I love the ASPCA. It is by far the best organization ever! I donate and support whenever I can. They inspire me to make a difference every day. I want to go to NY and visit sometime. I am so thankful for so many people that work hard everyday to help animals.

    by: Maddiemoney

We have worked with the ASPCA for many years and they are an admirable organization of kind hearted, intelligent and sharing people. They are always willing to share their experiences and help. I recently visited their shelter and was impressed with their staff and the quality of care of the pets. On that particular day they were hosting several rescue groups at their medical center and hosting a spay/nueter event. I highly recommend them.

The ASPCA was the first humane organization in the Western Hemisphere. The mission, as stated by founder, Henry Bergh, in 1866, is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States.” They provide a wide range of service including adoption, medical, legislative and social awareness.

    by: norap

Love the A. Not only do they operate a great shelter that is very people friendly and gives great enrichment to the animals--no easy feat considering their location--but they are available and supportive to all of us in animal welfare. They are a fabulous resource and in crises they coordinate things well in order for us to all work together. Great staff who know their stuff and share it with joy. Their outreach programs benefit us all.

  • 8. Wonderful partner!

    by: drambuie

Our shelter takes advantage of being in close proximity to the ASPCA. Their knowledgeable staff provide endless educational workshops for shelter staff and have also developed some phenomenal programs such as the Meet Your Match Adoption Program. It is comforting to know we have a partner who shares our vision for animals.

  • 9. great organization

    by: amgfnyc

I adopted my dog Rosie from the ASPCA. They hardly need a review! Everyone knows what a wonderful organization this is. The facility is beautiful. They have a wonderful volunteer program, and a spectacular veterinary facility that offers low-cost vet care. The ASPCA is located in a relatively non-congested part of NYC, so parking is relatively easy. I recommend that everyone donate to them, and adopt from them if you live in the area.

    Pros

    cutting edge animal rescue

    Cons

    none!

  • 10. Mostly a great place

    by: ALLPETSMOM

When my dog ate a whole double chocolate cake I took a cab straight to the Aspca They took her immedietly she had to stay over night everything was great till I went to pick her up the next morning. I had adopted her from some one who can no longer take care of her about a year before the incident, SO she was still in his name at the aspca and when I went to pick her up even after I had payed for everything they said they would not release her to me. I fought for my dog back saying that I have had her for a year and her shots liscence and microchip are all in my name. Yet they would still not give her back to me. They said that the previous owner had to come down there and get her. BUt he could not and they could not do it over the phone. ONly after I got histerical and started crying as I already had missed my dog was worried about her and now they would not give her back to me. THen they said to me the worst most horrible thing they could say. WE should'nt have even taken her in in the first place because I wasnt the owner they had on record. God FORBID some dog gets hit by a car and some one else brings it in they arent going to help??? THey finally gave her back to me after talking to the previous owner on the phone and saying this was the only time they would make this exception. BUt besides that they do alot for animals.

    Pros

THey save and help alot of animals

    Cons

THey will only take a pet from owner in an emergency

  • 12. My wonderful cat was adopted from the ASPCA

    by: EmilyH

I got my first cat from the ASPCA shelter in Manhattan. It was hard to choose from so many, but the workers there really knew the different cats and worked with me to choose a compatible cat. I was very impressed with how professional and knowledgeable they were about animal care in general and about the specific animals they are caring for there. It was a great adoption experience and I would recommend them to anyone.

    Pros

genius staff, very supportive, I got a great cat

    Cons

    so many animals need homes

  • 18. First Experience

    by: DawnLight

The NYC ASPCA is HUGE. It is on 92nd St. close to the East River. This was my 1st time there.\n\nI went there @ 10 yrs. ago with my daughter. She was just going to look, but not adopt that day. But I wondered what would really happen. You know, seeing all those poor animals. Mother knows best...:) \n\nI had been in animal shelters before. But this one was HUGE! Hundreds of cats and dogs. This was so sad to see so many animals needing homes, but then, good to know that the ASPCA rescues so many!! \n\nThe first thing that hits you when you walked in was the loud noises of the animals...esp. barking of dogs. And then the animal smell. This is all understandable as there are so many animals. All were in cages, that I saw at that time.\n\nBut all the noise and smells soon fade as one looks at the animals in the cages...and wanting to help every one. So many looking at you, "Take me! Take Me!" They attempt to jump-up into your arms trough the cage bars.\n\nNYC is big and it must be a horror to be a stray in the City. I once saw a beautiful young, all-black cat walking on the sidewalk. It was in a part of the city that could be very dangerous for this cat. As we all know, there are people who abuse a stray...and then there are those who grab them as bait for the dog-fighting that is so prevalent in NYC. \n\nI felt this cat had to be a stray as it was thin...but it was a young cat, and they can be thin. Also, I know there are people in the City who let their pet cats go out, as if it were the suburbs. But I made the decision to try and get the cat, take a taxi to the ASPCA. But he/she ran away so fast from me...out of sight. If I had my cell phone with me I would have called the ASPCA!\n\n\n\n \n\n \n\n

    Pros

    Many cats & dogs

    Cons

    Loud, animal smells

  • 19. great organization

    by: horsencl

While they aren't perfect, I think their show on Animal Planet is enough to earn them a good review. No other organization has been able to achieve so much. They bring animal cruelty to the forefront, when it is often forgotten. I think it also helps make sure that people understand that there are consequences for their actions. Their clinic is relatively low prices and enables low income people to get help for their pets. I do wish they had more agents, NYC is so large that there is no way they can follow up on every call at their current size.

    Pros

    They do great work

    Cons

They could do more if they had more resources and legal support

  • 20. A Group that Needs to Be Cloned!

    by: rjlupinskat

Words cannot say how much respect this group commands from me. I would love to work for them were they also represented in my area in brick and mortar form.\n\nIf you have any question as to their devotion, check out Animal Planet or the ASPCA website. Of all the national shelter organizations, to me the ASPCA is the best.

    Pros

    Tough on abusers; vigilant

    Cons

Like everyone else, based on donations

  • 21. wow

    by: katieeusebio

i have such a deep respect for these people who go out every day and sometimes even put themselves in danger just to ensure that these animals get the chance to lead the lives they deserve. These people are saints and i hope they all get the respect and appreciation that they deserve in new york and all over the country.

    Pros

    wonderful people

    Cons

    theres not one in kentucky!

  • 22. First adoption of pet from ASPCA

    by: KayNYC

Over the years, we have adopted cats and dogs from rescue organizations and shelters. Saturday was our first time adopting from the ASPCA van on Broadway in Manhattan. \r\nThe van environment was well maintained and equiped: the staff were helpful, as well as informative. The adoption procedure painless. We adopted an adult cat, which makes us a three cat and one dog household. Perhaps our only negative experience was getting the mats out of her long hair and the difficulty with release of the rabies vaccination tag number that the Petco groomer requested before she would make an appointment for the cat's grooming.I was told by an ASPCA volunteer, on the telephone yesterday, that the staff told her this information is not released nor had groomers required such information in the past. Interestly enough, I have gotten the rabies tag number and date from NYCACC in the past for my Persian cat without any problem. I have also received the actual tag from a rescue group where we adopted our Turkish Angora mix two years ago.To make a long story short, I worked out the mats (I think it would have been nice if they removed the mats before she was put out for public display- ok, perhaps unrealistic) and I purchased a Furmanator cat shedding tool that was excellent for the job of shedding old hair after the mats were removed. She now has a beautiful shiny black coat and is showing normal adjustment to her new home. I checked with another groomer who did not require the tag number, only the rabies vaccination date. Needless to say, although they get a good portion of my patronage, I won't be using Petco for grooming anytime in the near future. Overall, our experience with adoption through the ASPCA was good.

    Pros

Clear adoption policy. Convenient location;Good history of cat and observations about her tempermen.

    Cons

difficulty getting rabies tag number that I requested for our groomer who requires it before rendering services

  • 23. Why isn't animal suffering more visible?

    by: Susin1

I don't know what it is going to take to solve the issue of animal abuse and over population. You can't make someone be more human/humane...There is such ignorance when it comes to dogs/cats etc. I still hear people, educated people, say that dogs can live outside in the winter because they don't feel cold. It enrages me. I wish more corporations took this on as a valid concern. It's just so upsetting. In the US we are supposed to be so developed yet the abuses still continue. In other countires, I can only imagine how much worse the problem is. I wish we allotted money to create a system that kept pets from abusers, just the way we protect children. To me they are just as precious. A mandatory system of spaying and neutering, a way to enforce animal abuse laws and eradicate puppy mills!

    Pros

    Help Resue Animals

    Cons

Still have to put so many to death

Every time I see the ASPCA ad on tv I start to cry. It really rings home on how many animals are treated. Thank god for the ASPCA. They go out and investigate these cruelty cases and prosecute the owners when necessary. Little Shelter is proud to say that one of the ASPCA agents started her animal career with us - Annmarie Lucas. A true inspiration to animal lovers everywhere!

  • 34. Wonderful, Wonderful Organization

    by: Kgulathomas

I can't say enough good things about "The A". I recently brought a critically injured sweet little feral cat into "The A" to see if they could help her. It was 7pm and they rushed her in to do anything they could for her. After sedating and examining her they determined that her suffering was so great, and her prognosis so grim that the most humane thing was to put her to sleep. As we put her to sleep, all of us cried and sent her to a more peaceful place -- the VET, the nurse and the volunteer ALL Cried. They then washed out the carrier for me and sent me home -- NO BILL !!!!! You don't see that very often !! People who truly care and are trying to help.

    Pros

Very caring staff (including volunteers), innovative programs

    Cons

    None

  • 35. excelent organization

My dog medical insurance is from their web site. They do such good work for animal rights awareness

    Pros

    contant work for animals

    Cons

none are great if load is too heavy and wet

  • 36. Advocate group

    by: lady66

This group is great when it comes to advocating for the legal rights of any type of animal, and especially in prosecuting abusers. They are able to have staff that rehabilitate some animals that would otherwise be automatically euthanized at the NYCACC, and their high visibility (television shows, etc.) allows them to educate a broader spectrum of the public about issues that lots of us small rescues advocate, but aren't able to reach as many people.

    Pros

Lots of resources and visibility heighten public awareness

    Cons

When out of room they send to the high-kill shelter of NYC

  • 37. A wonderful organization

    by: constable73

I love this organization. They help alot of animals. They have the funding to go after owners of neglect and abuse. I hope our area gets a little more support to eliminate some of these things.

    Pros

    Stands for animals

    Cons

    do not have one locally

  • 38. love the TV show

    by: AdamthePitbullLover

The show on animal planet has my full attention every time it's on...even though my girlfriend doesnt care for it (cuz it makes her sad). Although the images are often graphic, i believe it is a necessary thing people need to see. When CNN talks about all the money we're stealing from wealthy americans to give for poor people who dont have money because they cant get a job, they should mention the unimaginable number of dogs on the street that are only malnourished because of those same ignorant, sick people that dump and abuse animals...especially dog fighters. Why cant there be harsher penalties afforded to these inhumane a$$holes?

    Pros

Gets the information out, helps many animals

    Cons

    ASPCA is only one organization

  • 39. The premier Animal Shelter

    by: NYCSmith

I remember when the ASPCA was a local New York City organization but now it is a nationwaide advocacy group. They do so much!!! I adopted two wonderful companions from the "A" and I am eternally in their debt for the many years of love and joy I have received. The adoption process is thorough but not onerous and on both ocassions I took home my new friend the same day. I have seen the humane officers in action in my neighborhood and I know the great work they do. They are the best!

    Pros

The number one shelter in the country

    Cons

  • 40. Wonderful Organization!

    by: ereyes

This is a wonderful organization! I've given money to them before and they were very grateful to have received such a meager amount (it was a dollar) as a donation. These people do a lot for animals and to end animal cruelty. There's nothing they can't do! In the future, I will looking into their credit card program and annual membership. If I could, I'd adopt an animal from them! For those of you who live in the NYC area and are looking for a pet, DEFINITELY check out the ASPCA! They rock!

    Pros

Very knowledgeable, cares about animals, majority of funds goes directly to the animals

    Cons

  • 46. I love ASPCA!

    by: LaurenS

I love ASPCA. As far as the "big name" nationally known animal welfare groups, ASPCA is my favorite. They do a lot of good work. I really appreciate that they do mobile spay/neuter clinics in low income areas. They get a lot of publicity through the show Animal Precinct on Animal Planet, and this is good. It's always good to have animal welfare issues receiving public attention. I hope someday to work for the ASPCA, maybe after I graduate from college next year. I trust the ASPCA and respect them, whereas I am very wary of some of the other big names (like PETA. . . aka the devil)

    Pros

    fabulous proactive pet rescue agency!

    Cons

    none that I know of
