  • 1. Fair Prices no Frills

    by: nanachalfont

Thank goodness that places like this can still operate. It isn't easy in these times to maintain pets, make sure they're spayed and neutered and vaccinated. Many people in nearby cities, like Philly have had to turn animals back to shelters, the costs have become more than bearable- but these folks remain hard at work on behalf of the animals they serve. The place has lovely grounds, indoors its pretty bare bones and the staff - well they're not trying to win you over or get your business- but it is a good place, and they do pediatric neuters and give rescues a discount. I give it an excellent- I'll take healthy animals over cosmetics any day of the week.

    Pros

Provides low cost spay neuter, adoptiong, has a rabbit sanctuary

    Cons

    Can be less than friendly

  • 3. Really nice people, so helpful

    by: kathrynnj

I can not thank the AWA enough for all they've helped me with. Let's start off with they helped give me advice for the stray kittens I found outback.. they ended up taking a litter of FIVE kittens from out there because one of them was special needs..... then just today they spayed one of my mommy cats for free! I have already adopted 7 cats and had them fixed, she was number eight and they fixed her with a spay/neuter certificate.. that saved me some money that I can now use towards spaying/neutering OTHER feral and stray cats... and giving my kitties treats =P\n\nThis shelter is just amazing. They do everything right. The animals there are great and I love helping them out on the weekends.\n\nSpecial THANK YOU to Paula Dean + Lisa Ross for helping me out with everything. \n

    Pros

really nice, staff is great, they love saving lives

    Cons

    NOTHING!

  • 4. I love this place

    by: llynn516

I found this place when i needed a home to take my kittens too. They welcomed me with open arms. I since have surrended several strays that i have fostered and they are always there to help me, sometimes i have a little wait to get the kitties in but they always come through for me. I have seven cats of my own and will not hesitate to help a cat in need but can't keep everyone i find, unfortunately. I thank god for no kill shelters like this, thank you.

    Pros

friendly knowledgeable staff, convenience, experienced, always help when i need them

    Cons

distance, usually full but will make room

    by: BUSYBEEOF3

my family and i just adopted poochie (puci) on 4/5/08. we had to go 3 days in a row with our other 2 dogs and 3 kids before they allowed us to adopt him.i was a bit upset with that at first, but after i found out that he was already adopted and then brought back within the last 10 days, i understood. they just wanted to make sure he was going to fit in and stay with us. well, he is such a great dog, i thank the people who brought him back. we just love him so much.

    by: moggyjack

This place is amazing! I stopped by to volunteer but after seeing the facility I thought my efforts were needed elsewhere and I volunteered at a different shelter. Staff and volunteers are wonderful. They offer at cost vacinations for dogs and cats so I take advantage of this money saving service.

  • 13. A Terrific Shelter

    by: Fishy1

We adopted a cat (Skeeter) from AWA. The staff was knowledable and helpful with Skeeter and adjustment recommendations with our two younger sons. Overall it was a great experience, highly recommended.

    Pros

Many different pets available, view pets online, wealth of volunteers!

    Cons

Although the pet cage area is VERY clean, other areas could be kept slighlty neater!

  • 14. Keep up the good work

    by: dstranz3

I adopted 2 older.cats from here about 4 years ago and both were very healthy. I was hoping to adopt from them a couple of weeks ago, but they did not have any kittens available at that time so I got one somewhere else. I would definately adopt from here again in the future.

    Pros

    very friendly, clean

    Cons

breaks my heart to see animals in cages!

  • 15. Saving dogs from Virginia

    by: BShack

Our county in Virginia has highest regard for the staff at AWA. They have taken in many, many litters of our unwanted "surplus" puppies over the past two years, and have welcomed them with open arms. I feel good placing pups here, because they have an on-site clinic, and will make sure the animals are healthy before they are adopted. In addition, they perform temperament testing on all adoptees, to make certain they will be a good match for their new family. Hats off to AWA!

    Pros

Take in injured and hard-to-adopt animals

    Cons

    Transport distance from VA

  • 16. Love my pet!

    Cons

  • 18. good customer service

    by: TheThompsonFamily

found stray kitten in voorhees and they refused to take her. apparentlly all strays have to go to lakeland, then get transferred back to the voorhees facility. that makes a lot of sense. also their cat adoption policy is "no wait"; are any background checks being done?

    Pros

clean, staff approach you and let you know their name if you need help, etc

    Cons

didn't like their "policy" on strays

  • 19. spay/neuter clinic

    by: katiel

AWA spay/neuter clinic is wonderful. They offer low cost spay and neuter and have a vaccination clinic on Mondays. They are wonderful with feral cats, and I shudder to think how many more homeless cats would be in South Jerser were it not for their dedication to preventing needless births. The clinic staff is wonderful. They are extremely knowledgeable, and always strive to be helpful. I wish they offered the vaccination clinic on other days besides Monday. Sometimes, it is very crowded, due to the high demand for services. The clinic is very cramped and they could really use the makeover!

    Pros

    service for everyone

    Cons

  • 20. Totally Devoted to Strays!

    by: lisalisa22

My daughters and I have gone to the AWA many times in search to adopt a puppy or young dog. Each and every time we've been there, we're always welcomed and shown every dog without hesitation. Although we actually have ended adopted our pups elsewhere due to a matter of "timing" and nothing else, we still go back and visit; utilize their low cost spay/neuter/prescription services; and donate blankets and treats. It always smells clean and all the dogs are treated so very well and special care given to each application to ensure each of their animals is placed in a "forever" home instead of a temporary one. The staff is so very knowledgable about different breeds and really take into consideration your home environment when suggesting a dog which may be a perfit fit for you. They are readily able to answer any question or concern you may have and make scheduling of services a breeze and never give you a snide look if you're financially challenged and need to get reduced fees for services you would otherwise be unable to afford at your Vet's office, i.e. spay/neuter in particular and their shots. This is the place you want to go when you're searching for a friend you wish to provide a loving home to. Don't buy from breeders or stores. These strays need you and won't ever let you down as your forever companion and friend. Thanks, AWA and keep up the wonderful, dedicated work you provide to all your furry friends and their "families."

    Pros

Every aspect of the shelter is on the "pro" side.

    Cons

    There are none.

  • 21. A wonderful place to find your family

    by: SuzyandRex

I was having a hard time finding brother and sister kittens. This sehlter, too, had none available yet but a littler of 5 had recently come in and was staying in thier Intensive Care Unit because they had respiratory infections. \r\n\r\nThey let me get a preview and I fell in LOVE! I took the big guy (Rex) and anyone of his remaining little sisters (turned out to be Suzy). I had to wait a few weeks before I could have them, since they were being treated, but I am so glad I did. AWA took such good care of them and they are healthy and strong and loving and sweet. Obviously, they suffered no trauma there and felt loved by humans and thankful for being able to stay together as long as possible. \r\n\r\nI am so thankful for this shelter and the family they game us. Highly recommend!! \r\n

  • 25. Volunteering @ the AWA

    by: bwarech

I am a regular volunteer, volunteering up to 3 days a week, trying to juggle with school. Every time I walk in the shelter, I feel welcome and at home. The paid staff is extremely nice, they know everything about every animal, and they treat every animal like it is their own. The staff really cares about the dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, and other animals that they help on a daily basis. This isn't just a job for them, its their career that they love. This shelter is great! I highly recommend it to anyone adopting an animal. All animals must go through a thorough health exam, when they are entered and when they are adopted. The animals are great, too! You gotta love this shelter. Maybe I will see you there one time stopping bye. \n\nThank you,\nBrandon

    Pros

Staff is knowelagable about the cats, the staff treats all the animals like its their own, Very Clean, not any restrictions on volunteering times.
