    Very smelly sometimes

  • 2. Found the best dog here

    by: jlove3

When I walked in there the first time, I cried. Just seeing all the homeless animals. It is so hard to just pick one. I wanted to take them all. We kept walking past Madison's pen. She was super quiet, not barking, no excitement at all. She was left there when she was 9 months old and had been there for 2 months. There was something special about her, her eyes staring at you were so heartfelt. We took her in a room to see her, and still nothing. But as soon as we got on her level, she was all over us. It was great. The staff did help us the best they could with our questions, but if the people who dropped her off lied on the cards, who knows what we could be in for. They told us she was housebroken. As soon as we got her home, she did use the bathroom in our home a few times. At times we didn't know if we picked the wrong dog. But with hard work everything worked out. We had gone to basic training with her and that helped a lot. We have now had her going on 2 years and I would never trade her for the world. We are still working on little flaws here and there, but that doesn't matter. We just found out she has over 18 allergies, so she is on special foods and may have to take allergy shots come spring. But she is worth it. It isn't her fault she has allergies and we will do whatever we can for her. With the shelter though, just recently we brought in a 40 plus pound bag of Canidae dry food and a large bag of treats from Dr Fosters and Smith for donation. We stood in line, and the lady at the counter asked if it was a donation, told her yes, she said "just put it over there". No thank you or anything. I was upset with that. I know it goes for a good cause, but do you think they could of been more appreciated by our gesture? I could of went to another shelter. It just bothers me.

    Pros

Accepts strays 24 hours a day 7 days a week

    Cons

Customer service could be more pleasant

  • 3. Five adoptions!

    by: tink2984

While the Animal Welfare league has been a familiar friendly place for my family and pets over the last several years it does need a makeover..the place has been the same for years! The staff is very friendly and loving to the animals you know when you go there the staff work there for all the right reasons but they need help! My family always adopts and recommends other to adopt and donate whatever they can to such a kind animal haven :-)

    Pros

Friendly staff, organized facility, affordable prices

    Cons

The facility needs upgrade and more seating!

  • 4. Their Great

    by: klusnr47

I have had a very good experiance with this shelter. They seem to really care about what they do.

    Pros

They really care about their animals

    Cons

    none

  • 5. Caring and helpful staff and volunteers

    by: peblypoo

The staff and volunteers at this shelter are helpful and do care for the animals. It is a difficult task with the small size of the shelter and the number of animals housed here. If you cannot adopt a pet drop off much needed food, newspapers, or litter to help out!

    Pros

They take in and care for many animals

    Cons

The shelter is too small for all the animals that it houses

  • 6. awl

    by: payton1

i volunteer there now, the people are so friendly and know so much about each individual animal. you can tell how much the staff really cares about finding the animals a home, and giving them as much love as possible while there.

    Pros

    everyone loves the animals

    Cons

    none

  • 7. Very Helpful and Caring

    by: amhamm17

Animal Welfare League was helpful in finding the right dog that would fit well with our family. With three kids, we wanted to make sure the dog was kid friendly. They did just that. We adopted Rex who is so playful and loves our kids as much as we do. I was glad to see that they asked many questions to make sure this is what we wanted. It was nice to know they make sure animals will go to someone who is in it for the long haul.

    Pros

Staff was helpful in picking out a family pet.

    Cons

There were way too many dogs to choose.

  • 8. Thanks For The Animal Welfare League

    by: djmike

In July 2008, my girlfriend and I adopted a cat from the A.W.L. We were extremely picky about what kind of cat we wanted to bring home, and the volunteers and staff were VERY patient with us. In February 2009, I brought a stray cat to the A.W.L. in the hopes that she would be able to find a good home. Again, the staff was patient with me, especially since I was having a hard time letting go of the little stray. I cannot thank the wonderful people at the A.W.L. for all of their help and time.

    Pros

Good location, friendly staff, great facility

    Cons

None that I can think of

  • 9. Love this place

    by: stanswife2008

This place is great. They really make sure their animals go to the right home. They are the only shelter in the Chicagoland area that gives Pit Bulls a home. Most shelters kill them. I have adopted all of my dogs from there and I wouldn't change that for the world. All three of my dogs are great. The shelter does need more donations, however, they try their best to take care of all of the animals there. I love this shelter.

    Pros

Very helpful, the staff here are always concerned about the animals, and they remeber you especially if you have adopted several times from there.

    Cons

    nothing

  • 10. Both our Dogs are from here!

    by: GeLe

Our black lab was from here, and he's been the perfect dog from day one! I actually had passed him by the first time at the shelter because he was barking a lot and backed up in the corner of his kennel, but I later saw on the website that they said once you took him out of the cage he really calmed down and was a different dog. He really is wonderful!! I give it a 5 for cleanliness because although they are filled absolutely to the brim, they keep up very well with the cleaning. I've seen smaller shelters that really don't. Also, the staff knows a lot about the animals and can help you pick out a good pet and lots of info available for new pet owners.

    Pros

Lots of pets to choose from!

    Cons

unfortunately, Lots of pets to choose from...

  • 11. Nice shelter

    by: BHOLTZ

This is one of the few places that offers low cost assistance to the needy that have pets. This is a wonderful service.

    Pros

good palce for low cost vaccinations

    Cons

someimes the staff can be rude

  • 12. Warehouse of Animals

    by: BettyWood

I guess they just take on more than they can reasonably handle. They also house animals at local vets nearby and I can say from very first hand experience that dogs held at these animal hospitals do not get very good care. It's deplorable.

    Pros

prices ok, lots to choose from

    Cons

many sick pets, lots of odors

  • 13. Our Favorite Doc

    by: Lizzie5

We came in just to look, but left with an adorable puppy. Lexi is now 6 years old. She is the most loving, smart and interesting dog. I wish everyone would adopt from shelters. You are doing something good for yourself, but you are making a world of difference for an animal. I would highly recommend the Animal Welfare League to anyone looking for a new pet.

    Pros

Nice selection of pets, fast adoption process

    Cons

    Facility could use on update

  • 14. AWL DESERVES MAKEOVER

    by: TNT7693

My family and I adopted Lady a wonderful dog from AWL 5 years ago. She is happy and healthy. We had been to several shelters that day and we chose to adopt from AWL because they took the time to answer my questions. The staff and volunteers were wonderful to talk to. When my family and I are ready to adopt again I will be heading back to AWL. They definitely deserve that makeover.

    Pros

Caring, friendly staff and volunteers. Many dogs and cats to choose from.

    Cons

    Overcrowded, understaffed

  • 15. Big but not big enough...

    by: bineplumpi

First walking in, I was not greatly impressed but then actually walking into the back part where all the animals where held was great. It was overwhelming, so many animals and impressive cleanliness for a shelter facility. Very nice and helpfull Employees and Volunteers. We ended up adopting Belladonna with very helpfull front counter associates helping us to fill out all the necessary paperwork. While going through the adoption process the front desk area started to fill up with a lot of people trying to adopt or find their lost pet. This facility definetly could use and deserves a make over. This facility and it's Employees could benefit from a better designed shelter and more animals could be helped that way, too. I would adopt from this shelter again.

    Pros

    Big facility--nice staff

    Cons

Needs more volunteers and waiting/reception area space

  • 16. Great place

    by: dj1914

This shelter is top notch. They take the time to talk to you about any concerns you have. Our German Sheppard mix had to have a cyst removed from between her paws and they were running behind schedule due to emergency that came in. They took the time to call us every couple of hours to give us an update. This was at a time when we had a beagle pass away on a month earlier. It was very comforting.

    Pros

    Customer Care

    Cons

    very busy.

  • 17. Great Shelter - Deserves a makeover

    by: shadow00

We adopted our dog from here after looking every week for a months. The staff was helpful and nice (held a dog while i got my kids from school). the vet and clinic staff were great too. Would adopt from here again. They deserve a makeover, cause the place needs to be updated.

    Pros

nice staff, good clinic, lots of dogs

    Cons

clinic wait, not too cheery atmosphere (decrotively)

  • 18. This place needs the Shelter Makeover!!

    by: ginkers4

I've been here a few times to look at various pets but I have yet to adopt from here. There is always quite a large selection of various breeds of animal up for adoption. It always seems to be very busy and crowded when I go.

    Pros

Convenient, large selection of adoptable pets

    Cons

    Crowded, busy, dingy

  • 19. Truly an Animal safe haven

    by: Terimc

I can't say enough about an animal shelter that doesn't turn away any animal. They are a safe haven to all animals, I saw a little billy goat there when I was looking for my kitty. They've saved so many unwanted disgarded pets and given second chances to strays I hope that they're able to make 2009 a banner year by securing the makeover they need.\r\n\r\nI searched all over for a shelter that would take a Stray kitten that was pregnant I found. PAWS and many other cat rescues simply told me that they didn't have room. I could have taken her to Chicago Ridge but I know that they're over crowded. I decided to have her spayed and deflead myself and with the help of a lot of good friends I found a great home for Fiona. \r\n\r\nAnyone in the area that can help them out with some hours of service or by dropping off some items on thier wish list can be sure that they're making a difference in some down on thier luck animal's lives.\r\n\r\n

    Pros

They accept all drop offs, health care provided, helpful and knowledgable staff and volunteers

    Cons

They need more space, better space utilization, financial aid and a MAKEOVER

  • 20. Only Shelter Open 24 hours/day 365 days/year.

    by: deb1964

I have been to many shelters but this is the only shelter in the State of Illinois that has staff 24 hours per day 365 days a year even holidays. They give immediate medical care, food and housing, to all strays, give-ups, and discarded animals and the staff is very compassionate and dedicated. I donate to them and they never sold my name to other solicitors as so many others do. I always go here first when I adopt. I would never buy an animal from a pet store or breeder. There are too many homeless waiting for a home. This shelter needs a makeover due to the crowding.

    Pros

This is the model shelter all shelters should strive to be like

    Cons

Always busy. I always have to wait but worth the wait!

  • 21. Got PeeWee from here

    by: ohmygod

Adopting our cat from there has been a very rewarding experience. She is the best cat we could have hoped for. The vets and assistants are the best. They are very caring and understanding.

    Pros

    very friendly

    Cons

sometimes the wait is long to see the vet

  • 22. The best shelter

    by: Ravenheart

We adopted Otis from this shelter and we had a wonderful experience. I take anyone who is interested in adopting to this shelter before we go any where else.

    Pros

    Caring people

    Cons

    Front desk help

  • 23. great place!

    by: matthewmartino5

Me and my girlfriend love it here. Not enough room however. This place does not have enough room for the demand of animals. Everyone here is so generous too. I have no complaints for this shelter. We have adopted a cat from here and we love him very much. My girlfriend has also volunteered here and said that all the animals get the car they need and recieve love from the faculty and volunteers.

    Pros

    Knowledgeable

    Cons

    Not enough spave

  • 24. AWL Chicago Ridge

    by: kettawa

I have adopted 2 cats from this shelter. The first cat, we named Leela but she passed away. A few days after that happened we went and found a new kitty, Cammy has been a wonderful cat. The AWL made sure she got spayed, she was only 4 months old when we got and they had us come back when she was old enough to get "fixed". The only problem with this shelter is that is in need of help, the facility itself is showing it's age and could use a remodel. The staff is wonderful, friendly and knowledgeable. If I ever want a new furry family member I'd return to the AWL and adopt from them again.

    Pros

    Wonderful people and adoptable animals

    Cons

    needs some modern updates

  • 25. Haven for all animals

    by: cowgirlcorina

Animal Welfare League gives a person the idea that even though all these animals come form different back grounds they are brought together so they are able to have one last chance to a loving home. The shelter tries to provide for their animals in any way possible even if it takes an employee to come in on their day off.

    Pros

The shelter has many different types of animals.

    Cons

They do not have enough sponsors to give the animals what they need.

  • 26. Desperately in need

    by: dnatonson

I was a volunteer at this shelter in the early 90s, and according to these reviews, very little has changed. They are in desperate need of organization and assistance. What began as a one night a week volunteer position became two nights and one full weekend day, because staffing was low and sporadic.\r\n\r\nI look back with great memories of that time, and the strong belief that management was working to prevent injury and, ultimately, death to any animal. Unfortunately, they did/do not have the staff or funding to do this in a manner that also showcases their public service. Contrary to other reviewers beliefs, most dogs were walked each day, regardless of weather. I know, I did it. As it is a facility that accepts any animal in any condition at any time, the number of animals is staggering and the method in which animals arrive is varied. I recall one instance in which a car literally threw a dog out a window as they drove by. All of these animals were given shelter, that is after all, what the welfare league is there to do. Yes, they seek to provide the best care and comfort to all animals, but to expect all animals to remain healthy while in their care is unrealistic. Episodes of either kennel cough, or parvovirus sweep through a shelter as quickly as a cough or flu does through a kindergarten classroom.\r\n\r\nI applaud the AWL for their conviction and hard work, but I would like to see organizational changes as I knew there to be waste and mis-management at the time which appears to be the case now. I also challenge any one else writing a review or considering adoption to put their time or money where their mouth is. Contribute to this, or any other animal shelter, with money or your time. Another reviewer wrote of the stench, and it was awful, but you get over it. But you never, ever get over the feeling of placing an animal in need with a family. Some say they could not possibly volunteer, it would break their heart. Yes, it does, on a daily basis. But it also fills you with a sense of pride and purpose that we rarely feel otherwise.\r\n\r\nHumans are (at least partly) responsible for domesticating these animals. Humans are also responsible for ensuring their care. As the Nike ad of the 90s encouraged, "JUST DO IT!"

    Pros

Ability and decision to accept any animal at any time.

    Cons

    Same as the pro.

    by: emoJENGA13

Animal Welfare League really deserves this! they let us (the volunteers) take care of the animals. i am a volunteer who isnt allowed to have pets in my apartment, i love that once a week i can go there and walk dogs, play with them, play with cats, and also clean up after them as i would if they were at my house. I love being able to care for animals as if they were my own! Animal Welfare League really deserves this makeover they have helped so many animals and helped familys find new pets to love. I love seeing a dog being adopted because i know some ones family is going to be so happy at home! Please pick them for this Makeover!\r\n\r\n-Jen!

    Pros

They take in many animals and let us (the volunteers) take care of them!

    Cons

    they need more space!

  • 29. My AWL Experience

    by: CoNceptZ

I adopted a dog from Animal Welfare League and I am so glad I was able to bring the little angel home and give her a new start at life. She had looked so sad when I first saw her in her cage and now she's full of life all the time. The conditions in the AWL aren't ideal but they are doing the best they can considering they are a non-profit organization and that most of the things they have come from donations. I am a very big animal lover and I hate to see any animal in a bad situation but alot of these dogs are coming from even worse situations. I admire the work these people are doing and I understand that they are trying there best, they need our help to do that though. People need to help by bringing in food donations for the animals, giving what money they can spare and maybe even trying to volunteer yourself if you are unhappy with the way things are being done. I couldn't be happier with my adopted dog. The people at Animal Welfare found her as a stray and rescued her. I'm glad they did because I found her and get to give her the life she deserves. So thank you AWL and I hope you get the help you guys need.

    Pros

Very Friendly Animals. Helpful and friendly workers.

    Cons

The conditions of the facility and the way animals have to be kept.

  • 30. I love animal welfare of Chicago Ridge!

    by: davidjhoffman

I have two dogs and one cat from Chicago Ridge animal welfare. (One cat born here at home also.)\r\nWe bring them there for certain maintenance and I have called them on several occasions with health questions in which they answered correctly, efficiently and most of all with love and care!\r\nMy parents recently purchased a dog from a neighbor and had her fixed there. I am happy to say she is doing well! I really hope that the Chicago Ridge animal welfare gets the much needed updates that the prize would offer. God bless the caring staff and team of doctors!!\r\nSincerely, Dave Hoffman and family

    Pros

Great staff, knowledgeable and very caring!!

    Cons

need more space and updated kennel facilities

  • 31. I adopted my Chopper here

    by: mariposabowling

What can I say except they allowed me to be a parent. My first baby boy Chopper a american bulldog came from them. His intelligence and sensitivity is amazing. Knowing what the AWL rescued him from is horrifying. He was approx. 2 weeks old and left in in an unheated garage in feb in one of the coldest blitzes we have had. He was so sick they were nervous about us having him as they did not know how he was going to do, after a day we got the go ahead and their vets there went to bat for him. He was so lethargic and congested, But over the period of 2 weeks he was a total turnaround. They have always been a phenomenal agency and I have always been so proud of them. To do what they do and with a smile is so noble!!!

    Pros

They are wonderful and God bless them for all they do!

    Cons

They need more help and donations and foster parents!

  • 32. Welfare doesn't deserve to be in their name

    by: SweetNiko

First let me say that my family pet was adopted from this shelter back in the early 90s. We still have him & he's doing well. He came home from AWL with ring worm and then contracted ear mites after going there to get neutered. I am grateful to AWL for providing me with years with my beloved pet.\n\nI visited the shelter looking for a new cat. I was shocked that you could smell the stench before you even reached the lobby area. The place is very crowded and under staffed. We had to wait 15 min just to have someone greet us at the info desk. \n\nWe walked into the area where the animals were kept and was shocked. There are dogs in cages in the hallway. Dogs and cats are kept in the same rooms and the dogs are constantly barking. How can the cats sleep?! The dog cages were dirty and many dogs were standing in their own feces. There were no blankets, toys, or anything like that. Simply a stainless steel feeding bowl.\n\nThe staff consisted of mostly teenage girls who were there to do mandatory volunteer work. In IL you must have community service credit now to graduate. These girls mostly just stood around and only came over if they were called by a potential pet parent. The girl that helped me was actually afraid of the cat!! How can you volunteer at a shelter if you're afraid of the animals? That makes no sense and isn't fair to the animals. The older volunteers did seem very caring and knowledgeable. The staff was very overwhelmed and didn't even know the cats name that I wanted to adopt. They kept mixing him up with another cat and eventually put 2 names on his "card".\n\nMany of the animals appeared to be sick and a AWL staff member confirmed that many of them had contracted an upper respiratory infection from each other. I was told that the policy of AWL was not to treat the animals until they were up positive the animal would be adopted. I was interested in a certain cat and he had a "cloudy" eye. We noticed many cats there with the same condition. A AWL staff member said the the condition was caused by the upper respiratory infection they all shared. She said it'd go away with treatment. (Why the heck weren't they being treated then?!) Another staff member later said this cat we wanted was probably "blind" in the cloudy eye and there'd be nothing we could do for him. He had gone blind, according to staff, due to non-treatment of the illness. I can understand that treatment costs money but how can you allow an animal to suffer? That is just plain cruel and defeats the purpose of them even being a "shelter". Aren't shelters there to protect the animals?!\n\nThey would allow me to talk to vet stating that unless I adopted the cat I'd be wasting the vets time. He only had time for "paying" customers!! \n\nWe were willing to adopt the cat with the cloudy eye but decided against it when we couldn't talk to the vet. I planned to adopt 2 cats and couldn't risk the health of the other cat.\n\nI ended up at PAWS in Tinley Park, IL and had a wonderful experience. PAWS and AWL are like night and day. PAWS was clean and only had the faint smell of bleach. There were no animals lining the halls and all the animals had toys, blankets, and blankets. The cats even had matching cat bedding. The entire staff was knowledge and very caring. All the animals had names and every staff member knew them by that name.\n\nI adopted 2 cats from them and couldn't be happier. The cats are healthy and I know by my adopting from PAWS two more cats will get the chance to be adopted from their wonderful shelter.\nPAWS in Tinley Park isn't listed on his site but it should be. I've been to PAWS Chicago as well and while it's a nice shelter it doesn't compare to PAWS Tinley Park.\n\nI am happy that AWL takes in so many animals and realize that they are doing the best they can but honestly their "best" simply isn't good enough. I think they need new management and to possibly consider not taking in so many animals. Being able to say you're the "largest" animal shelter in IL means nothing if you're also the worst.

    Pros

The fact that they take in so many animals

    Cons

Animals are sick & seemingly not well cared for

  • 33. Hard work

    by: AmyMisner

I love going to this shelter and i have volunteered here a couple of times and really enjoyed my experience. Everyone helping out was very happy and helpful with any questions that I had. The place needs more room for the demand of animals coming in to the shelter. i believe they deserve this makeover for all the hard work.

    Pros

    The staff is very dedicated

    Cons

    It is very crowded.

  • 34. Animal Welfare League, Chicago Ridge,Illinos

    by: mrscoach

When our family was looking for a shepherd, the organization did not have any at the time. We have always had shepherds and wanted to stay with the breed. Whenever I called, the person at the Animal Welfare League was always polite and so helpful. I highly recommend getting a dog from here instead of elsewhere. These folks truly want what is best for their furry, scaly, and feathered friends.

    Pros

    Patient and knowledgeable staff.

    Cons

    None

  • 35. Caring People

    by: mrsz

We adopted both of our dogs and our guinea pig from the Animal welfare league in Chicago Ridge, IL. The staff has always been very helpful and kind. \r\n\r\nThey really do need a make over because of the number of animals they take in. They need more space and some modern updates to help make it a nicer place for the animals who are awaiting homes. It is sad to see so many unwanted animals, a better facility would at least make it a happier place for them to stay. The staff tries to keep it as clean as possible, but the smell in the big kennel room can be strong because of the older ventilation system. \r\n\r\nThey have a small clinic area which could also use additional space and updated equipment.\r\n\r\nPlease help them to keep up their great work with a better facility!

    Pros

    Helpful, knowledgeable staff

    Cons

So many animals to care for in older facility

  • 36. Adoption

    by: djkelly

We adopted our dog 11 years ago. The first six months we had him the welfare league was very helpful. I have called and inquired regarding specialists, dog kennels to use for vacations, etc. and every facility they have recommended has been excellent. God forget something ever happens to our baby Gator, we will go back and adopt another pet from them.

    Pros

    great with assistance

    Cons

need more room/staff for additional animals

  • 37. Open Up Your Heart

    A Great Selection

    Cons

    Hard to choose just one!

    by: cindy44

I first encountered the shelter when I was searching for a cat. The staff was so friendly and willing to take time to help us find the right one. We were very pleased with our cat. the next time was when we used their clinic. We had our two new pups get shots and the male was spayed/neutered. It was a fine experience.\r\nMy children volunteered there with a long time volunteer and they learned so much and gave love to the animals and received it back 10 fold.

    Pros

close to home. Accepts so many animals

    Cons

Needs more space, clinic is way too busy, need space and help

I adopted a one-year old domestic short-haired calico cat on June 6, 2008. Her name while at the shelter was "Kitty"; I renamed her Jasmine. A couple of days after adopting her she developed an upper-respiratory infection and I brought her back. The staff was very loving and professional. Jasmine was treated immediately and is doing great today! She has an older brother, Norman, and they are great friends! We are so happy to have her as a part of our family!!! I strongly encouraged anyone that is looking for a pet to PLEASE adopt from The Animal Welfare League of Chicago Ridge, IL 60415. There are so many wonderful pets that desperately need a loving home!\r\n\r\nSincerely,\r\nLori Bullio

    Pros

    Very helpful, knowledgeable, loving staff

    Cons

Needs more room for all of the animals

  • 42. A Wonderful Place!

    by: PaintChick

At AWL the staff truly cares about all the animals that enter through the doors. Whether it is an old dog on its last leg of a journey or a young puppy just starting its journey the AWL cares. They will go out of their way in order to help out an animal. Trruly a wonderful place that is fully deserving of a makeover!!

    Pros

The staff truly cares about the animals

    Cons

    Needs a makeover

  • 43. They need this the most!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    by: PatStryszak

I have been with animal welfare league for over 10 years and what they have done for my animals that regular vets have tried to over rate is a huge difference. I am a rescue now because of seeing what they have been dealing with and now I'm trying to help make a difference. they have opened my eyes to what they have to deal with everyday and more people need to see. They do an awesome job!!!!!!!!!!! They deal with what they have but they need a make over the most!!!! Please help them. You won't regret it at all.

    Pros

They save a lot of lives

    Cons

    Not many

    by: bluecutie27

I adopted my dog from the Animal Welfare League about 3 years ago and it was the best decision of my life. When i walked into the AWL i knew that i would find my dog there. Although the conditions weren't up to standard, so to speak, the staff was very helpful and knew what they were doing.\r\nNot only did i adopt from the AWL, but i also worked there. The employees try to make the animals as comfortable as possible, but the supplies is very limited. Yes they receive many donations, but it's more newspapers and no toys or bedding. \r\nThe AWL does take care of these animals. No matter what kind and the owner deserves a break. She takes every animal in no matter what condition they might be in. The AWL deserves this makeover because they truly care about these animals more than there own safety sometimes.

    Pros

the staff knows everything about each animal and the volunteers really take to each animal and try their best to get to know them.

    Cons

Taking care of the animals is this shelters first concern so they do not have time or money to make renevations on their own.

  • 45. best shelter ever!

    by: koukla

The AWL shelter takes on so many animals because of the love and compassion the staff and volunteers have for animals. The space is limited and they are in desperate need of more space and supplies. About 14 years ago, my family adopted a beagle named Bud from this shelter. He was the best dog and most loyal. He passed away a couple of years ago but I will never forget the compassion of the vet clinic who took always took care of Bud. I hope they get the makeover, they so desperately need and deserve.

    Pros

wonderful shelter with caring volunteers and staff

    Cons

    limited space

  • 46. Love comes in mysterious packages...

    by: LauraJ306

I adopted two of my four pups from the Animal Welfare League. I was looking for a German Shepherd when I got Magnum. He was about 8 weeks old when I got him. He was labeled a Shepherd Mix - close but not really! I love him anyway! He has gone through obedience training and is very excited about agility! I have found great joy in this little mixed breed and wouldn't trade him for any other in the world!\r\nMajesty was brought home when my daughter decided she wanted a pup of her own. He is labeled a poodle mix but I don't see any evidence of a "mix." He is very "majestic" and very serious yet silly! I am his "Granny Ma" and he is "Granny Ma's Boy." He is hilarious as he is the smallest of the four dogs in the house yet he holds his own and can be a little bully when he gets in the mood. \r\nI applaud Animal Welfare League for their commitment and when I retire, I will be their biggest volunteer! Although I may try to take every dog home...

    Pros

    Friendly and knowledgable staff

    Cons

Wait can be long for vet care

  • 47. Friendly People

    by: marzena2525

This is an excellent place to make an adoption. The volunteers here know animals personally and answer any unknown questions. Very helpful and truthful.

    Pros

Friendly, nice, smart volunteers and staff.

    Cons

    Not enough volunteers.

  • 48. there is love. now in need of a makeover.

    by: animallover420

I have been a volunteer at this shelter for 1 year and 2 months now. Everytime I walk in im always greeted by the staff and of course all of the adoptees. I've witnessed them in good times and in bad. They try their hardest to give the animals the best chance for adoption that they can but are in need of a little bit more space and a facility that can encourage more people into coming into the shelter, such as more venalation systems and more cleaning supplies. They have the people willing to take the time to do whatever possible for the animals but are lacking the necessities to accomplish more.

    Pros

Lovable staff. very dedicated for a good cause.

    Cons

needs more usable space with a better facility to encourage more adoptions.

  • 49. They really NEED A MAKEOVER

    by: Paulyna

The animal welfare league really needs a makeover! i went there today and i got very emotional. the place is trashed and everything is so unclean. my school donated 2,000 to them and i saw no change in their survace. i visit that place not very often. It smells vey badly and it was over crowded with animals. I felt so bad for all of the animals suffering there. If we do win the makeover then the people will be happy to actually go there and adopt some pets. So i want everyone to try as best as they can to help the Animal Welfare Leage. \r\n\r\n\r\nThank You\r\n

    Pros

    We need help

    Cons

    Help for the best

  • 50. Great staff! Even at late hours!

    by: BasiaJune

Me and my friend were actually driving to my house when we seen a car just hit this cat and still drive off. I was driving her car and I made a huge U-Turn in the middle of Pulaski. It was like 1am so there was no traffic. We took the cat there and were hoping to save it's life. They tried but 10 minutes later he had passed away. My husband still makes fun of us because we tried saving the cats life. We wrapped it in a blanket she had in her trunk. And it was just staring at me. I knew I couldn't just leave it laying there to be hit more times. RIP! But the staff there was very nice, and they tried to save the cats life! The cat had to much damage!

    Pros

    Very Nice

    Cons

    Nothing

    by: ecosmom

My husband and I just moved into our first house and I was so excited to finally be able to adopt a dog! Our first stop was the Animal Welfare League. I've been to many shelters and have even worked in one. I've never cried walking through a facility but I cried like a baby walking through this place. The room the dogs are kept in was literally the most depressing place I have EVER been.\r\n\r\nThe dogs have nothing but cement and a stainless steel bowl for water. No bedding, no chew toys . . . just nothing. All they hear is the constant barking of their hopeful neighbors. \r\n\r\nI fell in love with one Pit Bull Terrier and asked to visit with her. The staff took us into a tiny cement room with just a thin little rope around this poor dogs neck. Of course all the dog did was choke itself on this rope. The dogs nails were so long I couldn't believe it. I wondered if it had even seen a vet while it was there. You could tell the dog NEVER got out for walks due to it's behavior in the room. It was out of control and not for attention from humans but for a little fake leaf it found on the floor.\r\n\r\nI'm not trying to say this facility doesn't care but maybe it's trying to do too much. In taking on too much perhaps the care is lacking in certain areas. A makeover could certainly help get this place on the right track.\r\n\r\nNeedless to say my husband and I drove to a shelter in Huntley, IL. It was a 2 hour journey for us and was very well worth it. We now have a seven month old Amstaff.

    Pros

    Helps a ton of animals

    Cons

    perhaps too many animals

  • 52. AWESOME!!

    by: fitzboss

We just adopted a minpin who was 10 years old. We love our Princess!! She is a very well behaved dog. We understand that she was emaciated. Our 6 year old is in love with her. I know that it is overwhelming and smelly at AWL but we have to help them more and pass the word on spaying and neutering so they don't have to deal with so many animals. I not only paid the adoption fee but gave an additional donation. Every little bit helps!!

    Pros

    CARING PEOPLE

    Cons

    TOO MANY ANIMALS

  • 55. Animal Welfare League is my favorite

    by: Ulia86

I first visited the place about 8 years ago, i was 13y.o.\nI couldn't believe how many unwanted animals are out there. I was really sad to be in the rooms with all the cats, they would all stick their paws out, it was like they were saying "Pick me, pick me!"\n\nYes its true, they do need more space, but if you look at the reality, were are they ever going to get that kind of money? Their adoption costs and vet services are so cheap, they hardly have enough money to run the place. Im glad that the staff at the welfare league takes more priority in the animals, and not what the place looks like.\n\nI know that they do their Best!!! My parents had got 8 cats there over the past 8 years, some of them were sick when we got them, so they didn't make it for very long, but we were still happy to give them a warm home even if it wasn't for long. \n\n\n

    Pros

Everyone that works at the Welfare League, take huge pride and joy at what they are doing.

    Cons

The Facility is really small considering the amounts of animals in it

  • 56. Animal Welfare League Chicago Ridge

    by: mapaluch

We visit the Animal Welfare League because we are considering adopting a pet. The members of the staff are nice and they do their best to take care of the animals. The facility deserves a makeover due to their hard work and care for the animals.

    Pros

The staff is nice and they try really hard to take care of the animals

    Cons

It would be nice if they could win a makeover to update the facility.

  • 57. My dog Kane

    by: maddenzmom1014

My husband suprised me 2 weeks before Christmas last year with Kane. He adopted him from the Animal Welfare league. He was terribly skinny from the situation he was left in before being surrendered to the Animal Welfare and he had Kennel cough. When we brought him home he was given antibiotics and after 2 weeks they gave me more because he was still sick. I have to say it smells a bit horrid when I go there but for the most part it's well kept up. I go there on occasion just to walk through and say "Hi" to all the Homeless animals. My daughter & I went there Christmas morning of 2005 and fed all the animals. I can't think of a more deserving place to win the Makeover.

    Pros

    Very close to my home

    Cons

I don't get there enough to see the animals

  • 58. The only and largest shelter which accepts strays 24 hours 7 day a week

    by: Mike1957

This is the only shelter in Illinois and the Chicagoland area which accepts strays 24 hours, 7 day a week and renders food and medical care. It is open 7 days a week and adopts out thousands per year. They accept no government funding and do this through the kindness of donors. They also give away dog and cat food to low income animal owners. The clinic is open 7 days a week with a fast track for immunizations with xray and lab services with surgery and of course spay/neuter. This organization works with rescue groups and other shelters to reduce the pet overpopulation. They investigate inhumane complaints and work with dozens of police departments. The President Linda Estrada even helped apprehend a pitbull breeding delivery service which was nationwide. They have countless photos of before and after photos of animals they rescued. If you have some extra time and want to get back more than you'll give volunteer at this shelter!

    Pros

The largest shelter, renders medical care to strays, feeds and innoculates strays, adopts 7 days a week

    Cons

Very Busy must have some patience

  • 59. Sooo many animals!

    by: ibelieve783

It's a great shelter, but the smell can be unbearable. There are so many pets and not enough staffed employees able to help. And the dog runs are not the best. A makeover is necessary!

    Pros

They use every available space they have.

    Cons

Very difficult to adopt a pet.

  • 60. Animal Welfare League Chicago Ridge, IL

I think that the Animal Welfare League is a really great place. They house many Animals there and do everything they can too help them live a comfortable lifestyle. The kennels and cages there are almost always clean. Like most shelters they are always in need of donations.

    Pros

Large Facility, A lot of Voulenteers to Assist you, Does a great Job

    Cons

    Sometimes customer serviceis slow

  • 61. Not what I would recommend

    by: sandipetee

I had heard a lot about this shelter, so decided to go check it out for myself. The outside of the building looked really cool. The inside was a mess. At least one third of the cages were dirty. There seemed to be way too many animals. I did talk to the clinic staff, who were very nice and helpful. The clinic was clean. They do offer a lot of services. I did call them three different times with questions, and got three different answers from three different people. This could be a phenomenal shelter with the right people running it.

    Pros

Offer a lot of services to the community

    Cons

Shelter was extremely dirty and overcrowded

    by: johnandhisdane

I adopted my dog from here in october of 2006 and even though I would not trade her for the world they were not honest about her issues when I adopted her. She has seperation anxiety like no other that I have heard of I am sure others have this issue and I have learned to live around it but if I had a better idea when I got her what I was in for I would have been better prepared.

  • 64. Willing to give ferral kitten a chance

    by: beansmommy

Last year a litter of kittens were trying to live in my father-in-laws truck, under the hood. We were able to only trap one of them before the mother cat moved them to another location. This was one little wild ball of fur. We had to wear welding gloves. I didn't know what to do. The people at Animal welfare league said they had people that worked with the cats to socialize them and said it would be given a chance so they could find it a home. They were so nice. I left a small donation and I was sad for the kitty, but it was better off. I just kept thinking what the truck could have done to them if he didn't put a stop to them living under the hood.

    Pros

  • 65. GREAT PLACE TO GET A PET

    by: HRisser

I got my german shepard from here and he has turned out to be a great dog. We tried to adopt a kitten but because there is a 4 year old in the house we could not get it. We did adopt from somewhere else but we did fall in love with the one that was there the kitten is almost two and is doing great. I think in some cases kids are like dogs and they should tested and not just judged on age or breed.

    Pros

Easy to get to, a lot of animals to choose from

    Cons

    crazy rules about kids

  • 66. Great shelter!

    by: carolnmaddie

I donate a lot of items to this shelter because I believe they deserve it. They take in strays all hours and take good care of the animals they have. They make sure they adopt the right animal to the right family. The only problem I have are the a couple staff members that were not too friendly but I am sure it was a bad day because they always seem VERY busy. Keep up the great work!

    Pros

    Very clean and knowledgeable!

    Cons

Some of the staff can be a little crabby.

  • 67. Great staff and great place for adoption!

  • 68. Hard Working Caring Facility

    by: foxflower

I adopted my a male rabbit recently from this facility. The person in charge of the rabbits was very knowledgable and caring but had so many rabbits turned in of late was seeking other shelters to assist in taking the overflow as they did not have room for them all. \n\nDespite the crowding however, they have great volunteers that give the animals attention, clean their cages constantly, and they provide appropriate vet care and diet. \n\nThere is a veterinary clinic on site and they provide for reduced cost spaying and neutering of animals that are not adopted. Spaying and neutering of adopted animals is included in the adoption fee. I could not believe that I paid only 27.50 for my male rabbit that included the cost of the neutering. Neutering rabbits is more expensive than dogs or cats as it is more a more complicated procedure.\n\nThis shelter had hard working dedicated personnel and volunteers and deserves everyone's support.

    Pros

    Concerned, Hard Working, Knowledgable

    Cons

    Overcrowded

  • 73. Shelter Review

    by: animalkid

\r\n I think the Animal Welfare League really needs a make over!!!!! There are about a hundred dogs there, and also many cats, a few birds, and some rodents. The people there are nice and they do all they can for the animals, but there are few or no volunteers there, and as you might guess it is very hard for them to meet all the needs of every individual with all the work they have to do. The shelter needs more space and better kennels for the dogs and a good cat room for the cats.\r\n

    Pros

The Animal Welfare League is a no-kill shelter trying to find homes for the many animals that reside there

    Cons

It is very over crowded and dirty

  • 74. Animal Shelter

    by: jrogalny

We adopted Murray from the AWL. I couldn't have asked for a better dog. Our pound puppy ended up being our ring bearer in our wedding (as you can tell from my profile photo). I had a hard time choosing a dog because how can one choose? There were so many and it literally broke my heart. My hubby then pointed out Murray. I went to pet him and he gave me his paw and I was sold. He is an excellent dog and truly a member of our family. The adoption process was fairly strict (which I don't mind). This shelter wants to know that these animals are being adopted into good homes. We will always rescue animals and not go to a breeder. The AWL is our choice and we are forever grateful to them for finding us Murray!!

    Pros

    Adoption Criteria is Strict

    Cons

Just seeing all the homeless animals :(
