course it could be better

  • 25. For all the other reviewers

    by: dvergar

For all the previous reviewers, please pay attention to your ratings. Several of you have given wonderful reviews in text, but you have (I hope) inadvertently selected "1 of 5" in the star ratings. Unfortunately that is the default, and unless you change it, that's what shows up no matter how kind your text review is. I don't know if you can change your "stars" rating after the fact, but if you can, please do. If anyone knows how to do this, please let us all know!

    Pros

    Knowledgeable, dedicated and caring staff

    Cons

    Funding

  • 26. These guys are AWESOME!

    by: cindyalexander

We just adopted our boy Jack from this shelter. Everyone was so helpful and the adoption process was very organized, but not burdensom. THANK ACCAC!

    Pros

    Great staff---they're friendly and helpful

    Cons

kill shelter- a sad but necessary evil

  • 27. Good Place

    by: twirl04

This is a good shelter. The staff truly cares about the animals. They are limited to space and could truly benefit from the makeover.

    Pros

    Good staff

    Cons

    Needs a makeover!

  • 28. Caring staff

    by: quackers

I got my dog from this shelter almost 2 years ago and had a wonderful experience. The staff is caring and works hard to place all the dogs with responsible owners. My dog was on her last days there but the staff were putting in fake applications just to keep her alive a few more days! The website is great and well-maintained, I have to admit I'm addicted to looking at all the cute pups there. It's small and old though, and a ton of pups come through there every day, so please vote for it in Ellen's million dollar makeover! The bigger this place is the longer the lost pups will have to find their forever homes!

    Pros

caring staff, works hard to place pets

    Cons

    this is a kill facility

  • 29. Where animals are loved

    by: LaLaLaLaura

I regularly volunteer at this shelter and work with a rescue group that pulls dogs from here. The staff is so knowledgeable and it's obvious that they really care about the animals. They usually have a large selection of dogs, puppies and adults, big and small...come on in and pick up your newest family member!

    Pros

great staff, large selection of animals, animals well cared for

    Cons

too small to hold all the animals in need

  • 30. Neuter is cuter!

    by: meowwoofma

    Neuter is cuter!

    Pros

    Another starfish saved!

    Cons

Not every starfish saved finds a furever home though.

  • 31. Always look here when you want to add a furry friend to your home!

    by: mgogo

Animal Control is always the place to check if you want to add a dog to your family! So many deserving dogs and puppies are not given a chance due to the irresponsibility of some members of the community.\n\nThe dogs and puppies are socialized with people and other dogs, sometimes even cats! The staff and volunteers are very honest about each animal's social personality, and will let you know if they think they should be an "only dog," if they need an animal companion, or if they enjoy/dislike being around children.\n\nThe staff is well versed and helpful, and genuinely want to find homes or rescue for as many of their charges as possible. I commend the staff on a job well done and with a lot of heart.

    Pros

    large facility, helpful staff

    Cons

only outdoor holding facilities for the animals

  • 32. Kayla

    by: lax28

I adopted my first dog (on my own) from here. If I didn't get her - she would have been put down the following morning. She's the best dog I've had in my life. Thank you, thank you!! \r\nIf it hadn't been for an amazing volunteer... I might not have adopted my dog.

    Pros

Friendly, caring volunteers. Everyone here is amazing - only positive experiences

    Cons

they don't have much room and often have to put down many animals

  • 33. Tons of great dogs

    by: kathyd85

ACC Animal Control is usually filled to the brim with wonderful dogs looking for homes. As someone who can't have a dog right now, I often spend time at the shelter walking the dogs. The staff have no problem with people coming by simply to play; they are knowledgeable about the dogs and seem to care about them. I was initially a little put off by the inmates working there, but over time have realized that the men are actually very eager to help!

    Pros

Always have large selection of dogs (unfortunately)

    Cons

It's sometimes hard to find a staff person.

  • 34. Great service!

    by: katemac685

This shelter has a great selection of dogs! Some volunteers have set up a website to view the dogs, which greatly increases the chance the dogs will be adopted. Not only do they put up one or two good-sized pictures of each dog, but they give a detailed description of each! Because of their hard work, i found my best friend, Scuba. There's very little chance I would have been able to find him without the website.\r\nThe people working and volunteering there are very nice, welcoming, and helpful. I would definitely recommend this shelter!

    Pros

    Hard-working volunteers, great selection

    Cons

    small facility

  • 35. Great Staff

    by: lakota757

They all do the very best they can with what they have. They need so much more space with inside kennels.

    Pros

    Great Staff

    Cons

    Needs much more space

  • 36. ACC Animal Control

    by: nanachase

This is a clean and friendly shelter but in dire need of money to save the lives of all the animals.

    Pros

They do everthing they can to save animals

    Cons

Athens Clarke Co. Animal Shelter needs a bigger facility to house all the strays, surrenders, etc. they receive

  • 37. Do everything they can for the dogs

    by: mollyaz

This is an animal control unit - a dog pound. Ever staff member loves the animals they deal with and I know the people who work at the desk call everyshelter and rescue group in the area and sometimes beyond, to save dogs from being put down.

    Pros

The staff and their love for the animals

    Cons

it is a kill shelter - that is policy, not malice

  • 38. nice shelter

    by: sch487

This is a really nice shelter for the resources that they have. I used to volunteer here a lot in high school for class, walking and bathing the dogs, and the staff was always very accommodating. I also made a little documentary on dog overpopulation for a class and they were very willing to give interviews and help me out however they could.

    Pros

    well fenced, caring staff

    Cons

    small, limited resources

  • 39. Animal Control gave me my best friend...

    by: mwood86

This past summer, I adopted my beautiful puppy from animal control after volunteering several times there taking the dogs around for walks. If people don't volunteer or come to look at the dogs, many times they don't even get let out of their cages. I found her and knew I would get her. She has been such an amazing dog, and I thank Athens Animal Control because without them, I never would have found my best friend.

    Pros

Many very sweet dogs, nice setup

    Cons

    Unfriendly desk staff

  • 40. Lots of volunteers

    by: jaggedhorses

I am always amazed at how many volunteers there are working at this shelter. It is a nice clean shelter, I just wish there was more room so they could keep more dogs longer.

    Pros

    lots of dogs

    Cons

    not a lot of space

  • 41. Great place to find a new friend!

    by: ems08

I adopted a cute little dog from here in October of 2007. They were really easy to work with and one the waiting period was over all I had to do was fill out a short amount of paperwork and take my new friend home! I would definitely recommend adopting from here especially since you are saving the life of a helpless pooch!

    Pros

Great place to find a new friend! They have a website that they update often so you can see who all is available and the adoption fee is really inexpensive considering that you get shots and a rebate on a neuter/spay

    Cons

Unfortunately this isn't a humane society so animals here only have a limited amount of time. Owner surrenders get even less time because no one is looking for them.

  • 42. Fantastic Staff - many homeless needy pups!

    by: staci

Animal Control is always the place to check if you want a new dog! They have 30 pens and usually a wide array of dogs and puppies to choose from (due to irresponsible members of our community). I volunteer here regularly and take photos of the animals - the staff are careful to temperament test the dogs and give them many chances to get adopted. They work very hard to find rescue for those that do not receive adoption applications. The staff are very friendly, knowledgeable, and compassionate, and work hard to improve the treatment and lives of animals in Athens Clarke County. Unfortunately, dogs do not get to wait at ACCAC indefinitely - their holding period is only 5 days, and they do euthanize weekly. Please visit athenspets.net to see the adoptable dogs!

    Pros

very compassionate staff, healthy dogs, exercise pens

    Cons

    short holding times

  • 43. Lots of dogs to adopt here. Friendly staff.

    by: lmw84

This facility is reasonably nice for an animal control shelter. There are always a bunch of dogs to choose from (not sure if that's really a good thing...). The staff here are pretty friendly and helpful. They seem to have a pretty thorough adoption process. The dogs are kept in covered outdoor kennels, so I do wish they had a closed facility for some of their dogs.

    Pros

Lots of dogs to choose from. Great adoption staff.

    Cons

I wish the dogs were kept in a more enclosed area.

  • 44. Lots of animals available for adoption!

    by: courtneymerrow

This is a well run animal control. There are usually a large variety of dogs available if you are looking to adopt. There are pens you can take the dogs in to socialize with them as well.

    Pros

Many different dogs to choose from, caring staff and volunteers.

    Cons

    Usually full..

  • 45. Very Helpful

    by: tburge

I found a dog on the side of the road, and was unable to foster it. The staff at the ACC Animal Control were very nice in helping me out. When I called to check on the dog I had taken, I found out that she was adopted the day before!

    Pros

Make a unpleasant experience a little better

    Cons

    you can't save everybody...
