    by: DakotasMama

I found Angel Acres through, Jill Curtis, owner of the Shiloh Horse Rescue who I support. I've gotten to know of these two great women, champions for horses, throught their respective websites and emails! I am so happy that a horse rescue is in the running for the 1 million dollar grand prize. It costs a great amount to support, feed, care, pay vet and farrier's bills for these horses who are often brought at killer auctions, not to mention the purchase price. Some of these horses have suffered greatly at human hands yet they are offered a second chance through these rescues. When we get our property, we are in AZ, I will be traveling to Las Vegas to purchase a rescued horse from Shiloh, only because they are much closer than Jo in PA...sorry Miss Jo. A horse rescue always needs something, fencing, sheds, mare hotels, feed, hay, meds, blankets, halters, lounge ropes, etc, and the money to pay for these items plus the vet & farrier bills. I hope you win Angel Acres and please keep up the great work...great website you have! Mary A from AZ.

  • 8. What rescue really means

    by: pfreeman

Jo doesn't know me, but I sent her an email last year when we were in the process of rescuing a starving and neglected Thoroughbred mare. She had been left by herself without food or shelter in a muddy pen for several months before we were alerted to her condition by a concerned neighbor. We walked her to safety because she was too weak to load on a trailer. In the past year she has found a loving home, gained over 400 pounds, regained her lustrous chesnut coat, and begun Parelli training. Having her has enriched our lives beyond measure. During this process I contacted Jo based on what I had seen on her website. She was so helpful and encouraging, and gave us great advice. We are based in Tennessee, but are great fans of Angel Acres via the internet. We believe many more equine lives can be saved, and more human lives can be enriched if Angel Acres wins the ZooToo makeover contest.

  • 10. Does great work!

    by: bevcampbell

Angel Acres came to my attention while we still were living in Downingtown, PA. They really care about the horses. Just looking at the enthusiasm generated for this contest you know Jo and team are dedicated to their cause. Withthe economy sadly leaving people to abandon their horses because of the expense, their services are needed more than ever. They need the prize money to grow.

    Pros

    Fabulous focus

    Cons

    None!!

  • 11. A Long Distance Love Affair

    by: RagamuffinNC

I cannot remember how Angel Acres first came to my attention. I think a random email landed in my inbox describing a simple need for an abused horse. Just a few dollars changed this magnificent animals' life. I have been hooked. It is easy to watch tear-jerking ads on TV about dogs and cats (I have three shelties who are like my kids) and immediately sense the very real needs for the lap cuddlers. However, horses are just as loyal and affectionate as any smaller animal companion and deserve any and everything we can possibly do to keep them from abuse, neglect and untimely death. In the present economic crisis coupled with the rising cost of feeding large animals and farmland depletion, the plight of horses are possibly growing more dire by the day. Angel Acres deserves to be ready to love, rehabilitate and provide adoptive connections for these ancient allies of humanity.

    Pros

    Passion, Integrity and Knowledgable

    Cons

Large animals with large needs - and growing!

  • 12. Giving former race horses a second chance

    by: RemarkablySpecial

We adopted our daughter TB mare from Angel Acres in the Fall of 2006. Today they compete in the Pre-Childrens Hunter & Equitation divisions. Last year with a very limited showing of about a dozen shows they won Reserve Champion for the Beginner Hunter Division in the NJPHA (New Jersey Professional Horseman's Association) end of year high points awards. God Bless Jo & Patty for all the work they do.

    Pros

Horses are evaluated before being offered for adoption

    Cons

    None

I met Jo Diebel and staff at the Expo 3 yrs. ago when I was similarly involved in a horse rescue. I was impressed with her organization, staff and realism with the situations and realities which involved aspects of this ever increasing problem. Since getting to know her, her husband, staff and volunteers, I feel she has accomplished amazing things. Her energy, dedication and zeal are truly AWESOME!

    Pros

    Knowledgeable, compassionate, realistic

    Cons

  • 16. Doing everything right!

    by: juliewho

We have not visited this facility, but have spent the past year being on their email list. What has impressed us so greatly is the commitment they have to not just rescuing, but rehabilitating, and placing horses. Horses are well known by the staff and adopting families scrutinized carefully to make sure that the horse receives the BEST outcome possible. Some rescues have their hearts in the right place, but end up doing the horses a disservice because their inability to look at the whole picture of horse rescue! Angel Acres is doing it right!

    Pros

    Fastidious about placements

    Cons

    None

  • 19. Extremely well run operation.

    by: PROPMASTER4

Kind, compassionate and caring the volunteers running this place are tireless and Jo is relentless in here mission to save horses bound for slaughter. We have seen her leave at 5am for a horse in need; on only a moments notice. We have seen her limitless compassion as she laid in the field with Mattie throughout the night in the freezing rain because everyone thought he wouldn't pull through and she refused let him die alone. I think it was her shear will (and a lot of hoof care lol) that helped pulled Mattie through. If I were a horse in danger I truly would want to be rescued by Jo & Patty and Angel Acres - the equipment needs a makeover but the volunteers are the best people you will ever meet!

    Pros

good people, good horses, good facility

    Cons

    needs updated equipment

  • 22. Angel Acres Rocks!

    by: DeannaKomber

Patty and Jo who run the rescue are the most caring and compassionate people when it comes to saving the lives of these horses. They work day and night to meet the animals needs and are there for the people who would like to adopt. They would love to expand their operation to help even more horses. Many people have acknowledged their job well done through donations and I would love to see them win a makeover. That would enable them to expand and continue to do a great service to these animals.

We adopted our 3rd horse Raneem early last year. He is smart, sane, and very easy to work around. Nothing fazes him and even our 3 year old daughter can sit on him. Although he's not rideable he's providing a good pasture mate for my older horse and we are glad that Angel Acres took the time to save him. Keep up the good work!

    by: MAINE5752

The staff of Angel Acres know what it is to care about animals - and in particular the four legged, hoofed variety - our best friend outside the house - the horse. They specialize in horses that have been passed over due to many factors - mostly because they can no longer 'make money' for their owners. Some are just in need of some tender loving care - some just need to be treated with respect and structure - and Jo makes sure that when one of her charges is ready to go to their forever home - that it IS forever. Jo is not a collector of animals - rather would love to have each of her charges move into homes so that she can continue her good work to give as many as she can the kind of loving care we all would like to see these magnificent creatures receive. If you are in the area - and can give an animal a forever home - or maybe just sponsor a horse which will help Jo continue to do more for these wonderful horses - please check out Angel Acres and all the good things they have done - and will continue to do - with our help.

    Pros

    Know what they are doing

    Cons

    by: Rwolfe88

I volunteer with Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue and have worked around horses and other horse farms in the MD and PA area, this place is great!\r\n\r\nHorses are well taken care of, provided with outstanding veteraniary and farrier care. Hay quality is excellent (I know I have stacked tons of it) and the place is well organised and runs like a well oil machine, except with tons of human volunteers.\r\n\r\nJo and Patty work tirelessly for the horses, they have a great new volunteer in Fran Burns. And Chuck, well no hoof no horse, is an amazing farrier and deserves an award for his work on the Angel Acres horses! Dr. Wells is just great and takes care of everyone on the property. Kelly comes to ride and professionally evaluates the horses before they are available for adoption.\r\n\r\nMe, I just volunteer and help whenever they need me.\r\n\r\nI would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Angel Acres!

    Pros

    Great Volunteers, Great Facility!

    Cons

  • 43. Angel Acres is the BEST

    by: LisaMillerB

I first contacted Angel Acres the day after Christmas, when I looked at the calendar and realized my littlest child would go to Kindergarten in nine months, and realized I had to find another child. Since my husband has declared no more people children, I knew it had to be a horse. I had a horse in my pre-child life and rode for ten years or so, and it was wonderful to think about re-connecting with that part of me. Jo called me back right away, and the more contact I had with her, the more amazed I was with her, and the more horrified I was about the horse racing industry. I did a lot of research, and the more I found out about them and the more I read on their website, I was sure they were an A-list agency. They were wonderful, even before I had picked someone.. They treated me as if I was the only person in the world wanting a horse, as sure as I think they treat each horse as if they are the only needy horse in the world. We picked out a sweetie, only to get him home and find he had a hidden progressive ( huge) medical problem , causing big lameness. Angel Acres was mortified, and gave me a lot of options, support, and more TLC than my own trainer. In the words of Jo, "we want you to have somebody you can ride and enjoy..." Most agencies, and hardly any horse sellers, for that matter, would never stand behind a buyer like that. But they did. So, they picked up the Sweetie, and picked out another Sweetie (#2) that fits out home, as, by now, Jo knows me really well ! Throughout everything, they have been great, and only have the best interests of the horse, and new family in mind. They are, hands down, the BEST.

  • 46. Great Rescue, Great Volunteers, The BEST!

    by: musclecarman

My Mom runs Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue. When she first started it, I thought it would fail. \r\n\r\nI should have known better! My Mom is the hardest working person I know. PERIOD. She lives, eats and breathes horses. Her family comes first, but the horses are only seconds behind!\r\n\r\nShe sleeps in the barn when horses are sick, injured or if they have just come into the rescue. She feeds them, waters them several times a day (and look out if a water buck or tub is dirty) every day, grooms them as much as possible, and basically cares for them until they are adopted out.\r\n\r\nI help at night and do the midnight check, yep 12:10am to 1:00am I am out there making sure fences arent knocked down, the horses are ok and everyone has enough water and hay till the morning. I chose this shift as I am almost 21 and my mom doesnt need to be out walking the property and stuff with all the work she has to do. \r\n\r\nIf I could get one thing for my mom, it would be this makeover. She started on (as she likes to say) a shoe string and is now approaching her 5th anniversary. She works with other rescues around the country and large animal welfare groups to help horses. \r\n\r\nAlso, she is finishing her degree, takes care of all of us and talks to reporters, adopters, and people needing help with their horses.\r\n\r\nI would recommend this place to everyone! \r\n

This rescue is great because they keep horses out of the killer pens. Horses that would have a very good chance at second careers. by: molloye05

Angel Acres is one of the best rescues I've seen. I am currently fostering a horse for them, and she is living proof that they are doing great things for great horses. This poor little mare needed a new lease on life because she just wasn't cutting it as a race horse... Angel Acres gave her that chance. Now she's learning how to relax and just enjoy life. This sweet, smart little mare will make someone a great horse someday and this rescue has given her the push she needs to be able to do that. Overall, it's a much needed rescue full of great people doing wonderful things for horses in need.

Angel Acres is a Horse Rescue in Pennsylvania, The horsea that come through there has been beaten, starved, neglected and forgotten. \r\n\r\nAfter coming to Angel Acres everyone is treated for physically injuries and emotional as well. Its amazing how friendly and lovelable these horses are after going through the program at Angel Acres. After all they have been through before coming there and for Angel Acres to find the love every horse has to offer again is a beatiful thing.\r\n\r\nThey take the time to find every horse a suitable home, and they stay in an Angle Acres approved farm until an adoptive family is found. They dont get "lost" and they are never given up on ( for a second time).\r\n\r\nEvery person who donates there time/money and resorces does it because they love what they do, and they believe in what Angel Acres stands for. The hard work and dedication given by all of these people is to be commended and The horses truly do thank them for it !!
