  • 1. A neat place to visit even if you have no intention of adopting an animal

    by: jptaylor

This humane sociality is a great place to visit even if you don’t intend to adopt. The facility is amazingly clean, with separate areas for cats, dogs, birds, and small animals. Friendly staff are always around to help answer questions or assist with visiting the animals. There are hand sanitizing stations all around and they ask that you always wash your hands between animals to avoid the spread of germs. The dog area also has a shoe washing station to make sure you don’t track germs in or out. There are plenty of visitation rooms where you can spend time with a pet prior to adoption. All cats and dogs are spayed or neutered prior to being available for adoption. Part of your adoption fee includes a free vet check-up at the clinic of your choice within 2 weeks of adopting an animal.

    Pros

    Clean healthy animals to see

  • 2. I love and donate to AHS Golden Valley

    by: ronaldkemmet

I haven't been in the shelter for years - it just breaks m heart to have to leave without taking ALL the animals but I did get my beautiful, special cat, MAYA, at PetSmart. She was loaned to their tiny adoption center from the AHS facility in Coon Rapids. She had been a ferel cat for around 3 years, got pregnant, sent to shelter, had kitties, all kitties got adopted but not her. When I saw her, I said "You're coming home with ME!" and she did!" Gradually, she warmed up and became more affectionate. I had two cats previously ALFIE and MAXX (they're in a beautiful vase now waiting for Maya and ME) and they were so affectionate and comforting, I was a little disappointed with Maya, but in the last 8 years I have come to love her very much and I just let her be herself. These cat friends are my BEST friends and they have saved my life - more than once.

  • 3. Great Shelter

    by: sharbono

I have been a volunteer at this shelter for 15 years and believe this Humane Society is a positive influence on the community. The animals are well cared for until they find their forever home. They offer a lot of services, take in animals from other shelters and are always thinking about what can be done to educate people on spaying/neutering their animals.

    Pros

    Services,willingness to help other shelters,cleanliness

  • 4. Big Place.

    by: sistertex

I have been to this facility and have adopted from it in the past. As part of a rescue group I also tried to work with them on that level a couple of times and really met resistance due to policies that were in place, IOW they had a greyhound, we were asked to get it, we met a lot of resistance. It never makes sense to me that when another 'rescue' which has a very good reputation steps forward and tries to help by taking an animal off a shelter's hands - so they have room for another, why a shelter would not allow something like that. Many call our group right away, before they have spent time and money on the animal, which I think is really the way to go. But not so with this shelter. None the less - I am not trying to knock the shelter because it is a great place to adopt some, but just trying to give insite on different levels. My take on the place...they do love and care for the animals well, should work more with rescues they trust.

    Pros

    Clean, nice facility,

    Cons

Wasn't able to give much information on Greyhounds - I helped them...gave them material.

  • 5. Great Organization

    by: yoshismom

This organization is well run by staff and board members who are involved for the simple reason of helping animals. Their volunteers are simply the best! Everyone is always friendly and helpful. You can tell that they care very deeply for the animals they are helping.

    Pros

having 5 locations is so convenient

    Cons

    can't think of one

  • 6. A GREAT place to find new pets

    by: ataylor09

Thank you so much Golden Valley Animal Humane Society. Without you, I would not be able have my favorite Guinea Pig, Caramel. I rescued him from you about 2 years ago. I just love him. Thanks again. You have so many great animals there that all need a loving home. I hope you find homes for them soon. Thanks again.

  • 8. Now our friends

    by: peytonplace2001

Thanks to the First Zootoo Contest and my shelter being in the top 20, we went to Florida to the Pet Expo. I am so glad this had happened as we met a wonderful person name Ray from the Animal Humane Society. \n\nRay told me that he loved the idea of our prison program and if we even needed help because our shelter was full to call.\n\nWell I had to call back in August 08. The Animal Humane Society offered to take as many dogs as we could transport. So the Doggie transport guy and friend transported 19 of our dogs. It was a long trip but worth it.\n\nI got to see video and pictures of the shelter. DTG told me that the shelter was very clean, the staff was very friendly and he felt good about leaving the animals in their care.\n\nIt was less than 3 weeks and all our 19 dogs we sent them were adopted.\n\nI love having Friends like the AHS who is willing to help a smaller shelter when they need it.

    Pros

    clean, big, friendly

    Cons

    a long way from Ohio

  • 9. A good place to find a cat or dog

    by: Jagenberg

We adopted our dog Louie from this humane society when he was only 6 weeks old. He was part of an unwanted litter. The puppies originally came from Indiana then went through Illinois, Wisconsin, and finally ending up in Minnesota. He was healthy and well cared for, but of course he was a baby and everyone dotes on the puppies. I actually wanted an older more mature dog since they are harder to place but my kids fell for Louie. He was neutered and micro chipped by the Humane Society veterinarians and our own vet at Woodlake said that this humane society was a fairly decent facility. They also offer obedience training along with other various courses and activities. We placed Louie in the puppy socialization class and found three of his siblings in class with us which was wonderful.\nThe public areas that we could see were clean and well maintained. I believe that rescuing a dog from a shelter is preferable to purchasing from a breeder. Louie is a wonderful dog and I would recommend this humane society to anyone looking for a pet.
