  • 1. Torn...

    by: oreolump

I had been searching for a new family member for quite some time and recently found my puppy on Petfinder.com at the WARL. I had been reading up on adoption processes for other shelters and was boggled at how easily I was able to adopt. I did not have to prove anything, just walk in, fill out a couple of forms, and POOF, I had a dog. They did not give all of the information about the animals until you filled out the paperwork, but were quick to look at something you may have seen as a problem.

    Pros

Nearby, uses Petfinder.com to help view available pets

    Cons

    very lax adoption process

  • 2. help the W.A.R.L.

    by: ejoyce56

i have adopted several dogs from the W.A.R.L. over the years. My last dog was a senior dog named Herbie. I didn't have him long, he died about a year after I got him, but he was the best dog i ever had.My heart always breaks when i go to a shelter, but the people at W.A.R.L are upbeat and you can see they are devoted to the animals. We need some outside help with funding, the economy is taking it's toll, and as always, the animals get the short end of the stick. With so many home foreclosures the shelters are overloaded with unwanted pets.I would ask anyone who cares about animals to make a donation to their local shelters, mine being the W.A.R.L.It would be great if we could win this makeover, but we are pretty far down on the list and it looks doubtful. I willl continue to support the W.A.R.L and pray for the animals and people who care for them.

    Pros

    friendly staff, animals well kept

    Cons

    noisey!!! outdated pens

    by: ztT4MP55608632_DEAD

I cant believe they went from kill shelter to NO KILL shelter and with in 6 months they started to kill again - SHAME ON U. This is 2008 I think where is other ways of "helping animals"

    Pros

    Cons

  • 5. Good Shelter

    by: cecil

I visited this shelter today and it is clean and the animals look very well. There is not overcrowding and a good staff. I called earlier because I had lost my cat. They were very compassionate and took my name, number and desc of my cat in case he turned up there. I would definitely adopt there - I'm just not emotionally ready right now.

    Pros

    very clean, good animal quarters

    Cons

    couldn't see any

  • 6. Love WARL!

    by: leaseg

I have been a patron of the Worcester Animal Rescue League for many years. My first cat,Snuggy, came from there and we had her for 18 years. Since then I have gotten two more cats from WARL -- Phoebe and Milo. Phoebe has passed on but we still have Milo, and he's great! I have always boarded my cats at WARL during vacations and have never had any problems. I would recommend this rescue league to anyone!

    Pros

    Animal Boarding

    Cons

    Can't think of any

  • 7. Great place!

    by: judithmorin

Great place!! Have found two wonderful cats to share our lives with over the years and when a stray cat was dumped in my sisters yard they opened their arms to care for it while a shelter in Sterling, Ma would not accept it without at least 75.00 to start. If you need a pet please visit and see for yourself. If you would like to donate they can always use food and towels and litter! Thanks

    Pros

    Wonderful caring staff

    Cons

    need a larger place!

  • 8. We owe Eternal Thanks...

    by: merlin1

We joined this site ZOOTOO to support this AWESOME Rescue, but we have gotten more out of it by just featuring our non human family together in one place. \nFour of our cats, and our dog have come from this place and we are so grateful to them. \n

    Pros

    Clean place, caring staff.

    Cons

  • 10. Go here for your new best friends

    by: Adelphie86

We had a wonderful experience the first time we went to WARL to get a new dog. The staff was friendly and helpful. The puppy we picked actually came from the Save-A-Sato program that WARL is a part of. She was such an amazing dog and we've enjoyed having her so much that we came back about 7 months later to adopt another dog, also from the Save-A-Sato program. Please check out their website (which stays updated on the animals they have at the shelter) or go right in to find your new pet! Or if you've already adopted a pet from there, please consider donating money because they're very much in need of it right now!

    Pros

Animals are clean, can take for walks or into play area or private room, can bring your own pets to meet new family member, helpful staff

    Cons

Number of dogs available is sometimes low, especially if looking for a puppy, but they're part of Save-A-Sato so new dogs brought in a lot

  • 11. Wonderful Animal Shelter

    by: DogLover85

I have adopted three dogs from the Worcester Animal Rescue League in the past. They have a wonderful, caring staff. Two of the three dogs had a rough start in life: one as a stray in Worcester and one as a stray who traveled from Puerto Rico with the Save-a-Sato program. All three dogs were well cared for at the Rescue League and were friendly and happy dogs when we adopted them. Two of the dogs have lived long lives: one to be fifteen years old. One is thirteen years old. The third dog is a puppy that we have had since last October. She is doing wonderful because of the good care that she got at the Animal Rescue League. She had all of her shots when we got her, she had been fixed, and she had a chip implanted in her so that we could locate her if she was ever lost and turned up at a shelter or a vet. We have been completely satisfied with the Animal Rescue League of Worcester!

    Pros

    Excellent, caring staff

    Cons

    None

  • 13. Best Shelter Around

    by: catenamored229

I adopted my cat here three and a half years ago, and it was the best thing I ever did. She had been mistreated in her previous home, and was very small. But as she's grown, she's developed a great personality and she's a bit chunky now.... But the adoption process was easy, because of the knowledgeable and caring staff. I would recommend this shelter to anyone looking for a friend in need of a home.

    Pros

Very clean environment, loving and caring staff who are easy to work with

    Cons

Very small building, not enough room for all the great work they do

  • 14. Great place for all animals.

    by: xTwisTx

I've been volunteering here for over a year now, and it's just a great place. It's a no-kill shelter, so the majority of pets find homes. The staff is great, and they really care about the animals. They take in as many animals as they can, and they get adopted almost as fast as they come in! They're even involved with a program that rescues dogs from Puerto Rico and brings them to the US. \n\nWe adopted our dog from the WARL way back in 2000, and she's doing great here. Great place to volunteer. =]

    Pros

    No-kill shelter

    Cons

Small though it would be bigger if possible

  • 15. Lots of love here!

    by: friendofanimals

I visit this shelter quite often and it is always very clean and well organized. The staff, though very busy, is always willing to take the time to make visitors feel welcome and answer any questions they may have. This shelter provides a vital service to the community and deserves generous support from all of us. \r\n\r\nTo Doreen and the rest of the staff: Keep up the good work! We appreciate all that you do to help our fine animal friends!

    Pros

The animals here are in very capable and loving hands

    Cons

Larger facility needed as well as more parking

  • 16. Lots of great animals!

    by: beanspeckbeck

It is my local shelter and I have bought dogs here in the past. I always liked that they have older dogs and cats. However, the application is so scrutinous that it is even hard for a devoted pet lover like me to get an animal there. They called my vet and saw that I had a lot of pets (guinea pigs, rabbitts, etc). The girl rudely remarked "How many pets do you have anyway?" I tried to explain that most of the pets had passed away but were still on the books at the vet and she flat out denied me adopting the dog I wanted. I guess she didn't take the time to think that if I brough my guinea pigs and rabbits to the vet, I was probably a responsible pet owner. Oh well.

    Pros

    Lots of great rescue animals!

    Cons

Adoption process is long and complicated

  • 17. Great Shelter

    by: ElmoG15

I love being able to take my dogs to this shelter for nail trimmings, rabies updates, Sato reunions, and their fun fundraising activities. The staff is very friendly and kind.

    Pros

    Reasonably priced services and adoptions.

    Cons

    No public vet care

    by: PaisleyPrincess

I work at a local Petco. Every week I have communication with WARL. We support WARL during all of our seasonal fund raisers. I am happy to say I am proud of how WARL uses it's donated resources to help a communtiy that has many stray and needy cats and dogs. Each week WARL adopts out on average 15 cats and 20 dogs! THANK YOU WARL!

    Pros

Community Pillar for Animals in Need!

    Cons

  • 19. Hel save the Worcester ARL!

    by: JakeEbel

I love the Worcester ARL. It is a great place and seems to be very well operated. I hope it can stay around for a long time to come.

    Pros

Fantastic people, clean and great place.

    Cons

That it might be closing if it doesn't get helped.

  • 20. Help for the Worcester Animal Rescue League

    by: MOONBEAM

The Worcester animal Rescue League has improved its' outreach programs and adoption policies. However, it relies solely on donations and is a very small facility that is in desperate need of expansion and update. It services not only the second largest city in New England but is used by many surrounding towns by local animal control and individuals. We do not have a local chapter of the MSPCA, so we are in desperate need of help for the Worcester Animal Rescue League.

    Pros

small facility that does a lot of good to the second largest city in New England

    Cons

not enough funding from all of the area towns that utilize it

  • 24. WARL

    by: lorted

This facility is small and covers a large area, yet the facility is very clean and the staff eager to help. If you are looking for a certain pet and they don't have that pet at their facility, they will go the extra to help in your search. They care about each and every animal that comes through their door, which is many, and do their best to find good homes for them. This facility definitely needs a makeover and we definitely need this facility in Worcester.

    Pros

clean facility, knowledgeable, caring staff, location

    Cons

    small facility

  • 25. Great Shelter

    by: dogkitt

This is a very good shelter. Dog cages have two parts, so if they do not want to see you, they go into the other part. Cat cages have all sorts of things for them to climb on in the cage. There are rooms so you can get to know your potential pet. The only con is that with all of the barking dogs, it can get quite loud. Overall, it is a great place to pick up a new best friend.

    Pros

Nice cages, set up, and staff

    Cons

    Very Loud

  • 26. Great Animal Shelter!

    by: ajr01606

I live about 5 minutes from this shelter and I have adopted all three of my animals from here. I frequently donate pet items. Whenever I go in there to donate everyone is friendly and thankful. They take good care of their animals and I would recommend anyone to this shelter.

    Excellent.

    Cons

  • 28. great shelter

    by: samsannie

The worcester animal rescue league helps many animals. They are caring, compasionate and very helpful. They do all they can to help the unwanted cats and dogs in the area. All their animals are spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccines and tested for heartworm or feline aids/leukemia before being adopted. This place is deserving of a makeover because there are still so many other animals out on the streets that need help. The animal rescue league even performs surgery on injured animals. This is a non-profit organization looking for all the help they can get inorder to continue to help the 7000 animals that pass through there a year.

    Pros

Caring staff to take care of the animals

    Cons

    none

  • 29. I love this place!

    by: SaveWARL

It's devastating to think that this shelter might need to close. I can't imagine life without the wonderful animals I've adopted from here. The staff truly cares about the animals and really takes the time to assess their individual personalities to help make a perfect "forever home" match.

    Pros

Great, well-cared for animals, caring employees

    Cons

    None!

  • 30. good place

    by: Vfisk326

I have adopted 4 cats from WARL. They have all been in good health. The folks who work there are very friendly and helpful. This shelter handles a huge volume of animals and does a really great job.

    Pros

Lots of choices, relatively straightforward adoption

    Cons

    no complaints

  • 31. An amazing, caring local resource

    by: tasmin

I adopted my first pet from WARL in 2000 and have been a frequent visitor since. The staff is unbelievably kind and caring, and the shelter is set up to let you interact extensively with the animals (either by settling down in a private pet room or by walking the dogs on the large property). I also utilize their boarding service for my dog, and he's always very well cared for. Animals (and animal lovers!) in the Worcester area are so lucky to have this resource.

    Pros

    Everything!

    Cons

None that I can think of

  • 32. I love this shelter, they had my Dino Bear for 2 months!!!

    by: Rocksta9150

I went in one time after looking at a couple of different shelters for a dog. I went in and was immediately greeted, and I walked back into the caged area. Dino, formerly Danny, nibbled on my fingers when I stopped at his cage. That same day, I brought him home with me and he has been my best friend since. He was rescued from another shelter by WARL and I am forever grateful. I cannot imagine my life without him. They kept him safe for two months until I found him, and they would have kept him until he found a loving home. It means a lot to me that there are places like this that give these poor animals a second chance. I don't understand how somebody could ever want to give up something so precious. I will never not adopt a pet ever again. Words cannot describe the relationship I have with my Dino bear, and I am forever thankful that it was WARL that brought us together!! I will never forget it.

    Pros

    Clean, friendly

    Cons

    Nothing

  • 33. Keep WARL alive!!!

    by: TaraAshley4

I love this rescue league. When I was growing up we got all of our animals from the rescue league and every one of them had the best disposition. Please keep this rescue alive, if we don't, the pets that I grew up with and loved will never be able to find loving forever homes :(

    Pros

    Gives loving animals homes

    Cons

    closing soon

  • 34. Great Shelter

    by: Frannie

We adopted 2 cats from this shelter, and they were the best of our bunch. We loved them. We brought a poor injured stray who was waundering the streets and they certainly helped the little dear out. We need to support this shelter as a community as they help the most innocent creatures of our society.

    Pros

    Convenient, Prompt, Helpful

    Cons

Can't think of anything that is bad

  • 35. Excellent Shelter

    by: casareale

The Worcester Animal Rescue League has very dedicated and caring employees. Everyone who works there sincerely cares for the animals and their welfare. If you are looking to adopt an animal, this shelter is an excellent place to do so. There is a possibility that the shelter might have to close down due to financial instability, so please support this shelter!

    Pros

The staff are friendly and truly care about the animals.

    Cons

    None.

  • 36. Committed to Saving Lives

    by: JanB

The Worcester Animal Rescue League is a very clean, friendly wonderful place for homeless dogs and cats. The staff is committed to saving lives every day and are always looking for ways to find "forever" homes for all the animals that come in their doors. It is a very positive place. Every animal is adopted out spayed and neutered, which is also vital. The WARL serves as the pound for 18 cities and towns in Worcester County. The vast majority of animals that come in from animal control and are impounded, either find their own home again, or move over to the shelter, after the holding period, then find a new home. No one is killed because of disease status, treatable health issue or injury. This is very impressive considering they take in over 10,000 animals a year!

    Pros

    Well located, friendly staff, compassionate

    Cons

Have space constraints, that's why they need a makeover!

  • 37. Worcester Animal Rescue League

  • 38. Very Helpful Resource

    by: llhugo

I'm not extremely familiar with this Shelter, but have called them on three occasions for assistance when I've picked up stray dogs in Holden. Holden's animal control is never available, and the police department is not helpful with strays (although they are a great department otherwise). Worcester Animal Rescue League has always been willing to take the strays in. The staff has been very helpful.

    Pros

    Always willing to help

    Cons

    Nothing negative to say

  • 39. Dedicated Shelter
