    by: flowerflyby

I called them on Saturday to report a found cat. The woman who helped me over the phone was extremely nice. She took the time to get the appropriate information, check their lost and found list and even gave me phone numbers of other places to call.

    Pros

    Very Helpful over the phone

    Cons

    Not sure

  • 3. Sick cats

    by: EDA

My sister adopted two year old cats. When they were released from surgery the vet noted a respiratory issue with both. She was told to bring them back instead of having them treated right there. \r\nBoth were in danger of dying, and the one will always have cloudy eyes.\r\nI dont want to discourage anyone from adopting from here. Just press the vets to treat animals asap

    Pros

    Good staff

    Cons

    sick animals

I personally have gotten the privilege of working with the APA through my veterinary assistant class at my technical highschool. they sent a canine to us every wed. and we were able to perform the skills that we learned on them for practice. vaccines, TPR's, grooming etc. the school would not give us the necessary equipment to actually run any pre-screens or just check the levels of the red and white blood cells so we were not allowed to draw blood. the school wasn't real excited about about having the program in the first place, but if they didn't, I would not have met my wonderful teacher Mr. Mac, RVT. he got us through our last year of H.S. thank god. now all of us are done and graduated, most of us went on to get our technician licenses and others had other plans.

    Pros

    this is an excellent facility

    Cons

this is not a nokill facility. which is very sad.

  • 8. A Reputable Shelter

    by: jujubjs

Friendly staff. Usually pretty clean. \r\nAnimals are usually displaying some sort of kennel cough which can quickly worsen. APA should work to improve this.

    Pros

    Newer facility. Large.

    Cons

So large it is easy to fall behind in maintenance and become understaffed.

  • 9. Great Pet Education

    by: mamajo

The folks at APA were able to take my class of intellectually and behaviorally challenged fifth and sixth graders on short notice when a trip to another shelter became problematic.\r\nThe kids were learning about character traits of caring and kindness, and saw those in action at the shelter. So many children in our cities are exposed to the worst of pet ownership; I feel it's imperative to expose the kids to positive, responsible, and compassionate people who understand and appreciate the companionship that comes with living with animals. The folks at APA were helpful, informative, and respectful to my often boisterous crowd.\r\nBesides seeing how responsible, caring people interact with animals, my students were also exposed to future volunteer and/or work possibilities. It is so important for kids with "disabilities" to find safe places to practice their job-related skills.\r\nThanks, guys, for saving the Community Access day.

    Pros

    These folks care

    Cons

    They need help

  • 10. APA GREAT SHELTER

    by: NWILKINSON

The staff at the APA were very friendly and helpful when I went to adopt my dog. My dog was 7 years old and had been at the shelter for 2 months, but they kept him because he had such a sweet personality. I liked the amount of information that they were able to provide about his past, he was an owner turn in. Some of the shelters have made it too expensive for many people to adopt pets. I am happy to be able to give him a good home.

    Pros

VERY REASONABLE COST TO ADOPT A PET

    Cons

DO NOT HAVE MANY PUPPIES, GET A LOT OF PIT BULLS

  • 11. APA of MO rocks!

    by: Janee02

When looking for new kittens, my family originally went to the Humane Society of Missouri. When we did not get the good service we wanted, we headed over to the APA where we found the complete opposite. Warm and friendly, the people there gave us the information we desired and let us see the animals we wanted. When I saw a small orange tabby originally named "Lodus", I instantly fell in love with him. From there, I adopted him and renamed him "Rocky". The cages the animals were in were pretty clean and the animals all seemed to be fairing well. I was able to hold Rocky promptly and made my decision quickly-he was the one! The association offered multiple services including all of his shots (minus rabies), declaw and neutering services right on the spot and I picked him back up within 3 days. For Rocky, the total price was right around $150 (I remember getting everything done for my other cat that cost me almost 3x as much). I highly recommend this association to other St. Louisans-they really are great!

    Pros

Great customer service, knowledgable staff, very reasonable prices

    Cons

    none

  • 12. APA --Trying to help the animals!

    by: nanandjen

They have very caring and knowledgeable staff. They try to find every animal a home. They make every attempt to reach people through their web site and events that they hold.

    Pros

Their staff and what they try to do.

    Cons

    No shelter is perfect.

  • 13. APA is very helpful with Lost/Found dogs

    by: rcahoon

The Apa has been extremely helpful to me in reuniting lost dogs with their owners who are looking for them. Much more helpful than the Humane Society who never return calls or even answer their phones. An APA volunteer can match a "Lost dog" notice with a "found dog" notice, usually within 24 hours, and the pet is reunited with the owner quickly.

    Pros

    very helpful in Lost/Found situations

    Cons

they are not no-kill, they are "open admission"

  • 14. Very helpful

    by: gaknott

We found a dog and took it to the APA, who was very happy to help us and give the dog a chance--unlike the Humane Society, which had said it would have to put the dog down, because it looked too much like a pt bull. We were glad to see that the APA takes on the hard cases.

    Pros

    Great assistance from no-kill shelter

    Cons

    None

  • 15. I love my MIMI

    by: mimichinook

I appreciated the amount of information they had available about my dog when I adopted her. I am a good dog parent but I think they should do a little more of a background check before they let you just walk out with a dog. Otherwise - great!!

    Pros

Lots of information about the dog you are adopting

    Cons

    None
