    by: filedris

I have volunteered with this shelter for several years and think all the staff are very knowledgable and dedicated. I have adopted 2 kittens from ACL and proud they are both thriving as they become beautiful cats. We strive to improve at any opportunity to secure good loving homes for the animals we work with.

  • 4. Off-site adoption events rock

    by: Bellacat3

I enjoy seeing the Animal Care League's volunteers at their weekly off-site adoption events. They are well organized and really draw a crowd with their animals. Other shelters can really learn from their success at setting up adoption events in places where people work and play!

    Pros

spay/neuter clinic, high adoption rate for dogs, lots of volunteers

    Cons

need to do more for cats, need a better location

  • 5. NOT a No Kill by any means

    by: notsofast

The Animal Care League is NOT a No Kill!!! They do kill and it is a fact. That is great they take them all in but it doesn't mean they stay alive. Check your facts. They are not what they seem to be. Yes, they do a lot of good work but they do kill a good percentage of their animals. Don't take my word for it call and ask them! It is about profit and greed and not ultimately about saving a life!

    Pros

    Take in animals

    Cons

    They kill some of them

  • 8. Thank you!

    by: TamikoS

We recently moved to Oak Park. Our door blew open on a windy Sunday and our two dogs took a walk. (We were out all morning.) Our neighbor saw one of them in the alley and put her back inside. Our other dog befriended a neighbor we did not know. After awhile, with no one looking for him and no current tags, they called the police and he was impounded. I've never had a pet "locked up" before. I was expecting harsh judgment and at least some finger-wagging from the staff when I picked him up on Monday. Instead, they were kind and understanding. I do have their tags and info updated now.

  • 10. Good shelter

    by: blp715

We've adopted all of our cats from the Animal Care League over the past 25 years. The staff are committed, the shelter is clean, the animals receive excellent veterinary services (physical exam, shots/vaccinations, neutered, microchippped), and care of the special needs animals (older, health problems, abused, behavior problems, etc) is individualized. Once an animal is brought in to the shelter, it stays until it is adopted no matter how long that takes. The adoption process is designed to help the animals find a clean, safe, loving home and to help the people find an animal that is a good match for everyone - people and other animals - in the home. There is currently a lower adoption cost for older animals. Animal Care League does a lot of educational outreach to the community and the schools about how to be good, responsible pet owners and pet lovers. There is an active group of volunteers who help out at the shelter.

    Pros

Try to make sure animals and adopters are good match

    Cons

    Not open on Sunday

  • 12. Not as awesum as you think

    by: Scottyboy12

They are a very political organization. They adopted a cat out that was at least 3 years old and were telling people that the car was only one year old !! Not very upright or upstanding if you ask me !!

    Pros

They do help animals get adopted

    Cons

    They do put animals down

  • 13. Top notch shelter

    by: incensepot

Adopting out nearly 800 animals last year, and on pace this year, I can witness to an organized and professionally operated animal shelter that puts animals first, and finds great homes to enhance the adopters' home life. Excellent director who runs a well-organized Care League. Highly recommended. I volunteer walking dogs. Great staff!!!

    Pros

Safety and health of the animals is first

    by: SandyReedy

several of my foster kittens have been taken in by this large rescue group, for which we are very grateful. We are a small group in a sparsely populated county where animal welfare is an afterthought, and any help we can get from these large urban shelters is very much appreciated!

    Pros

very willing to help when they can

This is a top of the line shelter. The facility is kept clean, and is a model facility. They assist rural shelters in helping to adopt animals that would have been euthanized due to lack of adopters.

    Excellant Care

  • 22. Review of Animal Care League

    by: animalkid

The Animal Care League is a no-kill shelter that houses dogs and cats. The animals are very well cared for. The cats have a nice cat room to run, nap, and play in, and the dogs are walked regularly by staff or volunteers. The shelter offers low-cost vet care and dog-training programs. All animals that come from the shelter are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. The staff that work at the shelter are friendly and helpful. \r\nThe Animal Care League is an AWESOME shelter!!!!!!

    Pros

The staff are helpful and the animals are in a clean, comfortable environment

    Cons

    I can't think of anything

  • 24. The Best Shelter

    by: ztT4MP34607819

My daughter and I started volunteering at Animal Care League in Oak Park about two years ago. I was immediately impressed with the training process. This involved learning about the shelter's policies, then learning specifics about working with the dogs or cats;each required a separate training session. They stressed safety-with the dogs using a double leash until the child was sixteen. We could go in the cat room together and visit the cats. It was a fun way to spend time with my animal loving child. They have three different levels you can train for: Green level means the dogs can be easily be walked and handled. To walk a yellow level dog you need to be over 15 and go to another training class to prepare to work with these dogs that are more difficult. Red level dogs are to be walked by staff only or certain very experienced and trained volunteers. They have a volunteer coordinator, who seeks to encourage the volunteers, therefore the animals in this shelter get out more and have more attention.\n We can take the dogs out around the neighborhood, or in the play yard across the street, There is also an indoor playroom. The cats are in their own area. There are two free-roam kitten rooms. In the adult cat area, some well behaved cats are free-roam. They have quite a lot of things for them to climb on. \n The facility is always very clean and well-staffed. As an added bonus, their web sight is informative. The staff works hard to place the animals for adoption. In spite of shelter life, the animals are well cared for. The shelter is the best in training and an easy place to volunteer for families.

    Pros

    Well-Planned Training Sessions for Volunteers

    Cons

None that I can think of
