  • 1. I love this shelter

    by: stargirl26

I love this shelter one reason is because i have adopted my last two dogs from here. One was Gilly then after she past we adopted Preston and changed his name to Max.This shelter always takes good care of the animals. There is always some one to play with them and they have a great area for the dogs to play. Everyone who works there cares so much and never wants to see a dog unhappy so like when we went to go look for a dog for my grandmother they always tryed to pair the dog up with the best home possible. They would recomend dogs that they thought fit best in her area

    Pros

There is always someone there for the animals

    Cons

the animals still have to sleep on the cold ground

  • 2. great shelter

    by: amgfnyc

Animal Welfare is a wonderful organization. They are no-kill, and they are always trying to do more stuff at their shelter, such as offering obedience classes, expanding their space, etc. They advertise prominently in the local paper, and seem to work hard to place the animals in good homes. Wonderful shelter!

    Pros

    always aiming higher

    Cons

    none!

  • 3. A fine shelter

    by: marilynmehr

The AWS has very good facilities for dogs and also for cats considering how many cats are there. The staff and volunteers work hard with animals who might have a hard time being adopted. The staff is very professional in handling adoptions, making sure there is a good pet-person match.

    Pros

    Good facilities and professional staff

    Cons

    Limited adoption hours

I have recently signed up to be a cat socializer at this shelter. The first time I went in was a month ago. I was given a great tour and learned alot of information. I picked up a volunteer application, and brought it back this Monday, and I happily began my cat socializing.\r\nEveryone at the shelter was very friendly and knowledgable. You can tell that everyone works as a team, and take very good care of their animals.\r\n

    Pros

    Very friendly and welcoming staff.

    Cons

They would be well deserving and appreciative of this makeover.

    by: MissyLaw

When my male sheperd had to be put down from Cancer leaving his sister alone, she was so lonely she began to lose weight rapidly and cried constantly. Our vet told us to find a puppy, any puppy quickly. We contacted AWS and Renee said she had a litter of pups from down south. Comet caught my eye immediately and became part of our family. I will be forever thankful to Renee and her staff who were great.

    Pros

great staff. Cannot say anything but positive experiences

    Cons

    maybe limited hours open

  • 6. Great place to find a pet

    by: LPeart92

I have adopred a number of animals from this shelter, and have 2 13 year old cats at the time, both from AWS. It is a wonderful place to go to adopt, or just for a visit, to see the loving care all the animals receive.. With the help of many volunteers, the place is kept clean and neat at all times. The staff is extremely knowlegeable, both about animals in general and about each and every animal in their care. Every animal has a name, not a number, and are treated as part of a large family. I would never go anywhere else for a pet.

    Pros

    Non-destroy, loving, caring staff

    Cons

none, except they need more room

  • 7. Awesome

    by: TracyMiltner

I've been the happy adopted of two dogs from AWS. My first was Sage, a collie/golden mix at 8 or 10 years old. She was abandoned and very lonely. Turned out to have some separation anxiety issues which were challenging. However, she turned out to be an amazing therapy dog and became the ambassador of the shelter. Our second adoption was our Australian Shepherd, Merlin. He has turned out to be a huge goofball and the smartest dog I have ever met. This shelter evaluates the dogs to try to place them in the best possible homes. Some people get angry about this but the staff always works with the pet's best interest at heart.

    Pros

    Knowledgeable and helpful

    Cons

    Building needs a makeover!!!!! LOL

    by: echofreedom

The animal welfare society in new milford gave me true hope for all the animals in the world without homes. they love every animal, and it shows. they create a "home" for each animal there, where they feel loved and protected, yet always educating them and maintaining proper doggie/cat manners.\n\ni never feel sorry for the naimals there, i feel hopeful. i just wish i could be there every day all the time, being a part of the goodness and the happiness they give to the animals, and the naimals give to me and all.

    Pros

careful to find good matches for owner to pet

    Cons

i want to volunteer all the time, wish i could

  • 14. Great place, but one uncomfortable experience......

    by: AmyRenee89

We love this shelter. My son wanted another dog because 4 years prior our dog of 15 years passed and our son really missed having a dog. Before we got another dog we had him volunteer his time at the shelter first so we could gauge his commitment. He worked hard, regularly all summer one summer. And then we got our shih tzu whom we LOVE. But once when we were dropping off about $100 of laundry detergent and food donoations we were spoken too sternly about being in the back. Even when I tried to explain that we were volunteers and dropping of donations the person asked us to leave the back room and didn't want to hear from us. We were pretty insulted and we felt like we were more in the way then helpful so we didn't return to volunteer (or to donate). But we have been back to look at dogs, as we would like another. Most of the help there is wonderful- and we know the animals are well taken care of. So we will go back for our next dog. But we are done volunteering.

    Pros

    Clean and mostly friendly

    Cons

one poor experience, led us to stop volunteering

  • 15. Adopting from Animal Welfare in NM is a PLUS!

    by: MiaBurch

Eleven years ago, I adopted a cat named Annie. She is still called Annie but I elongated her name to Cheyanne (notice change in spelling to incorporate Annie). I had a lab named Herk who I felt needed a friend and on Valentine's Day 1997, my husband said go to NM Animal Welfare and pick out a cat. There were 2 kittens that were already taken and I was initially told there were no other kittens available but I could go look at the 2 that were already taken. There sat Annie in the cage below with a "HOLD" tag on her cage. When I asked why, they informed me she was the only living kitten of a brood that was left on their doorstep. She had a type of blood disorder that was contagious to other cats and that she was originally adopted by a young couple w/ a new baby who returned her after the kitten wanted to sleep in the crib. They informed me she was being tested for everything and that she probably wouldn't survive as all of her siblings had not. After contacting my vet and getting all the info on the disorder, I felt if she hadn't already met her demise, she probably wouldn't until she met an old age. As long as she would never be with another cat, I could adopt her. She is now a very happy and healthy 11 year old cat who is a major contributor to our family. I appreciate all that the NM Animal Welfare did to ensure she was alright at that time.

    Pros

    Utilized knowledge from local vet

    Cons

    none

  • 16. We love it there!

    by: graceyface

We love to take our dog Grace back to Animal Welfare. Yes, she loves to go back and see the friends she made during her stay there, and sometimes have a play date. In addition to Grace we have adopted 8 cats from the shelter. We love the people and animals so much that when we go to visit we usually come home with another cat, or two!

    Pros

    Outstanding People!

    Cons

    Too many homeless pets!

  • 17. Love New Milford Animal Welfare! Dodd Road: here we come!

    by: molbaygun

I can't say anything bad about this shelter. We adopted Molly in 1999 - success!! Toby in 2004 and Tiger in 2007. All of our animals were and still are healthy. The attention that they give to the animals as well as the people is above and beyond. Anytime I call, Renee or Lucy are more than willing to help and offer advice. (as is the entire staff!) I stop by with my kids just to say hi....they're like an extended family. We will go hang with the cats, chat with the dogs, and hold the rabbits. I teach school and my "club" makes crafts and raises money for the shelter. Any little bit helps. We have made stockings for the animals and had food drives for them. Great care and attention is given to the animals and they do screen to make sure the animals go to the best placement and forever home. \r\nThey get an A+ from me!!

    Pros

Friendly, caring, knowledgeable, always willing to help, fun

    Cons

    NONE!

  • 18. We adopted 2 dogs from here!!

    by: evi

In 1972 we adopted Dutch, a beautiful Belgian Shepard and she lifed to the ripe old age of 16. We then adopted again through this shelter and along came Daisy. She enjoyed our family until 2000. The following year we adopted 2 more pups tho not from this shelter. These folks were so good to us with our first 2 dogs. I would recommend them to any one.

    Pros

Gave us 2 beautiful dogs that enhanced our family.

    Cons

    none.

  • 19. Animal Welfare Society, New Milford

    by: ztT4MP36354612

I have owned many cats, from many shelters, over the years, and the New Milford Animal Welfare Society is superb. The shelter was recommended to me by many people. My cats were in excellent health, obviously very well taken care, and affectionate. The numerous times I was there I always saw volunteers playing with the animals and tending to their needs. In addition, the manager of the shelter went out of her way to see if the two cats I wanted to take home would get along with each other. They bonded at the shelter, and have been happy pals ever since. I strongly recommend this shelter to people looking for pets.

    Pros

    Wonderfully taken care of animals

    Cons

    none
