I didn't know there was an Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in Austin. The real one is along the coast northeast of Corpus Christi. It's a great place with lots of wildlife (birds mostly... including the Whooping Cranes). We were there a couple weeks ago. We saw deer and feral hogs too. And yes we saw a Whooping Crane... a juvenile. But we learned later that the fact that we saw this fellow alone meant that it was likely abandoned by it's parents and would likely not survive. We saw dogs there having fun running up the observation tower ramp.

    Pros

    lots to see

    Cons

    a long drive
