  • 1. a look at Animal Friends

    by: the3walcks

I read the reviews & had to say that animal friends is great. The reason why they can not take every pet in the world is because they are a true NO KILL shelter so what room we have is what we got. They wont and dont kill for space like the other places do. There is no such place that can take all in, ones that dont turn down, kill for the new animals coming in.Most of your shelters do kill for space like the humane society. Animal friends is great and the animals they do get, they spend what ever they have to to get them healthy. They do more then any other shelter I have ever known. I remember watching animal cops and seeing the dogs that they put down and then looking at the dogs they get at animal friends and what they do to make them better.I have seen dogs come in & be at death door and next thing you know a month later the dog is better and rady for adoption. They is no boundry to what they do for those animals. The humane officers bring in horrible horrible stuff and they dont give up on any animal. As far as why they need the money, You need money to help animals. They do not skimp on anything when it comes to helping the abused & hurt animals. Who wouldnt want to have more money to help. They do free spay and neuters for tons of people who can not afford it. They are always there to help. As far as what the staff knows, the place is mostly volunteers, like me, but any where you can have problem. Once again no one is perfect. The place is huge and has alot for the dogs to do such as play yards, trails through the woods, agility chourses and many many classes such as smal dog social, puppy classes, get your dog ready for baby classes and so much more. The place has so much stuff to offer.

    Pros

They truly care about the animals

    Cons

  • 2. Concerning Animal Friends

    by: mrspomlady

Clean facility lots of fun activities for dogs and their owners however they are not very fair in allowing all rescues and dog groups to utilize their facilities. When an event outside of the facility is planned there always seems to be confusion getting tickets and information i.e. Last Splash, Bark in the Park, etc.

    Pros

    Clean facility

    Cons

They never return phone calls and the staff does not seem to be on the same page so to speak.

I recently adopted a dog there, love him. He was owned by a bad past owner, and i had to have him to show him what its really like in the world and to be treated like family. hes a pitbull but is actually the kindest dog i EVER had. never has growled and lets you do watever you want to him.

    Pros

  • 5. Great people with sweet, loving, adoptable pets!

    by: FoxyRoxyRaceBabe

I learned of "Animal Friends" while I was at the Pittsburgh Home & Garden Show representing DAD's petcare. They had sweet animals available for adoption. Of course, I wanted to take them all home! Knowing that the staff/volunteers were as caring and loving to the animals as if they were their own means that the best possible people will be adopting them. I really love the "thinking outside of the cage" flags they had on display. I was happy we had samples that we could donate to Animal Friends. Hope the furry friends enjoyed them. Keep up the good work!

    Pros

Eagerly sweet and happy pets waiting for a new home with great people to care for them until a home is found!

    Cons

    none.

    by: daddybob

    by: HaroldT

I have not yet been to the Camp Horne location, but I was at the Penn Avenue location many times, and I recommend this shelter highly. I adopted several cats from them and they always helped me choose a cat that would fit into my menagerie. The staff goes out of their way for animals and you can feel the love all the time. I'm glad they got a new building, the old one was cramped.

    They really care about animals

    by: auntadaira

We went to the Home Show in Monroeville last month and I met several volunteers from Animal Friends and let me tell you, they were wonderful. They came over to our table and donated to our shelter because they knew how much help we needed. They get it! All shelters are in it for the animals. My philosphy is I don't care whose dog gets adopted, as long as one is going home. They have a wonderful group of people working and volunteering there. Thank you for your support.

    Pros

    Very kind people

  • 16. So glad i went to Animal Friends.

    by: jlo166

When I first pulled into the Driveway of Animal Friends I was really impressed. The grounds and the building are really well maintained. As soon as I walked through the door I saw a beautiful golden retriever going out for a walk. As soon as I saw him I wanted to take him home. When he got back from his walk I met him and it was love at first sight! My boyfriend and I signed all the paperwork and were able to take our new family member home right away. I had such a great experience there that I took my sister there and thats where she adopted her first dog!

    Pros

I found my wonderful dog there

    Cons

I can't say anything bad about Animal Friends.

  • 17. Friend to animals

  • 18. gorgeous shelter

    by: thetempest20

This shelter has just had a new building built. Its absolutely gorgeous. It seems like the pets there are well taken care of and the volunteers really care. They also have cool dog meet-ups and other activities. The only negative is that they have a log waitlist and can't accept every dog.

    Pros

    clean, no-kill shelter

    Cons

    limited space

  • 19. Helps the Greater Pittsburgh Area

    by: CarolMajernik

I have been wanting to visit this place. I understand that they were given the land and lots of money to build this place by a rich animal loving lady. Their website shows that they conduct lots of programs about pets for the public. Seem like a hard working group.

    Pros

    A large no-kill shelter.

    Cons

    none

  • 20. lots of advertising

    by: tfronczek

I have not been to this shelter but I constantly hear them on the radio and various places talking about their shelter and adopting shelter animals. They do alot of advertising and that helps all shelters.

  • 21. Nice Facility Good Programs

    by: bgordon

We first went to Animal Friends with our puppy Abby for Puppy Kindergarten and were very impressed with the facilities. I admire this no-kill shelter and think they are very organized. I just wish it wasn't located in the North Hills.

    Pros

No-kill shelter, puppy classes are good starter classes, patient staff

    Cons

Only in North Hills - Store is expensive

  • 22. Fabulous organization and facility

    by: fastcars

A friend who volunteers at the facility invited a group of us to visit their shelter. It was large, new, and organized well. I really liked the cat colony rooms. It had several rooms of varying sizes for different evernts. It was in a beautiful setting with walking trail in a wooded area. They are quite successful in placing animals.

    Pros

    New facility

    Cons

    None

  • 23. Beautiful facility

    by: jeansexauer

I had a tour of the facility with the manager at the time of WAHS; they were extremely nice to us and explained all of the great things they incorporated into the facility. They are very lucky and I hope we can have half the things they have if we win the contest.

    Pros

The facility is state of the art

    Cons

    not sure

  • 24. beautiful setting, caring staff, great place

    by: AnneM

Beautiful setting where the dogs and cats get first rate care until they are adopted. Of course, volunteers are always needed to walk the dogs and spend time with them.

    Pros

Very caring knowledgeable staff, beautiful place for the animals

    Cons

none, except it is a little far away from where I live

  • 25. Wonderful rescue organization

  • 26. Selective Intake of Animals

    by: corky1999

I think this is a great PR machine. They do wonderful fund raisers and make the facility available to the community. It's clean and the animals well cared for. They have endowments and I see no reason for them to be supported by ZooToo. But what really bugs me is that they tout they are no kill -- and they are. BUT they carefully screen and select the dogs they take to be fairly certain that the ones they take in can go out to a good home. In other words, they screen so that they can minimize having unplacable dogs. This from first had experience.

    Pros

Good job with fund raising and animal care

    Cons

Only take in dogs they can place

  • 27. "no kill"

    by: ILovePitties

I want every animal shelter to make it. But unfortunately because they are claimed "no kill" everyone dumps their money to them, instead of the shelters that really need it!

    Pros

    no kill

    Cons

    get all the money

  • 28. Thank You

  • 35. Nice facilities

    by: Winiferd

I went here early last year when I was looking for a cat. Each I asked to see a certain cat, the employee told me all the negative things about the cat before mentioning anything nice about the cat. I realize they do this so that one can see what they are getting into, but I was not crazy about the place. When they finally did agree to let me see a cat, it took them over 20 minutes to get the cat. They never even gave me a chance to fall in love with a pet, needless to say, I went somewhere else and adopted a cat. Unfortunately I recommend the other place over this place. But I will say, their new facilities are very nice.

    Pros

    Nice facilities

    Cons

    cusotmer service is lacking

  • 36. The nicest shelter around

    by: sherman

Animal Friends is amazing. The shelter is out of this world. My wife calls it a "resort" rather than a shelter. My only problem is that they turn down a lot of animals and the waiting list can be really long.

    Pros

    multi-million dollar shelter

    Cons

they don't take in every animal

  • 37. The best of best.

  • 38. Shelter,vet services etc

    by: nurse4u92

I only have a little bit of familiarity with this shelter. I know that they also offer low cost vaccinations, ( as does the shelter I am supporting), and the also try to help low income people to try and spay and neuter their pets. My mother was looking for options, and she recived brochures, and info on financial assistance. They also try to get their animals adopted. I don't know how much the prices vary for services, including adoption, microchipping, etc vs. WPAHS

    Pros

    shelter,vet services, etc.

    Cons

    none.

  • 39. Glad they finally got a new facility

    by: macque

Our family has adopted 2 cats and a dog from Animal Friends. This was before they built the new state-of-the-art facility. I admire their no-kill philosophy. I love my dog, but he has some substantial socialization issues with both humans and other dogs. I don't fault Animal Friends for that by any stretch of the imagination. After all, that might be the reason he found himself in a shelter at the ripe old age of "about one" in the first place. I hold his breeder and original owner responsible. The folks at Animal Friends were kind and compassionate enough to give him a second chance in life. \r\n\r\nI understand that any time you adopt an animal, there are no guarantees about how things will work out. However, when I called Animal Friends to discuss some serious concerns I had, the person I spoke with was not the least bit supportive or helpful. The basic message was, "He's your dog, now. Deal with it."

    Pros

    No kill philosopy

    Cons

    Not very supportive after adoption

  • 40. Great Place. Animal Friends

    by: maklein55

This new facility is absolutely fabulous so I don't really think it needs to win. It is the state of the art facility.

    Pros

Great Staff! Great community dog functions/classes.

    Cons

    Can't think of any.

  • 41. already a beautiful shelter

    by: karen524peterson

This is the premiere animal shelter. It is set in beautiful wooded lot where the animals can have some freedom. Congratulations on the out of this world facility. I wish all animals had the accomodations that you provide.

    Pros

a wonderful place for the animals

    Cons

do you really need more money?

  • 42. Not to be rude. . .

    by: LaurenS

Hi Guys,\r\nI love Animal Friends, don't get me wrong, but why are you entering a contest for a $1 million makeover when you have a brand new multi-million dollar facility?????????? Many shelters struggle just to pay their bills, but Animal Friends recieves tons of funding from the public. Is it really fair to be in this contest against really underfunded shelters???

    Pros

    great organization

    Cons

    already have a new shelter

  • 43. Nice Place

    by: RichStoops

We have adopted from Animal Friends twice, a cat in 2002 and a beagle in 2005. \r\nThis is a nice-looking shelter, staff and volunteers seem great and new grounds rock - I wish the WPHS could acquire a little land to provide our dogs with off leash play space like this. As a trade off, their new location is a bit of a haul from the City and you have to fight traffic on 279 to get to it. I also wish that they weren't so restrictive on the animals that they will accept, a lot of animals in need of somewhere to go are turned away from here, which is so unfortunate because it is a great place to be if you're a homeless dog or cat.\r\n

    Pros

Nice building, lots of land for the animals to get outside and exercise, woods trail

    Cons

Location, they will not take just any animal in need, limit the number of pit bulls they will accept :-(
