They work tirelessly to find a place for every cat, bunny, and small animal that comes through their doors. Will work with an adopting family to make sure everything works out.

Treat every pet as if it's their own

    Almost no budget

The AAHS has worked extremely hard to add new services. They have the new spay and neuter center and have opened a second adoption center in the Athens Pet Supplies Plus. They are caring and work hard to find the right homes for the animals they care for. \nI got my girl-cat Minerva(orig. Rory) from AAHS and she's been a real doll from day one. The AAHS gave me a huge bundle of stuff to go home with her when I adopted her and made extra sure I knew what I was getting into.

Always willing to help, working hard to enhance the lives of homeless animals

    I can't think of any!

The experienced people who staff the outreach center at Pet Supplies Plus are extremely helpful. They are always willing to talk about the shelter's cats and welcome everyone to the center (even if you want to just go and play with kitties!)

Have great selection of cats and kittens

More people need to donate $!!

  • 5. Tetra was my first cat and was adopted from AAHS

    by: meowwoofma

Tetra was my first cat and came from the AAHS in 1992. She was the best cat ever (went to the bridge at 18 years old in 2006)!!

    Tetra came from there

    I couldn't adopt them all

The Athens Area Humane Society has some of the most caring individuals I've met working with these animals.\nI visit the adoption center on a regular basis, and the animals are always clean and happy. They are making amazing strides in their adoption rates (over 500 in 2007!), and reducing their rates of euthanasia (which dropped 98% for healthy animals last year!).\n\nThe staff is refreshingly honest and always willing to help and give advice, even years after you've adopted your friend(s)! They were exceptionally upfront when I adopted a cat and was told that he had been adopted a couple of weeks before and returned for being too rambunctious - but for me, he was perfect!\n\nThey always do what is best for our fuzzy friends. One example in particular is a pair of brothers that were the last of a litter. They were so attached to each other that separating them would have been horrible. The AAHS held out for the perfect family that adopted them both, rather than accept the numerous offers to take just one.\n\nIf you are interested in adopting a cat or another small animal (rabbit, mouse, hamster, etc.) these are the people to see!

honest and knowledgeable staff, animals are all well loved and taken care of, clean

  • 7. Fabulous shelter - really great people!

Athens Area Humane Society is a great shelter - open admission but they get all their healthy animals new homes! These folks work tirelessly for homeless small pets in our area - the new adoption outreach center at Pet Supplies Plus is really great, and seems to be increasing adoptions. This is a wonderful shelter with very helpful staff - please visit if you are looking for a new companion!

great shelter, great staff, excellent outreach, wonderful pets!

shelter is small, but they do what they can
