Make sure to write down the ID numbers of any animal you're interested in meeting so staff can find them. There are so many animals they cannot find them by name.

    Pros

    Many,many wonderfuls dogs and cats

    Cons

    Atmosphere of a prison

  • 2. AHS - Newark, NJ ABUSES ITS ANIMALS! PLEASE READ.

    by: animalrights

Hello, I'm the president of a student run organization called Rutgers United for the Welfare of Animals. If you care about animals and preserving their safety and welfare, please look at this: http://cnj.craigslist.org/pet/1425102395.html There you will find a link to pictures of this shelter. They leave animals with their own feces, many of them have infections, are in the most disgusting of environments, and the people paid to run this get paid over $100,000 to run this place! It is despicable! Please get the work out about this animal slaughterhouse.

    Pros

    Big Facility

    Cons

    Do not use their

  • 3. AHS Newark a nice shelter

    by: helengbwoman

We went to the Newark shelter some years ago when we adopting one of our dogs. All the dogs there were kept very nice. We actually took a dog that someone was just about to bring into the shelter (a long story), but it was one of the sweetest dogs we ever owned.

    Pros

    Nicely kept

    Cons

    None

  • 4. seems like things are getting better

    by: aurora

it seems like ahs-newark is moving in the right direction. i've seen more pit bulls being put up for adoption and they seem to be making more of an effort to move in the direction of the progressive animal shelter. they still have a long way to go though - the staff is a little rough around the edges and their location doesn't help.

    Pros

    seems to be improving

    Cons

still a long way to go

  • 5. Never been, but heard horrible things

    by: Margarel

I don't have the heart to go this shelter. I've heard so many horrible things about it. Although this should encourage others to adopt from here since the conditions are not great.

    Pros

    ????

    Cons

    Lots

  • 6. Hmmm... need more aggressive adoption programs

    by: shadrack

Difficult task for a shelter with so many contracts. Their kill rates are obscene! I would like to see better adoption outreach programs.

    Pros

    improving - Caring staff

    Cons

    Euthanasia rates are OBSCENE

  • 7. A Great Place!

    by: sshortandccrazyx

A couple months ago my friend and I raised $200 by selling home-made bracelets. We donated the money to the Humane Society and they apprecitated every dollar. Its a non profitable organization, 100% of the money goes to the animals! They were very appreciative and I think they would love to have more donations and familys adopt from there. :)

    Pros

They really know what their doing!

    Cons

More people need to adopt from there.
