  • 1. Needs your support

    by: lilyrose

These people do a wonderful job! They really care for the animals and do a good job of matching people with adoptees. They get so many animals each year, they need your donations! I have supported them the best I can every year. The animals deserve it!

    Pros

    Caring Staff

    Cons

    Too many animals

  • 2. I am so pleased with their openess to small animals

    by: lalagimp

When I needed another rat to keep my Jane company after her mate died, I wanted to find one that would make a good fit. I wanted to find one that needed someone, that wasn't already spoiled by a rescue. I found April on their website and went down. They let me browse all the small animals behind the counter and seemed genuinely concerned about all the rats they had on supply. They even took the time to confirm with my apartment complex that there were no rules against my obtaining my rat. There is an onsite pet shop so buy some "getting started" items before you go or just needing a light stock.

    Pros

Wide selection of animals and friendly staff

    Cons

location, but it helps to keep costs down

I volunteer at AHS and it is in definite need of a makeover! It is cramped, dark, depressing. It is the dedicated people there that make it a great place. Their love for the animals that makes the place shine!

    by: azkami

We just adopted our new kitty from the AZ Humane Society and the experience was great! From how easy it was to find and look at the animals they had available for adoption online to walking out the door with our new kitty - the whole experience was wonderful! The staff was so nice and we were never left standing or waiting around for someone to help. They make the adoption process quick and painless for both adopter and adoptee :). We will continue to return to the AZ Humane Society for any of our animal needs! They're grrrreat! :)

    Pros

very friendly staff, clean and lots of benefits!

    Cons

  • 6. 50,000 a year?!? wow!

you guys really work hard!\r\nYou are able - through your "open door" policy - to take in 50,000 animals per year! ???\r\nWOW !!\r\nThat is a ton of animals. It sounds as if many get adopted. What about the rest?\r\n\r\ncontinue good for work for the animals of Arizona (I was born in Yuma and raised in Tucson - I love the desert!)

    volunteers are very helpful

    Cons

    Sunnyslope facility needs upgrades!

  • 11. Great people @ Sunnyslope

    by: barnkat

On 3/11/08 my husband and I decided it was time to adopt another cat (our last one passed away 2 years ago). Having searched online, we decided to look at the AHS Sunnyslope facility. It was slightly difficult to find (lots of turns and a little off the beaten path), and the parking wasn't clear (we parked on the street side, not knowing adoptions was an area and parking lot in the back). We wound our way between buildings and into the cat area, where we found some incredibly caring volunteers. Although we had gone there with the intention of looking at "Merlin" (a male Maine Coon), my husband found himself drawn to a small female Torbie and they were soon bonding. Since Merlin was listed as "unknown" for interacting with other cats, I looked around and found another female - a Tabby with definite Maine Coon background - and we ended up going home with two. It would have been three if the shelter had let us introduce Merlin to the girls to see if they would get along, but due to health concerns, all cats are kept strictly separate (since all are tested for FeLV and other diseases before going into the cages for adoption, this seems like something that could be more flexible). My husband is over 60 and one of the two girls was over 5, so we ended up with a double discount and walked away with both for $25! With this and the free vet visit, bowls, collars, & tags (and a discount if we come back for another within a month), who could pass it up!

    Pros

    Caring staff

    Cons

Not easy to get to from the West Valley

  • 12. Great place to work

I work here and we do the best we can with each and every animal to care for it while it's in our care and help it find a good loving home when it leaves our care. It's a great place to work, everyone is really nice and tries to help everyone if they have any questions or need help. Keep up the good work guys.

    by: mhaw10

I have been fostering cats and kittens for about one year. The staff is always friendly and helpful. There is a great thrift store at the Sunny Slope site where many gently used items are available and some new items. I have purchased many things there. I get great deals and the profits go the the Arizona Humane Society.

    Pros

Helping animals that need extra care before finding forever homes

    Cons

Become attached to some and its hard to take them back

    by: CZahn

Everyone at this facility has the best interest of the animals in mind. They don't forget about the people that love them either. This very clean facility has a friendly and knowledgeable staff. We are so lucky to have this in our state!

    Pros

    Everything

    Cons

Wish they had more locations or one closer to me.

  • 17. Very caring place

    by: Karenk602

I volunteer and foster for AZ Humane Society. They really try to do the best they can for each animal to heal them, make them comfortable and find them a new home. They have a fleet of Emergency Medical ambulances that cover the area to rescue animals. The Animal Planet station has taped great shows about what they do.

    Pros

Really tries to save and find good home for each animal.

    Cons

They now require a fee to accept a turn-in.

  • 18. Great organization...

  • 19. bright and soothing

    by: alyjo85

The AZ Humane Society is a wonderful place that you hope no animal ends up. Not because they wouldn't find love and care there but because that would mean their previous owner or previous life was no good. The facilities at South Mountain are clean and bright, creating a happy and soothing environment for the animals. I volunteer there and am always amazed at the compassion and devotion to creating a better world for all animals that I come across while there

    Pros

great environment and staffers that care a great deal for these animals

    Cons

    A bit of a drive

  • 20. This is a hard working shelter!

    by: azturfgal

Hopefully you have seen their efforts on Animal Planet Heroes. The emergency medical responders are amazing. This shelter works very hard to make a difference for animals in the community. They can never have enough space to meet the need, but they try hard.\r\n\r\nI currently have 2 cats living with me that I adopted from this shelter. They have been wonderful companions. I have previously had one dog and two other cats from this shelter that lived long happy lives and are waiting now at the rainbow bridge.\r\n\r\nIf you are in the Phoenix area, do not go to a pet shop or look in the classified ads, go to this shelter and save a life!

    Pros

animals are a priority, emergency clinic is a real jewel

    Cons

need more space to help more!

  • 21. A Chance for Many

    by: chloeANDbilly

I have had a couple of homeless cats wind up on my doorstep. \r\nWhen they have been super friendly and I have tried for a couple of weeks to find their owner or someone else to take them but was unsuccessful, I have brought them to the Arizona Humane Society.\r\nNot only are they taking great care of the animals that they have, I feel that they do a fabulous job at getting the word out, advertising, and promoting the animals they have. They are actively working to get people to see the available animals and get them homes as soon as they can.\r\nConsidering this is the last hope many of these animals have, I think the Arizona Humane Society does a superb job with the responsibilities they've taken on!

    Pros

doing all they can to find homes for these homeless animals

    Cons

their building is so old and really could use a makeover to help them with their continued charity

  • 23. I Love AZ Humane Society

    by: Hustedde

I have been so impressed with the AZ Humane Society and their proactive stance on key political issues facing Arizona today, including the ban on cockfighting and the ban on dogfighting. The recent location of an alleged dogfighting kingpin will result in the reduction of dog breeding and transportation of animals that are bred for the sole purpose of fighting will be diminished. \r\n\r\nI am grateful that the AZ Humane Society has a voice in Arizona with the legislature and elected officials. They are making a difference. \r\n\r\nNOW is the time to show our support by participating in this makeover so that more animals can be cared for and permanent homes are available for our pet friends.

    Pros

    Proactive in Pet Care

    Cons

    None that I know of

  • 24. the great job they do

    by: Jess369

The Az Humane Society does such a great job at caring for the animals. They are all spayed or neutered, shots are up to date, and they socialize with the pets as much as they can to help reduce kennel stress. Volunteers are a big help there as well!Donations are what keep them running! If you never been there the you need to visit!

    Pros

friendly, knowledgeable, interested in the pets needs!

    Cons

shortage of dogs at 13th and Hatcher

  • 25. YOU CAN FEEL GOOD ABOUT GETTING A NEW PET HERE!!

    by: lad

It is really disheartening to hear friends talk about getting a new pet from a breeder when right here in Phoenix, we have the Arizona Humane Society. You certainly have a range of animals to fall in love with and take home with you! And you are truly giving these animals a good home and a brighter future! What's not to love about that?\r\n\r\nThe volunteers and employees are friendly and knowlegeable. If someone doesn't know something, you can bet that he will go find out for you.\r\n\r\nThe shelter is as clean and accommodating as a shelter could be and you can tell that the people there give the animals plenty of love and affection. \r\n\r\n

    Pros

Volunteers and Employees are willing to help you, very friendly!

    Cons

It's a shelter.........that is con enough for the animals there!

  • 29. Great people, try fostering!

    by: eaglecrossing

We adopted a guinea pig from the AHS -- so many people didn;t know you could do that. The staff and volunteers were wonderful. So much so, that even though we live 45 min-1 hour away, we decided to become a foster family for dogs. We have our first one now. We encourage others to look into the foster experience.

    Pros

    Clean!!! kind people, foster program

    Cons

SUnnyslope needs a makeover! :) Need more foster families

  • 30. Very Nice!!!

    by: perumaster

This is the best pet shelter I have ever been to. The staff is veru knowledgable and so very clean. The animals are so happy there, you can just see their smiles, when you walk in to the shelter. I think this SHelter should get the prize, because they can use the money in a better more efficient way.

    Pros

Very well orginize, and their compassion overflows the environment.

    Cons

The only "cons" I can think of is the need of the prize money. THey really want to make a difference.

  • 31. AZ humane society

    by: ellent

I totally support the AZ Humane Society. They are extremely caring of all animals and place close to 100% of animals either turned in to them or rescued. They have to deal with overcrowding due to public negligence, but have found ways to place animals instead of euthanize them. I have gotten many of my animals through them and they have my respect and support.

    Pros

    Very caring of all animals

    Cons

Due to public negligence, deals with overcrowding

  • 33. Great Shelter to Foster for.

    by: catsareus

When I was looking for an organization to foster for, I chose the AZ Humane Society as I liked their setup and the work they do. Especially in getting as many animals as possible into foster care that aren't ready for adoption or who have stressed out from being in the shelter environment.

    Pros

    Great people to work with.

    Cons

Waiting time to pick up meds for ill fosters.

    by: pheathershaw

I strongly support the AZ Humane Society with frequent donations throughout the year. I have just taken in 2 stray cats who found their way to my home and into my heart. I will be calling the AHS to schedule spaying, neutering and vaccinations asap. I look forward to offering my volunteer services upon my retirement. Every opportunity I have had to visit the AHS, I have been very impressed with them and proud to be a contributor.

  • 36. This is the place!!

    by: beachmom6

I have been going to the AZ Humane Society for over 10 years beginning with their Sunnyslope facility and most recently, their Campus for Compassion. My latest addition to our already lovely family was two new cats - Princess and Boo. My husband, youngest son and I actually went to the Campus for Compassion facility looking for a rabbit. We spent at least 1/2 hour speaking with the friendly and very knowledgable rabbit lady and after speaking with her, we decided perhaps a rabbit would not be the best addition to our family. The rabbit lady was very honest and helpful and I think probably saved me from making a mistake (having a rabbit sounded to much like a toddler - I'm done with toddlers!!!). Seeing the look on my son's face, and of course seeing the cutest little kittens' faces, we drifted towards the kitten cages. Of course all kittens are cute, but we had the privilege of working with a wonderful woman volunteer who patiently worked with us to find the perfect kitten. While my hubby did the paperwork - I of course continued to look at the cats/kittens. As luck would have it, it was 1/2 off the second cat - and everyone knows cats love company - so I looked at the older cats; they need love too! I thought I found the perfect cat, but again the knowledgable staff and adoption personnel saved me from making the mistake of bringing a non-dog cat into my very dog house. I gave up the idea of getting another cat - it was getting late - and started towards the front door when this streak of white cat darting across the large playroom floor caught my eye. The cat ran right to the glass as if to say,"Take me with you!" I looked at that little white face and something in my said - that's the one... I looked at the cat's bio and her name was Princess.... It was a done deal! I got the lady and found my husband and said - "This is the cat! I know it!" My husband allows me my moments and without hesitation said " We'll take her too!" He asked if I was sure and I had to tell him the reason I was sure... My VERY FIRST kitten when I was in kindergarten was a white calico with a spot of black on her head - a spot that resembled a crown - can you guess my first white kitten's name (40 years ago)... you guessed it!!!! PRINCESS!!! AZ Humane Society Rocks and I wouldn't get a pet anywhere else!!!!

We live near the Arizona Humane Society Dobbins Rd. facility. We have brought our dogs to their clinic, and have always been impressed with their professional, and afforable services. \r\n\r\nThey offer a wealth of educational material, and their obediance classes are run by an efficient, knowlegible staff.

    Pros

    a very caring facility

    Cons

they are too busy to answer their clinic phones.

  • 38. Campus for Compassion, Dobbins Road, Phoenix

    by: anamayse

I volunteered here in cat adoptions because I had adopted a cat 2 years ago here and remembered what a clean, safe facility it was. I had previously adopted a cat at the county shelter and was dismayed at the conditions of the facilities and genuine lack of care of the animals.\n\nI look forward to each time I volunteer here and have met so many wonderful customers who come in to adopt an animal. I hear an abundance of compliments from them because of our beautiful, clean facility. The people know that the animals are genuinely well cared for.\n\n

    Pros

clean, sanitary, animals well cared for

    Cons

It gets real busy with folks wanting to adopt an pet they fell in love with!!!

    by: zigon

Arizona Humane Society has multiple campuses. We try to go just to do a tour every year at the main campus. The staff is very friendly and helpful in getting you to the different typesof animals. If you ever get an afternoon free and you just want to see the campus just check their website for hours.\r\n\r\nAnimal planet also has a show that follows the Phoenix recue people around. Its very touching show.\r\nhttp://animal.discovery.com/fansites/aplheroes/aplheroes.html\r\n\r\n

    Pros

    Very friendly staff

    Cons

Long drive from my own house

  • 41. Amazing organization

    by: RRebeccaR

This is truly an amazing organization. We adopted our first two pets from the AHS and were very impressed. A short while later, I had the opportunity to work there.\r\n\r\nI was a bit nervous, because I know that sometimes things turn out to be a bit different when you have the chance to experience an organization first-hand from the inside versus being an occassional consumer on the outside looking in. I didn't want to start working there and then come to find out that an organization I admired and respected really wasn't as great as I thought it was. \r\n\r\nHowever, that didn't happen. The people who work there (and many of the ones I worked with are still there) do what they do because they are absolutely dedicated to the cause and truly want to do everything they can to help the animals in our community who need it. I did eventually leave to accept an advancement at another company, but I left the AHS with even more respect and admiration for it than when I started working there.\r\n\r\nIt is not a no-kill shelter, but that is for a reason: Sadly, there are animals in need of euthanasia services in our community. Some are too ill or injured to be saved. Others have behavior problems that can't be overcome (largely brought on by cruelty, abuse or neglect by their previous owners). And some simply don't find a home even after months of waiting. I would much rather see an animal put down humanely than see it left to roam the streets and get hit by a car, or see it slowly go crazy living in a kennel for years on end. Yes, the AHS does put pets down, but they do it with an incredible amount of compassion and empathy, and ONLY when they believe it is in the animal's best interest to do so. The AHS doesn't fail those pets when they do that - the pet's breeder (professional, amateur or accidental breeder) and the pet's owner are the only ones to blame.

    Pros

Amazing, dedicated staff who do wonderful work on behalf of animals

    Cons

Locations, but given zoning restrictions it's a tough one to overcome

What a great day Feburary 9th was. We got Nala. She is just the sweetest dog and the people at the AZ Humane Society/ Sinnyslope Facility were just great. What a great group of people and the shelter was so clean and the animals even seemed happy to be there. We found Nala on the web site and went to the shelter looked her over and it took all of 1 hour and she was home with us. Thanks so much. We love her

    by: lexingtonchief

My family and I have adopted six kids from this facility and each experience was a pleasurable one that we would not hesitate to repeat. The area here is just overwhelmed with too many irresponsible pet "owners" and not enough good parents who make the animal a part of the family. Not property, but a member of the family! Education is a difficult thing when they do not understand or learn English. Thank you to this facility and staff for all that they do!!!

    Pros

    Caring and professional staff

    Cons

Overwhelmed with result of irresponsible pet owners in area

  • 44. "They are the Best In The West"

    by: maryr

The Arizona Humane Society is so caring.\r\nThey are always there for the animals, & they do such a wonderful job. They won the award last year for the "best" facility in all of the country. They deserved it for all the time & effort they put in to help sick, injured & homeless pets. They are the rock that our community needs. If you are looking to bring that "special" little friend into your life they can & will help you do so.

    Pros

They are always there for the animals.

    Cons

    Sunny Slope needs an update...badly.

I like going to this facility when looking for a new pet.....\r\n\r\nSome of my friends claim it's just too far to drive when looking for a pet!\r\n\r\nAll in all, I highly recommend this shelter - come and visit!

They are the greatest they are a non-kill animals shelter not only do they not kill them they rescue animals who are going to be put down in other places like animal control. I love AHS so very much I love that they also work with Heroes of Phoenix and do wonderful things!\r\n\r\nI adopted a cat in 2006 but it turned out my daughter was allergic...It was sad he was the perfect sweetest chill cat in the world! So I turned him in to the Humane Society because i trust them the most! I also donated all his food, beds, toys and cat scratchers to the AHS as well. They deserve it.\r\n\r\nI often Donate to their thrift shop. Its the least i can do. Also they re-sell them at a very resonable price. \r\n\r\nI recently adopted a puppy from the AHS in December of 07 He's been a joy! I'm so glad i did!\r\n\r\nKeep up the great work im rooting for you for the Make Over!

    by: babyfishmouth

Alot has already been written about AHS, so I will keep in short n' sweet. The staff and volunteers are the most dedicated and knowledgeable you will find. They have so many wonderful programs outside of being an animal shelter. Have you seen Animal Planet Heroes Phoenix on the Animal Planet channel? It shows the amazing work of their EAMT's (Emergency Animal Medical Technicians). AHS offers education and outreach programs, low cost spay/neuter, foster care and have a state-of-the art trauma center.

    Pros

Caring, dedicated staff and volunteers, MANY programs

    Cons

By law they must send strays to the County Animal Control

  • 58. Arizona's Help for our Animals

    by: kittymamasue

I am a volunteer at this shelter. I do mostly fostering, but do from time to time go into the shelter to help out. The workers love the animals. They get a lot of love while they are there. \r\nThere is a wonderful network of volunteers and docents. There is not enough room for all the unwanted pets that come through the doors. If I could, I would expand the area and allow many more pets to have homes. I would expand the medical facilities also to accomodate all the animals who need help.\r\nThey have and EAMT and rescue many animals who have been victims of cruelty. They are featured on Animal Planet.\r\nThey have a low cost spay and neuter program. There is a mobile unit as well.\r\nThey have a gift shop and a thrift shop which help to raise money for the shelter.\r\nThey participate in the Nationwide Adoptathon to get more animals placed in homes. \r\nThey put on a telethon each year to try and place animals in homes.\r\nEvery Saturday they have a local half hour show on TV to talkabout pets and the special ones who need home right away.\r\nThe shelter was there to help pets during Katrina and during our wildfires up north. Many animals were saved and placed in temporary foster homes until their parents could come and get them.\r\nThey do alot for the animals and I know they wish they could do more.\r\n\r\n

    Pros

Two campuses in 2 different parts of the valley.

    Cons

    Euthanasia(unfortunately)

    by: Ryanisabeast

Love the humane society foster program that my family is involved in. Gives me a chance to help out dogs. We are currently fostering a cattledog that has been lots of fun to take care of. She's been a great pal.

    Pros

    helps lots of animals

    Cons

    Doesn't have enough foster families

  • 61. AZ Humane Society has the right idea

    by: oconnelljen2

The AZ Humane Society has the philosophy of protecting animals and preventing their suffering. They strive to educate society in neutering and spaying your pets to prevent over population. The key to animal safety and well-being is to educate the people who take care of the animals. They have the right idea.\r\n\r\nTake the time to sign up as a foster family to help the Humane Society combat the problem of unwanted pets and their inhumane treatment. The program called S.A.F.E. (Saving Animals from Euthanasia) is a good program that needs more foster homes. Bring in some new ideas on how to advertise the S.A.F.E. animals to help them find the right home.

    Pros

Caring and knowledgeable staff helps animals to find the right home

    Cons

Needs better advertisements of animals in the S.A.F.E program (Saving Animals from Euthanasia)

  • 62. The Arizona Humane Society is a great shelter

I have been in some other shelters before and didn't feel as comfortable as I do at the A.Z. Humane Society. It's never the animals that made it uncomfortable in the other shelters it was was the surroundings. These people at the A.Z. shelter do an awesome job taking care of and getting the animals adopted out.

The facility is animal kind and so clean.\n\nI wish we did not need to have these facilities, but since we do both locations are clean and filled with caring people.

    by: Tareddy

Me and my family love the AHS. Our last two adoptions were from the Campus For Compassion. Thank goodness for that location. I find it so hard abd stressful and sad to go into shelters that I could not bring myself to actually go and adopt. Campus for Compassion has made it possible for me to adopt needy animals now. Both of our kitties we got there are amazing little girls and were very well cared for during their time there. By the way, the were both members of the lonely hearts club....heaven only knows why because they are AWESOME!

    Pros

Clearly love animals and want what is best

    Cons

Not enough space for all the needy animals

  • 76. A wonderful, Caring organization

    by: kjcarjo

The Arizona Humane Society is a wonderful, caring organization that rescues and helps unwanted, lost or abused pets in Phoenix Arizona. The staff strives to help and place as many pets as possible.\n\nWhen looking for a place to adopt a new member into your family I would recommend choosing a shelter as apposed to a pet store. The pets here are wonderful and need a good caring family.\n\nBy giving these pets a second chance they offer you the opportunity not only to enrich these animals lives but also your own.

    by: lcarr

I currently volunteer by fostering injured dogs and spend time helping out in the clinic. They can always use more foster families and I guess this is my personal plea to those who may be intersted, but have not "signed up yet." Do it! IT's so rewarding to bring a dog home for a few weeks to heal up and know that the few weeks of time I gave will help that animal live an entire lifetime!\r\n\r\nThat's my plea. Helping one animal at a time. :)

    Pros

    Long standing reputation

    by: ckgaz

Our dog Callie was from the Maricopa Animal and Control (county pound). We went to the AZ Humane Society of find her a friend. We had heard the facilities were nice and there were lots of places to do doggie intros unlike at the pound. We had a volunteer help us intro the two dogs and later the whole family was able to play and interact in a large dog run/park. It was a great experience and I highly recommend adopting from here.

    Pros

    Great facility

    Cons

    A bit of a drive

  • 85. Best Dog Ever...

    by: punkincash

We adopted Punkin here, at the Humane Society, and she is an awesome dog! Very loving, gets along with all of our other pets, and, she is also a great guard dog! She was taken into the shelter by someone who had found her. She had surgery immediately after being brought to the humane society, because she had eye trauma. The staff did surgery on her, and let us adopt her, after meeting our other dog, Cash. They love eachother, and she is a very happy, spoiled dog! She's a great pet, and people should visit the humane societies and shelters to find a new pet for themselves, instead of buying from breeders!

    Pros

    No cons come to mind

I am very familiar with AHS. The people there are true animal lovers and show it! The main campus is beautiful and clean. The Sunnyslope campus, unfortunately, is looking quite worn and truly needs more space. They are doing the best they can with whate they have to work with. Pros

    friendly, patient, caring, knowledgeable

    Cons

  • 90. They truly care!

    by: lolasmom

We adopted our most recent family addition from the Dobbins facility in Oct. 07. The kennels were spic and span with plenty of drinking water. The grounds were spotless. When you meet your possible new addition, they take you outside to a grassy fenced area large enough for dogs to run around and play in, where you can also have you current fur baby meet and greet the potential adoptee. There, they had kiddie pools for the dogs. These runs were also nicely kept. Even the visitors' restrooms were clean. The staff, who were readily available at all times, seemed acceptably knowledgeable, and it was obvious that every single person there LOVES what they do and truly cares for these animals.\r\nI adopted our other baby from the Sunnyslope facility in Apr. 04. Most of the workers there also seemed to really enjoy it, and several asked if I needed help finding an animal. The counselor I worked with obviously wanted to make sure my girl was getting the best home possible- I had been standing around for probably about two hours trying to decide, when he (whom I hadn't seen before) brought my girl to me (whom I also hadn't seen before)- she must have been out back or something. We met, I loved her immediately, he asked quite a few questions before he trusted that I was the right mom for her, and he was very patient with all the questions I had for him.\r\n

    Pros

They sincerly love animals and love what they do!

    Cons

    None!

  • 91. A Place Full of Compasion

    by: Molholt

I foster cats for the Humane Society and I think they are doing a great job. The over population problem in Arizona is out of control and the Humane Society is doing its best to help that. It saddens me when I got to pick up or drop off a foster and I see all of the people turing in animals for silly reasons. I really respect the people who work in the admissions portion of the shelter because if it were me I wouldn't be able to handle it. The foster staff is also wonderful and the adoptions people really care. I've adopted all of my cats from the Humane Society and I advocate to everyone I know to do the same.

    Pros

    They are doing good work

    Cons

A lot of people in AZ don't understand what it means to care for animals

  • 92. Great Job, AHS

    by: spatz

What a great organization to work for and to adopt from! Employees and volunteers at both facilities are ever so helpful and dedicated. Thank you especially to the wonderful volunteers who are so tirelessly laboring for the animals. Also a big thank you to the donors to the AHS. Without their financial support none of the services offered by the Humane Society would be possible. Often people wonder how we can offer such low-cost spay/neuter services to the community when vet care elsewhere can be so expensive. Without the generous support of our donors this would not be possible since the organization does not receive any sort of government funding. But, as always, more funds are needed to provide even better care for the growing number of pets coming through our doors. So if you haven't yet, please donate today! Thank you and God Bless.

    Pros

great service for both the animals and the community

    Cons

    by: canaldog

Although animal shelters are primarily known for adopting out animals, they can be so much more. The Arizona Humane Society has a fully staffed hospital and a low-cost spay/neuter clinic. They have programs such as Project SafeHouse (housing animals for individuals that are temporarily living in domestic violence shelters) and Project ActiveDuty (housing animals for individuals that are in the armed forces and living overseas). AHS is a very progressive organization.

I have been a patron of the AHS for over six years and I would never recommend any other place to find a furry (or not so furry) friend. The facilities are clean and extensive, offering anything from public dog runs to veterinary services, and of course animal adoptions. The staff and volunteers are of the highest of quality. They are helpful, insightful, and full of great advice, which is always given with a smile.\r\nThe AHS is celebrating 50 successful years of finding loving homes for animals, and I can only assume there to be many more of such memorable anniversaries to come.\r\n\r\n

This shelter is so warm and kind. They think of a lot of things from voluntary pet surrendering to adopting animals. The only problem they have is a serious lack of space. If they had the space they would be able to find more homes for these priceless gems.

    Pros

These people love these animals and they take care of them so well. We are lucky to have these people here for us in this state!

    Cons

They have to put down animals every so often because they lack the space to care for them. They hate putting these lovable animals down. They need more space!

Sunnyslope AHS has been helping pets and people for around 50 years! I grew up going there, and many of my pets have come from this shelter. I also work in this community and would love to see this shelter get the "makeover" it deserves!

    Pros

    Outstanding part of community

    Cons

  • 107. Best Staff and Services

    by: cstringari

I love the staff at AHS. They are so helpful. I found Buddy and Fuzzel at an adoption center and couldn't be happier with them. The adoption fees are always very low, usually under $100 and when you realize that it costs them $250 per cat to put up for adoption you will realize they aren't making any money on adoptions, only saving lives. They have saved over 3 million lives in the 50 years they have been in business. Thank you for helping the little ones that can't help themselves!!!

See my profile; my friends Honey, CoCo and Sammy came from AZ Humane. They do so much with the little they have (no government funding; donations only).\n\nI have bottlefed and handraised many a puppy and kitten for them; however now they are unable to help the littlest babies so they can focus on animals ready to be adopted. \n\nMaybe with a facelift and more room, they can help more animals and get the word out to spay/neuter and treat animals with the love and respect they deserve.

The staff took the time to talk to us about all the animals, and helped us find our perfect companion and addition to our family. We hope to return soon to adopt another one. They do a wonderful job!!

I foster for the humane society and personally see the wonderful things that they do. I have also turned in animals that I have found to be put up for adoption. I have adopted both of my dogs from them. Finally my cats were taken there for their vaccintions. I have used many of their services and have been very happy with what I she. I get many animals that have been medically treated and just need some time and go on to be adopted.

    Pros

    Non-Profit

    Cons

has limits on what they can do

We adopted our cat from AHS, they were great all the way. I also witnessed a dog get hit in the road late one Sunday afternoon. I called and they said they would come out as fast as they could. Knowing the dog might run again and get hurt worse I put him in my car and drove him to the shelter. The staff met me outside and even helped clean the mud from my car. WOW!

    Pros

    Caring staff and soo helpful

    Cons

    by: SJFoster1

This is an awesome group. They have a Saturday morning/early afternoon program on Channel 3 called Pets on Parade to help promote adoption of homeless animals. AHS also had their own program on Animal Planet that ran for several episodes detailing the wonderful rescue work that they do all over the Phoenix Valley. I have adopted one of my rabbits there and have visited on occasion just to visit the animals, talk to the staff and support the good work they do. Please support the Arizona Humane Society - those wonderful animals need your support if not your home.

    Pros

    Friendly and caring

    Cons

Both campuses are far from my home

Great place to find a lifelong friend or to volunteer. I've been a volunteer for 5 years and there are many departments that you can help with. From cats, dog, critters , thriftshop to fostering pets.

    Cons

  • 117. Great Shelter!

    by: catkook1

I got my first cats at this shelter and it was the greatest experience. The people were very nice and knowledgeable when helping me pick a pet. It is a great shelter that has been working to help the animals for a long time, but they need more room to accomodate all the new animals coming in each year. I really hope they win and I will do my best to help them reach that goal.

    Pros

Has great service and loving volunteers

    Cons

Is rather small and needs to expand to be able to give the animals a nicer temorary home

  • 120. Great place to volunteer

    by: squeaky3

AHS is a great place to volunteer. I have been doing so for about 6 months. Not only do you get to give love and attention to many furry friends - but you also get to learn in the process in a friendly, clean and welcoming environment. I have learned about dog breeds and behaviors as well as about how quickly pets can multiply without resposible spaying & neutering.

    Pros

Well staffed with employees and volunteers to help potential adopters find their new furry friends.

    Cons

Might be a little far for some people in the valley.

The AZ Humane Society has a long standing reputation for being the place to find your next forever pet. I have adopted two of my animals from them and have always had great experiences. Not onlu do they care about the animal in their care, they care about the family who is deciding to adopt. I have always felt their compassion through the volunteers at the centers.

    Pros

People who care about the animals and the families that visit

    Cons

Too many animals, not enough space

I got two of my best friends at the AHS, including my little Princess that I have now and thay have been a God send to me. The staff at the AHS are so helpfiul in trying to help you find the right pet. They are very active in all of the pet activities in the valley, and when disaster happens they are right there helping. The loaded up their mobile hospital and help with the animals from Hurricane Katrina, and take it up north to the reservations to help with their pets who need medical care. Hats off to the AHS!!!
