On October 22, the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals and Petfinder.com partnered up to sponsor the second Brooklyn Bridge Pup Crawl, in which 500 dogs marched across the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City to raise money and awareness for local animal shelters and rescues.
The first pup crawl, held in 2009, raised thousands of dollars for animal shelters in New York, Florida, and California. It was the first nighttime pet parade, conceived in response to the number of animals that were going to lose their homes due to the foreclosure crisis.
"Since then, Pup Crawls have taken place on bridges in California, Arizona and Pennsylvania, collectively raising tens of thousands of dollars for local animal rescue organizations," said Mayor’s Alliance President Jane Hoffman.
The 500 pups and their owners all met up at 5:30 p.m. in front of City Hall Park for some doggy mingling before the crawl. Just after sunset, all of the participants made the trek over the Brooklyn Bridge together. During the walk, the pups and their owners were kept safe by using The Pup Crawl Lights-Up Leash, an illuminated dog leash that is visible from a quarter mile away.
Proceeds from leash sales are currently benefiting 390 different shelters and rescues, with $3 from each sale going to a participating organization. Any non-profit shelter or rescue in the United States can sign up to be a part of the program.
