  • 1. Best Shelter Around

    by: dawn0211

I work at a local pet store and come in contact with many different animal shelters and Animal Protectors is by far the best one around. The staff and volunteers there are very friendy and all genuinely care for the animals there. They are the only shelter that comes to the store faithfully every weekend with dogs and cats in need of homes.I have fostered one of their dogs and am in the process of adopting him now and anytime anything was ever needed it was just a phone call away. The are all very nice there but I have dealt mainly with Cheryl. She is extremely nice and has the best interests of the animal at heart. My dog and I will be forever grateful to her and her compassion. If you are looking for a new family member this is the place to go.

    Pros

    friendly,caring,knowledgeable

    Cons

    none

  • 2. Love this shelter

    by: slwerksman

I adopted a dog from this shelter two years ago, and love the place. When we were looking for another dog, it's the first place we headed. Everyone is very friendly and cares about the animals. The place is very clean and not near as depressing as some places. The only problem we had, was they do have many volunteers. When we were interested in a dog it was hard to find someone that knew any amount about him. But they tried hard and kept in contact with us for about 6 months, until all problems we might have w/ him were remedied. Would recommend it.

    Pros

    Very clean

    Cons

finding a person that knows what you looking for

  • 3. shelter

    by: janice524

Although this is a small shelter and it needs some work the people working and volunteering here really care about the animals. I have been to other shelters that have better facilities but theses people have more heart than most.

    Pros

needs more space and a makeover

    Cons

    The people are great

  • 4. i love the animal protectors of allegheny vallet

    by: brandiohara2008

I live just a few doors away and i have 6 cats of my own and I go in and they know me by name and all ways ask how my animals are doing they are so nice and they treat the animals like they are people you go in and they are talking to the cats and the dogs and one time i went in I had got a cat from them and he died just a few mos. after I got him and the lady was crying and was so upset he had been there for a long time like 2 years and he was a x-mas gift for my husband and he died 2 days before Valentine's day and they sent me a card that was signed by all the people that worked there and they was going to let me have a nother cat but some one had tossed a cat out of their car and they got him fixed for me because I was going to keep him. please if you want to help animals they are the people to vote for I think they are just so great and they do alot of great thing for the animals that no one wants and they are happy to do it I wish they could get a make over so they have more space because they need it

    Pros

    very nice people work there

    Cons

small and they need to make it over for the animals

  • 5. Adoption through Animal Protectors at PetSmart

    by: ktyc122

Adopted our cat at PetSmart. Clearly this shelter cares about its pets, as it runs checks on an potential adoptive homes. The staff was always very friendly on the phone. The lack of communication was a problem though, as they don't return phone calls in a very efficient manner.

    Pros

    very friendly, cares about animals

    Cons

    communication (or lack thereof)

  • 6. Small shelter deserves help.

    by: Vanessa74

I volunteer at AP and also adopted my two kittens from there. The staff and volunteers are very dedicated and do a good job with limited space and resources. A larger facility would be wonderful - more cats could be let out of cages sooner and also a room for visitors and those wanting to adopt to interact with the animals.

    Pros

    Dedicated caring staff and volunteers

    Cons

Very limited size, need bigger cat room and a room for animals to interact with potential adoptive "parents."

  • 13. They're the BEST!

    by: Bisli

I got a 15 yr. old Maltese from them that no other shelter would have taken (or at least put up for adoption). But they knew that she should be snoozing away her golden years rather than being put to sleep. Tinkerbell is sweet and gentle and I am so happy to have her.\r\nThanks for giving her a chance.

    Pros

    Great caring staff

    Cons

Should have more hours for the public

    by: addy11

I live near this shelter and most of the people are very thankful when i have dropped of rugs, dog food, stamps and i do not require them to send me a thank you. i do it for the animals. But there have been times when i have called for their help because of an animal being dropped of at my work and around the home and i always seem to get this one lady who doesn't even want to take my name and number to help find it a home , come on lets all help each other out for the animals.

    by: eabarry

This Shelter is wonderful. They really need more room and more people who care as much as they do. I donate to them and hope more people would. All of my Dog have come from this shelter and I could not ask for better dogs.

    Pros

    they love the animals

    Cons

    the building is small

  • 24. Loving caretakers

    by: RJA

This is a small shelter, but the animals there are very well cared for and given alot of love and compassion by the small employee group and volunteers. They treat the animals as though they were their own and know each animal well. That way they can help people who are looking for a pet to choose a pet that is best matched to their desires. The down side is that it is so small that there is bearly room to get around and they are limited to the number of animals they can take in. They need more space, more helpers and more money to care for the animals.

    Pros

The people really care about the animals there.

    Cons

Need more space and more funding.

  • 25. Great Place for a Short Stop

Its small, but it packed with gental, loving, knowledgeable, outgoing, staff, and volunteers. We have been blessed to have two four legged angels from them alone. by: KathyAbraham

This is a great little shelter. It is small but we take care of as many animals as we can. I really enjoy volunteering there. Everyone there shares a true love of the animals and works together to do all we can to help them. We could really use the shelter makeover for our animals.

  • 33. Small shelter, huge heart

    by: klh6977

When you walk into this shelter, you can feel the love and caring that goes into these animals. The workers take the time to get to know each one and would love to tell you more about them and their stories. Their adoption prices are more than reasonable and it includes many things like spay/neutering, license and even starter food. I adopted one of my two dogs my first day volunteering at the shelter. It was the best choice I ever made.

    Pros

    The animals and the people

    Cons

Too small, needs to be bigger to offer more help

AP staff is caring, loves their animals, tries to do their best in such a small environment. Dedicated volunteers try to help but when the shelter gets overcrowded and animals have to be put in offices makeshift cages etc. its hard to keep the animals from getting stressed out. Lots of pit bulls due to the area the shelter is in--they're all such sweet dogs.I would love to see AP get a makeover.

    Pros

    caring staff and volunteers

    Cons

    too small

  • 36. Helped me in a time of need

    by: Momaria

A very nice staff person there, Jody, tried to save my dog's (Jake) life. It was a Sunday morning, and he was not acting right. He was unable to walk, and my boyfriend and I hoped that volunteers and staff would be at the shelter walking dogs, and they were. She tried CPR, but Jake continued on his journey to the Rainbow Bridge. My new dog, Joddi, is named in her honor. I will never forgot Jody for her compassion and support that day.

    Pros

  • 38. No Kill

    by: RichStoops

I love this shelter. They are no kill despite being an animal control, which is a huge accomplishment in itself, and they are very friendly toward the bully breeds, which are near and dear to my heart. The staff and volunteers do great by these animals, I only wish the facility were bigger and could take more animals!

    Pros

    No kill, great for pits

    Cons

    Small

  • 40. volunteering pays off

    by: Pethavin

I have been a volunteer with this shelter for over 20 years and have met many wonderful friends, both 2 and 4 legged. This shelter works very hard at placing animals that may not have a future if it weren't for this nonprofit animal shelter. It is very rewarding and I never have regretted my involvement and encourage outs to get active and meet the challenges and love of animals who are in shelters.

    Pros

    Helping the helpless animals

    Cons

You get attached to the animals

  • 41. Pit bull friendly

    by: sherman

I find more and more that shelters won't take in pit bulls. I'm happy to say that this one does. This is another great shelter working with not enough people, money, space, adopters and public awareness. \r\n\r\nKeep up the good work.

    Pros

pit bull friendly, people doing a good job

    Cons

  • 42. Best Shelter in Area

    by: mbodine

This is a great shelter, I have been volunteering here for over 15 years and it is the best in the area. The staff is great, they treat the animals like they were there own pets.

    Pros

    Knowledgeable Staff

    Cons

    Short open hours

  • 43. Shelter needs more space

    by: kerigirl

Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley is one of the only shelters in the area. They do a great job of caring for the animals and the staff is wonderful. Unfortunately the shelter is quite small and can use an expansion. The animals are well cared for and get much attention from staff and visitors. It would be great if they had more room to run and play. I got my cat from this shelter and she is very healthy. I have never had a problem with any animals my family has received from Animal Protectors.

    Pros

    very friendly and caring

    Cons

    very small

  • 44. Loving care for homeless animals

    by: beaner50

Animal Protectors has been helping homeless animals since the early 80's. The animals are loved and cared for by volunteers and a small group of employees. The building is very crowded in all areas. Even so the dogs and cats get the best care possible. The dogs get walked on a regular schedule and love playing in the fenced in yard. The cats are kept in cages and also in a cat room where they roam free. The shelter needs a facelift in all areas. Would be very nice to have a visitors room. Where the animals could get to know potenial owners.

    Pros

    helpful people

    Cons

    very small

  • 45. I love working here. This shelter is great!

    by: vettech07

I have had the privilege of working with this place for three years now. I volunteered for two years before I was hired as a kennel worker. We have a staff of about 10 right now. I have worked there over a year now and there is never a dull moment. We are either full to capacity with dogs or when it's not dogs it's cats. It's a neverending cycle. I am part of the crew that cleans the animals every morning so I know for sure we do a good job keeping it in shipshape. We are constantly putting away donations which is awesome but we are running out of room to store it. I love working here and there is only one thing I would change and that would be the space. This shelter is a very professional place and the animal are the first priority. They get great medical care and TLC.

    Pros

I love working here, all the animals get great care!

    Cons

    We Need More Space!!!!!!!

  • 46. Love this place!!

    by: emilyxoxowelsh

You won't find a more dedicated staff of people anywhere. They clearly love animals, and do everything in their power to help them. I am a volunteer here, and am only able to get there once a week, but everyday I am there they are busy with work. They are passionate animal lovers, and I am proud to be a part of their team.

    Pros

    Wonderful staff

    Cons

It is in such a cramped building :(

  • 47. Small shelter with big heart

    by: SueZQ

Needs your makeover. Very hard working and dedicated core of volunteers and part-time employees. Always looking for ways to improve. A lot of pit bull mixes, but super nice dogs

    Pros

    homey atmosphere

    Cons

    too small

  • 48. Caring People

    by: PunkieRay

I have volunteered here now and then for over four years. I see the love and caring given to these animals by the staff and other volunteers. I give the shelter a lot of credit for taking in Pit Bulls, which is a necessity in the New Kensington area.

    Pros

Staff truly cares about the animals

    Cons

    Facility needs updated and/or enlarged

  • 49. provide great care and it shows in the temperment of the animals...facility is small and the animals would benefit from a larger facility.

    by: annikandme4

used to volunteer, stopped due to illness, plan on return soon... space is necessary for continued care of dogs and cats. this shelter works with socialising pets also...they dont just put them in any home just to put them in a home...kudoos for them

    Pros

run by animal lovers and it shows

    Cons

    too small

  • 50. Great Place to Volunteer

    by: chicken5

I am a volunteer at the shelter. I love coming to the shelter to spend time with the animals. I enjoy walking the dogs, playing with the cats, and helping in any way I can. The dogs are so loveable, playful, and energetic. Our shelter is in New Kensington, which I think sometimes scares people away. We also have a lot of pit bull mixes, which may also scare people. The pit bulls make my time at the shelter rewarding and fun. Most of out pits want nothing more than a lap to sit on, regardless of how big they are. I would encourage people to come to the shelter to get to know the many animals that come to our shelter.

    Pros

A lot of great cats, loveable dogs, and helpful volunteers

    Cons

    Not enough space

  • 51. What a great shelter!

  • 52. AP a small shelter in Allegheny Valley

    by: lessig

Animal Protectors is a small shelter in the New Kensington area. A few miles north of Pittsburgh, PA. The dogs and cats are loved and care for by volunteers and a small staff of employees. The volunteers and staff work hard to keep the animals happy and healthy. The building is very small and usually every cage and kennel is filled with a cat or dog waiting for a loving home. Animal Protectors is a non-profit/no-kill animal shelter.

    Pros

    Volunteers and staff

    Cons

Needs a makeover on the current building.

  • 53. I'm a volunteer - love the place

    by: 2LabsSue

Small no-kill shelter that serves as animal control for their local community, which is not an easy task. Great part-time staff that cleans and cares for the animals. Strictly volunteers that socialize and walk dogs and cuddle cats and do adoptions. Everyone that volunteers and works there loves animals! Very small shelter, but jam packed full of love for every animal under its roof!

    Pros

Great staff and volunteer base that LOVE animals

    Cons

    none

  • 54. AP of AK Valley

    by: mattidozer

My husband and I have visited the center many times. We would take food, treats to the dogs when we could. The staff make you feel so comfortable there, and never do you feel pressured. There are always dogs out with walkers, playing in the fenced in area when you drive past. The place is clean and the animals get a lot of attention from the staff and the visitors. I commend them for their work and effort in being a no kill shelter.

    Pros

all of the animals look well cared for, staff is nice and knowledgable

    Cons

none, other than there are many animals that need adoption

  • 55. Adopt a pet!!!

    by: Kori

There are so many wonderful dogs and cats. Being in New Kensington, there are alot of Pitt bulls at the shelter, but they are lovable. A P is a small no kill shelter and has many dedicated workers and volunteers. If you have some spare time, I recommend getting some exercise--Have you walked a dog today?!? The shelter dogs would love for you to walk, pet, bathe or adopt them! If you are more of a cat person, they have lots of them too. The community cat room is nice, the cats have the freedom to mingle and sit on the shelves in the sun. The hallway is too crowded with extra cats in all the cages. If you are looking for a new friend, stop by, I'm sure you'll find the right one!

    Pros

They have tons of dogs and cats.

    Cons

    Few open hours.
